Obama Campaign: McCain "Would Rather Lose His Integrity Than Lose An Election"

The Obama camp has just unleashed one of its toughest hits on McCain's character yet, signaling a newly aggressive effort to hammer McCain's supposed honor and integrity over the lies and adver-sleazements that have come to dominate his campaign.

An Obama spokesperson just blasted out a statement comparing McCain's current campaign to the infamously despicable 2000 campaign run against him in South Carolina -- true fighting words -- and adding that McCain "would rather lose his integrity than lose an election."

The broadside comes in response to McCain's rather astonishing appearance today on The View, where he personally faulted Obama for using the common phrase "lipstick on a pig."...

Obama "chooses his words very carefully," McCain said. "He shouldn't have said it."

McCain, when confronted by his hostesses about the fact that he too used the phrase to describe Hillary's health plan, said he'd merely been talking about her plan. Obama was talking about McCain's policies when he used the phrase.

Here's the full response from Obama spokesperson Hari Sevugan:

Today on "The View," John McCain defended his campaign's latest ad campaign, which has been debunked repeatedly as both false and sleazy. In running the sleaziest campaign since South Carolina in 2000 and standing by completely debunked lies on national television, it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election.

I guess this must be that new sharper tone the Obama campaign has been promising.

Nice! This is the way you pick a fight with McCain. Hammer him on integrity and honor, and wait for him to hit back too hard. He will overreact.

Yes!

And this video shows how you take on lying republican surrogates!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq7Nyddt9QU

I'd never heard of Ari Melber before this, but someone needs to pin a medal on this kid. He and Rachel Maddow are the only liberals out there bringing serious hardware to this fight.

God bless them.

Holy Cow! This Melber guy is note perfect. He should be on the air at every opportunity. Finally, we hear the word LIE used forcefully and directly.

This is exactly right.

More Melber!

We can expect a red-faced, Rumplestiltskin McCaca moment one of these days.

It will probably be in the form of McCain indignantly defending Palin's "integrity" with one of his unbelievable lies, and he will get angry because no one believes him any more and the media refuses to give him a pass every time he lies...

Bullshit. Press releases are bullshit. I live near Philadelphia PA, and my television is SATURATED with McCain commercials.

Time to start spending that money I gave him. If this turns in to another Kerry deal, I'm taking a fucking hostage.

Maybe you need to give more money.

If I legally could, I would.

I agree with this. Ads are the way to go.

I'd like to hear the Obama campaign pick up on the "liar" theme and hammer it home. Do Americans really want another president who lies to them repeatedly?

I'm still waiting for a consistent line of attack from the campaign. Maybe they will launch it soon. Do they need more money?

Your right -- hammer on his honor. He's festishistic about his honor and his 'anger control' posture kicks in visibly when his honor is seriously challenged. He'll eventually blow a gasket -- look out when he does!

user-pic

Give him a lot of line. Pay it out... Then reel it in... slowly. And just wait... keep reeling... till he loses it!

I think honor is the way to go. We have to turn McCain's own words against him:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARpXpzIDP98

It's about time. Turning one of McCain's lines against him is a good way to McCain. The only did is that mccain lied and Obama isn't.

Now put of into an ad. How about one that talks about "McCain the consulate Washington insider" who's got a team of lobbyist runniing his campaign who "will stop at nothing to keep your government from working for you." then you can show the wolves (lobbyist) on the prowl.

Obama wants to change the tone but has to prove he can defend himself but people will believe he can defend them. He needs to wrap his message of change with images that evoke an emotional response.

Your right -- hammer on his honor. He's festishistic about his honor and his 'anger control' posture kicks in visibly when his honor is seriously challenged. He'll eventually blow a gasket -- look out when he does!

Yes, that's nice, Hari. NOW PUT IT IN A FUCKING AD. Thank you.

DAMMIT! YES, put it in an ad! No one remembers a press statement more than 6 hrs. after it's issued!

actually a press statement doesn't even last as long as the average act of sexual intercourse. So unless you are Sting or some other tantric holy man, 6 hours is being generous.

YES! Press releases are nice, but we need EFFECTIVE ads even more.

The three released this morning were terrible.

Absolutely. I am still waiting for a clear, consistent line of attack against McCain. A solid, targeted ad campaign.

I've seen almost NO Obama ads on TV, and the one's I have seen were bland and forgettable.

He needs some ads with punch; ones that will sink in.

What is the money situation?? Is there a problem there, as implied in a NY Times article a few days ago?

I'm in California too and there are few ads because will win our state. What I want to know is ..

When will the PALIN BOUNCE turn into the PALIN BURST? Does anyone have good news from the polls coming up?

E-mail Hari at hsevugan@barackobama.com!!!

user-pic

It needs to be in an ad, I agree. Even if they never air it, it still needs to be in an ad.

And they need another ad airing everywhere the McCain "Sex Ed" ad aired asking how much money McCain recieves from NAMBLA and why McCain is so vehemently pro pedophilia.

Right, one of those ads that are made just for the internet and the media, who will run it in full and talk about it --for free!

user-pic

You know the "Daisy Ad" only aired one time and it is the most famoust political ad of all time?

Let's face it; McCain loves the idea of people having sex with kindergardners, why else would he oppose the bill his sex ed ad talked about?

Now maybe this is because he was abused as a child and maybe it is because he is paid to defend the NAMBLA crowd. The why of it doesn't matter, but the parents of America need to be warned - A vote for McCain is a vote for your 6 year old to be fondled by old, grey haired perverts.

THANK YOU!

These "statements" the campaign burps out to the press have little or no effect, IMO. You need to tell the people this, not just the press. Do it on ESPN during the big game. Do it on Fox Noise. Do it wherever people who need to hear these things happen to be.

Otherwise, we have the ultimate stealth candidate running for Vice President on the GOP side. That woman (who should remain nameless AFAIK) cannot lead the nation; it will be up to whichever Dick Cheney clone (or Cheney himself if she thought she could get that one through the Senate confirmation process) she picks to take the #2 spot if, God forbid, something should happen to The Maverick (TM).

