WaPo: Palin's Critics Deride Her For Being From Small Town

Okay, here's something to keep an eye out for: The big news orgs playing along with Sarah Palin's bogus argument that critics of her experience are "looking down" on her for her small-town background.

From today's Washington Post write-up of the speech:

Derided by her critics as someone who comes from a town of fewer than 10,000 people, she went after Obama for his famous "bitter" comment about small-town residents, made at a San Francisco fundraiser.

Really? Critics are "deriding" her for merely being from a small town? Is that what they're doing?

I thought critics were merely pointing out that her small-town mayoralty didn't prepare her for the gig of leader of the free world. Is that "derisive" of her small-town background now?

Just like saying McCain's POW status doesn't prepare him for being President was attacking his service...

user-pic

The press has a clear choice at this crossroad. They either see the threat from Palin/McCain and step back in line, or they take the rocks thrown at them and start throwing back.

My guess is, by and large, the latter.

PEACE

Well said. The next few weeks will make it all the more clear whether individual journalists continue to play the game or actually do their job.

user-pic

Exactly! Why did Fred Thompson denegrate McCain's service like that? How dare you Thompson!

I know David put it on the front page, but I have to reiterate the question: Where's Hillary?

People aren't attacking the fact that she's from a small town - they're saying that being the mayor of nowhere does not qualify you to be leader of the Free World, whether you're a hockey mom or not.

Notwithstanding the fact that McCain is the Mayor of Crazytown . . . an element that seems to have gotten lost in all of this.

It's funny ... not funny ha-ha, but funny ironic, that every time she brings up the mayor schtick, I can't help but think of our mayor here who was a hand-picked dope of the former mayor. Now the former mayor had some clout and could speak well and was intelligent. This guy? Not so much.

I keep trying to picture him being the leader of the free world and it makes me weary. And the thing is, he's mayor of a much larger constituency than she was, and our community ain't that big, folks, at 200,000. God help us if McCain actually turns this media back into his lapdog.

Breathe ... breathe ... OK, I'm better now.

Btw, donate again today!

...and notwithstanding the fact that we've been enduring eight years with the Mayor of Simpleton (thanks, Andy Partridge).

If Palin's experience as a small-town mayor is comparable to Obama's experience as a community organizer, nearly her entire resume is equivalent to his first job out of college.

To echo Rudy's "question" - Do we want to give the Vice Presidency to someone two years into her second job in government who pads her resume with lies about her record?

user-pic

Yeah, they seem to be setting up straw men all over the place.

..and just like pointing out a 72 year old isn't as sharp as a 47 year old. Reasonable questions matter not in this election.

Palin is the one who is arrogant and condescending. Someone with 1.5 years in a real office can mock someone with 12 years in office?
She has no standing to mock and look down on anyone.

Coming from the AP that is amazing. Cant believe they actually have people doing their job over there. On a sad note, I wouldn't be surprised if that reporter wasn't handed there pink slip already by Ron Fournier.

It's surreal Greg.

The media is in on the joke - this terrible terrible joke they are trying to pull on America.

They'll get a backlash -

And the "San Francisco" dig was a dogwhistle to the anti-gay crowd.

The dogwhistles coming from St. Paul last night were deafening.

user-pic

There were plenty of dog whistles.

The most obvious to me was the bit about Mclame having the guts to fight EVIL [pause] the camera panned the audience - she just said Obama's the anti-Christ.

This election is about reality vs. delusions.

When Campbell Brown is the only journalist willing to ask hard questions, the institution has let us all down.

user-pic

I hate to be too snarky, but where have you been?

The media has been letting us down for over a decade, now.

Can someone give me a good response to a co-worker who I know will bring up the "He wrote 2 memoirs but no laws" claim?

See below; this is from an Obama campaign rebuttal posted here: http://www.samefacts.com/archives/campaign_2008_/2008/09/palin_v_reality.php

PALIN: “ But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform - not even in the state senate.”

