Who Is Funding Distribution Of DVDs About Radical Islam In Campaign Home Stretch?

This got a bit of attention earlier this week, and we're surprised it hasn't attracted the notice of the bigger news orgs, because it's a pretty interesting mystery: Who, exactly, is funding the distribution of lurid DVDs across America warning of the global radical Islamic threat, in the home stretch of the election?

The DVD, which would seem to be helpful to John McCain, is called Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against The West, and it was distributed in small newspapers across the country last weekend, prompting little news outlets to start digging. Here's the insert:

The DVD was originally released by neocon filmmaker Raphael Shore in 2006, and it has popped up at various times since. Fox News aired it during the 2006 midterms, for example. Right-wing pastor John Hagee's group, Christians United for Israel, helped pay for a mass mailing of it around six months ago.

Now it's back, and local news outlets are slowly putting together a picture of the current campaign.

The group funding the current distribution of it is a shadowy nonprofit in New York called the Clarion Fund, which was founded by filmmaker Shore. The Harrisburg Patriot-News of Pennsylvania spoke to Clarion spokesperson Gregory Ross, and was told that some 28 million of these DVDs would be distributed nationwide through direct mail and in newspapers up into September. Meanwhile, a Florida TV station reported mid-week that the DVDs had already started showing up in mailboxes in the southwest part of this crucial swing state.

So how much money is behind this campaign to ship 28 million DVDs out with two months to go until the election? Ross has only been willing to say that his group is spending "millions."

Where's the cash coming from? We initially suspected that Hagee's group, Christians United For Israel, might be helping to bankroll the latest distribution, since they helped fund one six months ago. But CUFI spokesman Juda Engalmyer told Election Central today that they had zero involvement in this current campaign.

Clarion, for its part, has refused to reveal its funding. Clarion is a 501(c)3, so it's not obliged to reveal its donors. And it's so new that it hasn't filed any IRS-mandated 990 forms yet.

Seems worth digging into further.

I dunno. But my guess is it's a joint effort between DemBillc and Matthew Weaver.

... in that they both have an obsessive mancrush on Obama that neither are willing to confront. :(

I don't know, is Obsession just a series of cut and pastes from other resources?

user-pic

That's how we viewed it. Cut and paste bigotry. Or made to be that way. Shows little kids in madrasas, for example, next to views of huge crowds saluting Hitler.

Here is a clip from the DVD.

Its actually quite alarming.

This is exactly why we must have victory in Iraq. America must be protected.

More troops! For the love of God, send in more troops!

Troops? In the name of God, release the nuclear weapons before its too late!

Need I remind you that Obama wishes to enlarge the military? And attempt a military solution 'in' the Pakistan border regions if the Pakistanis won't help?

Watching that made me a republican.

LOL

Welcome. We've been expecting you. Now go sit on the Group W Bench.

Do I get a tire pressure gauge?

Why, yes you do. And we have these boxes of band-aides with little purple hearts on them which we still need to get rid of so you can have some of these. And, oh yeah, here is our special GOP-edition of the Bible. Make sure you read it from cover to cover.

Those band-aids will come in handy, seeing as how I got a lobotomy this afternoon.

user-pic

NOW you're ready to be vice president.

user-pic

But there are mother-rapers and father-rapers and... LITERERS on the group W bench.

Welcome to a normal day here at the Republican Application Office. Now move along, kid.

Ahhhhh. Supreme snark brought to you by TPM.

You can get anything want...

For me...I don't want a pickle. I just want to ride on my motorcylce.

Just wanna ride my motorcy-cle

If it's McHale's Swiftboat Navy, the Obamans need to stick it to them, toot sweet, saying "See how they put country first?"

Richard Silverstein has published some insights on his blog.

I got one of these in the mail on Monday or Tuesday of this week. I tossed it in the trash w/o checking into it. I figured it was the usual right-wing bedwetting BS, which I'm sure is correct. Anyway, I live in Hollywood, Fl, which is between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale on the east coast, and a very blue area. Lots of retired jews in the area and in my building, which I figure is the target of this crap.

They were handing these out outside Mile High Stadium after Obama's acceptance speech.

My guess is that anyone who would respond to this stuff is already solidly in McCain's camp. Just a waste of money. Hollywood and tv do more to pump the threat than this CD could.

off topic...

Whilst eating my dinner I thought of a joke Obama should save to take over a news cycle from McCain he might be dominating near the end.

What do John McCain and Sarah Palin have in common? They've both been charged for ethics violations.

