Polls Show No Convention Bounce Yet For McCain

The Republican Convention has thus far shown no movement for John McCain in the national polls, according to the two major daily trackers.

Today's Rasmussen poll give Barack Obama a 50%-45% lead, outside of the ±2% margin of error and unchanged from Obama's 50%-45% lead the day before.

The Gallup poll gives Obama a 49%-42% lead, outside of their ±2% and in fact slightly better for Obama than the previous day's 49%-43% lead.

Bear in mind that neither of these three-day tracking polls include responses from after last night, which featured the fiery speeches from Sarah Palin and Rudy Giuliani. It should be a few more days before we get a real feel for how they've affected the race, along with John McCain's speech tonight.

Joe Biden handled this Palin answer perfectly.

Scroll down to video:

That's how every Democrat should respond.

Democrats should take note. Matt Lauer was trying desperately to get Joe Biden to say something that would diminish or attack Sarah Palin.

No one, not one Democrat should take that bait.

I thought Biden was supposed to be the gaffe machine?

The GOP is probably all on him hoping to pick up a "sexist" statement or two.

I think Hillary Clinton, Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, Kathleen Sebelius, Janet Nepalitano and Claire McCaskill, NOW and Emily's List can, will and should hammer Sarah Palin. Obama and Biden are playing it perfectly as long as they give that task to them while they continue to hammer Johnny McInsane.

Yeah baby! O-Man will be up 2-3-4 when all the dust settles, and will hold serve. The GOP's got nothing. They want to run this race on who'll offer more change and 'reform'? Okay! Yosemite Sam and Klondike Barbie? Reformers? Sure!

I am an American and I want my politicians being truthful and honest. I want them to handle things with class.

I don't want them throwing shit because that is what they are told to do. I don't want them having personal vendettas against anyone who is not for them.

Can you guess who I am voting for?

How dare you choose a candidate on the basis of honesty and competence. Why don't you respond to the hate attacks and fine speech abilities of Sarah Palin? The media fell for it, why can't Americans be so stupid?

Traitor Joe

I know I should take the polls with a grain of salt but Im interested to see a poll centered around independents and undecideds after the RNC convention.

I think that it is too early to really even bother with convention bounce speculation but I would say that any gain McCain would have gotten from the hurricane stunt should show up here. So, with the usual caveats, that part is good news.

Indeed. Too early to tell. There will likely be a bounce next week -- just as we've seen with Obama this week. Hurricanes may have an effect as well. The bottom line is that this race will be close all the way to November... especially with the addition of McCain's new attack dog.

http://thepajamapundit.com/

I have to believe that after the speech last night and the downer of McCain's speech tonight the polls will still be in Barack's favor. If there is any increase it will be because the sleeping conservatives liked Palin and decided to vote for McCain. I have to believe that Indy's and Hillary supporters will join us and vote for Barack.

But I am still going to get out and work my ass off for Barack.

Any positive Sarah effect will show in tomorrow's poll results, and I expect that McCain might get a couple of points. Friday, you might see anothe point from McCain's acceptance and that will be it. They'll, at best, come within 2 to 3 points of Obama.

Sarah Palin, all teleprompter no Moose.

All Hate, not cattle.

Where's the beef?

Yep.

That huskie ain't gonna mush.

All creation, no evolution.

I'm sorry ahead of this time for this one.

Maybe Joe Biden came come back with something like this:

"When the lights of the RNC are dimmed, and the bouncing, inflatable Baby Trig is returned to the Hollywood soundstage..."

Over the top?

user-pic

Not only over the top but disgusting. Why would you even suggest Biden denigrate an innocent, special need child in his counter? Yes, I know the Palins are pimping out their family but still . . .

user-pic

Not only over the top but disgusting. Why would you even suggest Biden denigrate an innocent, special need child in his counter? Yes, I know the Palins are pimping out their family but still . . .

Also, one other note. Does any of these talks remind you of all those steroid baseball players who apologize and say they will change, but not say from what they will change or for what they are apologizing for?

I am sorry for what I have done, but I will not admit what I have done. blah blah blah blah.

GOP promises change? from what? The first step to change is admitting the mistakes and taking responsibility for them. Has that happened?

The only change I want to see is to kick the republicans out to the curb.

I always like the "I'm sorry if I offended anyone" line. Not sorry about any action that I took, only that someone took offense.

The Sarah Palin you heard last night was just a sock puppet. She read what was written for her.

The media is praising her for how she read the words. Well DUH! She worked on TV reading from scripts, so now we are supposed to be amazed when she did the same thing last night.

There was a headline on Yahoo news this morning, saying 'media praise Palin speech.' and guess what, it linked to an article in the McCainico, er, Politico, and referenced the praise she was receiving on, get this, *right-wing radio* and Fox News. And a couple of pundits who appear on various news shows.