McCain "Would Rather Lose His Integrity Than Lose An Election"

Good line, just like the one related to his honor.

Now, I want ads about those lines, damn it!

user-pic

Patience is a virtue.

(which mcSham has not got....)

Fuck. When I saw this headline I thought this was going to be a new ad.

Yeah, it doesn't have the punch unless it comes in the form of an ad. That's how McCain has controled the narrative. If they're going to say this they need to put it in a 30 second clip.

Pufferfish

user-pic

Exactly, I assumed the same thing.

user-pic

Patience.... Patience... you don't want to jump the gun... let it simmer a bit... then pounce!

user-pic

You are wise indeed.

Bwahahaha Great! Humor, snark, truth all in one neat pile :-)

McCain "Would Rather Lose His Integrity Than Lose An Election"

Good line, just like the one related to his honor.

Now, I want ads about those lines, damn it!

Please, help with the server.

user-pic

Calm down. Just wait...

I like that they reference SC 2000. I think a lot of people might not know about that.

i wish they'd point specifically to the fact that he's hired all the people that deliberately smeared his family during that campaign, that sure says something about the importance of integrity vs. winning.

The surrogates will point that out, I would imagine.

Will it all pay off? I certainly hope so. I'll be a part of the echo chamber for a moment and repeat: make it an ad. Get it out there. Make it known. Make it so no one can ignore it, no one can brush it aside.

Have I seen a pattern where the Obama spokespersons talking points are a preview of what's to come? I think I remember someone here mentioning this a while back...?

I hadn't thought about it, but since you mention it... It certainly seems like it could be the case. I hope to Allah you're right, and that Obama releases an onslaught against McCain with this.

Queue "POW" countdown....

Bring it on. Obama out to make McCain play the POW card, and play it, and play it, and play it, until it means nothing at all to the public. Devalue it and McCain is left with nothing at all.

Obama *ought* to make . . .

user-pic

Remember, McCain also laughed when one of his supporters called Hillary at bitch.

Hopefully this is just the start of the smacking back. That line needs to be put in radio and TV ads. It may even get under McCain's skin if its repeated enough.

It's disappointing that up until now the ladies on The View have asked the toughest questions about what those ads.

user-pic

I think we ladies may save the day this election cycle!

Perfect! I tell ya, I've had highs and lows with this campaign (last weekend was VERY bad), but I am now convinced: Obama really knows what he is doing. We are going to win.

Yes, good line.
I'm beginning to wonder, though, whether he knows that he's lying. Is he that good at lying with a straight face? Or, is something wrong? Like, for example, he believes what Palin tells him and is completely unaware that she's lying.

He knows. Everybody knows.

It doesn't matter. It should; but it doesn't.

user-pic

You know, I'm sick of folks twisting themselves into a pretzel to excuse McCain's blatant lies! The man has been caught lying repeatedly yet everyone, including folks like Carville and Matthews, says he must not know it. Give me a break.

If he doesn't know he's lying that's even worse because it means the old dude is senile!!

user-pic

We are all avoiding the truth - McCain really is senile, has lost touch with reality, and believes the lies he signs on to, as well as those he tells daily.

If this offends anyone, try this alternative: McCain holds America in contempt, probably for letting him rot in a Vietnamese prison for 5 years, so he selected a totally unqualified piece of arm candy as the person to be within a hearbeat of the presidency, and he believes we are all so stupid we will believe the most outrageous lie he can dream up. If elected you can be sure he will stop at nothing to bring harm to the country he hates so much.

user-pic

PUT.

IT.

IN.

AN.

AD.

Thank you!

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

Do you think they should put it in an ad?

People who complain about this, however justifiably, are failing to realize one salient fact:

It is useless to expose McCain as a recidivist liar. Everyone, including his most ardent supporters, already knows he's lying. They know Sarah Palin is not qualified to be Vice President. The McCain campaign is now geared toward one objective, and that is to provide the American people with enough cover so that, when they reject Obama, no one will be able to say with certainty that the choice wasn't motivated solely by race . . . which, of course, is what it will be.

user-pic

I disagree. There are some swing voters who believe that McCain is an honorable man. Why shouldn't they since the Obama campaign says it every time they mention him.

But many independents think that John McCain has integrity. They're thinking of the 2000 McCain, not this lying sack of shit who just sold his soul for 30 electoral votes.

user-pic

Obama has to go after McCain's "integrity," he has to hit him hard as a corrupt liar.

And here's another ad he should run, tying Palin’s cluelessness, flaws, dangers, etc must all be tied back to McCain.

Clip of McCain saying “My friends, there will be more wars.”
Clip of McCain singing “Bomb bomb bomb Iran.”
Clip of McCain saying 100 years in Iraq is okay with him.
Clip of McCain saying “It’s not important when the troops come home.”
Clip of Palin saying she’s cool with going to war over former Soviet republics.
War with Russia??! Over South Ossetia? Uzbekistan?!
Voice and tag line: IS THIS THE FUTURE YOU WANT?

The problem is that, within their heart of hearts, this is the future far too many Americans want.

Did the last eight years teach us nothing? Don't we know an electorate on a suicide course when you see one?

Add: "yes, we may have to consider a draft"

Wow.... check out this heartbreaking 527

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQobIUE1zTU

This really makes me hate this woman, not just disagree with her policies.

Twice now I have seen when McCain is confronted by questions surrounding the lies and dirty politics of his campaign, McCain rationalizes it by suggesting that if Obama had accepted his invitation to do joint townhall meetings, the tenor of the campaign might be different. That may or may not be true, but that's not the point. Because Obama didn't accept the invite, it doesn't give McCain the right to lie to the Ameican people and malign Obama's record.

McCain's rationale is similar to that of the schoolyard bully who argues that he wouldn't have hit a fellow student if the student would have just given him his lunch money on demand. The bully is attempting to make himself the victim, while painting the student at fault for causing the bully hit him.

