Poll: Obama Holding Up Well Under Attacks On His Character

There's a lot in the internals of the new New York Times poll to chew over, but I wanted to highlight a few numbers that seem to suggest that Obama's holding up pretty well under the withering assault on his character the McCain campaign has hit him with for months now.

Despite the months of attacks designed to portray him as an elitist and culturally out of touch with ordinary Americans, here are some of the findings:

* Obama's favorable rating of 45% is a shade higher than McCain's of 44%. And in this poll Obama's fave numbers are up six points since August.

* Sixty percent think Obama "understands the needs and problems of people like yourself" -- compared to only 48% who say the same about McCain.

* Sixty-six percent think Obama "shares the values most Americans live by" -- more than the 61% who say the same about McCain.

* Fifty-seven percent think Obama is "someone you can relate to."

It's true that McCain is still seen as far more prepared for the job and more likely to be an effective commander-in-chief. But an astonishing 48% say the economy and jobs will be most important to them in picking a president -- more than three times the number (14%) who say terrorism and national security will be most important.

One key to besting McCain on the economy will be for Obama to resist attacks on him as snooty and out of touch, and according to these numbers, at least, he appears to be doing that.

But how come Obama is loosing in the electoral college? what does he have to do to get those numbers back up!?

According to whom? Pollster still has Obama up.

(Also, keep in mind, according to Nate Silver, state polls always lag behind national polls.)

Hey hyperRevue. I got it off of Electoral-vote.com. They have the numbers as Obama 243 McCain 274 Ties 21.

that's what led me to ask my question. thoughts?

"But how come Obama is loosing in the electoral college? what does he have to do to get those numbers back up!?"

Not to worry. The state polls always seem to lag the national polls. They should be moving back up by next week.

Some are already moving back to Obama (like VA).

The only swing state is PA. McCain is given Florida, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Nevada and Colorado. That's a stretch at this point.

Check out Real Clear Politics
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/maps/obama_vs_mccain/?map=5

with swing states Obama 207, McCain 216
With no toss up, Obama 273 McCain 265

user-pic

The interesting thing about RCP is they both have 157 "Solid"...that number was a lot higher for Obama just before the conventions.

Obama's electoral lead held up for several days after the conventions as well. It took about a week for them to swing to McCain. It will take a few days for them to swing back, assuming state polling trends follow national trends.

I don't know why it's so interesting. Palin was a gift to the Christianists in the party who weren't exactly fired up about supporting McCain. She has consolidated his support in traditionally red states. I think I saw a poll a few days ago that showed most of her support was coming from the South....shocking, I know.

user-pic

WTF is a Christianist? You mean Christian?

Christianist is to Christian as Islamist is to Muslim.

A Christianist is someone who is assholier than thou.

Assholier than SFCWallace?

...does that require professional training?

LK

user-pic

Thanks so much for that. I have been asking what the Christian equivalent to Islam is. Every since Palin was announced I came to the conclusion that we have christian extremists in this country who are the moral religious equivalent of muslim extremists. Individuals so outraged about the morals of society based on their religious views that they are willing to kill innocent citizens for those beliefs.

These Christianists were responsible for the bombing of abortion clinics and the killing of physicians in this country. I consider them every bit as much to be God's Warriors as Islamists extremists are.

All of them beleive in killing in the name of God.
If we look at history, we also know that the Christian Crusades were some of the bloodiest wars in European history.

Evangelicals have become the American Taliban.

user-pic

" I came to the conclusion that we have christian extremists in this country who are the moral religious equivalent of muslim extremists. Individuals so outraged about the morals of society based on their religious views that they are willing to kill innocent citizens for those beliefs."

...please link to the news reports of the US Christianists kidnapping people and beheading them for being "non-believers"...

Red herring. He was talking about bombing abortion clinics. Nice try, though.

A Christianist is a member of the religious right.

