"Lipstick On A Pig" Author Was McCain Flack Who Defended Him Against Gorilla Rape Joke Charge

Oh, the layers upon layers of irony...

The McCain campaign may be decrying Obama's use of the "lipstick on a pig" line, but it turns out that a woman who wrote a book called Lipstick on a Pig actually worked as a flack for none other than McCain.

Even better, that same flack, who worked for McCain on his 1986 Senate race, defended McCain against charges that he'd told a now-infamous joke about a woman who was raped by a gorilla, and enjoyed it.

Torie Clarke, who is better known as a one-time spokesperson for Donald Rumsfeld, published Lipstick on a Pig, a book about political flacking, in 2006.

During McCain's 1986 Senate race, McCain was hit with allegations from women's groups in Arizona that he'd told this knee-slapper (as quoted at the time by the Tucson Citizen)...

"Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, 'Where is that marvelous ape?'"

McCain was defended at the time by none other than the future author of Lipstick on a Pig. Also from the Tucson Citizen in 1986:

McCain press aide Clarke countered, "John does not recollect telling that joke ... And he has a very good record on women's issues."

Clarke said she has never heard Mccain tell the "joke" in three years of listening to "literally thousands" of his speeches.

The reporter for the Citizen at the time recently vouched for the story, telling The Huffington Post that multiple women at the time told her that they'd heard the joke.

this is where 527's could be contributing to the attack mode against the pig and her master, McCon!

I agree. Time to fire up the 527s.

Check it out

Well I haven't read about one person at an Obama event who has asked "how do we beat the bitch"?

If I recall McCain was asked the same thing and just chuckled over it. Later he issued a press release condemning the language.

McCain said: "That's an excellent question"

And AP "reporter" Liz Sidoti edited that part out.

What someone ought be doing is requesting a review of McCain's mental health history and status, interventions or not, and for what.
The man is severly disturbed, and dangerous. The Republic has endured eight years of a man with deep seated severe mental illness, untreated, and doesn't need to be in a position to suffer any more.
In military lingo,,,,,, unfit to serve.

I think it's time to break out that footage of McCain laughing while a woman referred to Hillary as a Bitch.

Pufferfish

Every day not spent talking about the real issues is a good day for McCain.

The media is just not doing its job.

I have seen this report on AP and FoxNews saying that Obama was slandering Palin.

You can't beat that. It does not matter what any democrat blog says, they are all pushing against this.

The Republicans are answering saying that Democrats are "gleeful" "condoning" in calling Palin a Pig.

Obama can't win if part of the media is against him. They are seeking to bring him down or maybe make this race interesting.

This election has become a farce.

The McCain campaign has realized it can lie, lie, lie and part of the media like Halperin or Fox or AP will report their lies as facts.

How do you beat that?

Scary stuff.

he has a very good record on women's issues."

Can someone explain that one to me? I'm not being facetious at all. What has he done for women? He's against SCHIP, he's against reproductive rights, he's against equal pay...what's so great about his record?

I can, Schrodinger's Cat -

It's a lie.

I think you're right. Let's just add it to the list along with all of the other ones.

I'm actually listening to MSNBC in the background while working (and occassionally checking TPM)...

And I'm a little hopeful, because both Nora Donnell and the previous newscaster seem to be adopting a pretty skeptical tone regarding this controversy, and actually seem to be challenging the McCain narrative. In addition, they keep showing the original Obama remark (including his substantive "joke" about how they're change except...everything) and his mature response.

The surrogates look foolish, and the Obama surrogates have been spot-on. Perhaps this is MSNBC which, I will admit has a little more left-leaning tendencies than CNN (FOX not even worth mentioning). However, in the past even MSNBC seemed a little more credulous toward McCain.

McCain may have cried "wolf" one too many times, perhaps the female anchors are turned-off by the wilting-flower blatantness of the argument, perhaps the Palin sequestering is pissing them off, or perhaps Obama's response shamed them. I don't know. But I feel Obama is getting the best of this one.

Bad news: covering this crap. Good news: pushback seems to be getting some traction and backfiring.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Rep. Ron Paul, the libertarian-leaning Texas lawmaker who attracted a devoted following in the GOP primaries, said Wednesday he rejected an appeal to endorse John McCain's presidential bid. Paul said the request came from Phil Gramm, the former McCain adviser and ex-senator whom the campaign jettisoned after he said the country was a "nation of whiners" about the economy. Gramm defeated Paul in the Republican primary for the Senate in 1984.

Ok, somebody tell me that this isn't good news.

Give Lalo a minute to collect his/her thoughts...

P.S. also, a narrative seems to be bubbling on that same network (MSNBC) of "Obama wants to talk about education, the record and issues but is trying to be distracted".

Correction:

*"...trying NOT to be distracted"

From the front page of Talking Points Memo. The reader captures my deep frustration at this point:

My question... where the hell are the Democrats on this? Not just here, but nationally, they are letting Obama get bloodied over this. Where is Biden? Is he turning into this cycle's Edwards? Where are Pelosi and Boxer and Sebelius today?

Dems to Republicans = Charlie Brown to Lucy.

Tired and fed up with this crap.

And I recall being deeply frustrated when everyone including me thought Hillary was going to win the primary.

