Poll: McCain Holds Four-Point Lead In Ohio

A new poll from Suffolk University finds McCain leading Obama in Ohio by four-points among likely voters, 46%-42%. The poll finds that McCain's lead is being driven by voter identification with Palin...

More respondents identify with Sarah Palin than with the other candidates. Asked which of the four candidates is "most like you," 31 percent said Palin, followed by Obama (22 percent), McCain (21 percent), and Biden (13 percent).

...and greater trust of McCain:

When asked which candidate they trusted more -- Obama or McCain -- respondents chose McCain over Obama, 49 percent to 41 percent. They also said they believe McCain is more likely to fulfill his pledge to lower taxes than Obama (41 percent to 31 percent).

So far, then, McCain's non-stop lying and adver-sleazements, and the media's coverage of them, doesn't appear to have prevented him from being seen as more trustworthy, at least in Ohio. Nor has Palin's non-stop lying prevented voter identification with her. Of course, the Obama campaign has only just started to sink money into ads hitting the McCain campaign on this front.

Southern Ohio is bascially an extension of West Viriginia. Obama, both Clintons, and Biden are going to have to work Ohio pretty hard along with the unions to pull out a victory here.

Flipping Ohio is the Obama campaign's most onerous task. They better work harder than pretty hard in Ohio.

user-pic

Don't forget Kentucky.

user-pic

It's the part of the state that likes Palin's religiosity and still thinks Obama's a Muslim.

user-pic

Not to mention, they've noticed he isn't a white guy.

I'm in Columbus, Ohio, myself. That should be solid Obama turf.

It's sad what these pennsyltuckian knuckledraggers are doing to the nation.

USA! USA! USA!

This is why the "McCain is lying" ads are so important. The only way McCain has any chance in this election is because he's not seen as a typical republican. Obama has to show that he is exactly that.

Biden said today "we've seen this movie before and the sequel is always worst than the original." They've got to sell that message!

Right on.

user-pic

It could backfire, McCain will roll out ads saying that "Empire strikes back" is an exception. But then the Dems will respond with "By the time McCain completes his first term, there's a good chance he will look like:" (and then they'll flash a Darth Vader picture.

Ok, sorry about the aside.

"This is why the "McCain is lying" ads are so important."

Yep and this poll was conducted before they started. Now that MSM has jumped on the "He's a liar" bandwagon, I suspect that the next poll in OH will be much, much different.

Ohio will be slow to catch up w/ the more current reporting from MSM that McConJOb is lying and Palin is a real threat...but I am more concerned about suppression tactics here in OHIO.

Heard a report the other day that basically implied that the long lines will be a problem again, although they do have early voting system in place.

user-pic

Yes, that is my concern as well!

Fortunately we have a Democratic Secretary of State now who isn't going to stand for any Republican nonsense.

user-pic

Steve, what is your guess as far as a "bigotry vote" in Ohio? I shouldn't have to ask such a question at all.... but will the repubs being trying to fuel that kind of fire in Ohio?

In the Cincinnati suburbs and in the Appalachian (southeastern) part of the state, it's a big problem. (I have some hopes for the latter because if the surprisingly close polls in WVa.)

Isn't the area around Miami University a hotbed of KKK activity?

You'll find the KKK around the Portsmouth area in south central Ohio. Near Miami University, in Oxford, Ohio, is the heartbed of the GOP in Ohio...Cincinnati, Middletown, Dayton....

I remember driving out there while in college to visit my then-girlfriend at Miami. Scary shit.

Yes, and the Republican racists in SW Ohio are merely a bit more genteel than the hicks in Portsmouth- they dispense with the white sheets.

If Ohio goes McCain, everyone who votes for him deserves to be out of work. What's their rationale? Gosh durn it, we don't need no stinkin' jobs! We don't need our homes to keep their value. We don't need health insurance. Just give us platitudes to feed our hatred of minorities and Muslims.

I think you mean "narrow lead," Greg.

Shouldn't it be a stastical tie (within the margin of error) or at least an insignificant lead? I'd go for "cling" somewhere in the title as well.

Greg, can you pull a "Eric" and do a "Narrow Lead" in Ohio?

user-pic

Rob Riggle (The Daily Show): "I want to elect a leader who is just like me, or worse."

Margin of error is 4 points.

I expect Biden/Palin debate to shake a few numbers.

