Obama Optimistic About Bailout; Moderates Criticism Of McCain

Barack Obama had some tough words for McCain yesterday, decrying the injection of presidential politics into the bailout discussions. But today, with the general mood swinging in the direction of optimism, Obama moderated the criticism of his opponent.

Politico has the remarks Obama made a little while ago on his campaign plane:

"I am optimistic that we can get something done," Obama said aboard his campaign plane in Washington before taking off for Mississippi. "I think there is real progress being made this morning and last night. I think it is important that the markets seem to be staying relatively calm at this point.

"At this point, my strong sense is that the best thing I can do rather than inject presidential politics into these delicate negotiations is to go to down to Mississippi, and explain to the American people what is going on and my vision for leading the country over the next four years," Obama continued.

[...]

Asked if the White House meeting was a mistake, Obama said: "I'm not sure it was as productive as it could have been. But I think at this point it is important to move forward."

With the spin war now underway in earnest over whether McCain deserves credit for galvanizing talks or blame for endangering them in order to rescue his campaign, Obama is obviously not the ideal messenger for the latter point, which can be left to others.

If everybody hasn't realized it yet, America needs a smart and thoughtful leader. This is the guy. Class act.

user-pic

Ditto.

Second'd.

Smart and thoughtful? What happened to rash ideas and aiming for the lowest common denominator? I thought that's what this country needed.

I better get a new yard sign...

With ya bro!

I like the way Obama's responding. He's trying really hard to make this nonpartisan because that's the core of his message - bringing us together. I don't think another jab at McLame directly from Obama would make any difference to anyone right now. However, I do expect Obama's surrogates to keep right on making it clear that McLame did his best to politicize the whole thing.

Guess it's easy to be tactful when you have surrogates. Wish I had surrogates . . .

You know Tena,

Obama just earns more and more respect from me and hopefully the electorate too.

This man is having to wade through a sewer pipeline on his way to the WH.

Reminds me of Andy in Shawshank Redemption.

He has to stay above the fray, exude statesmanlike command of situations and absolutely refuse to get down in the gutter and brawl with this junkyard alleycats who want nothing but a street brawl.

obama understands if you lay down with dogs you get up with fleas!

I am so proud this man will represent this nation in the manor we have richly earned throughout the world with the exception of the past 8 years.

Hi White, Haven't heard from you in a while. Glad to have you back at TPM.

user-pic

Contrast these diplomatic remarks with that awful palaver that the McCain campaign put out. McCain continues to demonstrate how he's passed the Commander in Sleaze threshold, and Obama continues to demonstrate how he's passed the Commander in Chief threshold.

user-pic

I agree.

Still...

I'd like to see Obama try to get McCain to completely explode during the debate tonight. If he can just find the right way to (presidentially) call McCain the liar he really is, and ridicule his actions as not putting "country first" -- question the man's honor on national TV -- I think it could result in a full blown temper tantrum.

In which case it'd be game, set, and match.

I know it probably won't happen. But I can dream, can't I?

user-pic

O wouldn't that be rich?!

I hope he knows how to push McCain's buttons too!!

I was wondering if he might have done that yesterday at the WH.

The news reports immediately following that meeting described it as contentious...then I heard folks say their was screaming and yelling later on!

Tee hee....

"I'm not sure it was as productive as it could have been. But I think at this point it is important to move forward."

I find this refreshing, willfully choosing not to get down to the 8th grade level with McLiar. Obama now has David Letterman, and that megaphone has no "off" switch.

Perfect pitch and substance. Like pretty much everything else in his campaign.

Aside from the unsurprising chorus of support from Fox and his friends on the right, I think most Americans are seeing McCain's stunt for what it was. The hysterical lowering of the bar this morning -- "progress" on getting everyone to the table?! -- stands in stark contrast to his promise to suspend the campaign to demonstrate his prowess as a leader by coming to Washington to ensure this thing got done. Obama doesn't need to make that case -- McCain and the most responsible news organizations (i.e. not Fox) are doing that for him.

user-pic

Hysterical is the operative word here. And it's not just characteristic of his stunt today. It is characteristic of the man. And disqualifies him from high office.

The more McCain flails around trying to show "leadership" the more unflappable and wise Obama looks to the American people.

Keep it up McCain. You don't need Palin to make you look like a joke. You do it so well all by yourself.