Yep. And when you offer an excuse for lying, you've already lost the game. It doesn't matter what people think of your excuse.

It's more like the Mob providing "protection" to small businesses.

Because Obama didn't accept the invite, it doesn't give McCain the right to lie to the Ameican people and malign Obama's record.

Agree. The frustrating part is that both times he's done this, the interviewers have not called him on it.

So why don't people press him on this? Yes, the gals on The View did a better job than the MSM hacks but they still let him get away with that. I've never understood how he gets away with this. If Obama doesn't play by your rules, you are justified for going negative on him? The two things don't have anything to do with eachother. It's the lamest argument ever and he just keeps repeating it.

Folks, if someone says "you're lying," and you reply "well, I had to, because of X"

that is in no way a net win. You just admitted that your attacks on the opponent are lies! I'm glad they moved on to the next issue, because that one was already in the bag.

user-pic

McCain hasn't gone negative, dude, he's gone new-kew-lar. Scorched earth.

Huffington's right: Obama need to do the righteous indignation thing. Bigtime.

It's almost like McCain's. . . PUTTING LIPSTICK ON A PIG!

Sorry--couldn't resist, even though it doesn't exactly fit. . .

At one point on The View he said that if Obama had accepted his offer to do community forums, the campaign wouldn't have sunk to this level. What a putz.

He's said it several times now. It appears to be their new talking point in deflecting criticism about their disgusting campaign.

McCain/Palin: “But officer, did you see what she was wearing?”

precisely

Like everyone else, I'd like to see some better ads.

But if we can make the whole national conversation about "Has, or has not, John McCain lost his integrity?" -- that would be even better than an ad. To do that, we need to get some surrogates out there repeating this line, and I very much hope that's part of the plan.

The attack on "honor" and "integrity" has been a theme all week. I think it's significant that the Obama people have shifted from "honor" to "integrity." When they went after "honor," McCain could pretend to take it as a slur on his service. (Stupid, I know, but two months ago apparently we entered The Universe of Stupid, and that's just how the laws of physics work here.) "Integrity" is a better choice -- harder for him to brush off.

Notice also the way Obama is trying to keep this discussion tied to today's episode of The View. If McCain takes this bait, it means we've got a news cycle where the talking heads are replaying some rather unflattering clips of McCain. And if he doesn't take the bait, he's a wuss who's lost his integrity.

user-pic

Hey Mr. Y chromosome, what was your take on the Palin interview, anyway?

Yes, as you know, my Y chromosome has been arguing with me about Sarah Palin's qualifications. I'll say "she's a shallow zealot," and my Y chromosome will reply "in a fur coat." We get nowhere.

But last night, my brain told me, "This woman is a clear and present danger to the nation."

And when I checked with my Y chromosome, it just grumbled, "and she's sitting too close to Charlie Gibson."

So, I think I can speak for both of us when I say that we're over Sarah Palin.

Couldn't happen to a more honorable guy. With great integrity, too! :P

user-pic

This statement isn't for us, the voters. It's for the political media. They're trying to game the refs into repeating the assertion. They've waited for the media to start to come to this conclusion, now they're priming the pump for more recognition of this. Maybe we'll hear Wolf ask "Do you think it's true that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose this election?"

Which, by the way, is unanswerable, politically. If the answer is "yes", John McCain looks like a sleaze. If the answer is "no", John McCain looks like he's a wuss who doesn't want the election badly enough.

Anyone looked at 538 today? We need to get our asses in gear NOW!

user-pic

I am beyond proud of my sistahs!!! LOL!!!!

That was awesome - he was surrounded. LMAO!

Those yentas are obnoxious. I doubt that once the cameras are off anyone could stand to be in the same room with them.

Net: backfire.

Net: Score Obama

Right. You're the perfect judge because you're so totally in "The View's" demographic.

PUT THAT LINE IN AN AD!

PLEEEEEEEEZE!

If Obama's campaign is ballsy enough to say it in a press release, they should put it in an ad. Because no one (aside from the press and we wonky types) hears, reads or pays one bit of attention to these campaign statements.

Ooooh a statement! That will really scare McCain's camp and get a lot of publicity! Gimme a break.

Dear Mr. Plouffe,

Put. It. In. An. Ad.

Finally, some real push back. Now they need to do what McCain camp is so good at. repeat it over and over at each opportunity to keep it in the news cycle.
This is what will hurt McCain. Showing his honor/integrity is long gone.

lipstick on a pig?

foreign policy experience = sucking up to big oil

lipstick on a dipstick

Or you can just get rid of the "ipst" like they do at the department of the interior.

I love this bit - it has to go in an ad somehow: "He chooses his words very carefully. Senator Obama chooses his words very carefully..." With the implication, of course, that John McCain doesn't - exactly what we want from the leader of the free world, the man with his finger on the nuclear button: someone who doesn't put any thought into what he's saying!

The underlying (overlying???) theme with wingers is honor vis-a-vis his POW status. This is what the talking heads have so much trouble getting their minds around. More than anything else, except the economy, is this gut-level reaction to a POW vs. a pointy headed librul.

WE know he's lost his honor but middle America is just waking up to this fact (or the alarm clock hasn't rung just yet) and getting *them* to see it just flies in the face of what they think he's about. IE; "a POW HAS to have honor, doesn't he?"

I think thats going to be a hard sell...

"integrity" stupid...

user-pic

I don't think this statement is for voters.

It's for the political punditry.

And if voters keep hearing "McCain has really sunk low. McCain keeps lying. McCain seems to have lost his way", etc, THAT might be effective against the POW story.

I agree. I was jumping ahead to a *possible* ad campaign...sorry for the confusion.

This is too Priceless!