REALITY: OBAMA PASSED THE MOST SWEEPING REFORMS SINCE WATERGATEIN BOTH THE ILLINOIS AND US SENATES, AMONG OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Obama Helped Pass The 2007 Ethics Reform Law, Which Curbed The Influence Of Lobbyists And Was Described As The “Most Sweeping Since Watergate.” In the first week of the 110th Congress, Obama joined with Senator Feingold to introduce a “Gold Standard” ethics package. Many of the Obama/Feingold bill’s most important provisions were included in the final ethics reform package passed by the Senate in late January: a full ban on gifts and meals from lobbyists including those paid by the firms that employ lobbyists; an end to subsidized travelon corporate jets; full disclosure of who's sponsoring earmarks and for what purpose; additional restrictions to close the revolving door between public service and lobbying to ensure that public service isn't all about lining up a high-paying lobbying job; and requiring lobbyists to disclose the contributions that they "bundle" - that is, collect or arrange - for members of Congress, candidates, and partycommittees. In January 2007, the Washington Post wrote in aneditorial that “…Mr. Reid, along with Sens. Russell Feingold (D-Wis.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.), deserves credit for assembling and passing this package.” In September 2007, the AP reported, “President Bushsigned a bill Friday that will require lawmakers to disclose more about their efforts to fund pet projects and raise money from lobbyists, a measure that backers call the biggest ethics reform in decades…Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. who had pushed for the bundlingprovisions and was one of four lawmakers who participated in a Democratic conference call to reporters said the measure marks "themost sweeping ethics reform since Watergate.” [S. 230, 110thCongress; S.1, Became Public Law 109-110-81, 9/14/07; AP, 9/15/07;TheWashington Post, Editorial, 1/21/07]

Obama Passed Illinois State Gift Ban Act “Heralded As the MostSweeping Good-Government Legislation in Decades.” In 1998, Obama passed the Illinois Gift Ban that prohibited legislators, state officers and employees, and judges from soliciting or receiving gifts from a person or entity with interests affected by government. The Chicago Tribune wrote, “Gov. Jim Edgar signed into law Wednesday anethics and campaign finance package heralded as the most sweeping good-government legislation in decades.” The law also required greater campaign finance disclosure and limited the uses for which raisedmoney could be spent. Obama said, “I have seen a general cynicism from taxpayers about government. They believe they have no influence on the process since they don't have the money of special interest groups. With the gift ban and the ban on Springfield fund-raisers that are contained in this legislation, I think at least some of thisconfidence will be restored.” [HB672, 3R P 52-4-1, 5/22/98; PA90-0737, 8/12/98; Chicago Tribune, 8/13/98; Chicago Independent Bulletin, 6/4/98]

Ø Illinois Ethics Bill Most Far Reaching Since Watergate,Product Of Bipartisan Work. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote ofObama’s bill, “The ethics restrictions would be the most far-reaching since the Watergate-era campaign financial disclosure law. They are the product of months of negotiations among two lawmakers of each party, other state officials and Mike Lawrence. He is an aide toformer Sen. Paul Simon, a Democrat, and used to be an aide to Edgar, a Republican.” [St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 5/24/98]

Obama And Lugar Passed Law Boosting U.S. Efforts To Keep WMDs AndOther Dangerous Weapons Out Of The Hands Of Terrorists. In 2006,Obama and Lugar introduced The Cooperative Proliferation DetectionAct, which was passed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committeeunanimously on May 26, 2006 and was eventually incorporated into the Department of State Authorities Act of 2006 and signed into law onJanuary 11, 2007. According to a Senate Foreign Relations Committeereport on its legislative activity in the 109th Congress, “The committee passed S. 2566, The Cooperative Proliferation Detection,Interdiction Assistance, and Conventional Threat Reduction Act of 2006by unanimous consent on May 26, 2006. The legislation authored by Chairman Lugar and Senator Obama enhances: (1) U.S. cooperation with foreign governments to destroy conventional weapons stockpiles aroundthe world; and (2) the United States' ability to provide assistance to foreign governments aimed at helping them detect and interdict weapons and materials of mass destruction. The legislation, which garnered 26 co-sponsors (including 8 committee members), sought to energize U.S.programs to secure lightweight anti-aircraft missiles…The initiative was modeled after the Nunn-Lugar program that focuses on weapons of mass destruction in the former Soviet Union. The legislation was signed into law on January 11, 2007, as a part of H.R. 6060, theDepartment of State Authorities Act of 2006.” [P.L. 109-472, 1/11/07;House Report 109-706, 9/3/06; S. 2566, 109th Congress; S.1949, 109th Congress; Senate Report 110-40, 3/29/07]

