The Palin Meltdown in Slo-Mo
On the same day that the Republicans were forced to dramatically cut back their convention activities, the Palin Meltdown unfolded with extraordinary speed. It's worth pondering the totality of what happened today, in a mere half day...
* The news that Palin once backed the Bridge to Nowhere went national.
* It emerged that Palin has links to the bizarro Alaska Independence Party, which harbors the goal of seceding from the union that McCain and Palin seek to lead.
* The news broke that as governor, Palin relied on an earmark system she now opposes. Taken along with the Bridge to Nowhere stuff, this threatens to undercut her reformist image, something that was key to her selection as McCain's Veep candidate.
* The news broke that Palin's 17-year-old daughter became pregnant out of wedlock at a time when the conservative base had finally started rallying behind McCain's candidacy.
* Barely moments after McCain advisers put out word that McCain had known of Bristol Palin's pregnancy, the Anchorage Daily News revealed that Palin's own spokesperson hadn't known about it only two days ago.
* A senior McCain adviser at the Republican convention was forced into the rather embarrassing position of arguing that McCain had known about the pregnancy "last week" -- without saying what day last week he knew about it.
* It came out that Republican lawyers are up in Alaska vetting Palin -- now, more than 72 hours after it was announced that she'd been picked.
* Palin lawyered up in relation to the trooper-gate probe in Alaska -- a move that ensures far more serious attention to the story from the major news orgs.
What else will come out today? After all, there are still six hours left until September 2nd...

This is amazing.

Well, her legal liaison was fired for dating the ex-wife of a friend(I think her husband made the call).
There's also a (decently documented) pending complaint for placing one of her husband's friends in a "protected position" with the transportation department - which apparently is also considered an abuse of office.
IMO, the next thing is people notice Todd Palin was materially involved with every decision for which there is a public record. When people start digging into him, that's when the real dirt is going to come out.
My question: is there enough time between now and the election to even DOCUMENT all that's wrong with Palin?

Be interesting to see where she stands on intrade tomorrow.
Remember, it will be impossible to dump her once she's nominated and accepted. That means they have what, 3 days at the most to sort this out?

I think that's true. But they can still pressure her to "voluntarily" resign.
Hmmm. Thinking about her and what I've learned about her recently, it's not clear that she would cave to such pressure.

Why ten GOP lawyers being dispatched today? Simple. If there is one more negative story out there about her, she is toast before Wednesday and Romney or perhaps Pawlenty or Jindal accepts the nomination for VP. They have probably told her they will go the mat for her if it stops at what is known right now, but another embarrassment and her offer is withdrawn.
If she has to be yanked after the convention, they know they will lose.

Perhaps there may be a vicious floor fight if level of shat gets deep enough for the rest of the party to go for the jugular. This will be fun to watch cause it'll mean the repug$ will be completely off-message during their convention.

The thing about the "earmark system" doesn't seem very interesting to me. Didn't Palin just do what any city mayor or state official would be expected by her constituents to do? That is, fight like heck for any penny of federal funding they can get their hands on?
September 1, 2008 6:26 PM | Reply | Permalink
That is certainly what she did. The point is more that it contradicts the image that the campaign is trying to create of maverick reformer.
September 1, 2008 6:34 PM | Reply | Permalink
And, she went there in her first speech with McCain, she opened those gates.
September 1, 2008 6:39 PM | Reply | Permalink
In addition, Senator McCain is vehemently against earmarks. Of any kind. He boasts that he has never accepted an earmark for his constituents in Arizona and castigated Senator Obama for doing it.
Personally, I don't have a big problem with earmarks. That's part of the job of the politician - to help their constituents. But Senator McCain has made such a big deal about them that it's kind of embarassing that his running mate is so successful at getting earmarks for her state.

Although here most recent comments in 08 were the thanks but no thanks for the Bridge, in early 2007 and I think to late in the year, up until Stevens got in trouble, she is on tape for absolutely supporting the bridge... That isn't even the half of it, obchris! Although during Friday's nomination announcement she said, "I told the US Senate, 'Thanks, but no thanks for that bridge to nowhere." If Alaska needs a bridge, we'll build it ourselves'," while McCain beamed and the gullible Republican crowd cheered, in fact, Palin kept the earmark money from the Feds! That just sorta undermines McCain's argument for her mavericky-ness, doesn't it?
And, it was only when it became abundantly clear that the project wasn't going to fly that she started making the fervent anti-earmark noises about it. (Cue Moose.)
Sarah Palin...thoroughly vetted? Not a chance.
Poor McCain, caught between a rock and a hard place now - no matter what he does it's only going to highlight her unsuitability for the office she seeks, and his unsuitability for President for making this unvetted, desperate last-minute choice, under pressure from the right wing of the party.