McCain: Mayors & Governors Do Not Have National Security Experience! Then why did he give us Sarah Paliin?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzhFDQIgGSg

I know a lot of people think the sky is falling but I think this has been a great week for Obama. McCain has exposed himself as a blatant liar and the press is actually calling him on it. And Palin has is starting to show that she is woefully unprepared to be VP. The polls might be close now but McCain is on very shaky ground with several weeks to go.

Yes, I agree. I just hope seven weeks is enough to expose that and change the dynamic. The Repubs have come out from hiding. I fail to see how Sarah Palin makes them comfortable calling themselves Republicans again but there you have it.

user-pic

I agree completely.

I think it's been a great week to be a Democrat, period.

Where is the Gun?

now obama is unleashing the fire out on mccukoo and his campaign team,he needs to blast the media as well for interviewing all white racist trailer trash in west virginia, kentucky, pennsylvania as well to,why doesnt the media start interview smart open minded white people young and old thats lookin 4 change and doesnt judge a person by the color of their skin, blast mccain camp as all of karl roves racist divisive fearmongerin disciples, blast the white racist trailer trash sarah palin for makin fun of community organizer along wit racist mitt romney, guliani and fred thompson, blast mccain for callin his drug addict millionaire wife a cunt

At least we don't have to listen to another McCain apologist saying that he's not on board with his campaign and the bullshit ads they've been putting out.

Yes, I'm looking at you Chris Matthews and James Carville....

Thank god, put in an ad, run it in battlegrounds, a clip of McCain lying, and then evidence to prove he's lying. There's nothing they could say to that, they'd have been effectively called out. The media won't do it, the campaign has to do it, forcing the media to cover it.

My 2 cents:

"The Republican Party did to John McCain what the Viet Cong could not: They broke him. They maverick has become the lackey."

[roll clips of McCain, flip-flopping.]

He shoots, he scores! Unfrickinbelievable!

He shoots, he scores! Unfrickinbelievable!

from a Dave Chappelle skit:

"Dee kads don't lie!!"
[of course, in a proper 'phoney-baloney Jamaican accent'...]

Yeah, that's great. Unless you put it in a campaign ad, it will go nowhere. Begin saturation bombing.

I think it would be more powerful if Obama said;

"I'd rather lose with integrity than lead America without it".

"Lose" is not and will not be a part of Obama's vocabulary from here on out...

Fucking A!

I don't know if I agree with that. I think there may be something there. Obama says to the American people that he will not lie and misrepresent McCain's image, that he wants to have an honest discussion about issues that face Americans and if Americans choose McCain, then so be it. But let it be on issues like health care and foreign policy and not who is the better mudslinger and controversy fabricator.

I just have to believe the Obama camp has a plan here. I don't know what it is but Obama is no Kerry.

user-pic

James Carville, Chris Matthews, Mike Barnacle, Andrea Mitchell, etc., are you watching? Still want to say McCain doesn't know what's going on in his own campaign?

They need no further proof than that. He repeated the bullshit himself. He owns it.

He knew it. He approved it. He just blew it.

Can someone answer something for me?

I live in Minnesota (considered a fairly safe Obama state even with the Republican Convention here). All I see are McCain ads on TV; very few Obama ads. It's been that way for a month. I thought Obama had the monetary advantage, yet see little in TV advertising here.

Does anyone see it being fairly even or advantage Obama as far as TV ad time anywhere else? I understand investing in the ground game, but people that are still undecided are heavily swayed by TV ads more than anything else, and it seems to be one-sided from what I see here.

user-pic
but people that are still undecided are heavily swayed by TV ads more than anything else, and it seems to be one-sided from what I see here.

I'm not so sure of that - do have any data to back up the claim that TV ads are more effective than anything else?

I don't watch that much TV but when I do watch local news, for every McLame spot, an Obama spot runs right next to it.

McCain had to spend all of his pre-convention money before Sept. 1st, so he saturated the airwaves with his 'celebrity' dreck. Barack was sinking his pre-general election cash into the ground game/GOTV campaign in the various swing states. We will see more ads for Obama from now on.

Now that's what I'm fucking talking about! More pleez!

Don't know if you guys have seen Obama's new Ad on Huffpo attacking Palin/McCain on Lobbyists. Best of this cycle.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/12/obama-ad-calls-out-mccain_n_125995.html

Hey, no, I hadn't seen that one! Pretty good, I think. It reworks some material from the one that came out Monday, but it's a good theme, and more of it won't hurt. I especially like the end.

I am 35 years old and have followed politics closely for most of my life (at least 25 of those years and this is the most devestating Democratic ad I have ever seen! What the hell are we waiting for? I will contribute to get this on the air!!!

I'm glad to hear this. Call the pig a pig.

But the question that remains unanswered is why losing one's integrity actually gains them points in the polls?

Shouldn't everyone be smart enough to see this?

Makes me worry greatly for the future.

user-pic

I think Rove told the McCain camp to lie about everything, about himself, about Palin, about their records; and this would give him just enough voters who would think that no one would lie the way they are.

Rove to McCain; the more we do to them the less they believe we're doing it.

Hide it in plain sight.

i think the meme needs to be that McCain is a broken man. such an attack puts him on the defensive, forcing him to prove otherwise.

you establish that McCain for all his maverick ways has been broken by the republicans, the same way that New Orlean was, the same way that the economy was.

you praise him for his six years in Hanoi and the strength that took and you damn him for the last six years and the cowardice that took. you get under his skin and you deconstruct him from the inside. you make him the symbol for what is wrong with America and hang it around his neck.

user-pic

OK, here's what I don't get: Why would anyone want someone who was a POW to be president?

Get it?

There has got to be some way to work that angle and if it is worked it would take McCain right out. Strike at the heart of his strength.

This integrity business is a small part of working that angle.

I've already heard salt-of-the-earth working stiffs, Vietnam-vet age, mutter that McCain got shot down and captured BECAUSE of his own ineptitude. Another way to work the angle.

There has got to be a hundred ways to go at it.