Ø Lugar Said It Was Accurate That Said Obama Reached Out To HimAnd They Passed Legislation To Lock Down Loose Nuclear Weapons.“Republican Sen. Dick Lugar (IN) today said an Obama campaign ad which features him is ‘accurate.’ The ad makes the point the Obama previously ‘reached out’ to Lugar to ‘help lock down loose nuclear weapons.’ Lugar is widely considered one of the most knowledgeable in the area of nuclear weapons proliferation and the coauthored of the1991 Nunn-Lugar Act on cooperative threat reduction. ‘He did’ reachout, Lugar said. He explained that in 2005, Obama asked if he couldjoin Lugar on a trip to Russia and other countries to visit sitesunder the Nunn-Lugar program. ‘After that, we had legislation that we cosponsored together which passed’ dealing with dangerous missiles.‘So I am pleased we had that opportunity to work together,’ Lugarsaid. ‘I'm pleased we had the association Sen. Obama describes.’ But Lugar made clear up front that while the ad was accurate, and he's comfortable with the association, ‘There is no chance I will consider running with Barack Obama.’” [MSNBC, 7/15/08]

Obama and Coburn Passed A Bill Creating A “Google-like” Database ForThe Public To Search Details About Federal Funding Awards. In 2006,Obama and Coburn co-authored a bill to create a “Google-like” database of information on federal spending. Obama Passed Law Ensuring That Wounded Veterans Recovering In Military Hospitals Do Not Have To Pay For Their Meals Or Phone Calls To FamilyMembers. In 2005, Obama sponsored and passed an amendment that to the2005 emergency supplemental appropriations act ensuring that wounded veterans recovering in military hospitals do not have to pay for theirown meals or phone calls to family members. The amendment was then passed in each of the following Congresses. Prior to passage of the amendment, service members receiving physical therapy or rehabilitation services in a medical hospital for more than 90 days were required to pay for their meals. Obama’s amendment required the military to provide free meals for service members in militaryhospitals undergoing recuperation or therapy as a result of wounds sustained in Iraq or Afghanistan. The amendment was retroactive toJanuary 1, 2005 in an effort to provide those injured service memberswho received bills for their meals with some relief from those costs. The amendment became law. [S. Obama Proposals Providing Improvements In Health Care For RecoveringSoldiers Were Passed Into Law, Including Requirements For Post-Deployment Mental Health Screenings And National Study On The Needs OfIraq War Veterans. H.R. 976, passed by the Senate on August 2, 2007,includes several provisions from bills originally sponsored by Senators Obama and McCaskill. The provisions would improve healthcare services and health care tracking for service members, and would require post-deployment, face to face mental health screenings for returning service members within 30 days. The bill also adopts other Obama-McCaskill legislation, the HERO Act, which would launch a major national research endeavor into the readjustment needs of returningservice members, veterans and their families. The bill also included measures to improve and reform the disability rating process. Obama Worked With Republicans To Pass Legislation, Which Became Law, Improving And Increasing Services For Homeless Veterans. In 2006,Congress passed a Veterans Affairs Committee bill which includedseveral provisions originating in Obama’s SAVE Act (S. 1180) and Homesfor Heroes Act (S. 3475). “The legislation…includes a number of proposals from legislation Senator Obama had previously introduced (S.1180, the SAVE Act and S.3475 the Homes for Heroes Act) to expand and improve services for homeless veterans. The bill permanently authorizes and increases funding to $130 million per year for a competitive grant program to provide homeless services to veterans. It greatly increases a successful program to provide rental vouchers tohomeless veterans. The legislation extends programs to providing treatment for veterans with mental illnesses and other special needs. And it permanently extends VA's ability to transfer property it owns to homeless shelters.” Obama worked with VA Committee RepublicansCraig and Burr on the committee legislation that eventually became law. Obama Passed Bipartisan Legislation That Expanded Health Care CoverageTo 154,000 Residents, Including 70,000 Children. As a state senator,Barack Obama sponsored and helped pass legislation that expanded andmade permanent Illinois’ KidCare program by raising eligibility from 185% to 200% of the federal poverty level. The legislation provided coverage for an additional 20,000 children and 65,000 more Illinois adults in the first year, and by 2007 had expanded health care to70,000 kids and 84,000 adults. In its endorsement for his Senate race, the State Journal-Register wrote, “Obama brings similar common-senseviews to improving health care in America - for example, as a state senator he championed the successful KidCare program that assiststhousands of children of the working poor.” The bill was sponsored inthe state House by Sandra Pihos, a Republican and passed 42-13. Obama Passed A Bill Creating $100 Million Earned Income Tax Credit AsA Member Of The Minority Party In The Illinois Senate. In 1999, Obamawas the lead sponsor of a bill making Illinois the 11th state to adoptan earned income-tax credit. The bill provided that each individualtaxpayer is entitled to a credit against the tax imposed by the Act inan amount equal to 5% of the federal earned income tax credit allowed.Then-Gov. George Ryan opposed the move, but an unlikely politicalalliance – including Republicans and Democrats – formed to reduce thetax burden on working poor families. The AP wrote, “The new law, whichoffers about $105 million in tax breaks over the next three years, gives a state income tax credit equal to 5 percent of a similarfederal tax credit. For the average working family making less than$30,580, that amounts to about $55 a year, or 15 cents a day. Themaximum credit for families with two or more children is $191 ayear.” [91st GA, HB 3939; 4/14/00, 3R P; 59-0-0; P.A. 91-0700,5/11/00; Chicago Tribune, 4/10/99]