Does anyone have any first-hand information on voter regestration and GOTV?

Also, Eric,Greg & Co, while we most appreciate your coverage, it would also be nice if you guys can talk to Obama camp operations mangers or those similar to ask a few questions on their efforts in the swing states.

They might give an alternative perspective to these polls.

Just to clarify, I believe "Likely voters" are folks that voted in the last two Presidential elections. Is this right?

So folks that are under 25 cannot be counted as likely voters? And newly registered folks are not "Likely voters"?

That's my understanding too. That's why I don't take any "likely voter" polls too seriously.

Actually, different polling companies operationalize it differently. That the universe is defined based on the event that hasn't happened yet is a big problem with election polls.

Not comfortable at all for McSleaze. He MUST win here, whereas Obama has multiple paths to 270 without Ohio.

And yes, got to keep hammering on McGigolo to drive his favorable / unfavorable down.

I still worry that there is a deep and emotional need in many moderate Americans where they can't bring themsleves to admit that John "POW" McCain is a liar. Patriotism runs in the veins of many Americans.

Still, I always liked John Edwards' line: It's time that we get patriotic about something other than war.

user-pic

These poor folks! They are in dire need. And willing to turn to the people least likely to help them!

That's what baffles me too. It's sad.

I worked in Ohio in the summer of 2004 for a congressional campaign. I was stationed in Canton, Ohio, and let me tell you, it's one of the worst places to live in America.

Hell on earth, basically, with a bunch of ignoramuses.

user-pic

Good god, so you're already convinced we're gonna lose and are using "the masses are asses" trope to justify yourself, eh?

All the "blame the idiots"-type drivel serves is the sagging egos of the pathetic, defeatist people who use it.

Maybe if Obama ran aggressively against NAFTA in an area rendered economically bereft by deindustrialization he'd be making a better go of it in Ohio. Selling yourself as "Republican Lite" on trade won't work in the rust belt. Just ask Sherrod Brown.

In the meantime, stop it with the "Americans are stupid" crap: it only reveals a lack of imagination and intellect.

I'm hoping that somebody gets the argument out there that Palin will have ABSOLUTELY ZERO influence on McCain's policies as VP.

She's there because she was the only way to get these rubes excited enough to vote in November. By the end of the McCain administration, she'll make Dan Quayle look more influential than Dick Cheney has been.

user-pic

By the time the election rolls around, the Palin-mania will be as good as dead. For McCain, he probably thinks it's a shame he couldn't roll her out during election week.

Considering McCain's health, if I were a rube I would be excited too.

If he lives that long, that is. Which doesn't seem like a good bet, given his age and health problems.

The Michigan in me says, "typical Ohio dip-shites".

Sincerely,
2000 and 2004

To somewhat reply to observations that Palin is driving McCain's numbers here in Ohio, it does make sense,,,,,, SE Ohio is West Va, and SW Ohio is Mississippi and Kentucky,, and NW Ohio is small town midwest. She comes off as small town treller trash, with typical attitude, and that does resonate.

The truly scarey thing about a Palin Presidency is that given how Dubya has aged in eight years,,,, check out the pic on HuffPost right now, and add eight years,,,,,,, four or less the way I see it, to the pic of McCain right next to Dubya. Now that is truly a motivator for us to bust major butt for Barach,,,, and the Republic.

Greg, stop stealing Eric's job! He's not going to have left anything to do if you keep reporting poll results.

user-pic

Can a motivated African American vote make a difference this time? Is it figured into the polls? Will it even happen?

user-pic

The Obama camp has been dowplaying his chances in Ohio and Florida all along. They have been quoted talking about paths to the presidency that do not include Ohio/Florida and focus much more on Virginia and the western states. My guess is that sometime in '07 their polling suggested that the easiest path to victory for Obama involved the Kerry + Iowa + Virginia or Kerry + Iowa + Colorado/New Mexico.

Of course, Obama is still fighting like heck in Ohio and Florida and that is smart. The wider net seems much more logical than the Kerry's Gore + Ohio or Florida strategy.

Forces McCain to campaign there as well. I have higher hopes for Florida than I do for Ohio. But Kerry closed in at the end in Ohio. Maybe there are some who would, when polled now, like to think of the good old days when you could be a single issue voter and not be putting a economic noose around your neck, but when the day comes in November will pull the lever for Obama.

