Virginia GOP Planning Rally To Reach Out To Minorities -- Starring George Allen!
Finally -- real minority outreach from the GOP. The Virginia Republicans have a big rally coming up this Saturday that's designed to reach out to minority voters in Fairfax County.
Guess who is one of the featured speakers?
George Allen. Yes, that George Allen.
We checked in with the state GOP to ask if Allen is really an effective front-man for the party's efforts to win over minorities, given the "macaca" scandal.
The answer? Yes! "George Allen has an excellent record on issues of diversity, reaching out to people," Gerry Scimeca, communications director for the state party, told us. "His whole career, his whole life have been a testament to a guy who's treated people equally across racial lines, across every kind of line."
Asked whether "macaca" might cloud the message a bit, Scimeca said the whole thing was a smear-job by the Dems: "Anyone had to go on Wikipedia to be offended by it. And you know how people can mess with Wikipedia."
Scimeca argued that Allen's father was a football coach who held up his players, many of whom were African-Americans, as role models for his children. "This is not a racist man," Scimeca said. "He never did anything -- this was totally out of character."
Come to think of it, maybe George Allen is the best spokesperson for the GOP's minority outreach, after all.

I'm suddenly reminded of this video concerning black folks and George Allen..lol : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmxpX6I0qQE

Don't worry: I'm pretty sure that Alan Keyes has George's back. And Al's real popular with minority communities.

Er, Wikipedia? Not, like, a dictionary? Or someone from the region?
Although we all know those n..atives can say anything just like the Wikipedia, don't we, Mr. Scimeca?

Technically, punching someone is reaching out to them.

It's not just McCain who doesn't get it. This is bound to drive the few minorities voting for the party away. It's.....brazen.

Perhaps Sen. "McCaca" should have party for the black delegates who attended the Republican National Convention.
All 39 of them.
And if he'd like a larger party, maybe he can invite the 115 Hispanic delegates.
No count on the Asian or Native American delegates he might also invite.
Suppose you did some outreach and nobody came....

Yeah, the guy who has a noose hanging in his office as decor is just the guy you want to connect to the African-American community. Oh, and the Confederate flag really is a turn-on too.
I never cease to be amazed at how tone-deaf the GOP can be sometimes.

I remember reading somewhere about VA Republicans holding a rally in Richmond for black Republicans, renting out a convention center that could hold six thousand. Nine people showed up. Based on that (allegedly in 1994), it's kinda hard to not improve...

That's the real point. Macaca-man probably is the best they can do. Especially in the wake of a convention that had the smallest minority presence in decades.

Every day I shake my head and think, "They can't top this," and then they do. I was incredulous when McCain made the centerpiece of his agenda stopping earmarks, and making sure we'd "know the names" of those who request them, with the Earmark Queen standing next to him. I was perplexed when he shifted his focus to taking down the fat cats and lobbyists who run Washington, forgetting that they run his campaign. They topped it this week when they touted the endorsement of the Rothschild who lives on a 3,200 estate in England, who claims she can't support Obama because he is "elitist." The Allen participation in the "Diversity Rally" fits perfectly into this pattern.
This is beyond irony. "My friends," we've fallen down the friggin rabbit hole.

They have GOT to be kidding. Can they truly be that stupid? I honestly wonder what goes through the Repub mind, sometimes!

There is only one reason why Allen would put himself in that situation. Undoubtedly he and his supporters are planting the seeds for Allen's 2012 presidential campaign.
If it wasn't for the Macaca moment being caught on video, I have little doubt that Allen would presently be the republican nominee.
September 18, 2008 2:44 PM | Reply | Permalink
I agree. It's so they can actually have an example when they say "George Allen has an excellent record on issues of diversity, reaching out to people."
But, you know, you can't just whitewash the nooses and the Confederate flag and the Macaca moment with a couple of staged events which no one will attend.
To rehabilite his image he would have to demonstrate that he actually changed his point of view--by admitting he was wrong, as did Senator Byrd. It doesn't work if you insist on denying that you ever did anything wrong in the first place.
Maybe they are just planning to hammer away at the Obama presidency with passive-agressive racism so much that they think the country will be ready for a white supremicist in four years.