Nope. Absolutely wrong, IMO. Being a POW has NO bearing on fitness for the highest office in the land and if you put forth what you are saying, it will backfire completely.

McCain uses it because its all he has but his itegrity from just 8 years ago has been shot to shit-THAT is the point. Just use his own statements and voting pro-Bush 90% of the time against him.

user-pic

Yeah, I get what you're saying. But I tell you there's an undercurrent of concern that this guy's not quite right. Obama can't say anything, of course, but wing nuts on the left (ahem, present company excepted) could start the meme.

I was pretty surprised when I heard that thing about him being shot down because he disobeyed orders.

I see the "back firing" like Willy Horten backfired. Only this time there should be legitimate concern.

OK, I'll fade back into the background. I fully realize that there are a lot of good arguments that could be put forth against my idea: High road and all that.

For. The. Win.

Hey TPM'ers.

How about this: let's challenge the Obama-Biden campaign to run this ad. With what money? Well, let's start a page at my.barackobama.com to raise money exclusively for this ad. We get pledges.

We challenge Obama-Biden people: if we can raise $5000 for the ad, you can spend $500,000 running it.

or something.

I'd still prefer "Would rather lie until he's blue in the face than lose an election."

And for the love of god, put something in an ad!

user-pic

I think I just decoded McCain's lie today on The View. He was saying that as Governor she vetoed any earmarks that the Alaska state legislature put into the state budget -- he wasn't talking about the federal earmarks.

I think.

and I have no idea if it is true or not.

hey tpm'ers!

how about we challenge the obama-biden people to put this ad up?

how do we do it? set up a group at my.barackobama.com and make pledges to give money if the O-B campaign promises to run an ad taking on mccain's character like this.

we tell them something like, "we'll each pledge $X to you guys making a big ad buy with this ad in key stats." if they agree, we release the $$, if not, then we don't.

It's a legitmate claim but more importantly it puts Obama in control of the message.

Now he can wag ol' McDog any way he likes.

I LOVE THE LINE!! Let's all put it in our signatures:

"it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election"

Wouldn't a press release with a quote like this make it onto the cable "news" blabberfest?

I wish some interviewer would straight up ask

McCain, so, because Obama wouldn't do town halls with you, you now think it's OK to be a lying sack of shit. Why is that Senator McCain?

McCain was called out on The View and then he had to lie. He knew he was lying. We knew he was lying. He knew that we knew he was lying. Still, he did it. What code of honor does that fall under?

Then there's Sarah. I read this today: How can she be ready to be the Vice President when she wasn't even ready for Charlie Gibson?

They need to tie it to the issue of trust. Josh hit it on the front page. How can you trust someone who lies this easily? How can you trust someone who changes his positions to curry favor with the right wing? Whose first instinct to every conflict is to use force? Who admittedly doesn't know squat about the economy? And who, despite constantly boasting about his own independence and honor, voted 90 percent with Bush? Can you trust that this person takes your best interests at heart? They need to wrap everything together in one neat package. Maybe trust is it.

Huffo reports leak that Obama Liar Ad ready

The Soft Sound of a Bugle in the Background Playing Taps...

This week as we remember all that we have lost from 9/11 to Afghanistan to Iraq to Katrina's aftermath, we've also lost something else that Was Once a National Treasure - John McCain's Character & Integrity.

Another National Tragedy Brought to You By Karl Rove & Co.

Had Enough??

McCain was called out on The View and then he had to lie. He knew he was lying. We knew he was lying. He knew that we knew he was lying. Still, he did it. What code of honor does that fall under?

I think they confuse a "quick study" with someone who studies too quickly -- and retains too little.

user-pic

I read someone who wrote that we expect the candidate to know more than the interviewer. Which made her think Palin should be dumped in favor of somebody from the press, who knows more!

I wish some interviewer would straight up ask

McCain, so, because Obama wouldn't do town halls with you, you now think it's OK to be a lying sack of shit. Why is that Senator McCain?

The irony is that he probably thought the "lil ladies" on the View would give him soft ball questions. Who's sexist now?

You know, I agree that they should put that line in an ad. But, I'd rather see Obama come out with strong ads about his tax proposals, which, for some reason, people don't know about. I think he should create an ad that says he's cutting taxes for 80% of the people in country, raising taxes on only the richest X% (see, I don't even know), and eliminating income taxes for seniors making less than $50,000. Just that simple. He should run that ad over and over and over until it becomes a national mantra.

And, he should do the same thing with his proposals on education, energy, and so forth. Hammer his position home. He can hammer McCain all he wants, but doing so just creates a vacuum, unless he puts something out there to replace McBush.

Actually, this "Lose His Integrity" is what should be encoded into a TV commercial, not the weak sauce this morning. That's a great approach.

user-pic

Frankly, going back to high school and the Naval Academy... he never had integrity! Just wanted to seize the mantle and proclaim it! That's not integrity! That's hubris!

Charley Gibson has called Palin on the bridge to nowhere lie apparently. Looking forward to tonight's interview.

I agree with everyone else there needs to be an ad.

Integrity is a powerful word. But they also need to hammer the word "lie" into the ground. If "celeb" stuck to Obama, the Obama campaign needs to stick "lie" to McCain. It will allow them to respond to _all_ of the nonsense that pops up if it takes hold:

"That's just John lying again."

"That's just another Republican lie."

It will eventually allow them them to backtrack to get stuff like "celeb" off Obama by pointing out that McCain has been a starfucker for years.

It's the most powerful word they can easily throw at him, since "old" and "unstable" and "forgetful" and "batshit crazy" seem to be out of the Democratic playbook.

John

Where are the Obama ads? The media isn't going to report this stuff. Obama needs to launch attack ads directed at McCain's honor and integrity, including his choice of a liar for VP. I see all these clips of McCain and Palin lying their asses off but very few Americans are political junkies and they don't see it. Its up to Obama and DNC to run ads that people will see.

Todd Palin subpoenaed in firing probe.

Why don't they subpeona her? Sounds like they want to?

