Using Palin's Bush Doctrine Gaffe To Frighten Voters
We tend to shy away from posting Web vids. But this one's worth a look, because it's a pretty powerful effort to use Sarah Palin's Bush Doctrine gaffe to frame her experience deficit in starkly emotional terms.
The message is that we should be afraid, very, very afraid, of the specter of Palin as commander-in-chief...
The video is the work of the National Security Network, the progressive think tank started by former Bush counter-terrorism official Rand Beers.
It features all the trappings of a GOP fearmongering ad, complete with visuals of missiles and audio of a scary heartbeat. If those 527s ever do gear up on the Dem side, this is the sort of stuff we'll probably be seeing more of.

MCCAIN IS THE TARGET. Palin is a distraction. Focus on MCCAIN!

I agree that we should focus on McCain but I disagree about the continued sympathy for Palin. That might be true if she hadn't been so nasty and dismissive of Obama. It might be true if she hadn't been caught in a ton of lies and be under investigation for abuse of power.
She's becoming increasingly less sympathetic each day that passes.

I think this makes McCain look pretty bad as well for supporting the Bush Doctrine so fully.
It has some element of the Lyndon Johnson Daisy ad, which is fair game at this point. McCain will take us even further down the spiral into another 8 year national nightmare of war.

Yes, let the media go after Palin...they finally smell blood.
Obama should focus on McCain. Not McCain/Palin.
"I'm running against John McCain"
Biden can address Ms. Palin at times. But Barack should focus on McCain.
It's weird, every time Obama talks about Palin, she somehow gets stronger--whether they are good shots or not...she just grows in relevance. He needs to ignore her and focus on McCain.

Ad count for today....
3 Obama ads attacking McCain and
1 attacking palin for her stance on aerial wolf hunting. and
1 attacking palin/McCain on abortion rights. and
1 attacking McCain for distorting Obama record on sex education. and
the ad posted here.
Not to shabby if I do say so myself, its not as if McCain/Palin hasn't given enough ammo to use in ads and they certainly have angered many different groups.

The wolf ad is one powerful attack. More please!
The one of Planned Parenthood stays close.
The Obama one about the lobbyists on McCain camp is the best of the official three launched today.
But the best attack was not an ad, was the interview on The View (known on The Simpsons as Afternoon Yak). As Johnny Carson once said, that's "crazy, wild stuff".
I woke up this morning concerned, but as the day passes, I feeling that the worst is almost over and the best is about to begin...

And for the trolls, I'll offer you nothing more that a good, cold and tasty glass of STFU!

Yay! This is almost exactly like my (albiet much wordier) ad posted here.
But to your point, how much does it cost to run a TV ad in your local market? On local cable?
I wonder if it would be possible to have community-organized, local grassroots 527's to fund ads in small markets that are nonetheless swing districts. During the 2004 election, my parents enlisted some of their richer friends to put their own anti-Bush radio ads on the local radio stations and spent their own money to run anti-bush text ads in the local paper. TV isn't the only forum.
Instead of whining that Obama isn't being aggressive enough, we should be doing our part to get our message across. This is our campaign, remember? Post your scripts for 527 ads in my thread here.

That's an OK ad - not something that would be effective on TV, but certainly it's something. Of course, if they want to put it on TV that's fine with me. And I like how they've got the quotes from McCain also endorsing the same doctrine. Sitting next to Fred Thompson was a nice touch, too.
I still think the ad about her wolf-hunting policy is gold. That one should run on national daytime TV every day.

To Schmedley: I see your concern, but I don't think its warranted. Palin should be demolished. Doing so will undercut McCain. Not the job for Obama himself, perhaps, but success in establishing Palin as radical right, unqualified, and utterly undistinguished will help the overall effort. It: 1) demonstrates McCain's poor judgment (one of Obama's key themes); 2) shows that McCain is just a craven politician, out to win any any cost (which directly undercuts McCain's only real chance for victory, namely, persuading enough voters that he is a "reformer" and will "clean house" after Bush); 3) drives a deeper and deeper wedge between McCain and the swing voters, who may be appalled at the pick once they see just how awful Palin is.
And the fact is that the prospect of Palin as president of the United States is indeed frightening. I approve of that ad.

Agreed. Once the Russia Remark came out in her interview, this is no longer about perceptions.
If McCain keels over, we can now expect Palin to point missiles back at Russia to enforce agreements which exist only in her tiny mind.
This is way huge, and we must face it down.

To demolish Palin, you'll have to disabuse the media of their love affair with her celebrity. She sells too many ad slots for them to give that up. However, if Obama comes after McCain with no holds barred, then the media will be all over that story like lookie-lous at 3 car pile up on I-95. Grab the fickle corporate media's attention and hold it for awhile, and then Palin's just an asterisk.