I find the term a little strange myself, but I am lead to understand that the distinction between a "Christian" and "Christianist" is the same as the distinction between a "Muslim" and an "Islamist." That is to say, as it is used, the term "Christianist" is intended to designate someone who not only practices Christianity, but endeavors to unite Christians into an organized political entity with distinctly Christian organizing principles.

It's a useful word. Sullivan is a big promoter of it.

Annoying word isn't it? I much prefer the term "dominionist" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominionism.

But, then again terms like "evolutionist", "evolutionism", and the "Democrat Party" are also kind of stupid. Then again, stupid is as stupid talks.

It's like the difference between a member of the Democratic Party and a member of the Democrat Party.

Oops, analogy already given. There go my elitist credentials!

Great minds, TC, great minds. BTW, that's a really cute kitty!

The electoral college projections lagged the poll numbers when the McCain bounce started too, and some never flipped to McCain. I think it's related to the date range of the polls they include -- the tracking polls are "now" whereas the state polls in the electoral projections include information from the last couple of weeks.

user-pic

Electoral-vote.com is crocked at the moment. They seem to have included all the polls that favor McCain and none that favor Obama. Worse yet, they have polls that actually showed Obama in front listed as favoring McCain.

Example: The Selzer & Co. poll in Indiana this week showed Obama three points in front. Electoral-vote.com lists it as two points in McCain's favor.

Another example: Electoral-vote's poll for Montana spots McCain a six point lead, ignoring a newer one that gives him only a two point lead.

Yet another example: The newest polls in Ohio and Virginia both have Obama in front. But what does Electoral-vote.com do? They go and average back more than a week, thereby spotting McCain a lead, despite the fact that what they always used to do was just use the newest poll.

In other words, electoral-vote.com is adopting a heads-McCain-wins, tails-Obama-loses approach to tallying data at the moment. It is worse than worthless, it is propaganda. Although not entirely. They do choose to use the newest poll in New York state, which flips that from a weak Dem to a strong Dem state.

But the bottom line is, no consistent methodology, and selectiveness that is inflating McCain's electoral vote tally. Go to fivethirtyeight instead. Yes, I know it still shows a McCain lead as well. But the difference is, it actually uses scientific methodology, and given the latest round of polls it is likely to flip back to Obama within a week or so.

user-pic

I think it's a big mistake to call Electoral Vote "crooked". A month ago they had Obama up by 100 EV's, and they've been consistent in their methodology.

But there are problems with that methodology. Four years ago that site was on the cutting edge of political blogs, but they've been left far behind by Pollster and Five Thirty Eight in this cycle. All polls are not created equal, but Electoral Vote gives them all equal weight.

I think the answer to the question in the first post is that state polling always lags behind national polling trends, especially when you're this far out from election day. National polls are conducted every day but the most recent state poll, even in a battleground state, might be a couple of weeks old. Compilation sites like ev.com and Pollster make matters worse by averaging even older polls into the final result.

What we're seeing on the electoral vote maps today is reflective of where the race actually was at the peak of the post-convention McCain bounce. Obama is carrying a 3-5 point lead in the daily tracking polls, which will translate into a huge electoral college lead as contemporary state polling becomes available.

And Mr Silver has explained a few times that his site's algorithm is designed to make projections based on poll numbers, not just to report what the state would do if the election were held today.

user-pic

It's true that McCain is still seen as far more prepared for the job and more likely to be an effective commander-in-chief.

And why not? McCain will take out that nasty Zapatero guy who makes those Zs in the sand with his sword, while Obama wants to meet with the hostile leaders of Islamistan. I know effectiveness and preparedness when I see it, Greg.

This is good news, but also perhaps a little scary. What will the McCain camp do when they realize it is not working? I doubt they will stop ... here comes the bathroom sink (they are out of kitchen sinks)!

"This is good news, but also perhaps a little scary. What will the McCain camp do when they realize it is not working?"

I think this is the reason that both Obama and Biden have been careful up until now to limit the personal stuff against McBush & Palin.

They have branded McBush as a liar and Palin is starting to fade where she belongs - the background.