Talk about skeletons in the Palin family closet!
They are just starting to tumble out.
When we last discussed the Palin pregnant teen daughter rumor, we said that we did not find any conclusive evidence that Sarah Palin was claiming her fifth child to be her own when it was actually her teen daughter's, who had been sort of missing from school for several months. We said our primary concern was with the judgment of the Palins in leaving Texas after the forty year old and then some Sarah Palin knew her bag of water had broken. Indeed, she went on to give a speech and then fly 8 hours home with her husband, an action -- at her age, while carrying a pre-diagnosed child with down's syndrome -- that was reckless and life endangering. (She even by-passed hospitals in Anchorage to drive to a clinic in her hometown to deliver shortly thereafter. A high-risk decision.)
And we focused on the point that such dangerous decision-making was a bad sign for the person who would be the next in line to be president when the presidential candidate whom she is running with would be the oldest elected occupant of the Oval Office in history and has a history himself of recurring skin cancer.
The title of our alert the other day was, "Did Sarah Palin Endanger the Life of Her Fifth Child? Or is the Swirling Rumor True?" (It got 112 reader comments. You should read them.)
Okay, now it is fittingly Labor Day (if you catch the double entendre) and the McCain-Palin campaign released a doozy of a news release. No, the rumors that Sarah Palin was pretending to cover up for her "no sex before marriage Christian fundamentalist" family credo by pretending to be the mother of her daughter's daughter weren't true, just scurrilous slanders on the family and daughter.
What is true is even more bizzarre. The McCain-Palin campaign are expressing disdain at all this "slander," so they revealed the Christian truth: Sarah Palin Says That There is No Truth to Her Teen Daughter Being Pregnant Out of Wedlock Last Year Because the Daughter in Question is Pregnant and Unmarried This Year.
We thought that McCain appointed a vice presidential candidate to appeal to the religious right, but now we find that we've just entered into the middle of another hypocritical fundamentalist soap opera, only of the moose shooting family lifestyle kind. (McCain, according to CNN, knew of the unwed teen pregnancy in advance of his last-minute rushed choice of Palin. But watch for this "emerging" story to take a few more twists before it's put to bed, so to speak.)
There's not a lot of outdoor or indoor movie theaters up there in Alaska, so it's probably not surprising that young people turn to sex, which they do everywhere anyway.
But when you got a fundamentalist hot mama preaching the gospel and abstinence -- and who seems to have had a shot gun wedding of her own -- you know why McCain might regard Palin as his spritual soulmate (besides the fact that he can't seem to stop nervously staring at her breasts -- just watch the You-Tube of his announcing her as VP candidate).
It's because we are going to have four more years of stuff-it-down your throat moral hypocrisy if these two are elected, not to mention a president who is made for the 18th Century and a Vice President who is apparently a supporter of the Alaskan Seccessionist Party. Not too mention that we will be saddled with the brainless Republican thinking that believes you shoot down rumors of your unwed teen daughter having been pregnant by revealing that she is pregnant now and still unwed.
Do you remember the song "Harper Valley PTA"? Well that's who we've got running on the Republican ticket:
I want to tell you all a story 'bout a Harper Valley widowed wife Who had a teenage daughter who attended Harper Valley Junior High Well her daughter came home one afternoon and didn't even stop to play She said, "Mom, I got a note here from the Harper Valley P.T.A."
The note said, "Mrs. Johnson, you're wearing your dresses way too high It's reported you've been drinking and a-runnin' 'round with men and going wild And we don't believe you ought to be bringing up your little girl this way" It was signed by the secretary, Harper Valley P.T.A.
Well, it happened that the P.T.A. was gonna meet that very afternoon They were sure surprised when Mrs. Johnson wore her mini-skirt into the room And as she walked up to the blackboard, I still recall the words she had to say She said, "I'd like to address this meeting of the Harper Valley P.T.A."
Well, there's Bobby Taylor sittin' there and seven times he's asked me for a date Mrs. Taylor sure seems to use a lot of ice whenever he's away And Mr. Baker, can you tell us why your secretary had to leave this town? And shouldn't widow Jones be told to keep her window shades all pulled completely down?
Well, Mr. Harper couldn't be here 'cause he stayed too long at Kelly's Bar again And if you smell Shirley Thompson's breath, you'll find she's had a little nip of gin Then you have the nerve to tell me you think that as a mother I'm not fit Well, this is just a little Peyton Place and you're all Harper Valley hypocrites.
Okay, one thing that we can be sure of is that this seedy side story to the Palin announcement is far from over. The McCain campaign appointed her in such a hurry, they hardly vetted anything beyond her photograph.
So as more spills out, when will America wake up and realize that we deserve good sound judgment and good policy decisions, not the Republican ticket version of the "Harper Valley PTA"?

