The Terrible Two: Romney And Huckabee Highlights
A few quick highlights from the speeches given by Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee:
* Romney, clearly still in the grip of the idea that Palin could still be dumped and make way for him to step into the Veep slot, rolled out a well-trafficked GOP fib, saying that Dems never mentioned radical Jihad during the convention. In fact, Obama referred to terrorism and Osama at least five times during his speech alone.
* Romney, former guv of Massachusetts, bashed eastern elites.
* Romney claimed that we need change from the "liberal" Washington where Bush has been president for eight years and the GOP ran Congress until two years ago.
* Huckabee, in a crowd-pleaser, said Sarah Palin got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla than Joe Biden did for president. This gag strikes us as ill-advised, because it draws attention to the fact that Palin got all of 616 votes in her quest for a mayoralty that GOPers are touting as proof of her preparedness to be commander-in-chief.
* Huckabee falsely suggested Abraham Lincoln founded GOP.
All this, and Rudy hasn't even spoken yet!

Romney's speech was like dirty talk during sex with Republican base.

With the pitbulls out in the running pen tearing apart some raw steak. It was disgusting and Romney was sickening.

I said many months ago that Mike Huckabee would be the Democrats nightmare -- I continue to feel that way and I'm betting after tonight's speech made by Huckabee (leaving off any errors) -- Republicans are wishing they had VOTED FOR HIM instead of John McCain.
I'm SO glad they did not!

He's a snake oil salesman, and in this political environment, the only way a repub could win the white house.

Didn't see his speech, but I would have been deeply worried about Huckabee as well. That down home folksiness that's so attractive to people, coupled with his genuine sense of humor would have masked his disturbing fundamentalist positions.

Agreed. Huckabee's speech was the only genuine moment so far. In many ways he sounded like a "feel your pain" democrat. Moving.
Mittens sounded like the fake, vacuous suck up he is. Not impressed.

So... will Rudy publically start masturbating over pictures of the post-9/11 WTC pictures on national television? I think that's the question on all our minds.

These hacks just anger me. This convention night has been abysmal. You will get the nutjobs that can't think without the Republicans leaders giving them their talking point via fox, but that is about it.

Bingo. The real people are looking for answers in this election cycle, and all they got was crap. Huckabee: McCain has ideas about how to help you but I'm just going to say the word freedom and get the crowd into a frenzy (or what passes for frenzy in this snooze crowd.)

Too bad Rudy hadn't heard of it.
Personally, I think touting the mayor experience will backfire for Palin. To most people, mayoral experience does not mean experience to run as Veep. And when the mayoral experience is that gained in a town of 6000 residents, the stretch is even further.

Mike Huckabee is LIKABLE -- I'm not talking about his political views -- his ability to speak and connect to voters.
He hit it out of the park a couple of times tonight -- I have to see transcript to remember which ones I'm talking about.

I think this very rightwing GOP convention is a great way to turn off the middle. It will certainly scare independents and liberals away from the new ultra-rightwing ticket.

We've really entered another dimension. Up is down. Black is white. And the GOP is the party that's been in the wilderness for the past eight years. Oh, and Rudy is a Dbag.