A joke about a couple of (scary) jokes

Most experts say that this looks like the work of The JPF.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nl3t6EcbvQ

I can confirm that this was an insert in last Sunday's Akron (OH) Beacon Journal.

At least in Medina County (ex-urban area of Cleveland and Akron). Whether it was a targeted insert or citywide, I'm really not sure.

Off topic:
Since it has been mentioned on TPM that I've seen, but Hillary Clinton has a new campaign called "Hillary Sent Me," where she is asking her supporters to go to NH to support Obama while she travels to Michagan.

I've had my issues with her during the primary, but I think she has come on board and has put the Democratic Party ahead of her ambitions (can't say the same for Bill yet).

user-pic

Y'know... have Bill Clinton and Dembillc ever been seen in public together????

Hmmm. Not that I know of. Okay, ewwww, just had an image of Bill Clinton in undershorts, pounding back some shots, working the message boards on his laptop in some hotel room under the username DemBillC.

user-pic

I have it on good authority that Dembillc's undershorts have pictures of little fogu2s on them.

Double ewwwwwwww.

user-pic

Actually, I think that qualifies as quadruple ewwww.

I think you're right on that. Especially if one images this Obession video playing on tv on a loop in background as Dembillc types his vile in his fpgu2 underwear.

Go raise hell and tell them "Hillary sent me"

user-pic

Now go do that voodoo that you do so well...

user-pic

I got mine the first sunday they were delivered. I complained to the NYTimes that Sunday evening - that I believe they had snuck bigotry into my home! I also wrote and phoned the public editor of the Times. And phoned the subscription people.

In addition, the very next morning we went to the largest Mosque in our city, where we expressed our deep distress about this and provided them with the scanned front and back of the literature that came with it, together with a scan of the CD.

Thank you for finally following up on this - as I coped Josh to my letter to the Times two weeks ago! (in hopes they would see how much importance I attached to this... as well as in hopes you folks would follow up)

In my view this DVD is BIGOTRY of the worst sort! My husband called it the "most hateful film I have ever seen." (this from a man who was born during the Spanish civil war and lived under Franco for many years)

Here's a link to my blog from the Sunday night after viewing the film:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/scurrilous-antiislam-dvd-arriv.php

It equates Muslims with Nazis and Hilter.

And to sneak it into my home in the newspaper...well, that was the lowest possible blow!

Thank you for your follow up to the newspaper and your visit to the Mosque.

user-pic

Amen, buddy!

user-pic

got a sneaking feeling fear isn't gonna sell so much this year.

All Fear will be 50% off it listed price. Can I offer you some Leadership, we just got this in from Illinois.

user-pic

hm, i don't know if it'll fit me. i'm kinda hunched over these last few years.

It might feel a little uncomfortable at first, but after a few days I'm sure you'll feel a sense of grassroot empowerment. And it'll look great on the barricades.

user-pic

When I went to the city office with my mailing (with the 4 "bad men" on the back), I said to the city clerk, they want me to "be afraid, be very afraid." Then I looked her dead in the eye, and asked: "Do I look afraid?" (I might have looked scary, mad as heck, but I sure did not look afraid.)

Nope, I don't think fear's gonna sell this year.

I think we are all "Fired up!" And every chance we get, we stand right up and yell bloody murder!

Philadelphia Inquirer also. Not just small papers and the Times. I didn't bother to watch it or complain about it, but I noticed it last Sunday.

user-pic

It was clear to me from the start. This was going to battleground states only!

Haven't seen this in Indiana yet. Maybe they have turned their evil eye off of us.

user-pic

Just wait.

Makes me sick! I got that on a Sunday. And then on a Monday the mcShame mailing that sent me to my city to check on my registration. And that mailing came with photos of 4 "bad guys."

ooooooh. I was scared! NOT! But very annoyed!

What exactly was this mailing? Who were these bad guy?

user-pic

The mailing was addressed to me, but using a form of my name (an extra initial) I don't use - and am not registered under. It was two forms for absentee ballots inside. But on the reverse of the address - photos of 4 "bad guys" (Chavez, Osama, Kim Jong Il, and the president of Iran... not gonna try to spell his name). When I went to City Hall I found out that many people had received a mailing telling them to send the request for absentee ballot to the WRONG city!! Our city clerk was annoyed because this costs the city postage, telling someone they sent the form to the wrong place. Or if I had applied under the name as they addressed it to me, I would not have shown up as registered! That was my concern, as I have a hispanic last name - and was concerned I'd been targeted for that reason.

Hope this helps.