Even when I left Anchorage in '94 there were plenty of movie theaters up in that area. The adolescents do have all the raging hormones of that age anywhere. The Palin's kids had abstinence sex ed, unlikely any discussion of how to handle the hormones, etc.
IMO The Nation has the identified the power and reason behind this pick. I became a Dukakis Democrat in '88 because of an attempt to register with the GOP in AK. The right right wing religious nuts have been firmly in control of that party far longer than than '88. They are ideological followers of Weyrich, Vigourie, Reed and others who sincerely plan to rewrite the US Constitution to make the country a Christian nation.

"During his time as a POW, John McCain learned to judge a person's character based on nothing more than their Morse code tapping through the walls. To suggest that he made snap decision without any actual information because he had a panic attack after watching Obama's acceptance speech is a slur on his record of service to this country and we will not tolorate it."

She'll be allowed to withdraw from the race due to "family considerations," which in this case appears eminently defensible from her point of view.
What isn't defensible is McCain's rash, panicked judgment in this case. What does it say about a candidate that their first truly important decision was a colossal failure?
September 1, 2008 6:55 PM | Reply | Permalink
I'm not so sure it was a rash pick now. It's obvious to the most casual of observers that the conservatives and christies were withholding their endorsements until McShame picked a VP to their liking. Hence, Palin. Wouldn't it be funny if McShame really did vet her, knew she was a bag of shat, but selected her and let the dirty laundry come out on its own? That would definitely put the hard right wingers in their place. I wouldn't be surprised by the time the repug convention is over, Palin will be out the door and McShame will have his VP nominee.

This is so good, but I wish things came more slowly. Then again, it only makes sense since neither the McCain campaign nor the media did any vetting of her.
I don't see what can be done. Could he really switch VPs?
A week ago, I was confident that he'd pick Pawlenty. In the back of my mind, though, I had a worry: what if he chooses a woman? Game changer.
But Palin was the first person I removed from my list. My fear was centered around Olympia Snowe or someone similar. I think that choice would have made McCain favored, even.
But somehow even I, a queer secularist, underestimated how in thrall McCain is to the fundamentalist ideologues in his Party. I have no fucking clue what's going on anymore.

There are sub-texts here that supercede the flaming headlines. The ties to Ted Stevens is one. Troopergate is a ticking time bomb.
But you touch on what I believe is the most draconian, evil parts of our governing system, the last cancerous hold-out from the Dark Ages before the Internet.
For how else could it be, that in the year 2008, Americas Mullahs saw fit, in secret, to name a second to such a high office, and the only vetting was a wave of an imperious hand.
THIS is the real story, and it MUST come out. It speaks to the whole corrupt concept of GOP politics in the age of the neocons.

Very, Very Good point. But I think there was something that blew-up last minute with the number one pick.

Very plausible. Could it have happened after they saw Obama's speech and all of them crapped in their pants? (The timing of the call to Palin might be evidence against that, but I'm too lazy to look it up.)
In any event, McDottard boxed himself in by trying to cut the timing too close. If his choice had been made earlier, it might have leaked out during the Dem convention and ruined his post-convention bounce-limiter. And it couldn't have been made any later 'cuz the Rep convention was looming.
His continued reluctance to let go of LieberSchmuck also didn't help.
Definite signs of desperation and now panic. As is said, too clever by half.