The trend I see often now, is that the press reports a McBush statement, but is also debunking it at the same time if it is a grevious lie.

Even the negative stuff that is now coming out of Obama's people are truthful enough that he still comes across as the more truthful politician. (The McBush surrogates are not having much traction trying to push the opposite).

What's coming next? Tons of racist ads, weak on terra Boo Terrorists! stuff, push polling, Swift Boat stuff.

The fact that MSM is now apparently on Obama's side much of the time when they do this kind of stuff is very significant, IMO.

Very wise strategy by Obama, IMO, although it drove all of us crazy at the time. MSM will remember who started the serious mud slinging, I'm glad to see.

The other significant finding in that poll is the large majority of people (65% to 37%) see Obama as the one most likely to bring "real change".

That says that so far McCain is losing the battle to recast himself as a change agent (which he obviously should lose). When the huge majority of people believe the country is on the wrong track, winning the "change" argument will help bolster pretty much every other policy argument. The one who wins the change argument wins the election.

The McCain campaign is following in the footsteps of the Clinton campaign. If this kind of advantage for Obama on "change" holds up for a few weeks, expect to see the McCain version of the "kitchen sink" strategy.

It will not be pretty. Brace yourselves.

Did everyone notice the Favorable/Unfavorable numbers on 538 today? According to Mr. Silver's average of the most recent four polls, Obama and Biden have net favorable/unfavorable ratings of +18 and +17 respectively, while McCain and Palin have +9 and +7 respectively. Mind you, Palin's number was +17 just a week ago, so these new data mean that she is crashing precipitously. That is the sort of trendline I like to see!

People are starting to realize the shiny sports car the dealer is trying to sell them has a 90 HP engine in it.

Yup. There ain't much under that hood.

Pufferfish

I know I'm a broken record, but McCain's gutter campaign still has their Rev. Wright card to play yet. I hope the Obama camp had counter-ads ready, and that they've worked out a strategy to defend that and change the subject quickly.

Yes, and per my comment up thread, when McCain moves to the "kitchen sink" strategy there will be no mercy. I think it will be uglier than anything we have ever seen in a presidential election.

The only hope would be that McCain has a change of heart and decides his integrity and reputation are worth preserving (what's left of it anyway), and forces moderation in his campaign. But given the way things have gone so far, I don't see McCain having the will, desire, or perhaps even power to do that.

I'm perfectly happy to see McLiar complete the destruction of his own reputation. Couldn't happen to a more deserving guy. He's ALWAYS been a sleazy, lying sack; he just had the reporters too bamboozled to see it.

When the McCain team brings out the Wright card, Obama brings out the Chelsea/gorilla/cunt card.

Always bring a gun to a knife fight.

user-pic

...and Obama's shot his "gutter wad" with McCain and Rush Limbaugh hate stupid Mexicans...so he's out of ammo.

Not hardly. If Obama really wanted to make this a hair-pulling, eye-gouging fight he could still: 1) bring up the Keating 5, 2) run on a can-you-trust-a-man-that-old-and-demonstrably-senile theme, 3) bring up the torrid extra-marital affair and/or 4) really go to town on allegations of corruption and abuse of power in the Alaska executive branch. Mind you, McCain can go lower still as well, so it is not as if all the ammo is in Obama's arsenal and none in McCain's. Do not believe, however, that Obama's campaign could not get nastier if it had to. It quite definitely could.

Aw, what's the matter, El Rushbo wants to spew his venom 24/7 and expects never to be quoted?

Get real.

El Rushbo. LOL. That's a good name for a villain in Mexican Wrestling.

user-pic

...what does he have to do with McCain? Should we attribute every over the top left-wingers quotes to Obama?

What's the difference if you do? This is exactly the strategy your side has been using for years now. Remember all those earnest Fox reporters and their "do you denounce Harry Belafonte's remarks" nonsense from a couple years back? Same fucking thing.

user-pic

I don't recall the Bush campaign running an ad with Kerry and Harry in it misquoting Harry...I'd be glad to recant if you can come up with one.