That's it. But the headline characterized the reaction as being across the board and the political spectrum. GIve me a fucking break.

Genius! SP. Sarah Palin. Sock Puppet.

Yup, Yup.

It's fairly obvious. The Dow Jones is down 300 points today. You can visit any financial site to see it. Etrade, yahoo finance, etc.

Does this have anything to do with Palin? who knows...

user-pic

Personally, I want to see Joe Biden get a lot tougher and a lot faster.

This is bullshit - that's how Kerry lost - ignoring shit.

Nevermind the sexism charge - women will not be offended, by and large - I can just about guarantee that.

I agree- but it's MCCAIN they need to go after aggressively. Can't get decoyed into overinflating the importance of a running mate.

Yeah, I'm w/Steve on this one. No need to hyper-react McCain-style. Best play it cool, cool, keep it cool - Obama style.

Yeah, I'm w/Steve on this one. No need to hyper-react McCain-style. Best play it cool, cool, keep it cool - Obama style.

I think Joe is schooling the press: Calm down. Forget the silly stuff. What are they gonna do to dig us out of the hole they have dug us into? That's what we need to hear. (Why don't you guys in the media ask some substantive questions?)

user-pic

There will be a bounce everyone, let's not get cocky. It's going to come, it can't not.

But if I were Obama, I'd roll out Colin Powell to squash the bounce. C'mon Powell, you said you wanted to see the choice of VP and what that said about the candidates...you have all you need!

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

Don't get your hopes up on Powell. He's cautious and won't join a loser. His commitment now won't help Obama rebuild his lost credibility. Likewise, from reading Powell's past writings and his public service work, I can't imagine he's too pleased with the vicious orgy Obama's nutroots following and media have wrecked upon Palin's family.

I love the fact that someone who writes

Next up, Obama's lies about his ties to terrorist Ayers and the money problems he's apart of at Chicago Annenberg Challenge where $160 MILLION were squandered on friends, business associates, political associates, and terrorists with no positive contribution to Chicago's education system.

refers to others as "the nutroots".

Uh, that's "wreaked".

When I went to bed last night I said a prayer that General Powell would do the right thing and be one of the first to step forward and not only endorse Obama but also raise in public, on a live mic, doubts about McCain.

The Economist is not fooled:

"One of the biggest problems with the Bush administration is that it appointed so many incompetents because they were sound on Roe v Wade. Mrs Palin’s elevation suggests that, far from breaking with Mr Bush, Mr McCain is repeating his mistakes."

OUCH!

http://www.economist.com/world/unitedstates/displaystory.cfm?story_id=12066224

OUCH, in deed... truth in journalism has arisen!

Kurtz had a good question, though: where is Hillary?

Is she going to say anything, or sit back in revenge against Obama?

I would guess all she would have to say is something like, "Bless Gov. Palin's heart. But I have to say, I don't need any men to write my speeches for me. And I don't go into hiding instead of answering the tough questions."

It would be devastating. But will she do it?

I'm hopeful that Hillary's not hanging back to spite Barack. I think it's more stateswomanlike to bide her time, let them have their fun, give the Sarah Palin Sock Puppet enough rope to hang herself with, and then come out this weekend or next week with one devastating, memorable remark. Right now it will get lost in the noise. Give people a chance for the scales to fall from their eyes.

user-pic

The "bless her heart..." stuff is not Hillary's style. That's Southern belle barracuda style, and Hillary has never pretended to be a Southern belle. That was, in fact, one of her biggest problems in the early days as Arkansas's first lady -- she was too blunt for Southern tastes.

But I think sending Hillary out to stomp on Sarah Palin would be the wrong thing to do. It would be elevating Palin to a status she does not deserve. The Democratic women governors seem to be handling this quite well, and as fellow governors, I think they are the very best ones to be pointing out where Palin falls short.

Hillary is best reserved for going after McCain.

I know I'm biased, but I usally know a good speech when I see one, and I have to say I was underwhelmed. Is the media being bamboozled?

My goodness, the crowd was cheering her like crazy before she even spoke one word. They cheered for her even when she said mundane things.
The right wing may have made the media doubt what they saw, but not me.

The emperor had no clothes.

Enjoy these favorable numbers for Obama while they last. Once polling catches up to the backlash over the nutroots and media orgy against Palin and positive response to her spectacular speech last night Obama's numbers will fall dramatically. And, to be fair, assuming McCain doesn't blow it tonight.

Obama was called and mocked on his complete lack of experience last night. Worse, Palin hit home on his lack of military experience and credibility. Sure, her only 'experience' is as governor heading up the state's national guard and as well, as a concerned mother of a son deploying to Iraq next week, but she oozes credibility on the issue in a way that Obama with his re-made Hyde Park anti-war speech can never claim. Yep, enjoy the numbers now because Obama's 15-minutes are up.