These people will obviously do ANYTHING! to win. Already people are very angry about these mailings. (And I got mine the day after I got the DVD full of bigotry.)

It's practically going to be hand to hand combat between now and election day in many states.

I want a yard sign that I can hang from the back wheel of my bicycle! I'll stop working and just cycle everywhere if it comes to that!

Thanks. It's important to hear the details of what these evil (yes, I'll use that word, because right now I'm really p.o.'d) people will do. This is the most unpatriotic thing someone can do in my opinion, undermine the very foundation of democracy. How these people can look themselves in the mirror is beyond me. It really is. And all the power to you as you fight the good fight.

Not to be too hokey (or fanatical), but it is as a pyschologist reasearcher and dean who had stopped all animal researh in his department told me awhile ago when I called him for advice on taking on animal research on my campus: "Rememner, you are on the side of the angels."

user-pic

Exactly! That's why I spoke to a lawyer at the DA's office about it. As well as the city clerk.

And my biggest concern was that people might get scared about voting at all.

At this point I am perfectly prepared in case they try to contest my registration at the poll on election day. I doubt anything will happen to me, but if it does, I will raise holy hell!!!

Yes, these folks are EVIL1 And I will fight tooth and nail - for my vote and yours. Or anyone's.

This is a terrible and shameful moment in our country's history.

If we all can somehow find this spirit Obama will win this election. But this is bigger than Obama, or the Dems winning a majority in the Congress. This is about our democracy. From the "caging" letters in Florida, to the mortgage default lists in Michigan, to where I live where the lone Repub denied early voting on the college campus (with no cost to the taxpayer) thus creating longer lines, there is a concerted effort to suppres the vote.

The Republicans have shown that this not Rove and Bush. It is the Republicans who hate democracy.

user-pic

If it shows up in my Sunday NY Times delivery I'll cancel the fucking paper altogether. That'll learn the money-grubbing bastards.

user-pic

I made it very clear to them, that if this ever happens again, I am canceling my subscription.

The Public Editor's office, by the way, reported to me that they were "deluged" with complaints after that first ad drop.

Still waiting for their reply on this.

In my view, this is not the kind of thing you want sitting around that children might get hold of! Not the kind of thing to sneak into someone's home. And imagine the Muslims who received this! It's Ramadan right now!

Puts into perspective what is REALLY at stake in this election.

user-pic

I told the public editor's office that I thought this was a very clever attack. Because it not only would make people mad at republicans but also at their newspapers!

Think on that one a bit!

Kind of like Palin. Fires up the base, but ends up firing up the other side's base even more.

user-pic
I told the public editor's office that I thought this was a very clever attack. Because it not only would make people mad at republicans but also at their newspapers!

I think I'm using a different definition of "clever" then. ;)

user-pic

cynical?

Thank you, TheraP.

It's terrific to see someone take a strong stand and remembering that it's Ramadan.

user-pic

Just doing my part, kind sir.

"Money grubbing" is an unusual term. Every media outlet, every business, is in it to make money. Why do you call the New York Times "money grubbing?" Have you ever used that term to describe another media outlet or business? Or is it a special code word reserved for the New York Times?

Very interesting.

Not a small paper, we received a copy in The Grand Rapids Press on Sunday.

I'll be sharing this post with everyone I know.

And looking up Dr. Strangelove on you tube, saw this one: John McCain is Dr. Strangelove (probably a lot of you have seen it already)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nqtL-P8kzo&feature=related

Kind of pertinent to this thread.

user-pic

On the very afternoon of mcShame's acceptance speech, our chimney sprang a leak. It turned out to be a golden opportunity. Why? We have a gigantic chimney. This afternoon, the guys arrived with a huge blue tarp - to cover the chimney till they can do all the repairs. While they started on the tarp, I went right over to Home Depot for some top of the line white spray paint.

Blue tarp - front and back of chimney - OBAMA! in big white letters!

Right on!

user-pic

Here's a story that tops my own:

http://mudflats.wordpress.com/2008/09/19/palin-lies-one-mans-protest-on-the-juneau-cruise-ship-docks/

About a guy in Alaska who's got a sign, PALIN LIES.

And how he's out at the docks greeting cruise ship passengers with his sign... so they'll know that not all Alaskans approve of their gov.

Take the time to read the story. It's a keeper. Spread it around! And check out more excellent reporting on Alaska from AKMuckraker at mudflats.