The thing about Olympia Snowe, you can imagine her being chosen over Romney and Pawlenty even subtracting the female factor. A ridiculously popular Republican politician? Yes, and she regularly approaches the inflated 90% approval claimed of Palin by Republican operatives (it's in the mid-60s now--something desireable, but Snowe manages it in a deep blue state, while Palin does in a red one).
Armed services committee for over a decade. Very hawkish. Clean as a whistle--she'd make McCain's reform thing plausible and maybe even true. Professional. Justly known as a very intelligent person untainted by the tawdriness of modern Republicanism. Even the current Democratic candidate for Senate running against Susan Collins in Maine says stuff like "she's no Olympia Snowe."
Snowe could easily make Maine and New Hampshire a lock for McCain, and she'd put pressure on Obama in PA, NY, NJ, OR, and WA (and maybe AK). It seems a no brainer. And none of that even includes the historic woman factor.
But there was that teeny, tiny issue of supporting Roe v. Wade. Knocked her right off the list in a second, despite her decades of experience and manifest qualities of leadership.

You are probably right about the last minute blow-up. At first he was gonna name his Veep earlier, then not, then pushed back some more..? I may be wrong but it sure seemed slap-dash last week.

But Snowe is pro-choice and in favor of gay rights, not to mention that she is not rabid on the subject of the death penalty or gun rights. Choosing Snowe would have given the fundies a reason to stay home on election day.
That would be McCain's problem with just about any strong choice of woman in the Republican party. Those that are not either too old (Dole) or under a cloud of suspicion (Murkowski) are pro-choice.

If McPOW really wanted to bring in evangelicals, he would have chosen Huckabee. He's vetted, unbelievably likable, and would have shored up his base. No, he was counting on the "disunity" between HC and BO supporters.
His problem is that he thought we would be like his base, unthinking automatons. McPOW has real understanding to contend with, he's just spoon fed (no pun intendend) with what his advisors can feed him at the last minute.

Rove spoke to a group at the Convention today, calling Biden a blowhard bozo(or something equally as juvenile) and said Palin was risky, but could activate the base and bring in a lot of money.

I think I saw somewhere today (the NYT? I've been reading too much news ...) that Karl Rove said that Obama said "exactly the right thing" about the Bristol's-baby story. So yeah, he's made no effort to shore her up, at least not last I heard.

Great post - great comments. But the headline is all wrong.
I see nothing that's "slo-mo" about this Alaskan goat rodeo. This is more like the proverbial reactor core meltdown - once it gets going, there's just no stopping it.

Sorry for this, but when is a joke not a good joke? When you have to explain it.
Greg's title is specifically pointing out just how incredibly fast this is unfolding (just part of today) by eluding to that fact that he can only explain it in Slo-Mo.
Despite the need to explain… It is a damn good title Greg!

Point well taken, Dave K. But remember that, with her daughter grown, HRC is not planning to have any more children. Thus, she does not run the risk of giving birth to a special needs child -- a serious consequence of a woman's *choice* not to use birth control after a certain age. Whether you think that's a responsible choice for a woman who's already caring for five children while serving as Leader of the Free World depends on your point of view.

If ohn McCain says she will be just fine as a VP because he was a POW, I will cut off my feet, install wheels with rims on the ankles and slide my black ass to arizona to piss in his pool.

While McCain's people could not have vetted for a teenage pregnancy, there is still plenty of stuff out there that should have alerted them to Palin's unsuitability.
Sadly for the Dems, her fifteen minutes are just about up.
September 1, 2008 7:08 PM | Reply | Permalink
Exactly! The media hasn't even really touched on the stuff that matters. Forget the pregnant daughter. That's the least of her problems.
September 1, 2008 7:15 PM | Reply | Permalink
If she gets dumped (she will, within 5-7 days; maybe before Wed. if they're smart), I think Dems can attack McCain MERCILESLY on McCain's shoddy work, being unfit, being reckless / erratic / dangerous, and more, more, more. All the stuff we never really had the traction for/proof of.
It's going to be beautiful.

Oh happy days! I'm sure the republicans will come out strong in her defense for the next day or two-attacking the media and the dems as usual--and, by the time they realize the enormity, it'll be too late.
Good riddance right-wing pukes!

Agreed. I hope (not really) that Johnny Sidekick's using this time to vet his next VEEP. (I mentioned Wednesday b/c that's when the VP is scheduled to speak, I think. Meant to mention that above...) How amazing is the drama gonna be on Wednesday if McCain...:
1. Fires a VP at 8am
2. Hires a new VP at 2pm,
3. Then, at 8pm, that new VP gives a speech trying to appear confident in the face of abject failture?
TMZ and TheSuperficial must be loving this.

Bush taught McSame how to look into people's souls. That was all the vetting needed.
By the way, I just realized while writing this that both Palin and Putin start with a "P" -- further evidence of Palin's experience in foreign affairs!

