The Palin Bio Video That Rudy's Megalomania Prevented America From Seeing

Here it is: The bio video of Sarah Palin that was supposed to air at the Republican convention last night before her speech.

You should watch it. The video, which was leaked (surprisingly) to Fox News, gives us a glimpse into how the Republicans were planning to sell a soft-focus version of Palin's life as a soft-peddled intro into the harsh, partisan, and undeniably successful speech that followed:

So why didn't America get to see this last night? We speculated here yesterday that Rudy, who spoke just before Palin's speech, ran long, forcing the convention planners to nix the video (and another intervening speaker) to get Palin onto the stage in time.

We went back and checked the GOP convention schedule. Rudy was supposed to start speaking at 10 P.M., followed by another speaker, followed by the video, and followed Palin's speech. All that was supposed to be wrapped up by 11 P.M.

Rudy actually started speaking at 10:01, right on time. He kept talking all the way until 10:28. Palin came out a few minutes later, and ran past 11 P.M.

Bottom line: If Rudy had clammed up and gotten off the stage, they could have run the video.

To be clear, no Republicans I spoke to are upset about the vid not running; they're thrilled with how things went. But it seems clear to us that last night would have been more successful with the video: The bio intro would have taken the edge off the speech.

Rudy!

Late Update: We were right! Jonathan Martin confirms with a top convention planner that Rudy ran much longer than expected, forcing the nixing of the vid.

Sorry, they had their chance to show this last night. I'm not going to help them out by viewing it now.

The BEST part of the night was Rudy stepping on her video. I was doing picture-and-picture and flipping back and forth between the speeches (because I couldn't bear to listen to Rudy) and the US Open. I thought I missed the video, and then I found out he crowded it out. What a guy! It would have been even better if he somehow snuck in a vid of him and Judy!

user-pic

Yeah, totally hilarious. That's what they get for bumping him from his earlier featured role, I guess.

Video makes all the difference. Now she's just going to be known for giving a really mean speech.

I buy the theory that they omitted the video because Rudy ran long. These speeches are carefully stage-managed, and Rudy's address didn't have the obvious off-the-cuff quality that Brian Schweitzer's did last week.

I suspect the GOP decided to nix it. "Mother. Moose Hunter. Maverick." What would Jon Stewart have done with that?

More importantly, telling Palin's life story--even in soft focus--reinforces how utterly unqualified she is to hold national office.

Sorry, that should be I don't buy the theory.

I keep feeling sorry for the fucking moose! Anyone who's ever seen one in the wild knows how awesome a moose is. The thought of this Hooters waitress blowing one away so she can feed her wretched little tribe of hillbillies infuriates me.

user-pic

"More importantly, telling Palin's life story--even in soft focus--reinforces how utterly unqualified she is to hold national office."
Why? Because she hasn't written 2 books about herself? That's all Obama has on her in the way of "experience."

You look like an idiot. Obama's first executive position was as editor-in-chief of the Harvard Law Review. He oversaw 80 editors who in turn oversaw a host of legal contributors producing what is unquestionably one of the cornerstones of American jurisprudence.

Since being President involves EXECUTING the laws of the United States; an in-depth knowledge of how that system works and the history and interpretation of the constitution (which the President is sworn to uphold) is as important as the organizational prowess and efficiency of execution Obama showed in that position.

And I should note: during that time, Sarah Palin had achieved 2nd place in a beauty pagent and an average degree from our local university (believe me, NOBODY who earned a scholarship to Harvard would say "nope, think I'll stick with 'ole Idaho state!").

You folks have turned yourselves into comedians. I used to support McCain back in 2000. Now he's just a joke.

Jesus and Martin Luther King Jr. were community organizers

user-pic

I wish I could give you a rec!

user-pic

...no, Jesus and MLK were leaders...there's a difference.

Yes, well, Barack Obama was a community organizer whose leadership skills helped elevate him to his current position.

Obama is about to lead America out of the doldrums, big fella. So why not climb off that busted up P.O.S. Straight Talk Express and hop on board the O Train?