I already slammed the NYT for allowing this to be distributed in their papers. Just because someone offers them money to distribute something doesn't mean that they should.
I am sick of the media playing passive, innocent, victim while actively doing things that are 'political'.
As consumers we have to push back. The NYT printed an article trying to defend the distribution. What that shows is they were at least feeling some defensiveness.
Seriously we have to participate in our relationship with the media. We are consumers. We have power. If this group has to mail them all directly to the mailbox at least it will cost them more to do it and maybe have less credibility arriving on its own and maybe they will just get tossed.
I hope someone digs deeper on this.

user-pic

I did the same thing! And truly... if it ever happens again, goodbye NYTimes print edition!

I just cancelled my NYT subscription. They used up their second chances long ago. I'll miss the book reviews but they aren't getting another dime from me.

With Biden today baosting that the Delaware Blue Hens football team could "kick Ohio State's ass," (see CNN website), Obama can just say: "Goodbye Columbus." Ohio is now a done deal for McCain.

Research 2000 and Rasmussen both say today that Obama's former double-digit lead in Maine is down to 4 points. McCain now has a shot at the one EV in Maine's conservative, moose-filled northern congressional district. (Maine allocates one EV per district plus 2 bonus EVs to the statewide winner.)

Still, overall it has been a good week for Obama.

user-pic

This coming from one who believes that ape was descended from man.

And Palin would say that man, ape and dinosaurs existed at the same time.

Maine has been polling in the double digits for Obama and Kerry won it by 8 points, i highly doubt that the poll there recently is anything but a out liner, there is no evidenced of why a large shift in Maine has happened.

You know, some men will find Biden's football fandom comforting...

just sayin'...

user-pic

Biden today baosting that the Delaware Blue Hens football team could "kick Ohio State's ass," (see CNN website), Obama can just say: "Goodbye Columbus."

get some air.

Hmm..

Oh God please tell me Ohioans are not apes enough to vote on a football game while the economy tanks...

By the way, Shame on CNN for even making it a topic into their ridiculous "ticker," they already are fucking war profiteers.

Just talked with a diehard buckeye fan who basically said this is an asinine story.

It's pure silliness. I can't believe Ohio reps are trying to make political hay out of it. OSU knows everybody hates them outside of the State - and Biden was rallying his local team for crying out loud.

It's a ridiculous none story, but shows the desperation of the GOP if they have to start running on "he wants his local College sports team to beat OSU"

Another great next week coming up for senator Obama. McWar keep on giving us the gifts

Here’s what McCain has to say about the wonders of market-based health reform:

Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.

And not to mention, that McWar still wants to privatize social security

user-pic

"more choices of innovative products"

Pray tell, what are these "innovative products" that are being kept from us due to lack of market competition? For gods sake, MD's are ethically bound to let us know of anything that would benefit our health or any health condition!

It is utter nonsense to think that "markets" influence our health care decisions!

Health care is like the almighty dollar. Do we have a choice of currency to use in this country? No! And in the same way, we all need MD's. Or psychologists, like me. Physical therapists, whatever.

It is complete nonsense to imagine there is a market place for health care. Picture your fruit and vegetable market on a Saturday. Do doctors and nurses come? People who grow their own herbs and so on? Please, give me a break!

mcShame and his Dame are full of sh#@$*&%t! (and that's the polite version)

We have farmer's markets and they're like totally popular. Why not surgery markets? or therapy markets? Step right up to the booth and receive your local health experience.

user-pic

Just step behind this screen - and remove your clothes. (Meanwhile the local perverts are selling views via a video hook-up!)

Looking for something else on youtube, I came across some scenes from Closet Land. For those who have not seen this, I recommend this movie (of course preaching to the choir, but we all need a reminder of why we fight the good (but hard) fight.

A little snipet:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc5F9bAmzl0&feature=related

user-pic

On that happy note... good night all.

You could buy and sell put options on heart surgeries.

user-pic

There ya go! The marketplace at work!

user-pic

They were handing those out at the DNC on the streets as well. I remember being offered them, but ignoring the people attempting to hand them to me.

user-pic

We live in Medina and just got ours in the mail today. Interviews with Daniel Pipes and Alan Dershowitz. Thank G-d Sarah Palin will save us from theses terrorists hell bent on destroying Medina, Ohio. I guess they're angry because we stole the name of one of their holy cities.

We got a copy of the DVD recently with our Raleigh News and Observer. The N&O felt bad enough about it that they published an article about how hateful the DVD is--but not so bad about it that they didn't take the advertising dollars. Their publisher said it was a "freedom of speech" issue, but I'm sure they wouldn't do the same favor for the KKK.