Here's another vetting question that doesn't seem to have been asked: Given that Sarah Palin chooses not to use birth control herself, and given that she is clearly still fertile, couldn't she theoretically continue popping out little future moose hunters every year as VP -- or as president if the old guy croaks?

Why?
Dude as as been said: There is no maternity leave for the goddamn president.
There isn't for the Vice P, either - I don't want a president or vice president going into labor right when someone decides to blow something up that belongs to us.

Look - the glass ceiling has nothing at all to do with being president and being pregnant.
There are choices in life. If you are a woman of child bearing age and in the middle of having your family, you have no goddamn business running for president.
I'm sorry - there is no maternity leave for the leader of the fucking country.
September 2, 2008 12:46 AM | Reply | Permalink
Agreed. The office of the presidency is just different--period. As much as the republicans have presented it as a job that just anyone can do, it isn't. And the last eight years should have taught us that. If I take six months maternity leave it doesn't require invocation of the fucking 25th Amendment. It requires me writing to the Court of Appeals and asking them not to assign me any cases from date X to date Y.
I am a feminist (I graduated from Whitman College for god's sake) but even I draw the line. We don't have a "right" to any job we want and then up and take three months off.
But I forgot--maternity leave for the world's greatest mother Sarah Palin only lasts three days, not three months.
September 2, 2008 3:52 AM | Reply | Permalink
Theoretically, yes. In practice, not likely, not unless she's using hormones. I dabble in genealogy, and 44-45 is the maximum maternal age that you expect to see. Not that it doesn't sometimes happen entirely naturally for women to give birth at greater ages, but it's unusual, and it's something that you always question when you see it unless you have unimpeachable documentation for it.

This comment was posted on the previous post, but it bears mentioning again, McCain picked Palin solely to take the spotlight away from BO speech. He rushed it, didnt do any vetting and now his sloppiness is bitting him in the butt.
Even if this blows over, the fact is the damage to McCain has been done. His judgment and credibility has taken a hit.

LOL Too damn funny...
But what gets me is this, she postures herself as "one of us" who is down to earth, and then puts herself on the VP pedestal, talks up the honesty and transparency thing.. and then, and then...
She wants "privacy" as if she lacked the common freaking sense to imagine this reaction. I mean honestly, if she had announced this the day of her nomination, 'soon to be grandmom' and had cut-off at the pass the issue, I mean I can say that I would have been sympathetic.
But I get a sense that these people talk the good talk of being down to earth, and then have a dual standard on behavior. I sense that now. I sense a disconnect with the response that would reasonably be expected and what Palin has provided. An elitist, well I want the attention, I want the privacy, well I want what I want attitude and the hell with what "the people" want.
Animal farm behaviour and yesterday my gut response was positive.
I'm running for VP, one heartbeat from the office of president.. uhmmm I want some privacy???
There is no maternity leave for the office of president of the united states.
I suggest that she focus on taking care of her family if she wants the privacy.

No I mean it. No B.S.
I get the feeling that this is somebody who thinks that there is two standards. One for her and the other for the rubes.
I mean what part of reality is she connected to if she feels that this would not be a story that the media and "especially people" evaluating her credentials for the POTUS would not be interested in?
I hear her now and I hear a stump speech delivered by a former news anchor and beauty pageant queen, loving the spotlight and sensitive to 'branding' an image.
But heh folks this ain't Mayberry Alaska. This is the United States of America. I just read an article at Drudge that says in effect, well in Alaska this is OK... well that is why she is governor of Alaska, as if the hot-dog vebdor and Donald Trump are both equals as they both have the title entreprenuer and salesman, but really.. I mean if she hasn't what it takes to go to the camera now, splaining the circumstances, family by her side, and state that she should have disclosed this "UP FRONT" in her acceptance speech.. as a mother and a grand mother.. otherwise I feel either deceived or that she promotes a double standard... tell me which it is?????
I'm not at all surprised by the Brother in law picking a fight and then pulling his badge in the bar, or.. the governor, then trying to have him fired, or.. the double standard of the "we are the governor" and our child don't do no stinking school....
I mean get real.. if she wants to be miss down to earth.. then stop the deception and games.. it's not as if she didn't know her daughter was pregnant, even if McCain might have, or might have not...
I mean which is it.. a double standard or decepetion?
I mean maybe she should help her daughter get an education at college, not force her to marry, and there are other things in life to consider...
I mean really her handling of this raises questions.