On Monday the New York Post published a shocking report accusing Barry Oilbama, who voted FOR the Bush Cheney Energy Bill, of interfering in U.S. foreign policy and ongoing military operations in Iraq by directly calling upon the Iraqs to delay any agreement with the United States to aid his political campaign. In public Oilbama has campaigned under the banner of opposing the war in Iraq while in private he has actively sought to undermine the United States and extend it. Americans are being unnecessarily killed and wounded by his actions. The media has ignored thisโ€”the American blood on Oilbamaโ€™s hands, his sabotage of United States foreign policy and military operations, his duplicity and lies, and the likely criminal violation of the Logan Act. Senators Jack Reed and Chuck Hagel, who accompanied Oilbama to Iraq and likely participated in his dicussions with Iraqโ€™s leaders, have also been silent.

Oilbama's lack of character has been kept silent by compliant media shills.

Well if the new york post says its true then it must be true.... lol

Baseless assertions. Give us proof/links, troll, or go home.

First, it wasn't a report - it was an op-ed. Second, if it was true, was has no other publication picked it up?

"Dem" BillC, you do not have the faintest clue what the SFA is about (neither one, I would venture to guess.)

It has nothing to do with current and short-term troop levels.

Kindly go fuck yourself.

user-pic

You might want to read this site's own debunking of the claim, by Zachery Roth. Amir Taheri has a solid reputation as a liar. He's a neocon shill and Chalabi guy. It makes perfect sense that Murdoch's paper would publish him.

George Bush and Dick Cheney have been breaking laws and thumbing their noses at Constitutional process for going on 8 years, and you DumBillC have your panties in a wad over Obama?

I am so looking forward to seeing crooked Republicans on trial and on their way to jail. And I have no doubt that when it happens you'll on this site screaming about how unfair it is.

Why did Barry Oilbama vote FOR George Bush and Dick Cheney's Energy Bill which contained 8 Billion is Give Aways to Big Oil?
How much Coke did Barry Oilbama do?

The question should be why did George Bush and Dich Cheney push that Oil Bill?

Which party does George Bush belong to? Which party does John McCain belong to? Who is more closely aligned with George Bush, McCain or Obama?

Answer those questions and it should all be pretty simple to understand.

Or the better question,

What country will you move to when Obama becomes President?

We're all looking forward to that.

perhaps we could interest you in one without widespread internet connectivity. I hear some of the more remote islands on the Seychelles are very nice.

user-pic

How much is Dubya missing, anyway?

I certainly expect the McCain campaign to do the limbo to see how low can they go.

When Johnny Mac was in a cell for 5 years he got whacked with bamboo poles, he didn't limbo under them! That's why its ok for his campaign to be so sleazy!

the more people see, hear, and, in general, "get to know" Obama, the more they like him.

and for McCain.....

well, he just shoots himself in the foot over and over.....

The elitist line is hard to sustain when you don't know how many houses you own.

The "I Will Be Leader" schtick is hard to sustain when you say you won't meet with your democratic, NATO allies, choose a VP who doesn't know what the Bush doctrine is and just got a passport last year, and don't know where Spain is.

Now the McCain campaign is saying he MEANT to say Spain is our enemy because he's a tough guy (not a clueless guy). Riiiiiiiight.

Now the McCain campaign is saying he MEANT to say Spain is our enemy because he's a tough guy (not a clueless guy). Riiiiiiiight.

I'd rather believe that McCain is just clueless. If he actually meant it then he is more unstable than we have realized.

Spain is our enemy? Yeah, let's see how that plays with the American public.

Apparently if you were a member of the Coalition of the Willing and realized what was going on and became a member of the Coalition of the Unwilling, you are on McStains shit list.

Beware: Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Philippines, Thailand, New Zealand, Tonga, Portugal, The Netherlands, Hungary, Singapore, Norway, Ukraine, Italy, Japan and Slovakia.

You have been warned.

Anyone else feel that we are the last ones at the party in Iraq?