"Of course, the Obama campaign has only just started to sink money into ads hitting the McCain campaign on this front."

This, coupled with the fact that this poll is about likely voters, is the key.

We have yet to see the results of Obama's latest ads and efforts... not to mention McCain's "the economy is fundamentally sound" blunder of earlier today.

Sure, it'll be close. But it won't reflect this poll.

user-pic

Suffolk polls are horribly unreliable. They are in Boston as missed the NH Primary by calling it for Romney and Obama the day before both lost. I would think Ohio is closer to the dead even that the entire country seems to be right now. So we must work hard to make a difference.

Ben

Checking 538's pollster ratings, Suffolk is at +2.21 (lower is better), worse than the average of +1.97. They're basically even with the CNN/Opinion Research polls (+2.22), EPIC-MRA (+2.17), and Zogby International (+2.16; Zogby Interactive is at +5.73).

Saying that their polls are bad because they missed NH isn't really fair, since almost everyone missed NH.

user-pic

This is an example of people aren't paying attention Even if elected McCain has a zero percent chance of getting his tax cut plan through a Democratic Congress.

user-pic

The poll also gives Obama a significant edge on which candidate is more likely to bring jobs back to Ohio.

Didn't we just see another poll on this same page that Ohio was basically tied? I've been concerned about the nature of Palin's appeal - emotional "like me" seems to make issues just disappear.

Obviously, if lying is critical to you as an indicator of trust than McCain is in trouble with you. BUT, I have said this before and it is borne out here: LYING DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE RIGHT. So long as People "identify" with Palin, she can lie all she wants. In fact, they will believe her lies about others and ignore your lies about her.

Apparently she knows this well. As does Rove. Bush.

So, my feeble insight into this only suggests that harping on her lies gets us nowhere because we are the only ones who give a rats ass.

If you want dirt then you have to be willing to get dirty - family, pedophilia, theft, damnation -I don't know that Ob can afford that, but i would bet that there is something dirty in there somewhere.

Short of that, Obama needs to learn how to bowl for starters.

There just aren't that many people who can identify with Obama. He is anything but common. That's what I like about him.

But Palin is as common as it gets and that's what common people want. No matter what, or in spite of, what anyone else says.

Greg, not to be too nit-picky, but Obama has a 4 pt lead in Va. and McCain has a 4 pt lead in Ohio. Why is your headline for Obama described as "takes a narrow" lead and for McCain it is "holds a lead". It's either Obama takes a 4 pt lead or McCain holds a narrow lead. Just sayin'

Because Eric did the VA thread and Eric sucks.

I guess rural folks are more interested in hunting a moose, than the US economy sinking to developing country status. Remember all those US jobs outsourced to China and India? Soon US citizens may be forced to emigrate en mass to developing countries to find jobs. Already there are a lot of US citizens working in record numbers here in Europe, a trend started 7 years ago...
Unfortunately for the USA, Moose hunters types will have difficulties finding a job overseas......

Give Ohio a week and I guarantee it will be a dead heat. Also, "likely voters" underrepresents younger voters and black voters, both huge groups for Obama.

4 points is very doable.

Be afraid McSame, be very afraid. The house of BS cards you built the past few weeks is falling apart.

user-pic

"Asked which of the four candidates is 'most like you,' 31 percent said Palin, followed by Obama (22 percent), McCain (21 percent), and Biden (13 percent)."

Who the fuck wants a president who is "like you" or ANYBODY you know personally? I want an exceptional person in the Oval Office, not some wacko hockey mom from bumfuck Alaska who reminds me of the people elected to the council in my hometown. (Which has a population of about 11K so it's actually bigger than Wasilla - and I don't want those people managing anything!)

I want somebody "most like" me to be my neighbor and my friend, not my fucking president or vice-president.

Lord help me - and us - if we elect Loony Tunes and the Angry POW because of the "have a beer with" factor.

And why the hell isn't Obama's middle class tax message getting through to these people? He does talk about it, like, all the time.

To the extent we're talking about the idiots, they live in another world where they would like to believe that all taxes are bad (except they want a military and the fire department to respond if their house is on fire, etc. etc). So they respond to McCain who implies (lies) about decreasing all taxes.