Next up, Obama's lies about his ties to terrorist Ayers and the money problems he's apart of at Chicago Annenberg Challenge where $160 MILLION were squandered on friends, business associates, political associates, and terrorists with no positive contribution to Chicago's education system.

The perfect example of what's wrong with the Republican party. You can say she delivered her speech well, but it wasn't the greatest speech ever. She isn't the best possible choice McCain could have made. The Rs propensity to promote themselves by ridiculing the opposition rather than pointing out their positive attributes is not a quality to admire.

(The above was for fogu2, in case that wasn't clear.)

Senator Obama is ahead in North Dakota.

It's kinda depressing today. THe media are infatuated with McPalin, and no one is checking the fact and that her speech is full of hatred, and has no substance, and issues are even being spoken about.

This is a disgrace when will journalists do their job in this country?

Don't know why you're surprised, it's been the same for all of Obama's speeches...well except for the "infatuated with McPalin" part.

The state polls that came out yesterday are giving Obama a pretty good bounce in the electoral vote projections. See

I really enjoy the self-refuting posts. How about we wait a couple days to analyze McCain's "bounce"?

user-pic

What, no mention of the new North Dakota poll showing Obama with a 4 point lead?:
Obama (D) 43%, McCain (R) 40%

It's a six point swing versus the most recent poll of the state (by another organization). I think it's interesting in that in anyone can relate to Alaskans, it's North Dakotans, and this poll was taken after the Palin announcement.

The media is propping up Palin to continue the horserace because dropping her from McCain's ticket is unthinkable - political suicide. TPM, please continue to expound on the fact that the Noonan, Murphy, Todd hot mike proves that the media is lying when they pretend that Palin is not a deeply flawed VP pick.

It is the media's credibility, not Palin's that is suffering based on that little open mic exchange.

Another important thing about Gallup's analysis today: Apparently the race is hardening. There are fewer swing voters. This is not good news for the candidate behind. I'm thinking only a big scandal or some huge game-changing move on McCain's part can knock Obama off course.

We will a good picture after Saturday. I expect mcWar to talk about: I was a POW therefore I deserve to be elected, and i am sure he will talk about his economic plans...

They are all scrambling right now to get Palin.

Her star is rising. Obama fatigue has left a media vacuum and she's going to fill it.

In 2012 it will be Palin vs. Clinton. A guaranteed female president one way or the other.

What planet are you living on? You're living a fantasy.

user-pic
Obama fatigue has left a media vacuum...

But, but, he's the "world's biggest celebrity". There can't possibly be a Republican celebrity who all the talkshows are clammoring for.

And like most celebrities he's fad. He's so last month.

user-pic

As opposed to the whole Palin fad? You really need to think these things through a little more before posting.

Let's see, how many times have your predictions been right? Wait, let me think -- if I'm not mistaken, "0" is the answer.

Gotta hand it to you -- your reliability as a negative predictor is quite an achievement...

Identify a single prediction of mine that has been wrong.

I predicted that after both conventions it will be a dead heat. Let's just see how that pans out shall we.

(BTW, Clinton would be the nominee had Obama not gotten all lawyered up to block MI/FL. And the Dems would be a lock for the WH. Now, not so much.)

Idiot!!! Dead heat in the polls after the conventions. Here's a deal for you fogu2, you don't post here again or I won't post here again for whomever is wrong on the polls...deal?

It still hurts doesn't it.

Here's a prediction: after November 4, you're going to be very angry at first, and then sad, and then a little later, fearful.

Here's a prediction: after November 4, you're going to be quite angry at first, and then very sad; and then a little later, fearful.

Here's a prediction: after November 4, first you will be very angry, and then quite sad; then, a little later, fearful.

So much for "celebrity" attacks, huh? Now McCain has his own Britney/Lynn Spears melodrama to contend with. Now, I get it: the Spears/Hilton ad was a coded message and a test balloon.

I imagine lots of women, as well as men, would partly blame poor parental supervision for a teenage daughter's pregnancy. I'm surprised there's been next to no mention of this with regard to Bristol Palin's pregnancy and I've seen no polling or focus group reports on the issue. I doubt even the most liberated woman or man would deny that as Governor of Alaska and now as McCain's VP running mate, Sarah Palin is a very busy woman with less time than the average mom for her large family.

user-pic

Bill Clinton had enough time to "tend" to Monica, I'm sure she'll find time to tend to the kids. I also love how all of you "Progressives" assume the father won't be around to help at all...you guys are so pathetic when you get scared.

user-pic

You conservatives still fixated on Clinton's penis I see. I'd thought you'd found a different hobbyhorse by now.