One can't be both?

Given the fact that by your and other Repub's enthusiastic embracing of Palin and her executive experience, nah, leadership. Shouldn't she be the head of the ticket? I mean if you take your and other's argument to it's logical conclusion, McCain isn't a leader either....

user-pic

“Community organizers work in neighborhoods that have been hit hardest by the failing economy,” said John Raskin, founder of Community Organizers of America and a community organizer on the West Side of Manhattan.

Organized community groups self interest from government, corporations and institutions as well as increased direct representation within decision-making bodies and social reform. Where negotiations fail, these organizations seek to inform others outside of the organization of the issues being addressed and expose or pressure the decision-makers through a variety of means, including picketing, boycotting, sit-ins, petitioning, and electoral politics. When these methods fail, it may lead to negative and violent means by people who are greatly affected with non-decisions or setbacks. Thankfully, community organizers advocate a non-violence approach in today's standards.

Community organizing is usually focused on more than just resolving specific issues. Organizing seeks to make the participants that they are empowering all community members, often with the end goal of distributing power equally throughout the community. However, any influence that may be achieved may in fact only empower the leaders of the "community Organizer."

Community organizers generally seek to build groups that are democratic in governance, open and accessible to community members, and concerned with the general health of the community rather than a specific interest group.

...oh, that clears it up...

Got a link to a wikipedia entry for VP? Probably should forward it to Palin so she can learn what the "VP does all day."

user-pic

She doesn't need it. She's as close as she'll ever be to being Vice President right now. Caribou Barbie fires up the base, and that's great, but she is a turnoff to independent voters.

Obama is about to lead America out of the doldrums, big fella. So why not climb off that busted up P.O.S. Straight Talk Express and hop on board the O Train?

Lame

user-pic

'Undeniably successful?'

Remains to be seen, doesn't it, Greg?

I know. Greg, what gives? Success as measured by what?

With these kinds of comments, you're losing me.

user-pic

Second this--Greg, could you elaborate on what you thought was "undeniably successful" about that speech?

I'm not disagreeing (yet)--I'm just curious.

My sentiments exactly. Why ape the MSM meme that her speech was a smashing success? There's a lot of evidence to the contrary, Greg. Come on.

I will go on record and deny it.

Oh. My. God. This is horrible. Mother, moosehunter?
She puts city, state and country first, no matter what the consequences? No shit. She'll shake the money tree for earmarks and lie through her teeth about it, no matter what the consequences.

She may not be 6 feet tall but she's a giant? That was the hokiest video I've ever seen.

I will say she's one of the few women who looks better in her 40s than in her teens and twenties.

Holy crap...the world shook and trembled when she join the ticket to become a pair of mavericks...music on this video sucks...the message is full of weak not vetted claims...when one puts one on the pedestal...it a long way down when you fall off!

I think they brought Charlton Heston back from the dead to narrate it.

Breaking news. Her maiden name is Sarah Polabeara. She's actually an Italian.

That was a joke, right?

That's awful. Couldn't get past the first 10 seconds - mother, moosehunter, maverick? Are you messing with me? This is a spoof, right?

'Undeniably successful'? To the 45 percent of the country that will vote for these two? I'll take that.

Jesus Christ, that music is awful

Maybe they wanted the speech to be pure bulldog or perhaps there was some biographical tidbit that could come back to haunt them.

Last night, MSNBC said that, normally there is a pause between speeches, but the RNC revised the schedule so that there would be no interruption between Rudy and Palin. They wondered if they set it up that way so that commentators wouldn't have time to do an analysis. they didn't say anything about the video.

user-pic

So, maverick. A major mavericky maverick. Got it. Marvelously mavericky. Maverick. Mavericky mavericksonism.

Subtle, but I think they're going for a maverick theme.

user-pic

noun, verb, maverickly POW!

C'mon - It's a perfectly Cromulent theme to run on ;)

Perfectly acceptable up to a point. At this stage it's getting shop worn.

They'll probably show it tonight.