Obama Passed Near-Unanimous Death Penalty Overhaul Package. Obama wasthe chief co-sponsor and voted for bill creating the CapitalPunishment Reform Study Committee Act. The proposal, which wasapproved on a 57-1 vote, was virtually identical to reforms pushed in2002 by then-Gov. George Ryan. If passed by the House and signed intolaw by the governor, the bill would let judges rule out a deathsentence for someone convicted solely on the testimony of a jailhouseinformant, accomplice or single witness; let the state Supreme Courtoverturn a death sentence that was “fundamentally unjust.; Reduce thecrimes eligible for the death penalty by focusing on “inherentlyviolent” offenses; Expand defendants’ access to genetic evidence usedagainst them; Ban police officers from the police force if theycommitted perjury in a murder case; and Require juries to consider adefendant’s history of abuse or mental illness when deciding whether to impose the death sentence. Obama said, “As far as the Bill goes, it doesn't address whether the death penalty is applied fairly to allraces and in all regions of the state. And it doesn't appease those who want capital punishment eliminated.” [93rd GA, SB 0472; 4/3/03,3R P; 57-1-0; 5/29/03, HA1 SC; 56-3-0; 11/5/03, OAV P; 58-0-0; P.A.93-0605, 11/25/03; Pantagraph, 4/4/03; Associated Press, 4/24/03]

The short form is a list of 131 bills sponsored by Barack Obama since 2005, not including bills he was a cosponsor or contributor to. He has also co-sponsored 619 bills in the same time period.

He spearheaded the most sweeping ethics reform in a generation. He was instrumental in in passing a law to secure lose nuclear weapons, one of the biggest threats to our way of life imaginable. He made sure that police interrogations need to be taped, something that law enforcement originally opposed, but now everybody agrees that it works and it was the right thing to do.

It's not surprising that the McCain campaign doesn't know about any of this (or hopes that you don't know about any of this) because they know they can win an election about issues. They'd rather lie about his character and his experience and hope that hope that you don't catch on for yet another 4 years.

From Andrew Sullivan

I guess we should thank Matt Scully for inserting the word "major." You can go look at Obama's State Senate legislative record here. And his US Senate record here. At last count, sponsorship of 820 laws in Illinois, and authorship of 152 bills and co-sponsorship of 427 in Washington. The 2007 Ethics Reform bill alone cannot be dismissed as simply non-existent. And since part of Palin's own claim to substance is an ethics reform bill, it seems extremely weird that she should believe that Obama's record is a total zero.

At her first press conference, why not ask her why she said that Obama has never passed a single reform, when he passed the 2007 Ethics Reform, described by many as the most sweeping package of its kind since Watergate. Of course, she doesn't know. She was given this speech. But she should be asked to respond to the question of why she said something patently untrue to the entire country.