Fact is, Palin's one of these nutters that rail against Planned Parenthood and permiscuous teens all the while professing "abstinence only" sex ed. Then it comes to light that she has a pregnant, unwed teen daughter thus holding her personal family's behavior to a different standard - "unwed, teen pregnancy for me, but not for thee". Now that's pathetic.

Scared? Not so much...

I have exausted my rolodex of women I know personally who were willing to discuss Sarah Palin. My sample size is a paltry 26, women from CA and MI mostly, a few from NC, and two from WA, a mix of progressives and not so much.

And all of them, however long it took them to get there, in the end, returned to this: she needs to stay home with those kids.

It's not a gender issue or a fear issue. It's a coming to an obvious conclusion, and offering her a way to exit gracefully.

She will not take it, of course, and John McCain has lost this election, either way.

For me it's not even the question of combining stressful with the duties of parenthood. The horrible thing is to watch how Sarah Palin has brought Bristol into the international media spotlight when the young woman has probably enough anxieties about her future life as a young mother as it is.

Palin could easily have said, "It's a private matter," and then sequestered her daughter away from public scrutiny -- but she didn't.

The hypocrisy of right-wing "family values" has never been clearer than in this instance.

Sure thing. Like scared enough to nominate an unknown, inexperienced, female governor who seems to have a penchant for lying - at a time when the country is fighting two wars - in a desperate attempt to rally the theocrats? Sounds like McCain is the one who is scared and has run home to beg forgiveness from the American Taliban.

No to North Dakota and Alaska similarity.

Alaskans have a very independent libertarian streak - and will pay no taxes - they expect the government to give them money.

And they have tolerated a level of graft and corruption that would have caused multiple tar and fetherings on the plains.

Alsakans are very independent look the other way people. Northern plains are more conservative and tend to be their brothers' keepers and their sister's watchers.

user-pic

And lest we forget (at our great peril): while all this is going on at home, Dick Cheney is over in Georgia doing his best to stir up conflict with Russia. If he succeeds in creating an international crisis, it could help the Old Warhorse McCain in the eyes of frightened Americans -- though unquestionably Obama, whose response to every threat isn't to bomb someone, would be the better man to confront the crisis.
Someone needs to put a muzzle on Cheney, or at least "bear witness out loud" to what he's doing.

Umm, for all you concerned trolls out there, SFCWallace, Fogu, Weaver, we're not scared. Frankly, I'm a bit amused by the sophomporic display put on by the Republicans last night. it was cute and all, but at the end of the day what is their offer? It is just, "We're not Obama." Meanwhile, the base eats it up like a fly chewing on a pile of warm crap but, but you know what, it's still a steamy pile of crap. What I have not seen, is one person, even a die-hard Hillary supporter, who has said in public, "You know, I was on the fence, or for Obama, but with that Palin pick, now I'm for McCain."

So go ahead trolls, ya'll are all fired up now and running around whooping while swing voters are saying what the fuck is this?

I'm a Clinton supporter and I'm on the fence. Obama is not convincing. I've always voted Dem but he is not believable. Palin brings believability and experience. I still have issues with the Rep platform but by and large I now feel that McCain can likely deliver on his promises. I'm just not convinced I like the promises. Obama on the other hand is still just a windbag. I can easily imagine him as a president full of excuses as to why things just didn't work out or a lot of finger-pointing when things go south. Hehas not demonstrated anything other than that he can give a great, pandering speech. Not enough.

Sarah Palin reads a speech written for her by people she barely knows, saying stuff the likes of which she's never been heard to say before, and you find that convincing. Yes, my eyes are rolling.

He will get a "bounce" when he does better in the polls this weekend than he does during the week (which he always does).

Just an advanced heads up for when it happens, ignore the fake bounce he gets this weekend. More accurately, ignore the fake big bounce he gets the weekend, because, like everyone, he will get a convention bounce, it just wont be as big as it will look on Sunday and Monday's numbers.

I've seen Debbie Wasserman-Schultz fight back but not Clinton. Do you think Hillary will assist? Or will she just send out a response via press release?

Perhaps ironic but the fact that 37 million people watched Gov. Palin last night (1 mill shy of Obama) is good news if initial focus group reactions are any indication. People curious about the VP nominee got a good look at the polished side of Sneer. Here's hoping the Gov has a presser in a week or two to explain the lies about the Bridge, Obama's record, her love of earmarks and all the other facts the MSM have dredged up as a result of their obscene effort to commit journalism.

She's good and she's "energized the base." Just hope her good looks don't peel off too many independents who can't think beyond their zippers.

I still think The Chosen One will lose this thing, though. And God help us all.

Hope that log in your eye doesn't pain you too much, bro'.

I am not sure if this has been covered about polls. Does anyone know if they just poll folks with land lines? Seems that most of the folks I know only have cell phones these days. That should make a huge difference for Obama since most folks who are more tech savvy would be for Obama.