With the NFL season kicking off tonight, it will be interesting to see the ratings. The game should be over by 10pm, so McCain should get viewers (unless there is a post game), however the rest of the night could hurt for viewers.

noun, verb, mavericky, sexist POW.

By far the worst of the biopics produced thus far. The GOP better hope whatever video they roll out for McCain tonight is much, much better. I'm frankly a little disappointed they didn't get to show this -- though I agree it's wonderful that Rudy's ego was what kept it off screen!

They only had four days to put it together, and not a lot of footage. I bet Pawlenty and Romney had pretty kickass ones ready.

Just watched the whole thing! OMG! Disturbing and disgusting. "When she joined the ticket, the world trembled..." Sick.

The world trembled alright...

Retched.

Something trembled alright, but it wasn't the world.

user-pic

...you too?!?

user-pic

...you too?

user-pic

...you too?

Fox aired this in full to make sure everyone saw it.

Mom just wrote (eye roll) telling me Palin had more experience than Obama, so Fox is doing their work well, as that is all she watches.

user-pic

...you've got an intelligent Mom. Kudos to her.

user-pic

It's basically a slide show with as many lame GOP base phrases spoken on top of it. It might have softened her up a little before the speech but probably not much outside of the GOP evangelical base!

Okay, I watched 15 seconds and had to stop. What is with the church music in the background and Moose Hunter, like that will endear her to me??? WTF ?!

I'd rather have a moose for vp than this hunk of trailer trash.

I got through "Mother. Moose hunter. Maverick." and then had to run down the hall to kneel before the porcelain god.

LOL Alex!

user-pic

I couldn't even make it down the hall, and had to clean up my laptop (and shirt, and lap).

It will be interesting to see what the ratings will be for their convention compared to last week's event in Denver.

I of course won't watch any of the rep convention - there's football (Tonight is Redskins at Giants), US Open Tennis (Roddick tonight) Will NBC cut off the Giants - Redskins game for mcsenile???

Geez, I hope Stewart and Colbert got a hold of this in time for tonight's shows.

I was thinking the same thing about his speech happening right after the NFL season opener. Even if they don't overlap at all, I think people will have a little bit of 'event fatigue', where they just got done watching a 3 1/2 hour game and might not be ready to pay attention to something else yet. And certainly the lead-in speakers and bio video stuff will get missed.

Why? Because she hasn't written 2 books about herself? That's all Obama has on her in the way of "experience."

Because last we checked, "Mother and Moosehunter" were not qualifications for the office of VP.

Although, given how little respect the Republicans have for the U.S. Constitution, I wouldn't be surprised to see an amendment introduced soon.

Anybody old enough to remember the Heidi Bowl? That was on NBC, too. No way they pull away from a game that 90% of the pundits at the convention would rather be watching.

user-pic

Exactly! Hmm...Roddick at the Open or McSame in MN - easy choice.

Venus & Serena had a great match yesterday, more class and maverickyness in those two ladies than Palin & Ailin McCain.

Okay, I've got it. This thing was so bad, they asked Rudy to run long and take one for the team (megalomania blame).

Then they could show it to the faithful on FOX, not the 37 million (so says Nora O'Donnell) who would have puked and turned off the TV if they saw this tripe last night.

user-pic

OT: Obama just responded to the Big Speech (paraphrased):

"Why aren't you responding more to Palin?"

OBAMA: Because I'm campaigning against John McCain

Reaction to comments about his experience as a community organizer:

OBAMA: How can they think that is not relevant? Who are THEY fighting for if they think fighting for workers in the community is not important?

Regarding the scrutiny Palin has received

OBAMA: This is nothing new. I expect that she wants to receive the same scrutiny as any male candidate, which includes questioning experience. I've been going through this for 19 months, she's been going through it for 4 days.

---

Laughed off Palin's slams, saying he'd been called worse on the basketball court.

Damn it, he's good.

So, when you google Sarah Palin you get pages of her positive, white-washed record. How do we get aspects of her real record on the main return page?

