Palin Falsely Suggests That McCain Is Reluctant To POW POW POW
Keeping track of all the falsehoods -- okay, "half-truths" -- coming from Palin is getting a bit dizzying. On the trail today in Virginia, Palin appeared to suggest that McCain would never, ever discuss his war service...
"Since my own running mate won't say this on his own behalf, I'm gonna have to say it for him," Palin said. "There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you. That man is John McCain."
Coming only days after McCain's convention speech, with its emphasis on his "scars," you really have to hold the reporters covering the event -- not to say the audience members themselves -- in very low regard if you're gonna try to slip one like this past them.

It'd be nice if some reporter from traditional media tallied up the number of times McCain said "I" in his acceptance speech.
They sure were hot to analyze the number of times Clinton said "I" a couple of months ago.
Maybe they'd notice that McCain actually talks about himself quite a bit, AND, he even mentions that he's a POW. Whoops. WAS a POW.
Actually, he still IS a POW, if you follow Brooks' reasoning: John, the Saint, is a prisoner of this campaign. He doesn't really intend to run all those slimy disgusting ads. He's forced to do it, because, you know, he was a POW, or something.

Of course Obama used "I" quite a bit in his own speech -- probably not nearly as much and definitely not in such a self-centered and backward looking way. The whole policy section repeated the words "I will" at least 6 or 7 times.
Again, the difference is one campaign is about issues affecting the country, while the other is about, well, celebrity.

Oh, you can run a counter on this, too, I've heard it in numerous clips.
Look, Palin is a first class bullshit artist, and she needs to be called out on it. They were all over McCain when he started to strain the noun, verb, POW thing. What happened? Some earlier suggested the press should boycott coverage (free PR and propaganda) if she won't make herself available for questioning.

McCain, a POW? Was he tortured? Did he give them the lineup of the Green Bay Packers, did he learn to love his country in the tiny cell that held him? Did he turn down an early release. Did they then torture him some more?
No. I've never heard that John McCain was a POW.
Are you sure your facts are straight?

This is really getting funny, because it hasn't been lost on very many people that until Sister Sarah showed up, McLame was POW POW POW all the time.
Not to mention all the POW at the convention.

I vote for moose anything.
I grew up in Alaska and I must say all this production over moose huntins cracks me up.
You want to know what moose hunting entails? First you have to get a permit, which is done via a lottery system.
Then you get in your truck and drive out the road until you see a moose.
Then you shoot the moose.
That is it. Moose have to be one of the dumbest creatures (excluding of course Republicans) on the face of the planet. And they taste f'n aweful. All gamey and tough, yuck.

The more I think about it, this chick is toast! No wonder they haven't let her go on her own and got her on a leash. She reads the teleprompter and still jacks it up.
When she starts talking, imagine the shit we are gonna have to work with?
If I were the republicans I would keep nursing this Palin bounce, keep her locked up in her cone of silence, people love her for reading the same speech 8 times now. She hasn't said once what she truly feels and believes.
When she does, GAME OVER.
She is like a new shirt, you wear it once it still smells and looks nice. After 8 times that things starts smelling and looking pretty funky. Especially after her two spills so far. She is gonzo.

"She is gonzo".
That's a logical assessment of this situation.
Unfortunately, though, the Republicans have a real talent for making the most atrocious choices and then convincing a majority of the people that those atrocious choices are really good for them. No matter how ludicrous the choice of Sarah Palin is, they'll continue to find a way to convince the public that she's actually the most qualified VP nominee ever.

You know, you just know, that when she's not seen with McCain, his advisors are prepping her for the debate--giving her cute one-liners, trying to set-up Biden, etc.
I've never seen anything like this. A VP candidate who won't talk to the press. She's just a heartbeat away and still she won't leave McCain's side.
Seriously, Obama has to quit mentioning her. Focus on McCain, not McCain/Palin.
When asked about Palin, he should say I'm running against John McCain. This election is about the direction of our country. McCain will give us four more years of Bush, which we, as a nation can no longer afford. We need to change course. If you want a stronger and more prosperous America, then vote for Obama/Biden.

Here's a question: back during the primaries Josh said over and over that TPM was not in the tank for any candidate and that picking a side simply wasn't the role of TPM. TPM is a "news organization" -- I believe that is how he put it. Did that only apply to Democrats? Because now that Josh is making campaign ads for Obama, it seems like his faux objectivity just went out the window.
I have nothing against the ads per se...just seems a bit hypocritical and duplicitous for an "objective news organization" to be creating campaign ads while pretending to be a "news organization."
And I think it really casts the primary coverage by TPM in a new light, i.e., when someone criticizes TPM's coverage they jump behind this "neutral news organization" shield, only to reveal it to be a convenient device a few months later.