But you can see the idea here: to keep equating Palin's experience with Obama's. At one point, Rudy Giuliani claimed that after her first day as governor of Alaska, Palin had more executive experience than Joe Biden and Barack Obama combined. So there's your standard. It's fatuous and stupid. But if you repeat it often enough, it might just work.

Why does Andrew Sullivan sound so bitter?

I don't detect bitterness at all - more like shock and disgust at what's become of American conservatism.

But you can email him and ask: andrew@theatlantic.com.

user-pic

He was responsible for passing a major piece of ethics legislation that curtailed the corrupt influence of lobbyist.

A better question might be how many of the paid lobbyist and former paid lobbyist on McCain's campaign staff, well over 50 I think I have heard, have actually written legislation. And that's the beggest problem. Lobbyist wright the legislation and then give it to the legislatures to enact.

All these guys are on McCain's team. Obama won't even accept money from them, let alone help.

It's the payola, stupid.

"Deride" isn't what bothers me about that sentence: it's the "she comes from" part. What I'm deriding her about is being mayor of a town of less than 10,000 people and pointing to that as experience worthy of the vice presidnecy. There's a big difference. I don't care where she comes from.

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

Yep.

A horse that can count to ten is a remarkable horse, but not a remarkable mathematician.

How about he wrote plenty of law and is, in fact, a lawyer.

Obviously, whoever wrote that was a moron or a wanker or both. It's about the bizarre notion that being the part-time mayor of a 9,000-person town is a somehow qualification for the presidency.

But I do think it may well prove far more productive for Democrats not to focus on her inexperience -- except as a rebuttal to their mind-boggling continued attacks on Obama on this front -- but instead to turn the lense on:

** Her lunatic-fringe, dangerous extremism.

** What McCain's inability to stand up to the extreme right-wing of his party in the veep pick says about the wimp factor.

** Her continued lies on many fronts, from Troopergate to the Bridge to Nowhere to earmarks.

** The absurd notion that she and McSame are reformers.

user-pic

Also people have been actually concerned for her welfare in delivering a special needs baby in a small town.

And questioning her judgment that she seemed not to be concerned about delivering in a small town - knowing the baby was Downs - what if that baby had needed intensive care at birth?

This is reality. But then we live in the reality-based universe - and that's just not ok with repubs.

Seems to me Palin is looking down on reality!

user-pic

Sarah Palin would not know reality if it crawled up in her and died.

user-pic

Which critics? I'm criticizing her for being a lying phony with insufficient knowledge and experience to lead the nation. Small town doesn't enter in to it.

user-pic

Lying Phony - bears repeating.

Picking up on hoppy's post below this:

Contemptuous Lying Phony

user-pic

I have read that Alaska's governor only works 90 days a year. If that is true, she has about 140 days of experience as governor, which is about 5 months worth of actual work. Unless you believe that the job of being President is so easy, so trivial, that any citizen selected at random is competent to do the job well, she isn't in any way qualified to be a candidate for Vice President, and because of McCain's age and health, that means being a candidate for President.

By picking such an unqualified person for his Veep, McCain demonstrated his contempt for our country. That the person he picked has a history of flirting with secessionists, a group we fought a huge war against, just proves his utter contempt for us.

So besides writing two memoirs, Obama has authored the following bills.

Thanks for posting that. I have to assume that this is Obama's rope-a-dope: let the Rebumblicans exhaust themselves talking about his lack of experience vis-a-vis Palin, then trot out his record in the Senate. You'd think they'd already have checked this out before basing their campaign on it, but...
As for small-town criticism, didn't Karl Rove already slam the kee-rap out of Palin's lack of experience on Face the Nation?\

Balz must have been talking about critics like Karl Rove, who derided Tim Kaine for being a mayor of a tiny city of 200,000.

Obama has done more than just write two memoirs!!!! Here is a list of bills that he has sponsored.

By picking such an unqualified person for his Veep, McCain demonstrated his contempt for our country

Thank you - contempt. That's the word I've been looking for.

Palin's speech fires up the base -- the Democratic base.

http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/09/great-speech-for-both-bases.html

Well, looks like Palin managed to cow WaPo and Mr. Balz (kinda of ironic name given the circumstances) with her attack on the media!!