Hey, there you are!

So I assume you're finished with our little sexism discussion in the Election Central Morning Roundup thread?

Here, let me recap for you and we can continue it here:

SFC
...no asking if she'll be able to give enough attention to the job with 5 kids is sexist. Bill Clinton had enogh time to get a few blow jobs in between breifings, I'm sure she'll be able to squeeze in a diaper change if necessary.

HyperRevue
Was it also sexist when the same questions were asked of John Edwards??

SFC
They weren't, or of Biden...they were heros for "soldiering on" through tough times.

HyperRevue
Hardly.

http://www.ajc.com/opinion/content/opinion/bookman/

"Rush Limbaugh said the Edwardses were turning their eyes to the campaign when they instead should turn their eyes to God."

"Katie Couric, in a “60 Minutes” interview, accused Edwards of mining his wife’s condition for sympathy votes: 'Even those who may be very empathetic to what you all are facing might question your ability to run the country at the same time you’re dealing with a major health crisis in your family,' Couric told Edwards."

"And in Time magazine, columnist Jay Carney wrote that “surely many average Americans have to be wondering at what point the candidate will decide that his duties as husband and father to three children, including a 6- and 8-year-old, trump his duty to his country and the cause of winning the White House.”

Just watched one minute and 45 seconds of it. Excruciating. Pure torture.

No wonder they didn't run it.

user-pic

Well, now I know I don't have to watch it and thank the goddesses I don't.

LOL!

By 10:26 I was convinced Rudy was attempting a filibuster!

By the way, did anyone notice the choice of song following Mitt Romney? I don't know who's choosing these things but here's the chorus:

If you're going through Hell
Keep on going,
don't slow down,
If you're scared, don't show it

Freudian slip?

user-pic

Quibble with the headline -- isn't it egomania rather than megalomania? After all, he was putting himself before everyone else, even his own party, not trying to take over the world.

Wait a second...that music...It's the DALLAS THEME SONG!

That is so sick! Knowing what we all know now, it is so full of lies. They now have her handwriting on a list of earmarks she and her lobbyist got from the feds. And she says to the council how great they did. Hates earmarks, huh? Some reformer. Just another Repub politician.

Am I the only one who thinks that this sounds like the theme song from Dallas?

Hey, go easy on Buffy the Moose Slayer.

I heard a moose once bit her sister...

user-pic

Did anyone count how many times the narrator said maverick?
The stock music was too loud. It sounded like a hymn and the chorus sounded like a sample on a synthesizer.

user-pic

pure kitsch. Like an animated Kinkade painting

He screwed up the plans of his whole party for a little more limelight...

Yeah, that's Rudy.

The McCain bunch seem to be very keen to portray themselves as mavericks. Has anybody looked up the definition? My Oxford english dictionary says "unorthodox or undisciplined person" , originally a "person who owned unbranded cattle" - i.e. a lawbreaker. So maybe these characteristics do fit McCain and Palin, I can't say. But who would actually choose their presidential team because they are undisciplined and law-breaking?

Good point.

It's being shown tonight according to the schedule released.

user-pic

I just read that the bio vid has been panned by the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Audiences)

OH, I should have added...

I kept expecting him to take a call while on stage, because that joke was always HI-larious.

user-pic

I just read that the bio vid has been panned by the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Audiences)

Rudy has the weirdest body ever. I can't imagine how he looks under that suit.

user-pic

They're showing it tonight.
I'm throwing up a little in my mouth.

Oooh there it comes....

user-pic

Am I the only one who's never been
able to figure out why

"Hollywood = very, VERY bad!!"

but

"Being led by ACTORS from Hollywood =
very very GOOD??"

I mean, how do you constantly use "Hollywood"
as an epithet, when the Dems never elect the
Penns or Sarandons, but Repubs want us led by
the Reagans, Schwarzeneggers, Sonny Bonos,
and "Gopher" from Love Boat?

Shook the world? Seriously?!

I must have missed it, 'cause I didn't feel a thing.