Still, the First Dude hits pretty close to home...

Obama must finally realize he is losing this election. A little to late.

LOL!

Yeah, before we even have a debate is "to" late.

user-pic

ATTACK HIS STRENGTH!!! EXPRESS DISAPPOINTMENT

user-pic

Weak. Sorry, but the McCain campaign will just say "Apparently, Obama has no message so he chooses to attack. He attacks Palin, and now he attacks McCain. That is the depth that Obama has sunken to."

In order to get this to stick, Obama has to fake outrage and then he has to have millions and millions of supporters fake outrage, too. (Well, the outrage really isn't fake in our case, unlike the lipstick.) But the Dems lack that stupid, lock step outrage the other side has. So this won't go anywhere.

It is a problem for Obama. How do you handle incessant, nasty, false attacks on you? If you respond, you get off message; if you ignore them, they stick. I work as a substitute teacher, and I often face the same dilemma. If a student wants to disrupt, to yell and scream and curse, he becomes the center of attention. If you respond to the student, you can't teach; if you ignore him, you can't teach. You can't communicate or debate when the other side deliberately disrupts, and when the press just sits idle.

user-pic
and when the press just sits idle.

But they didn't. Haven't you been keeping up? It's been the headlines all over - they have called McLame out for lying and they have called Palin out for being totally unqualified.

I just got this from DailyKos. This is very powerful and somewhat graphic. It reminds you why this very election is critically important. No More Wars!

HE'S ALIVE!

Palin may turn out to be a gift that keeps on giving. Her interview with ABC News scared the s**t out of me. He may be well intended, but even a well intended person could not be a co-pilot of a passenger plane.

Having said this, I would ask you a question: would you trade places with the Reps in this election?

I've always loved the "Stess & Back Pain" excuse. If you've dealt with Additions of the Rich & Famous at all, "Stess & Back Pain" always rank near the top of explanations of those people becoming addicts. Tawny Kitten comes to mind.

It's all about the ground troops. If we don't want McCain/Palin in the white house, we need to stop blogging (so much) and start calling and donating and canvasing.

I'm from NY, but I spent this past weekend in NH canvassing door-to-door. I traveled there with three other cars full of volunteers. In October I will spend another weekend in NH knocking on doors. On Election Day I will be in NH driving people to the polls. I'm making calls every night from home.

What are you going to do?

I'm saying it now: President Barack H. Obama, Jr., 2009 - 2017

53 Days Until Election Day!

Now THAT stings.

Oilbama lost any attempt at Integrity when he voted for the Bush Cheney Energy Bill.

5 O'Clock Charlie...

Somewhere in Massachusetts, a village is missing an idiot.

I've been waiting for this for the past week. Call out McCain on his honor and integrity. Hit him right in the gut and see how he reacts. About time they did this.

Now it's getting interesting!

He had to wait until the MSM was open to the idea that the POW McCain was capable of behaviour that was less than the purest of virtue.

thank you, dear Sir!

You are most welcome.

>>But they didn't. Haven't you been keeping up? It's been the headlines all over - they have called McLame out for lying and they have called Palin out for being totally unqualified.

But this press reaction strikes as too weak to really sway the election. You would need the same level of mockery dumped on Gore (when he wasn't lying) to sway the pubic, I would think. The McCain is banking on that the public who will sway the election will only follow the hype and the ads. Like I said, McCain is following a risky strategy.

user-pic

That's just it - they were mocking Gore, "Oh Al, you exaggerate so, it makes me laugh."
What they are doing to McCain is not mocking - they are flat-out saying "don't piss on my back and tell me it's raining" (sub-text "you lying SOB").

Hah!

Folks should go read the latest over at Sullivan's page. I think this reader is on to something, and this site should take notice.

Where can I go these days to actual hear what Obama is saying on the trail? All I hear about is big, bad Palin and McCain. It's gotten to be an obsession, and it's not helpful.

I'll tell you something. My view of things is this. We in the liberal blogs are attacking McShame. Which frees up Obama and Biden to go out there and present the issues and the message.

We already know the message. We know the issues. We don't need Barack there to oversee every little detail! this is not the repub party where things trickle down from the top. We are the Dems. We can think for ourselves.

And my view, my very strong view here is that our tasks differ. We are attacking the attackers. And watching out for Barack's back! So he can go out there and take the high ground and present the issues to the people who still need to hear them.

Just hammer away folks! Cuz we are making progress. Don't look to Barack for guidance, cuz he has set us free. It's our movement. We should not make things hard for our guy. No, we should make his road easier - by attacking these lies and these cries of "wolf!" "wolfie!"

I have to say that after watching a lot of McCain's interview on The View http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/12/mccain-grilled-on-the-vie_n_125972.html

it's clear that the mostly non-journalists on The View do a better job than the whole of the msm in actually challenging McCain on his lies and speaking in vague generalities.

The MSM berated Obama for a long time for supposedly lacking substance, but the McCain campaign doesn't appear to have ANY specific plans. They just shout, "Drill" and "Reform".

While Obama would rather retain his integrity than win an election.

What a terrible quote... what a terrible idea... what a terrible rebuttal.

I'm not a concern troll. I'm here to tell you that this thing is lost. Obama still, after having his honor attacked, his integrity impugned, and having been smeared by a barrage of ads, is issuing bland statements about lobbyists and hinting that McCain is old (1982.) Good luck with that Mr. Obama. It's a loser strategy for what is looking increasingly like a loser campaign.

I'm gonna tell you one more time, and this is your last chance to get it right. You have to go after McCain in aggressive and personal terms. His drug abusing wife, his incompetent vice president, his support for child molesters(right where he attacked you... kick him back in the nuts... because everybody knows that is what he did to you, and everybody knows you haven't responded.)

You are looking like Dukakis after the rape question.

You are looking like Kerry on a windboard.

You are being mocked and ridiculed... bad enough... but worse... truly fatal... you are not being seen as a man who can defend himself and HIT BACK.