BTW, that much vaunted mayoral experience? Not so much! GOP power-brokers forced Palin to hire a city administrator to run Wasilla when she came close to provoking a recall because of irrational and unconscionable firings (like firing the City Librarian because she would not consider banning certain books).

For more on Palin from someone who's known her since '92 (homemaker Anne Kilkenny), check out http://www.andrys.com/palin-kilkenny.html. If only half of the information here is true, Palin is very bad news -- typical Republican piranha.

Free Speech? Not with Sarah! She's against the Constitution it would appear!

Palin Speaks - Stock Market Falls!

I literally feel sick about all this. There was a day where, at the very least, I had respect for John McCain. He served our country valiantly and heroically, and he did go out on a limb from time to time to buck his party, which is admirable. I very rarely agreed with his politics, but that did not diminish my respect for him. But by choosing Sarah Palin, it goes to show his desperation to win an election and his willingness to put politics and party before country, something he constantly accuses Senator Obama of doing. He obviously did not choose Sarah Palin for her ability to tackle international issues. National issues? Maybe for the Republic of Alaska, since that's the only "country" she is willing to put first.

I feel insulted.

Obama/Biden 08 - Restoring America's Promise and ALWAYS Putting Our County FIRST.

McShame - I was a POW. Ankorage Barbie - I'm from a small town. Let's get together and save the world! Where's Mork and Mindy when you need it?

Here's a question for the press when they finally get a shot at actually asking Governor Palin a question:

Considering your maverick, take on you own party narrative, who will you endorse in the Alaska Senate race between scandal ridden Republican Ted Stevens and Democratic challenger Mark Begich?

Does anyone know the origin of the pathetic rumors about Palin?

Keep in mind that Rove is perfectly capable of orchestrating a smear campaign of his own, but attacking Palin, as long as it serves his narrative.

Palin is full of hot air and light on substance--that sums up who she is. I found her rant not speech comical. Dems are going to bury her.

Palin clearly started something she can't finish. She's toast.

Can somebody please explain this "hockey mom" nonsense to me? Is she running for VP of Canada?

It wouldn't be particularly helpful for Hillary to do something right now, while the convention is still going on. If she is working cooperatively with Obama (and pray God she is - after the convention, and the emergence of this horror, I have to believe they will!!), they will probably wait for that mystical 'right moment' (which he seems to identify so well) when the situation is right for Hillary to be heard loud and clear and to get the message across. Probably some women's issue will arise or Palin will be asked about abortion, or some such ... NOT that Hillary's heft is limited to those types of issues, by any means, but that's where her voice would be most effective and her standing to speak forcefully absolutely unquestioned.

Two points and something one must note:

A) There is always a backlash inferiority complex by those who live in small towns or states not the center of commerce. I grew up in Illinois near Chicago and then moved to small town WI that was becoming an exurban part of the Chicago Metro Area. Small town inferiority was rampant and even open contempt for the big city, the money the knowledge the lifestyle. It is also what Nixonland's author wrote describing Nixon's Orthogonians, the non elites who are smitten.

B) It is a defense shield how dare you criticize McCain for picking me a woman and small town girl because if you critisize me for my life than you undercut McCain's decision and the legitimacy of their ticket....period.

The pushback is from the party as a whole. She will try to do this indignant posture with the press even with Schaeffer or others....but I doubt that she gets in those chairs...they will do a Fox bit and some local news bits....but we will have to wait for Biden's humor to indict her as WTF?

I have to hope that Obama ignores her and keeps Biden muzzled for a bit. Hilary should be the attack person on this. As for motivation, if McSame wins, Palin is head of the senate... that should scare some people into action.

I'm from a small town and was friend's with the mayor's son growing up. Guess what? Palin ain't qualified for President or Vice President and attacking her for her negligible experience is very valid. Quite simply attacking her lack of experience is not equal to attacking small towns or small town life or small town government.

After 8 years as governor, maybe she'd be qualifed. 20 months? No. Fucking. Way.

My question is why give up a promising career (for a Republican oil drilling fascist) to jump aboard this stinking, sinking ship? Why team up with the albatross? I think she was escaping something in Alaska.

I smell indictments.