I've listened to the ad, I've listened to the interview and read the transcript. I do not see the gaff. You may not like her and McCain's view and it might be worded many ways, but that does not make it a gaff. She didn't say anything like '57 states', or 'my Muslim faith" (though some suggest this was truth and not a gaff). Palin did not make a gaff and screaming it's one does not make it true. Or are you practicing the real Bush Doctrine: Repeat a lie often enough and it will be taken as the truth. ?
September 12, 2008 2:55 PM | Reply | Permalink
Actually you're technically right, it wasn't a gaffe, i.e. misspoke. What this was as the inability to answer a basic political question: "What do you think of the Bush Doctrine." She didn't even have enough knowledge of it to ask Gibson "Are you refering to his doctrine of pre-emptive strikes?"
This is worse than one of those Iraq-Pakistan Border gaffes.

Oilbama, called so because he voted for the Bush/Cheney Energy Bill, has truly exposed himself as a Sexist Pig.
Oilbama's 28 male staffers divided among themselves total payroll expenditures of $1,523,120. Thus, Obama's average male employee earned $54,397.
Oilbama's 30 female employees split $1,354,580 among themselves, or $45,152, on average.
Why this disparity? One reason may be the under-representation of women in Oilbama's highest-compensated ranks. Among Oilbama's five best-paid advisors, only one was a woman. Among his top 20, seven were women.
Again, on average, Oilbama's female staffers earn just 83 cents for every dollar his male staffers make. This figure certainly exceeds the 77-cent threshold that Obama's campaign website condemns. However, 83 cents do not equal $1. In spite of this 17-cent gap between Obama's rhetoric and reality, he chose to chide GOP presidential contender John McCain on this issue.
Oilbama responded Aug. 31 to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's Republican vice-presidential nomination. Palin "seems like a very engaging person," Obama told voters in Toledo, Ohio. "But I've got to say, she's opposed -- like John McCain is -- to equal pay for equal work. That doesn't make much sense to me."
Oilbama's criticism notwithstanding, McCain's payment patterns are the stuff of feminist dreams.
McCain's 17 male staffers split $916,914, thus averaging $53,936. His 25 female employees divided $1,396,958 and averaged $55,878.
On average, according to these data, women in John McCain's office make $1.04 for every dollar a man makes. In fact, all other things being equal, a typical female staffer could earn 21 cents more per dollar paid to her male counterpart -- while adding $10,726 to her annual income -- by leaving Barack Oilbama's office and going to work for John McCain.

More WOLF! Aerial hunting of grizzlies & wolves isn't even popular in ALASKA. It's not just that a lot of women don't like it, neither do a lot of hunters - no fair chase. More important, it's visceral, visual, and gets right into that vindictive, bullying side of Palin's. For example:
"Michael Vick got 23 months in prison for dog-fighting, with 6 dogs dying.
Sarah Palin supports & funds the Aerial killing of wolves, with at least 795 killed so far.
And she's running for Vice-President."
(Oh yeah. That Governor's plane she sold (not) on eBay? She sold it to a big-game hunter to take big money "hunters" on safaris in Alaska, yes, but mostly.... to Russia.)

Most troubling. She doesn't have a clue. But that doesn't seem to worry her fan club among the fundies.
There are some deep ironies with this whole topic. Bush himself would be unlikely to be able to articulate the reckless foreign policy "doctrine" that bears his name.
Remember that however you define the Bush Doctrine, it's namesake perverted the doctrine (and the law) by constructing fake intelligence in support of pre-emptive military action.
No matter what principles and beliefs you use to guide your foreign policy, Bush has demonstrated that there's nothing that can safeguard against a lying, cheating law breaker in the Oval Office.

I like this ad because as the mother of two young children that interview literally scared the hell out of me. It is 100% on target of how I feel today thinking that this person could be one freakin heart beat away from the Presidency under a President who is 72 and a 4 time cancer survivor. It IS terrifying! How can any American who just pays the tiniest bit of attention not have learned what the Bush Doctrine is - just through osmosis?

To someone with a conservative religious background the word DOCTRINE has primarily a religious meaning. Palin must have thought Charlie was asking a question about Bush's religious beliefs, thus her answer, "His (Christian?) worldview, you mean." Still shows her ignorance.
Keep her in Alaska hunting moose. She's too unprepared and scary for anything else.

The design blue prints for the machine carrying Dr. Guillotine’s name can be found on the web. Then “Sic semper tyrannis” for really reals . . .

Does anyone know how long it would take the 527s to ramp up? That MoveOn.org ad with the concerned mother and her baby was super effective. Where's MoveOn.org? We need them with the quickness!!!

That McCain might actually become the president is as terrifying as thought that Palin could only be a heartbeat away.
He's never seen a war he doesn't like. He was advocating for attacking Iraq as early as Sept. 12, 2001, stated that war with North Korea was inevitable as early as 1994, joked about bombing Iran, has advocated for a more confrontational approach to Russia, and during the primaries promised that there would be "more wars". And there are plenty of supporters on right who think this is for the better, that Bush has been too reluctant to project American power since Iraq went south.
McCain will likely make Bush look thoughtful and judicious by comparison.