Let's see what's happening on the world today:
The Chief of the Joint Chiefs says Afghanistan is in trouble. A scandal on the Dept. of Interior where sex, booze and drugs were exchanged for favors for Big Oil. Lehman Brothers is going down big time. Kim Jong-Il could be dead or incapacitated. Oil is almost below 100 bucks. 9/11 7th anniversary is tomorrow and Bin Laden hasn't been caught yet.
In a normal election campaign, these issues and more important affairs are the talk of the candidates, the parties and the pundits. But, today at 55 days before November 4th, what's the issue on the news? The meaning of "Lipstick on a pig"...
When Obama says "Enough is enough!", it's not just a call of attention to the shameful, despicable and empty campaign of McCain/Palin, who given the fact that they have no proposals to run on (except the "drill, baby, drill" BS and the call for a cultural war), they focus on a never ending flow of lies, distortions and fear mongering to scare the voters. It's also a call to the media for them to start to do their work.
With many problems that America is suffering right now, the attention should not be on word twisting, flag pins, interpretations of who can connect with voters, nasty rumors and other meaningless shit. Yes, I'm blaming in part the messenger (the MSM) because their lack of commitment for the public interest. By don't giving the information that the voters really need (the candidates plans to deal with the issues) and instead focus on the creation of the so-called narrative, like some bad reality show from VH1. This not just hurt some candidate or political position, this hurt democracy at its core and the base of the country in general.
The Agenda setting theory spoke of this, as resumed on this comment by media expert Bernard C. Cohen in 1963: "The press may not be successful much of the time in telling people what to think, but it is stunningly successful in telling its readers what to think about."
It's unbelievable that "The Daily Show" deals with news more deeply that CNN sometimes. The damage is done to the public by treating news only as feed to the pundits and avoiding to cover the larger themes in a serious manner. No wonder, the network news are falling on the ratings and the newspaper are losing ground to the blogs like TPM.
There is still time for the MSM to redeem themselves (except Fox News, they're fucked already) but I'm not hopeful on them. Maybe I'm wrong. Time will tell...

Like it or not, this is what gets talked about.
Remember Grover Cleveland? You know what the big story was when he was running for president? His illegitimate kid. There was a little rhyme going around: "Ma, Ma, where's my pa? Gone to the White House Haw Haw Haw."
I agree with you that things are in a mess. I think Obama keeps pulling the conversation back to that, too.
But it's really hard to get people off of something sexy and fun.

Oh that's rich. Palin though, isn't the first one who has pulled this stunt. I can't count the number of times I've heard McCain tell his story of being a POW, and it's almost always either preceeded or followed by somebody saying how he never likes to talk about it. I guess the campaign has decided that makes him more sympathetic.
I can't believe the number of falsehoods coming from these people. They way they tell it, it's like the entire McCain campaign exists in some sort of alternate universe...

>>>Actually, he still IS a POW, if you follow Brooks' reasoning: John, the Saint, is a prisoner of this campaign. He doesn't really intend to run all those slimy disgusting ads. He's forced to do it, because, you know, he was a POW, or something.
Well ..... He **was** forced to take a VP that wasn't the person he wanted, someone he didn't know much about (obviously!). And I just saw, on Hardball, the web ad that they put together about the lipstick comment and, like the 'kindergarten sex' ad, it was WAY, WAY over the line. Not something that McCain would have done in the past. (I think most people who know of his past campaigns would agree on that.) So what the hell HAS happened to him???
That's sort of rhetorical but sort of serious. Maybe he's just become evil because of the elixer of ambition. ---- Maybe he's simply "losing it" and isn't really aware what is going on in his campaign until it's done. ---- Maybe someone in the Rep party has something hot on him and is literally forcing him to hire the same people who wrecked his life and reputation just 8 years ago.
I don't know but it's a legitimate question when anyone changes their way of doing things so dramatically -- and the implications aren't good whatever the answer it. Suddenly bereft of moral principles -- doddering and borderline feeble-minded -- being blackmailed ....... none of these are something we want in the person who might become President. I don't think we should just scoff when people who've known him for a long time say that he's changed dramatically. Maybe we should listen and find out, or at least ask, why. If he's not in charge, for whatever reason, then who would the voters be electing in November?
There's a quite sad story out today (CANNOT find it again, damnit!) where Joe Biden is talking about his surprise at the techniques McCain is using -- how the same ones were used against John in SC and so viscious that Biden, a Gore supporter, offered to travel to SC and stand up with McCain to vouch (some word like that) for his character. It's hard to believe that something serious hasn't happened to bring about this big a change.