Going to the N&O website to look for the article, I learned the N&O actually published articles on this the day before and the day of distribution. I'm guessing there was more than a little disagreement between the advertising department and the reporters.

http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/1217021.html

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1216479.html

There have been a LOT of letters to the editor about the DVD, both pro and con. You can find them by searching the www.NewsObserver.com website.

someone wrote a 'pro' letter about this? Insane. Papers writing a 'we're sorry we did this to you' is not acceptable. This is not a freedom of speech issue. It is the media being political so unless they are declaring their politics openly, this is a violation of trust between the media and their customers. I am outraged at the notion that they have profited financially from doing this... it's sick!

We got the DVD here in Arlington, VA this week. I didn't pay any attention to it ("As seen on Fox News"???), but TheraP has inspired me....

I think we all owe TheraP an thank you for showing us that we can have power to make a difference with our voice.

user-pic

These things arrive. They're EVIDENCE! I have a file now!

user-pic

Ok. Here's one link related to this. Be sure and click on the place near the bottom of the page where it says: "read more." That will take you to the reviewer who calls it like delivery of a toothpaste sample (as the paper would have him view it!).

Meanwhile I'm looking for another link on the voter mailing mentioned above.

user-pic

Here's the other link - re the WI mailing that has people up in arms:

http://www.madison.com/tct/opinion/editorial/304878

This is "caging" -- this is happening in Florida too.

user-pic

I tell you. Although they have assured me I don't need to show an ID at the poll, I'm going there with not only my driver's license (which has that extra initial that I didn't use to register - but a series of passports. If the US govt did not have a problem when I changed my last name due to marriage and dropped that extra middle name and initial - and they issued me a passport and another etc... well, gosh darn they are not gonna deprive me of my vote!

But think of the people scared by this! So far as I know, only myself and one of the gay guys behind me got this voter mailing. Cuz I canvassed some of the neighborhood before going to the city hall.

One house has - get this! - a gorgeous neon Obama sign in the living room window! An architect! This is the level of passion for Obama! And the degredation of the other side!

I'm doing phone calls this weekend here in Indiana. I'm going to make sure people understand theze issues. We have the ID law in effect here but it'll be informative to find out if others have received mailings such as yours. This has to be countered, and countered aggressively.

user-pic

Definitely. People need to be aware. And ready to stand up for their rights!

user-pic

I apparently left off the link re this kind of mailing and the uproar about it:

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003849746

Came in The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News last Sunday as well as an advertisement on TV regarding the same.

user-pic

It came in the daily Tallahassee Democrat on Tuesday.

user-pic

If you look carefully at the enclose "literature" - you can read - in tiny print - all the newspapers that have succumbed to greed and accepted the ads. Expect for the WSJ and NYTimes, they are all local papers in battleground states.

I read one review about this, but can't find the citation, where the writer said how this had been "delivered like toothpaste" as a "sample" in the paper.

user-pic

"except" - not expect....

Vow. This is a bigger racket than one may have thought.

user-pic

The links are now above. Yes. Racket!

After all, we've had 8 years of racketeering under bush! One nation - racketeering - under bush.

or as one radio personality personality put it (and I'm blanking his name): The Bush Crime Family.

To be replaced by the Palin Crime Family.

But if there is a God, no one really convinced me yet, but if there is one- she or he sure has the Irony gene.

A DVD of how we all will be killed along with the headlines on the front page: You Just Got Poor.

God is a standup comedian working the Catskills.

user-pic

You asked the wrong wingnut outfit. You should've called the Republican Jewish Coalition:

a. They just 'fessed up to circulating push polls smearing Obama.

b. they've been running smear ads in Jewish publications claiming Pat Buchanan endorses Obama's views on Israel.

c. they've distributed Obsession before to Jewish mailing lists including rabbis.

RJC is the one if you ask me.

http://www.richardsilverstein.com/tikun_olam/2008/09/18/republican-jewish-coalition-funds-anti-obama-push-poll-smears/

Your post on your site about Adelson is very well-informed, Richard. I encourage everyone to check out his link.

And just cancel the damn newspapers. Do you really need them?

user-pic

People are worried about the economy. Islamofacists is waaaaay down on the list.

user-pic

Yes, but it's anti-Muslim. These folks are Americans too! We need to stand up for all people. And bigotry - of any type - is WRONG!

Wait -- a TV ad? They bought air time? Are other people seeing this ad and can anybody describe it?

The Change That You Deserve

From the Chicago Tribune:

"The slogan unveiled this week by House Republicans - "Change you deserve" - is already a trademark used by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to market its antidepressant Effexor XR."