I wish I could make a "you forgot Poland" joke here, but they have about 900 still there. Wikipedia claims that they're going to be withdrawn by October 2008, though.

It's getting clearer that when they say "elitist" they mean "smart".

McCain has now been branded as "the liar". When he brings up Jeremiah Wright, Rezko and Ayers again, the public is going to yawn. He's already used everything he has, and it hasn't worked. And in the process, his credibility has been ruined. Ruined. He's got nothing left.

And it is only going to get worse for Palin. Troopergate will NOT go away. The bipartisan Alaska State Legislature and the Commission are not on her side. And, the AG is going to learn very quickly that Palin is NOT his client, the citizens of the State of Alaska ARE.

"**McCain has now been branded as "the liar". When he brings up Jeremiah Wright, Rezko and Ayers again, the public is going to yawn.**"

@ Renegademom3,
The beauty of it is, in branding the "straight talk express" as a lyer, it rubs off on the Republican party brand.

to blmack....

Time is also reporting this, in addition to the Washington Post......I can use "the google" and find some other references if you'd like.

I love the internets.

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1842156,00.html

oops....sorry blmack....I thought you were referring to the Zapatero gaffe....not the NYPOST crapola......

at any rate, time HAS written about the Zapatero brain freeze incident....

New Hampshire by +3 for McCain?

Yeah right. ARG is horrible.

Even though these numbers look good, Obama supporters need to do everything we can to make sure it happens. Go to a field office or visit the website.

The thing is, and I think it has caught up with McCain, is that any questions about Obama's character have mostly from McCain's camp i.e. distortions, whereas McCain's character issues large come directly from the gaffe-meister himself both past and present.

Obama has just been reminding the voters what they are and what they mean.

Ah but now Lady Lynn Forrester de Rothschild says that Obama is an elitist. Expect his numbers to drop like a stone now.

I am still laughing at the idea of an aristocrat who thinks that Obama is too elitist. Man alive, truth really is stranger than fiction...

except for the fact that she just called working class Americans "rednecks", she may have had an ice queen's chance in hell of selling pawning off her chilly platitudes to someone who cared.

Once again Campbell Brown stepped out of character last night and totally shredded Ms. DeRothschild, coming to the conclusion that she was just another bitter PUMA.

I'm beginning to like Campbell.

"Ladies of Spain, I adore you...if only I knew where to find you!"

Not Latin America.

Speaking of which, the current graphic on the front page of Spain wedged between Colombia and Venezuela is priceless.

Right on.

"Oilbama". Hahaha Oh you tickle my funny bone.

I get it! You took OBAMA...and changed it to OILbama to make your clever and smart point. Seriously....all you had to do was add an "il after to "O" in Obama to make it "Oilbama" Where do you come up with this stuff? I bow down to your clever and witty word play.

I wonder if I can do it too......

Hmmmmmm

Dem BillC

How about... "Dumb BillC"? You see I changed the "e" to a "u" and added a "b" and VOILA..... "Dumb BillC". This expresses my opinion that you are dumb. Ohhhhhh I am clever too!

Howa bout "ShutheF*ckUpDem BillC". See by adding a "Shut The F*ck Up" to your name, it shows my desire for you to shut the f*ck and stop copying and pasting your republican talking points on every post. Ok that one's not as good as 'Dumb BillC", I admit. But I am just "learning" how to be as smart as you!

Okay, that's funny. Two thumbs up, and I don't even like Obama.

McSame and his wrecking crew still have lots more garbage to toss out, though. And in spite of this particular poll, I don't think Obama is doing a good job countering what's been tossed out so far.

Being "close" won't cut it. If he's going to win this thing, Obama has GOT to be 'way out front nationally.

Hilarious, thanks for that. Spewed my lunch.
Now, go after that f*cktard SFC Wallace.

Don't worry, if McShame thinks that a Kitchen sink campaign will work for him he'll be doomed and foolish, cause it ain't gonna work.
People will clearly see through that, voters will understand that that's the last ditch he's got to try to win and they won't buy it.