Fail dude. Total fail.

And I don't give a damn about you, but I sure as shit don't want to live in the country that your inability to fight is going to leave me with.

Barry's melting! THE ONE, the Muslim Jesus (BHO can't remember his religion so I give him the benefit of doubt and believe he's a Muslim). The end is near... President McCain/ VP Bimbo. Back to being the empty suit Junior Slime-bag Senator from the corrupt state of Illinois.

B. Hussein Obama = LOSER!

Clinton 2012; McCain 2008!

People have to realize Obama's campaign is about timing. They waited till all the major news networks and papers debunked McCain's ads, then they unleashed a devastating line. That line will definitely be in an ad but I think they will wait till next week to release it because pretty much all the focus from the news networks is on hurricane Ike.

user-pic

This is a damn-dirty-lie by the Obama Campaign . . . John McCain has no integrity at all to trade, give or sell.

user-pic

Agreed. You can't lose what you never had!

user-pic

Assuming sarcasm about the lying by Barack, of course.

A press statement? Seriously? THAT'S the new harsher strategy the Obama campaign is taking. This campaign is looking more and more like Kerry/Edwards all over again.

Of course McCain would rather lose his integrity rather than lose the election! How is this news to anyone? Does anyone here think that Mr. and Mrs. Joe Middle America give one rat's ass whether or not McCain's integrity is intact? No, because all they see on TV are the lies that McCain is airing over and over and over. Our response? Send a f#%$ing press release?!?! Ugh. Perception is reality, whether or not it's wearing lipstick.

Until Obama/Biden start visually and vocally fighting back and regain some of the fire and enthusiasm that has all but totally dissipated since the convention, we're going to lose this thing.

I'm tired of losing. I'm even more tired of watching Democrat after Democrat stand by and take punch after punch to the face without ever once thinking of swinging back.

Democratic faithful to Obama/Biden...where are you?

Need to see those polls edging back up in Obama's direction. But the tougher edge is a start. Now unleash those 527s and let's start taking it to these jerks.

I heard that Obama wanted to make the peacock the National Bird and flower.

The debate about who is the best candidate for America can be put to an end with 1 more campaign ad that should run until election day that states

McCain says that he is going to reform Washington yet McCain has consisently refused women their right to be pro-choice and he has voted consistently against equal pay. Now that is not reforming Washington - that is more of the same - Shame on you John!

End of debate because what a woman doesn't like is being told what she can do with her body and that she doesn't deserve equal pay. It will also negate the Sarah Palin effect because women will then see that John has no respect for women - only and unless they are beneficial to him.

Yeah, we lost it. no doubt about it.
For 6 weeks now I was waiting, hoping he will take it them, but hill no, like Kerry, Gore & even Dukakis before, same old story, he f~~king fall on his face and start rambling around. They got him now, and knowing how these vile republicans act, they will never let off. He now falls into their trap, just listen:
** The "surge"" has succeeded beyond our expectations> what success, we can't even take 1000 solider out of Iraq, what success when we lost over 4200 dead,50000 wounded, & over 10 $trillion lost, what success??
*** Keeps on calling McCain "service" heroic, we lost the damn war in Vietnam, Again swallowing the GOP TPs.
*** When they ran an ad accusing him of supporting child porn, you think he’ll come out swinging and mad as hill, like how dare you, and instead of a press release had an ad with McCain history of the Keating Five, 25+ years of sleazy deals in DC for the defense contractors while our bridges fall apart, his support of the wrong war that cause 4200 Americans dead, etc, just show some fight for Christ sake, so we can be proud of you, and show us you are different from Gore & Kerry.
*** They laughed at his experience and abilities at their conventions, you think he'll come out swinging, hill no, he just keeps on whistling dixxie.
*** I gave Barak $$, now, I think HRC was right when she said no dem knows how to beat the sleazy GOP but the Clintons, so maybe we have to wait 20-25 more years when Chelsea runs for president, so we can have our "own" president.

better trolls please.

I disagree - well I really do trust Obama's electoral intelligence, and I trust that he has the right plan to come out on top. The elections are still two months away, there are one on one debates to be held, and McCain's aggressive tactic will, I hope and believe, prove to be short sighted, the beginning of his end. Right now he s going all out, let him consume himself.

Timing is everything. The Obama campaign waited until McCain had really dug a nice, deep hole for himself before getting out the shovels. Now it's war, but McCain's lost his credibility and his integrity. Good job, Obama.

Obama has been brilliant lately. Did you notice what he did to Sarah Palin? His campaign saw her speech at the convention, with the line about being a pit bull with lipstick, and they knew this was going to be a major theme in the weeks going forward. So they took it away from her. In one sentence, Obama destroyed her big punch line. It will never be used again. That's why the McCain campaign responded with such ferocity. How DARE Obama be smarter than them?

This is just the start of it. I'm just waiting for the day when Joe Biden starts saying, "Folks, it's time for a little straight talk..."

Obama is gonna kick ass.

user-pic

hrebendorf,
I honestly don't think Obama used the "lipstick on a pig" line to defang the "lipstick" and "pitbull" line. It may work out that way, but I doubt that was the intention.

I do agree, however, that Obama is a lot smarter than most of the chicken littles in the blogosphere. He does this all the time, giving his opponents enough to rope to hang themselves with.

Obama is the master of political rope-a-dope.

On The View yesterday, John McCain said, "Senator Obama chooses his words very carefully, OK? He shouldn't have said it. He shouldn't have said it. He chooses his words very carefully and this is a tough campaign." John McCain is right: Senator Obama chooses his words very carefully, and this is a tough campaign. What Senator McCain hasn't figured out yet is that he's being played like a violin. This is hardball, and Senator Obama, contrary to what some are claiming, plays the game very, very aggressively. Obama meant to push McCain's buttons. He meant to offend. He's calling McCain out.