The current Republican Party is built on the foundation of 'Reagan era republicanism' free markets, deregulation and dog-eat-dog capitalism. This message has been drilled into us for the last 30 years. Congresman Shelby 'et all' truly believe that painfull lessons are an integral part of the free market. What would a depression (long painfull recession) look like today? The population did not suffer equally during the great depression, the poor and the elderly suffered immensely but I don't think we'll see any wall street executives jumping out of the windows this time around. American culture is very different than it was in the 30's. If you think the middle east has problems with hordes of young unemployed men wait until you see 25% unemployment in this country. Should I take my money out of my 401k? Will a systemic failure overwhelm the FDIC? Make no mistake, Republicans would love to see this bailout (rescue) plan fail but only after it's passed by the Democrats. It's the only way to justify their existence.

During his brief presser after yesterday's White House political ploy, you could see Obama was pissed by what he'd just witnessed, but he kept his head and his tongue in check in a refreshingly presidential manner.

Tonight, I think that simmering anger will appear again, just enough to force McCain on the defensive. And once that happens, step away from your TV and watch McStain's head explode.

He seems to be about 30 seconds away from calling someone a c***. Everyone seems to have this strange sense he might rip off his mike at some point and go ballistic, which means that the 'John McCain is no longer the man he used to be' narrative has taken hold for good.

Once again Obama responds the way I thought he should. There are plenty of media outlets, including the blogosphere, to get the message out how unhelpful McCain was. He is right not to jump into the blamestorming but instead look forward.

BTW: There are lots of emails going to conservatives, including from the McCain campaign itself, painting a whole different picture of how the meeting in Washington went. The gist is that McCain presented a coherent argument while Obama jumped in and started arguing partisan politics causing a shouting match that broke the meeting up. That's life inside the bubble for you.

Have you seen any of these emails? Can you post? Because that would be utterly incomprehensible to me -- particularly since McCain's own campaign says he "listened carefully" (read: said nothing) during the meeting!

user-pic

Yeah, trying to pin the "drama" on Obama.... boy, that's a stretch!

Rovian tactic... always brand your opponent for the names you, yourself, deserve!

However, I think McStain doesn't understand the fundamentals of the fundamentalist. To them, Mormonism is a cult, not a Christian religion. I can see why you think that, but I have to say that I consider it unlikely. Who else would he put in her place at this point? Who wants to climb on board the Titanic just as the fifth of the forward compartments starts to fill with water? Meanwhile, Palin is the only thing holding him up in places like GA and IN. If he replaces her to staunch the losses in FL or MO or VA, he could end up simply causing new losses to emerge elsewhere. Interesting that the Republicans are the ones suggesting that there is too much money being given to the bailout and are willing to go slow until the Dems/Obama don't give away the store.

Most posters here would seem to favor the Republicans' POV on the bailout.

Strange days indeed.

The GOP "alternative" makes no commercial sense, which is why it was immediately shot down not just by Dems, but by the Administration (Paulson) as well. There needs to be a capital infusion to loosen the credit crisis, and insurance offers no short-term change in liquidity. I wouldn't expect everyone to understand that, but I'm glad there are reasonable and responsible people on the Hill that do. Too bad that doesn't include ideological House Republicans or John McCain, who is clearly way out of his intellectual league here.

McCain/Palin '08: The Only Way to Win Is Not to Play...

It's a screenshot of an official McCain/Palin ad, on a website yesterday, that declared him the winner of the debate. Yesterday.

I think Obama will do well tonight. He doesn't need to convince the die-hard Republicans--the ones who would vote GOP no matter what.

I sense Obama is connecting with those who have seen John McCain's erratic behavior, particularly in the last few days, and wondered, "Would I trust this person to run a small business or school, let alone the United States government?"

Pundits who are opining, "Why isn't Obama leading by more?" need only remember 1980. People weren't happy with Carter, but Reagan didn't close the deal until people felt comfortable with him--that he wouldn't be reckless or show bad judgment.

In the past few days--and throughout this campaign really--Obama has shown himself to have the temperment, resolve, and judgment to be president, head and shoulders above McCain. In fact, McCain has highlighted this difference by his own hotheaded, drama-queen stunts. Obama has had only to be himself.

Seconded.

I hope Mccy will have to skip nap time before the debate . . .

I think that Obama should make the observation that a leader whose first impulse in times of crisis is to open his mouth and act is not demonstrating strength. S/he needs to sit still, keep their own council and listen to all sides of the complicated issues before deciding on a course of action. The days when the warrior king led from the tip of the phalanx are long past.

This is not one of the leadership qualities that the Navy looks for in their admirals and it is not something that we should seek in our civilian leaders either.

John McCain has clearly channeled his inner drama queen.