I already see some Obama's Ads sayin this:

"Here we are, since McCain is down in the polls, since he doesn't want to talk about the issues because he thinks this election is not about issues, he's campaign has decided to engage in a kitchen sink campaign to win, just like in 2004, but the American people will not accept it".

This kind of AD, featuring McShame, Bush and Karl Rove would just be devastating for McShame !

ARG is not to be trusted. They have Obama by +6 in Illinois. I don't think so....

Obama needs to push on Economy until the end. Strangely, the McWar campaigned has been acting strange since the economy crisis. They are on the defense, and have come up with nothing.
There can not talk about anything.

Senator Cantor yesterday got destroyed by Chris Matthews,

The McWar campaign is sinking, there is no doubt, and if they come with Rev Wright, at this time, they would shoot themselves in the foot.

For now, Obama needs to hammer McWar on economy, economy, and economy. Mcwar = deregulator = responsible for the economic crisis. McWar= Bush

Obama has also some ammunitions: kitting 5, and the latest gaffe from McWar with Spain

user-pic

Senator Cantor yesterday got destroyed by Chris Matthews...

Is there a video link for that? I'd really like to see it. I can't stand Eric Cantor. He's not my congressman, thank heaven (he represents the VA 7th CD, I'm in the 3rd), but it just offends me to have him (and Virgil Goode as well) in the Virginia delegation. I'd enjoy seeing Tweety rough him up a little.

Funniest headline of the morning (From HuffPost):

"Jeb Bush throws his brother under the bus at McCain town hall"

Of course, the headline is not supposed to be taken literally, but it's still a very funny image.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/17/jeb-bush-throws-his-broth_n_127281.html

As I (in Va.) watch (tv) Palin stump in Ohio today, I wonder if all her repeat one-liner zingers are going to be availible for sale on itunes or cd. People at these rallies eat up that stuff like flies on SH**

They know the lines by heart and cant wait for the next one to spew out.
... come Sarah play "I put it ebay" again or that one how does it go "the good 'ol boys network".

America wake up, smell the bs

call it like it is. John McCain is a Liar and Sarah's not qualified, HELLO

Love that line about the ole boy network being a McCain staff meeting. But it ain't just the lines, it's how they're delivered. That's where Obama is very effective.

A better line actually came right after that one.

Just a thought for everyone, the polls are not close, in fact they do not take into account the 11 million new voters he has registered. He is ahead in Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Colorado. It's game, set, and match. Obama in a landslide.

Well, let me say I'm glad that the Obama campaign doesn't think so.

Well they aren't going to say. Obama's ground game is amzaing and it is flying under the radar. That is how he beat HRC....

Just wondering if anyone else saw that Rachel Maddow topped Olberman in the ratings? She is the #1 rated MSNBC show. I am completely enamored of her and find her news show to be incisive, informative and I love how she goes for the jugular on the right issues.

I find Olberman's Countdown distracting with that Worst Persons in the World and Odd ball crap. It adds nothing of value to the newscast and is just plain silly.

Maddow is far more analytic and really gets into the issues with her guests. She has discussions that are superb. Her probing questions and insight are just great.

Olberman needs to watch out. Maddow can easily become the lead anchor in my book. I noticed that she seems to have eliminated that silly 'entertainment' crap they had as part of the show during the first few newscasts.

I barely tolerate that with Willy on Morning Joe in his News you don't need to Know.

Bottomline, Maddow is awesome...and let's continue to make sure she is tops in ratings!!

user-pic

Agreed. She also has better guests so far. She actually taps the progressive blogosphere and brings on true progressives like David Sirota. As much as I like KO, he typically goes for far more mainstream journalists.

Rachel is performing a great service for the nation by bringing on voices who have previously been locked out of the so-called "liberal media." In short, up until now, it's been all but impossible to have liberals and progressives ON the so-called "liberal media." Rachel is changing that dynamic. I just hope they let her continue the process of change.

user-pic

"Worst Persons" was better before Olbermann got on his "stick it to Fox News" kick. That's gotten really old.