There is a hardcore libertarian streak in this country, which is one of the reasons we're going down the crapper right now.

user-pic

Yeah, I love the people who seem to forget that somebody and something has to pay for garbage pickups and roads getting paved and police protection and street signs and all that stuff we all take for granted. They also want, as you mentioned, a strong military and social security and unemployment insurance, etc. The "somebody" who pays for all this stuff is the American people and the "something" is taxes. But no, these people automatically think that their tax dollars are being sent directly to some crack 'ho so she can by some more rock and a bunch of bling.

Apparently, a lot of people.

Same people who elected Bush, TWICE.

Politico interviewed a psychologist who said:

"We've seen what happens when the average joe becomes president..."

To all you Fringeocrats: unless McCain bombs himself by doing something very stupid, Ohio and Florida are going to his column.

No 'voter suppression', no 'long lines', no 'sleazevertisements' are going to change that.

There's a new Quinnipac poll out in Ohio which makes clear that a LOT of people identify with Sarah Palin. And that while she basically hasn't said a damn thing, but repeat McCain's lines.

No matter what she says or does, she'll keep the popularity.

She could eat babies each night and people would still vote for her in massive numbers. It's the "oh she looks just like meeeee!" idiocy.

"Oh my gosh, she married her high school sweetheart too oooo my gosh!"

You guys really do get stuck in your sophomore-period, don't you!?

Why? Cuz most of you Yanks are incredibly stupid.

user-pic

I love that, per your analysis, the only way to win elections in this country is to play to the lowest common denominator and treat the election like it's a student council race. I'm not saying you're entirely wrong - that sadly is in the case in many parts of this country and with many people across all demographics. It's just so damned frustrating. Again, why the fuck would you anybody want to elect anybody who is "just like you" to the presidency or vice-presidency. How does that make any sense. Reach for mediocrity - yeah, that's the ticket.

Oh yeah, and: Your guy f*cked up. Get used to it.

Want to paint the White House Democrat? Then elect a gun-loving, ball-bearing women next time.

Pull your thumb out of your ass and go stick it in one your many leaking dikes, Dutch boy.

That's it- i'm canceling my trip to Amsterdam

Since I am in the Dayton area where the economic issue should resonate well with those DHL, GM Truck plant and other displaced workers, I can state that the Palin phenomena is only part of the picture. Yes, they love her because they see her as down to earth and tough, not afraid to fight. The wimp factor has been hurting Obama big time. I get sick of what I hear from so many other Democrats. How many times do you need to be hit with a club before you recognize who has been hitting you?

The Republicans have constantly played the tough man/woman card while calling the Democrats weak. We constantly respond with "We will win by taking the high road and by not descending to the same nasty depths." We are constantly losing with that theme and quite frankly, why the hell should anyone trust us to handle national defense or any other tough issue when we let the Republicans Bitch Slap us.

No, go after McCain/Palin in Ohio as liars. Mock Palin for avoiding the press and having to be tutored as a little child. Mock her commander in chief experience. Put her and McCain down and down hard. At the same time play up the god damned connection between McCain's lobbyist advisers and the economic problems in Ohio.

Christ, you people are fools.

A poll that asks the question to the respondent about whether or not a candidate is 'most like them' is by definition a slanted, biased poll. That's because it frames the whole issue of identifiability as being relevant to the election, which is a primary strategy in Republican presidential politics.

Boy, a lot of those Pollster.com and Intrade graphs along the right side of this page are depressing...

McCain's Social Security Privitization policies would be as disastrous as the failed investment banks and suffer the same fate. That is not change we can belive in and even Alan Greenspan said his $3.3 trillion dollar tax cut would be diastrous. This has to be said, over and over again, along with lies and dishonesty. No one wants to be lied too.

Bacalove said:
"No one wants to be lied too."

Yes you do. Well, maybe not you, but at least 51% of voters in your country do want to be lied to.

They're sooo incredibly naive. An elected guy in a nice suit on television says that tomorrow, the sky will be painted green.

"Weeeell, he's wearing a suit, he's an elected official, and he's on TV. That's gotta mean something, he probably knows what he's talking about!"

The love for S. Palin has proved the bankruptcy of the average American voter's intelligence. She hadn't said one word - not ONE WORD!!! - after she was appointed by McCain, and BOOM, there she went in the polls. Up, up, up! All that was needed was a series of photographs and video footage on TV.

Yet millions instantly 'felt' that they could connect with her.

And don't take this from me, please - just take it from voting history. 2000, 20004? Anybody...?