Black Screen.

Fade into:

Scene of a thin grey haired man standing in a green field. Behind him we can see the sun is rising.

"I got the change I deserved with GOP."

Cut to a small child, in a sun dress, who looks up at him and smiles.

"I was tired, listless. I had lost interest in my usual activities--creating false attacks, acting as if I had been unfairly attacked about issues created out of whole cloth, drawing specious historical parallels, fawning over ideologically bankrupt manufactured father figures. Sure, I sent emails claiming that Obama was a Muslim, but somehow...it had lost the spark, the enjoyment of everyday life."

Cut to a child who rides by on a bicycle, and throws a newspaper on the front porch.

"That's when I found GOP."

Cut to man rowing in a scull across a still river. He turns to the camera, smiles.

"In clinical studies, GOP has been found to increase aggressiveness in the absence of actual provocation in 8 out of 10 users. In most users, the desire to gleefully attack returns in 1 week. Full enthusiasm for invented ideas in two. "

Cut to image of porch swing.

"With GOP, my attention to minor distractions fully returned, until I was again building them into major accusations of flawed character. Once again, my intense focus on pins, buttons, sentences fragments and remote relationships as absolute indications of personal virtue and ability was at its peak. For an entire weekend, I could once again choose the right moment to accuse a candidate of treason without cause--when I was ready, when the time felt right".

Cut to a series of blurred images: long, stringy haired teens in torn jeans and ironic 80's t-shirts lounging by the Washington Monument; picture of John Kerry in a Swift Boat during Vietnam;
Eiffel Tower. Arugula on plate. During these images, rapid voiceover in female voice:

"GOP may cause monosyllabism, inability to consider two differing concepts at the same time, memory loss or inaccurate recall of recently and repeatedly presented intelligence information, focus on size of automobiles or koro, sequential nicknaming, knowing mischaracterization, hooting. If you have a desire to read the collected works of Ann Coulter that lasts longer than four hours, this may be a sign of a dangerous condition and you should contact your physician immediately."

Cut back to man standing in field. American flag waving in the distance behind him, below a risen sun. A woman walks up beside him, puts her arm around him, and smiles.

Man:

"So get the change that you deserve. Talk to your Doctor about GOP. Soon, you'll be walking by the homeless on the street again and saying 'Let them get a job!'

Or better yet--let them get GOP."

Woman smiles.

Fade.

Robert dude quit bringing yer blog over here. Latest R2K is O 50 M 42. Meanwhile I wonder how the dereg health industry line will go down. Sidenote wish of day:
Will Mark Halperin trip over a rock and plunge into a pool of piranhas? Hope springs eternal.

I wonder if Pinocchio Palin has asked to dereg the sun bed industry?

All this deregulation I mean if Mccain keeps on this angle at some point does he become a Sex Pistols lyric?

Lol it was awful but I am chuckling :)

user-pic

Your ditty deserves wide recognition. I've posted it on a mudflats thread for you!

Brilliant!

Thanks :)

New Ras O 48 M 47 ...why does it feel like this poll is underselling the movement towards Obama. I dont think it is a bad poll by any means it just seems almost reluctant to show one candidate establishing a margin of more than 3 points. Perhaps their demographics are firmly entrenched in the 2004 model which as we all know is just a tad antiquated.

You forgot to appreciate Arlo Guthrie and Alice.

This is strictly part of the evangelical gotv effort. I would be very interested to know what states it is being distributed in. I would guess battlegrounds like MO, Ohio ( down state ), and IN are part of the mix.

Message: be scared, very scared, and don't vote for the evil democrats.

user-pic

Battlegrounds!

Jesus the new AP polls internal questions are mind bogglingly bad they make me sick to my stomach. Ron fournier is a total shitbag. The poll is borderline racism it is truly awful. Just unreal I am so mad right now I want to ffing drop the entire AP into a pit rabies infested starving rats neck deep in fecal matter

Yeah, they suck. The AP article up on Yahoo has a quote from some knuckledragger in southern Ohio saying, "we don't like blacks".

Ron Fournier: You fucking suck, man!

If I see that man on the street, I'll punch him.

user-pic

Didn't get to see this gem. Are they 9 feet tall? Are they climbing over the border fence from Mexico? Are they stealing our womanfolk? Do they have american patriots shooting machine guns at them protecting the homeland? Do they have them coming across the bering strait and rambo of the north is beating them back with her bare hands?

Wow, so many questions. I bet it's a gem. Anybody know?