And all the frustration? It was a waste of energy.

Joseph Welsh, the counsel for the U.S. Army asked Commie witchhunter Joe McCarthy. "Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?" Had old Joe Welsh been around to ask that question of John McCain, the answer would have to be "Nope."

I seem to remember Torie Clark being on The Daily Show a couple of years ago. I don't have access to comedycentral.com at work, but someone might want to check out that episode - my guess is that she was hawking this book.

I think Obama should carry that book around with him and wave it high in the air, so every camera can catch it.

Can't wait to see quotes from it posted in the blogosphere.

I'm actually taking a bit of joy in all of the hoopla surrounding this "pig" comment fiasco. It reminds me of that week when Obama gave his historic speech on race. Perhaps he will give another one soon on the state of politics as they are today and really hit home on what the GOP are trying to do.

Of course, the flip-side of this, Palin might use this whole thing as a soapbox to talk about gender.

Update: admit to taking my lunch hour to obsess. Even that douche Rick Sanchez (who I'm sorry to say was launched from my former hometown of Miami) on CNN...

Got who I think is the McCain supporter in the PUMA ad (def. an anti-Obama person) to say she doesn't think Barack was being sexist and that "McCain is being stupid".

(Of course, she then accused Obama of playing the race card in general so he's "guilty" too -- but baby-steps).

Then, halleluiah. When asked by Sanchez who loses when we focus on these distractions, what did BOTH panelists say? "The American People".

Hm. Sounds a lot like something Obama said today. So perhaps the meme took.

There are obviously a couple of things going on here but let's not lose sight of the end game.

By sending out this torrent of mud and slime and lies every day they keep Obama on the defensive. The object of this is not to persuade anybody to vote for or against anyone, there are lots of reasons to do that already for whichever way someone leans.

The object of this torrent of mud is to discourage occasional or first-time voters period. By turning the election into a slimefest it confirms that it is politics as usual and nothing will happen.

So while you have to counter the slime you still have to stay on the main message of change with specifics. Optimism is the primary motivator, dispel fear with strength. The most successful administrations combined optimism with strength.

Obama started to get the initive back and they immediatly slimed him to turn it around. Keep at it, major speech on priority issues twice a week until the election. That is a test for any campaign because it not only shows that they can drive the agenda, it show they can govern.

No one is paying any attention to Texas this election just like always, so no one really is thinking about this, I guess - Ron Paul is really a hot property in Texas. He could conceivable split the Repug vote there to the point where if turnout is anything like it was during the primary, Obama could walk off with Texas.

And I'm not being overly optimistic here. The Libertarians already have a hold on Texas and on Colorado - they are big in both states. If you believe that Nader helped us lose in 2000, then you need to keep Ron Paul and Barr both in mind. They could turn out to be really key factors in some states.

Is he on the ballot there?

He's trying to pull votes away from Obama and towards whatever third party candidate is running.

Everyone can recall this McCain joke: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." He told it at a Republican fundraiser. He apologized in writing to then President Clinton. He never apologized to Hillary, Chelsea, or Janet Reno.

Shocking! You mean the guy who thought "how do we beat the bitch" was an "excellent question" told a rape joke?

Update on the update: Huckabee and Meghan McCain do not approve this message. Difficult to spin your own daughter not buying your B.S.

Actually McInsane issused non-appoligy appoligies through intermediaries for his Clinton kid joke. He can point to those to disspell his crime by casting the teller as the offender.

Yes, McInsane is a jack_hole but we must watch out calling his sorry (pasty white) backside on crap he did not do. We become like him if we lie about his inability to have empathy with humans or speak truth in any form. Pointing out his crimes requires no embellishment.

Forget about the nmedia.
Give 10 million to five 527s.
Tell them not to come back without a body count.
Then be as bad winners as possible,

I disagree. I don't want Obama to become McCain 2.0. How would our country be served by a vile, filthy, corrupt Democrat, exactly? That's a good way to lose the long-term battle for America.

If you become the devil to beat the devil, the devil wins. Its that thinking that has led us to a "gotta join 'em to beat 'em" mentality that has made the War on Terrorism become a moral clusterf*.

And the tolerance for these campaign hijinks may be wearing out. I'm really seeing today's frame becoming "how does Obama fight back against these relentless dirty attacks?" in the MSM, and I've been flipping around.

McCain press aide Clarke countered, "John does not recollect telling that joke."

Qualified denial, eh? Like he doesn't remember what he had for supper Friday night.

Let me tell you, John McCain is a sleazy, wretched little old man with a degenerate mind. Just look at the Ad he also came out with today lying about Obama wanting to teach sex ed to kindergarten kids as well as talking about this foolishness about lipstick. First of all Sarah Palin called compared herself to a dog in lipstick. Mind you a vicious attack dog. All their supporters cheered and laughed. They were happy to see an attack dog come to the rescue of John McCain, the village idiot. Actually, he is either an idiot or very evil. I really don't know which. Whatever the case may be, I believe John McCain's mind is in the gutter otherwise he would not have approved those wicked ads. This little old man is a shame and disgrace to all intelligent Republican party members. John McCain and his campaign team, are reprobates of the highest order. He will do anything to win this election, including selling his soul to the devil; what a shame.