John McCain is destroying his reputation as a straight shooter. He is alienating and pissing off his former allies and admirers in the press. He is raising doubts about his integrity and his credibility. John McCain treading water. He is drowning. He just hasn't realized it yet. And Barack Obama, standing on solid ground, just tossed McCain an anvil with the words "life preserver" written on it.

John McCain shouldn't have messed with Barack Obama. This could have been a dignified campaign. Now all bets are off. It's gonna get ugly.

I would like to see an ad where they show ALL of McCain's lies. That is what needs to be run. I especially want them to show the clip where McCain says...she put the jet on ebay and sold it for a profit.

That lie will make the mcCain camp angry. McCain has been duped into regurgitating Palin's lying talking points.

They also need to show McCain talking about how she is a reformer when it comes to earmarks. They need to capture McCain saying 'she reformed Alaska and when it came to earmarks she rejected them'

Then again show it is a lie.

Every single lie Palin has told they need to put Mccain in the ad repeating it and calling him a liar.

This will create lots and lots of infighting with the McCain camp. While they had misleading ads prior to Palin, McCain was not an outright liar.

Ummm, except for the ad saying Obama would raise taxes, that was a lie and it was before Palin.

They also need to put McCain in the ad remarking on how mayors and governors with short term experience do not measure up. Then juxtapose that with his statemetns on the most important criteria for a VP.

It is time for the Obama campaign to show how the StraightTalk McCain has turned into the Shameful lying without honor McCain.

We need an ad that's a montage of McCain's greatest hits:
-"Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran"
-reaction to "bitch" comment re Hillary
-confusion about Sunni/Shiite and borders of mid-east countries
-disparaging small town mayors
ETC.

Simple tag line: Is this who you want to lead your country?

Also, surrogates should bring up the absurdity of McCain's feigned outrage over "sexism" against Palin by calling him on his disgusting rape joke, the Hillary "bitch" incident, his calling his wife a disgusting name (if that can be confirmed). So far, Rachel Maddow is the only one I've seen go there. This is not a man who seems to respect women, and it's so twisted that his campaign can play the sexism card.

Notice when McCain is lying, he stutters.

Notice the GOP pundents talk so fast "they" don't even know what they are saying, and because they talk and don't suck oxygen, they are literally brain dead. How can you trust a stuttering republican that has no manners?

By the time McCaine has selacked all his lies America will be so tired of hollow thoughts.

I hear McCain talk I swear I hear an echo!

Now that SARAH PALIN and the world has been educated - will the infamous Bush Doctrine cause more U.S. casualties?

I have never seen a decisive story picked up by so many news outlets as this one. McCain's lies are catching up with him, even as his numbers rise. This is interesting. I think it's scaring people. The commentators on Slate's "Gabfest" were alarmed, frustrated, shaken by McCain's success at moving the numbers BY LYING. It's the right story at the right time. Pound it home and let it work,

A thought about the next wave: violence is heating up in Iraq Assassinations, ethnic warfare, increasing sectarian discord. The supposed success of the surge is in very real danger of unravelling. Watch this one. By the time McCain pulls the "wildest dreams" spot out, there may be no reason to do so.

McCain's own words provide the most powerful reasons against his presidential ambitions. When asked to justify why it was OK for McCain to say 'lipstick on a pig' but not OK for Obama, McCain said "Obama chooses his words very carefully". The only interpretation I can think of for this, is that McCain believes that he himself does not choose his words carefully. That shows two important points about why McCain is unfit to be president. Firstly, he does not think carefully about what he says. And secondly, he thinks that he should not be held accountable for what he says. As we have seen from Bush, such characteristics make for disastrous foreign policy.

Obama, can't be something he's not. People keep saying that he needs to hit back, he needs go negative and start fighting. But what people are forgetting is that Obama has a game plan that up until this point has been very successful. He took down the Clinton machine and he will take down McCain.

Let's have confidence in his game plan and his ability to implement that plan. Republican are trying very hard [ and with the help of the media] to portray democrats as a party that is in disaray. Their firing out all these negative ads with the hope that something will stick, or at best distract voters from the issues. Obama is saying don't take the bate...stay focused on the issues. It's classic warfare, which is "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes".

Don't these sleazoids all claim to be Christians?

Matthew 26: For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

I will eat ramen for the remainder of this election cycle and give all I can to run ads on mcsenile's lies and smears. Can MoveOn or someone please get these ads up - We need have a "50 state strategy" and get ads running on MSM, print, whatever.

In running the sleaziest campaign since South Carolina in 2000 and standing by completely debunked lies on national television, it's clear that John McCain would rather lose his integrity than lose an election.

I am MORE AFRAID of someone who lies with reckless abandon, than I am of anyone else, period.

And the new John McCain is not the same one I voted for in 2000. That John McCain would not have resorted to telling lies.

To say that I am disappointed, is an understatement.

What has happened to him, I do not know, but whatever it is, It is sickening.

But in the end (of this political process), one thing will be perfectly clear:

Americans would have gotten the kind of leader they want or deserve, whoever that person happens to be.

Well Senator Obama may indeed choose his words carefully but sometimes Mr. McCain doesn't choose to express himself with words at all. Instead his face turns red with anger. He was getting to that point in this great interview.

He really can be a very scary guy.

I hear McSame speaks and feels I need to go take a dump.....
Hey, anyone have any news on the initiative plan in San Francisco to rename the sewage treatment plant after Bush....
Maybe the good people of AZ need to consider such an honor for McSame.

The measure qualified for the November ballot.

What honor? McCain will not even give the press a definition of the word anymore. Why do people preface remarks on McCain's lies with the phrase, McCain is an honorable man? You can judge a man by his deeds, and McCain's deeds have become a tirade spouting a litany of lies, innuendo, and sleaze. His cynical attempts to demonize his opponent speaks volumes to his honor and credibility.

Calling out South Carolina 2000 is FUCKING BRILLIANT and they should mention it every chance they get. Remind that asshole where he's from and who he's becoming.