Maybe not the Republicans, if I can be unduly fair, but this seems to be a meme on racist sites like Stormfront.

"Nathan Bedford Forrest must be rolling in his grave..."
You say that as if it's a bad thing. You're right, Sen Byrd has betrayed the KKK. My God, you've put us all to shame.
(And actually, Byrd was an Exalted Cyclops; David Duke(R) was the Grand Wizard)

Allen really is one of the dumbest politicians I have ever seen in my life. That shit-eating pandering grin of his, ugh.
His infamous "macaca" moment sealed his political fate, because he was so dumb trying to explain what he said, and each time he dug himself deeper in a hole.

Sure its funny, but its not that much of a surprise.
This is, after all, the campaign that chose fired Golden Parachuter Carly Fiorina as their spokesperson on business issues, deregulation architect Phil Gramm as their Economic Advisor and scheduled heiress Cindy MaCain to address the country on the subject of prosperity.
What are they trying to do, put comedy writers out of work?

Are these people idiots? I must have missed when as a state senator, George Allen voted against establishing a state holiday for MLK. I must have missed all those Confederate Flags in his law office. I must have missed that noose in his office.

Allen used to keep a noose hanging on his wall back when he was still in state politics. I can't recall if this was while he was governor or when he was int he House of Delegates. The man is insufferable and is absolutely NOT a friend of minorities! Although this does appear to be in synch with the McCain theme of hoping that if they just say Allen's a supporter of diversity people will believe them. Then again Jeff Frederick is the state GOP chairman and he makes Allen look like a moderate.

Seriously, last time these good ol' boys held an 'event' they called it a Hoe'down/fundraiser, and chose as their featured guest speaker big media Ho' Laura Ingraham.
You could hear the macacas cry for miles, they were laughing so hard
But it gets better.
Does anyone remember the poster they created to advertise that event?? I have it framed for posterity ..It's a bright shiny red classic pick up truck parked in front of an old whitewashed building once used as slave quarters.

Of course Allen would be their minority outreach specialist...
...in exactly the same, cynical, in-your-face, "we don't give a s**t about your creamy-soft-center sensitivities" way that Palin was chosen to attract the "disenfranchised" female vote.
It is the manifestation of all-things-Orwell made flesh. The Ministry of Love wages war, the Ministry of Truth spews lies and rewrites history on-the-fly.
Remember, these who literally screwed this country into the ground in every way -- political standing in the world, economy, outsourcing the core functions of the federal government, putting dysfunctional cronies in charge of our safety and health -- are now "reformers" too.
But, then, they have been re-forming this country in ways it was never meant to go for almost 30 years now.
And the creamy-soft-center of the voting populace, the "swing voters" lo these past 30 years, have been happily lapping up this milk of human meanness, while the vast majority failed to go to the polls.
That has given them a comfort and confidence that allows them to make such obvious moves, transparency of such poke in the eye audacity.
So, to stay with the trite, we have an honor bound obligation to put truth to the tired old concept that pride goeth before the fall, eh?
They are school-yard bullies who have literally been stealing our lunch money for way too long. It must stop, and it must stop now.
Well, okay... in November.

Well I think this is just rich.
OTOH, you have to go with the politicians you got. So what else are they gonna do? What if the GOP held a Minority Outreach rally and no one came?
September 19, 2008 5:42 AM | Reply | Permalink
WaPo has an article on this, if anyone is interested. Seems the GOP was expecting 1000 for the rally; the GOP itself says the crowd was 500, which probably translates to 250 in real numbers.
No word on how many in the crowd were actually minorities, but there were two Democratic demonstrators there, one an A-A woman, the other a woman of Asian descent.