I understand they have dark complexions. Enough to condemn them right there.

Hey! There's going to be a new thread for today or what?

Nope, they take it easy on the weekends. Let's push this puppy to 1,000!

I received a copy as a "special advertising supplement" in the Chronicle of Higher Education. After listening to a trailer for the film, I cancelled my subscription to CHE. It seems to me that this all needs much more attention from the MSM. Smearing your opponent is bad enough (as McCain ought to remember, if he remembers anything from 2000) but smearing a world religion with impunity ought to be taken more notice of by those who are supposedly responsible for getting our information to us.

Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia.

Or to put it in terms neocons can understand: "'Merica has always been at war with radical Islam (as if there were any other kind)."

These people want permanent war. It doesn't matter who. They want us in permanent fear. Fuck them. Fuck the neocons right in the ear. We will not be kowtowed.

Why is McCain allowed to say that Obama has received more money than anyone from Fannie and Freddie?

When:

The New York Times looked at contributions from Fannie and Freddie's boards of directors and lobbyists, who are technically not employees. That analysis found Fannie and Freddie-related contributors gave $116,000 to John McCain and his related committees, compared with $16,000 to Obama and his related committees.

McCain receives over five times as much money from Fannie and Freddie.

Sigh

Why does our news media not do their jobs!!!

Gallup Obama 50 Mccain 44 and remember this is the weekend that usually favors Mccain and Obama is still moving

McCain In Bunny Ears

Incidentally, has anyone noticed how appropriate McCain would look in bunny ears?

Now, seriously. I want you to picture him with the bunny ears on.

One ear drooping, slightly grandpa-ish, meshing ever-so-well with that frustrated grimace.

Doesn't that look just right?

Mr. Hewson,

I will never--never--visit your site following this appalling lack of manners.

P.S. Karl tells me to tell you he thinks you are an asshole.

I'm with you on that.

Kopp hiring proved Palin's fundamentalist street cred

Subsequent events suggest that the price of support for McCain by the fundamentalist Christian leadership would be a vice presidential candidate of their liking. Gov. Palin was a logical choice ...

Seems the Alaska bears are starting to come outta hibernation.

Heh. I received one of these DVDs in the mail. My husband thought it was an advertisment from Dillards. He just saw the word Obsession and didn't really look at it closely. When I got home and went through the mail, I got pretty pissed off that they had sent it to me. When I told him to take a closer look at it, he scratched through my mailing information, wrote "return to sender" and stuck it in the mailbox.

Great idea! And for those that come in the paper, return those too, with a request to cancel your subscription.

is this site broken today? Can't post.

Notone thread on this site for almost 15 hours what gives?

This is TPM, they close shop on the weekends.

I'm a librarian at a museum in New York, and received this dvd in the mail. Check your local library catalog to make sure they didn't just add it to the collection- most won't, but those in conservative areas/with low budgets (similar?!) may just keep it. (mine went into the circular file in ca. 5 secs.- not in the "to sell" box, that's for sure!)

Voting Republican may be a survival response

From " this article in New Scientist...

... his team discovered that social conservatives react more strongly to shocking images and sudden noises by sweating more and blinking harder, compared to liberals.

user-pic

Oops... Here's the link to the article.

I thought they *didn't* blink?

user-pic

Guess that means they lie.

Can anyone explain the term : Financial Treason.

I've tried to google it but I get sent off on wild goose chases that are empty on definition.

Thanks in advance for any links or explanations.

user-pic

Hmmm.  If the phrase "financial treason" doesn't google, chances are that it doesn't have a single, widely accepted meaning... other than what the words suggest on their face.

Since this thread seems to be going everywhere,
I just learned about this charming chap on another blog:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GBAsFwPglw

There you have it...institutionalized voter disenfranchisment/suppression under the guise of "Christianity". Lord help us.

user-pic

... and god bless the mind of the man in the street!

I live in southeast Florida (the infamous Palm Beach County, to be exact) and we've received 5 of these DVDs this week. 2 came via inserts in the newspapers (Palm Beach Post and the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel) and 3 in the mail. The DVDs received via the mail were sent to each of the 3 adults (we're all registered Democrats) living in our house (the only one who didn't get a DVD was my 8 year old son). The only thing I can figure is they got voter registration records for the mailing.

Where's Joe?

From this article in the NY Times...

... Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. -- the Other Running Mate -- has been absolutely butchering Senator John McCain across the Rust Belt this week.  It is not clear who has noticed.