But yes, I agree about Maddow. I have quickly become a big fan of hers. She's hard-hitting without being obnoxious; in fact, she seems genuinely nice. And, of course, she is really, really smart.

user-pic

That's a good point. She does seem genuinely nice. Her intelligence shines through that without a speck of hate. The same can't be said for Hannity, Limbaugh, Malkin, Coulter and that ilk. If they have any intelligence at all, you wouldn't be able to see it for all of the bile that comes out of their mouths.

It's too soon to tell, of course, but if Maddow succeeds, it may be a major twofer: A return to the media of sensible, smart, civil and adult conversation, with the addition of real progressive viewpoints. I hope this is the start of a trend.

user-pic

I think Obama has plenty of ammo left. As others have mentioned above, the Keating Five could sink McCain in this climate of financial meltdown. I think a lot of voters know nothing about it. Nor do they know anything about McCain's role in it. Obama could tell the truth, and sink him. And, if McCain wants to double down on the Rezco thing, Obama could talk about where Cindy McCain got all of her money. He could be truthful about it and admit that the facts are not 100% clear, but we do know that Cindy's daddy was a bootlegger with possible ties to the mob. Juxtapose that with a picture of Cindy and her $300,000 assemble at the RNC and that should sink him as well.

I'd also bring in Palin's creationism, her belief that humans walked with dinosaurs, her attempt to ban books in Wasilla, and her being on stage with the nutcase who thinks Alaska is a refuge state for the End of Days. We need to know if she, too, believes in the mother of all genocides. We need to know if she, too, actually wants billions of non-Christians to do in the near future. She said she thinks it will come to pass in her lifetime. Does she desire this?

All too many people do not realize the extent of Palin's ties to the religiously wrong. Reverend Wright's comments are tame in comparison with the bloodthirsty sadism of the religious right when it comes to the Rapture, etc. etc.

Perhaps she is refering to intellectual elitism. I think some people are. I, for one, LOVE that about Obama. He is intellectually superior. What do you guys think about that angle on elite?

Unfortunately, with the anti-intellectual sentimemt which is fashionable now, people don't value it as much as a regular guy you can have a beer with.

I think there's a lesson in this for all the dingbats who have been calling for Obama to "stand up for himself, get tough, attack, attack, attack." The McCain campaign's constant and shrill attempts to assassinate Obama's character have ultimately assassinated McCain's character, but not Obama's. Or to put it in language dingbats might understand, McCain pissed into the wind and got it all over him. Obama, please note, refrained from doing the same, and now looks all the better for it. Better yet, his shoes are dry.

user-pic

I disagree. I think it's vital for Obama to stand up for himself and get tough. And he has. He would not be regaining his lead right now if he continued to let McCain off the hook and control the narrative. It's essential that Obama remain on the attack right up until November 4th. He can do that with the truth and nothing but the truth. But he needs to stand tall, show strength and resolve, and never back down.

Americans won't vote for anyone they perceive as weak. They won't. Rightly or wrongly, be it total misperception or distortion, they won't vote for anyone they think is weak.

Obama is doing better now primarily because he's stopped letting the Republicans control the narrative.

I replying to a comment up thread - I know I pressed reply!! Arghh. Anyway - This is about the Lady Rothschild deal.

I hate it when that happens. I agree. Elite is code for smart.

Christians or Christianists? How about Christianistas!

By elitist read uppity n***r! They are running the vilest sort of election appealing to the basest prejudices of stupid voters.

user-pic

This is odd, to me. I have not heard any of the media pounce on McCain for saying at least twice that I have seen --at the 9/11 service summit and on The View-- that the reason his campaign went negative (or is that misrepresentation happy) is that Obama would not agree to do the town hall meetings that McCain wanted. He said that the "tone" of the campaign would have been different if Obama had just agreed to the town hall meetings. Is that the kind of patently juvenile mindset we want in a President?