I beg to differ for a moment. I don't see the base fired up, not the way it should be. I am pretty cynical, alright absurdly cynical, yet last night's slate of speeches has made me angrier than anything I have ever seen at a political event. I just don't see Democrats really expressing the anger at the news media for applauding the Palin speech when it was deeply mean-spirited and completely off task of making it seems as Palin is ready to be POTUS. This was a convention full of lies and misnomers and derision for the press. And the press is eating it up. More on the most cynical night of politics in a long time: http://airingofthegrievances.blogspot.com/2008/09/angriest-thing-i-have-ever-written-jm.html

Whoops I apologize, I kept getting server errors when try to post.

Andrew is a conservative. He is republican, or was. He's disapointed in the state of his party. I would be too if I was him. But I don't think he's bitter at all. He stands for his beliefs, backs up his rhetoric, and admits when he's wrong. I read him all the time. I might not agree with everything he says, but I respect him.

About the RNC speeches yesterday, David Ploufe sent out an email early this morning saying "This demands a response." and then basically said "Respond by donating another $__ today!"

It's now 12:30 EST and I still haven't heard any Obama camp rebuttals to last night's garbage fest. So, if Obama responds loudly and openly, I'll think about donating some more money.

Am I in the dark or am I right about them not doing anything yet?

Arrgh, having issues with commenting here. Apologies for the double post.

Last time I checked, small town boy John Mellencamp was endorsing Obama.

The disconnect that bothers me the most is that one day she has no idea what the VP does and the next day she is the most qualified person in the country to lead the most powerful nation in the world.

Her arrogance is astounding.

New right wing talking points being dished out today:
-Sarah Palin is the American Margaret Thatcher.
-Sarah Palin is the next Ronald Reagan.

Yep, and the media will gobble it up.

Josh, I think you will hear a sane and well-reasoned response from Obama tonight when he appears on, of all things, Billo The Clown's show. Right before, or right after, can't remember, McThuseleh's speech.

The media in general is giving rave reviews to her speech and calling her "star" -- a star on Obama's level. I can't believe they have the audacity to compare her speech last night to Obama's 2004 convention speech, but they have done just that -- over and over.

We have to face facts -- the media is falling hard for this woman.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/156994

One last thing. Where is Hillary? Is she willing to REALLY help Obama even after she wasn't given VP?

I don't know, but Politico has a story about her advisors (mainly Woolfson) defending Palin against sexist attacks.

But Carville and Begala seem pretty pissed off at the prospect of Palin being VP, so one can only hope that Hillary get out there soon.

user-pic

I thought critics were merely pointing out that her small-town mayoralty didn't prepare her for the gig of leader of the free world. Is that "derisive" of her small-town background now?

Not only is it "derisive" of her small-town background, it is so derisive as to qualify as sexism, and any other kind of ism you can think of.

Never have I seen a person with such a thin resume, someone so devoid of qualifications for the job she is seeking, be so arrogant and condescending about it.

I hate to admit it but this family gives me the creeps. I get a Beverly Hillbillies vibe from them. This point is tangential at best but definitely hillbillyish - my apologies to hillbillies everywhere for besmirching their good name.
I have a family member deeply involved in smowmobile racing (in the hall of fame actually) who has met Todd Palin. Piper Palin's middle name is Indy - as in the model of snowmobile Todd Palin races. An fact not denied by the family! Can't wait for them to represent us in the highest offices of the rest of the world. I'd rather send Jethro actually.
I don't know why I feel it important to add this but I live in the same less than 10,000 population town in which I was born and raised.

Once again,a mean spirited raging speech with all the shame dumping techniques such as scapegoating, blaming, the Rethugs have mastered over the years.Combined with the Rudy fear provoking,the-terrorists-are-coming-to-get-you speech;the intended effect is to scare you and shame you into voting for the only ones who can help you--THE RETHUGLICANS.

The wapo has a feeding tube going directly from the republican party to their newswire. It doesn't even have to swallow since the party line is fed intravenously to the computers.

Her small town keeps getting bigger, it's supposedly 10,000 strong now, but the official cencus lists it at 6,715, with one school.
She supposedly took on big oil but in truth she only renegotiated the size of royalties every alaskan citizen gets = $1,500.
What an executive, what a leader, what a scam.