For the many who have been wondering aloud why we haven't been hearing more from Joe Biden...  I wouldn't blame Joe.  He's been doing his thing, but the MSM spends its coverage according to where the ratings lie.

And I don't think I'd like to hear him whining about his coverage.  That's just bad form, especially from the designated primary "attack dog".

For many of these places in the rust belt, local news coverage is more likely to reach the populace than cnn or msnbc.

We should counter with "Borat"!

Check for Richard Mellon Scaife's scaly fingerprints...

ok so this is funny, the other day my boyfriend (whom I live with in florida, Bradenton) recieved a CD called Obsession, which by the looks of the cover design and obviously pricey packaging, is promoting hate against muslims. I instantly took interest in watching it since Im muslim, my boyfriend however isn't. I dont know what pissed me off more, the fact that they sent it out...period...or that they didnt send me one :P. I still havent seen it since my boyfriend keeps telling me it'll just piss me the f%8k off, but after reading all these posts I'm really tempted. Thank you TheraP for being so...well...HUMANE & standing up for your fellow man.

P.S: Help! I think I'm in redneck heaven, I see/ hear Pro McCain ads/rants everywhere, that and a few mullets every now and then *shudders*.

I'm in Boca Raton, FL (Palm Beach County). Two registered Dems in household, including myself, received DVDs. One registered Republican did not. All three of us are strong Obama supporters. There is some serious Republican money behind this for them to be sending multiple discs per household.

How is it a 501 (3c) group is allowed to distribute political propaganda during election time and maintain their tax exempt status??

Every rock you turn over reveals another sleazy McCain campaign tactic.

They wallow in garbage and sleaze and then have the nerve to say "country first"?

Divisive fear mongering from McCain who would rather start a war than lose an election. Completely devoid of integrity or class. How can anyone respect this man?? He's manipulated the country for his personal ambition and there's no level he wouldn't stoop to to get elected. Not presidential qualities by any means.

user-pic

Does the mailing mention that Obama sounds like "Osama"?

And that Barack is actually a black man? As in...black? I'm waiting for the New Yorker to do a cover with Barack climbing the twin towers holding Sarah Palin in his (black) grasp.

It'll be "satire" and we'll be accused of not "getting the joke".

Fortunately, John McCain's been looking more and more like my elderly neighbor who walks around with his fly open, hollering about the "damn squirrels". And come to think about it, Palin looks like his bitchy spinster daughter who wants to get him into a rest home as quickly as possible.

user-pic

Hey I live in Northwest Florida (Pensacola) and I received this DVD in the mail Saturday.

Last election these crowds that one could still hear echoing “four more years!” that resonated and ultimately stirred a winning cause, was based on Bush would do better in time of war. Did they forget the attracts happened on his watch?
I keep hearing polls insinuating McCain would do better in war because of his experience. Let’s reverse the situation. Who would do better making peace? Better yet. Who would do better in preventing war? Who is the best ticket on talks with our Arab and Muslim friends, McCain-Palin or Obama-Biden? Education is the key here, all nations learning from each other in a give and take of important attitude and feelings. One thing is certain, in the Muslim culture; it is easier for men to converse with each other rather then man and women that’s where Biden has the advantage over Palin. On the same token a man who cries fire (“I would fire him”) is a scary image of McCain’s hand slamming down on a big red button yelling “fire!” Our friends and allies of the Arab and Muslim nations would apt to have a better rapport with Obama

I received a copy while walking out of Obama's speech at Invesco Field. There was a group of people handing them out saying "Free DVD!" Did any other TPM'ers hear about that?

The DVD arrived as a supplement to The Philadelphia Inquirer on 9/14. I cancelled my subscription via an email to Pulisher, Editor, etc. to explain it was as a result of their choice to distribute propaganda.

We live in the Front Range of Colorado and our copies came in the mail, addressed *specifically* to us. We're registered Independents.

Word has it, via the callers polled on the local Progressive talk radio station here, that they're targeting registered Independents and Republicans.

All I know is just receiving those DVDs in the mail creeped me out, and I immediately shredded and discarded them.

I live in Grand Rapids, MI. This was sent out along with the Sunday supplement in The Grand Rapids Press ten days ago. Letters to the editor have been been pretty universally outraged that the paper would include such propaganda, even as a "free speech" item nestled in with the Meijer coupons.

I also just received 2 in the mail addressed specifically to myself and spouse here in Boulder, Colorado. Deeply disturbing.

user-pic

to be honest, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it. And I'm a progressive, die-hard Obama-loving Democrat.

Not sure what all the fuss is about here....
