New Obama Ad: "The Same, The Same, The Same"

Those who are fans of the "McSame" strategy will be thrilled by this new Obama ad attacking McCain that's hitting the airwaves today, just in time for Bush's address to the convention via satellite tonight.

The spot flashes "The Same" across the screen in huge white letters, and runs through a litany of areas where Bush and McCain are "the same" -- Iraq, the economy, etc.

The ad will air on national cable and in battleground states.

That music is perfect. Lighthearted laughter, rather than dirty mockery.

Yeah, the lightheartedness makes it seem like it's not really an attack ad.

Love that clip of McSame himself boasting about having voted with Bush over 9% of the time.  From the Horse's Mouth (no offense, Greg).

user-pic

... over 90% of the time.

user-pic

Absolutely. Totally undercuts any GOP spin on that statistic, which was also hammered home during the Democratic convention.

Beautiful.

Above the fray.

user-pic

Good - Obama is staying steady and on-message. McCain is having a terrible week but that could all turn around in a second if Obama gets sloppy. Obama's campaign discipline is awesome.

Wow! Didn't know there was video footage of McCain saying that he voted with Bush over 90% of the time. Anybody want to bet when we'll see a Rev. Wright ad this week?

I wonder. I hear McCain fans bringing up Wright occasionally, but after all the nonstop discussion about it back in March and April, I wouldn't be surprised if that story has lost most of its grip.

Oh it hasn't gone ANYWHERE I guarantee.

We are far away from the election. That little bit will be brought back to the minds of the voters the WEEK of the election.

Mark it.

Yeah, but Obama has Keating Five in his back pocket. I don't think McCain will trot out Wright again, but look for the independent groups to spray Ayers, Wright, and Rezko all over the place.

I am wondering if Obama might be able to just roll his eyes at the Reverend Wright stuff and say "Haven't we already been through this crap?"

My suspicion is the same as your own, that McCain's people are waiting to use Wright until the LAST POSSIBLE moment, and spend $20m on a commercial where the god damn america line is played on repeat.

I think that by then the story will be so old that the media will pick it up again, but most voters will think to themselves "I already knew about this. This is old news." Not that FoxNews and every other outlet won't be only too happy to re-live that stuff all over again.

The reverend resurfaced the other day. He discussed Barack a bit in a sermon. It appeared on Mark Halperin's "The Page," but I have not seen it or the reverend mentioned anywhere else worth noting.

That's what I was thinking. Guess they were saving that. Nice one.

Saw this ad this morning on CNN. Great stuff.

Great. Economy, Iraq, Washington ties, SAME. Perfect. Moreover, no better spokesperson than McCain.

Obama is back in charge. I love this!

Great. And I just know in my heart that they are saving the argument for later in the campaign that "the same" does not = "the same" because the pain accumulates with "the same" to make things worse. That's why we feel so terrible from the previous eight years of "the same."

user-pic

Off topic a bit, but check out that lovely Pollster graphic of the national poll, and Obama's steep jump. Thank you, Denver and Sarah!

Wow...that's some hardcore advertising. That's the kind of stuff that seeps into your consciousness and can't be shaken.

P.S. The Same!

user-pic

It's actually kind of boring for those of us in the loop, but it must play great to the unwashed, I mean, undecided.

user-pic

What a fun little commercial.

user-pic

Love the McSame strategy.

Love being a Democrat these days -

Kinda simple! Much like its subjects!

Yes, that is the point, I suspect!

Good Stuff!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't know about the ad, but we will see a lot of that crap on the RNC convention stage the next three days..

"Do you want to see 'Black' man with a bunch of questionable black associates hijack the 'White' house?"

No reason to expect less from the RNC convention.

Call this commercial inoculation; I guess in part it is to blunt the issues you raise.

user-pic

O I hope so.

They can just about guarantee close to 100% turn out of Democrats if they do.

:)

Meant as a reply for Hussienismyname. Sorry.

Very good.

Obama and his people want to win; they realize the country really, really needs them to win, and they intend to win. And they will.

Best attack ad from the Obama campaign yet!

Let McSame hang himself. Great ad! Play it over & over! Now run an ad with Palin saying "If anybody can tell me what a Vice President does!"

Wow! now your talkin!

More lack of judgment talk & less tabloid talk would be nice to hear. Let them sink on facts.

Hope is looking good.

user-pic

Well, Sarah Palin's abysmal Family Values aren't tabloid material. They are facts and inasmuch as over half the reason they put her on the ticket is Family Values, then by god, hers are relevant.

user-pic

As for that traveling to foreign countries she's done?

Kuwait...Ireland? Turns out Ireland was a refueling stop on the Kuwait trip.

But, she has been to Canada.

Whoever is out there making points about her experience isn't doing a very good job it, if Ireland, a refueling stop, counts as visiting that country.

I visited Hawaii once, by that definition.

I think by Palin definitions that means you were Mayor of Honolulu.

I think by Palin's definition that means you were Mayor of Honolulu.

This election is a referendum on the Bush administration, no?

user-pic

I thought elections were about who would make the best president.

It's a referendum on the Bush policies.

user-pic

I disagree.

I think Obama is a spectacular candidate in and of himself, thank you very much.

"The same" is great. The other pithy phrase that should be exploited is from Obama's Denver speech: "Enough!" That word, combined with images of the failures of the last 8 years (including a graph showing surplus turning to deficits), and of Bush-McCain hugs, would also make an apt 30 second ad.

I shouted for joy when Barack said "Enough!" in his acceptance speech.

Here in Texas, one of the more popular Democrat bumper stickers just says: "Had Enough?"

Yep.

user-pic

Damn straight.

In '06, I had a giant banner sign on the fence in front of my house in Dallas that said: Had Enough? Vote Democratic.

And you know what? Dallas County did vote Democratic in '06 - a straight ticket.

Hahahaha!!!!!

I'm sure horrofic images of the last 8 years will feature in October. It's Obama camp's primary job to make people think about the last 8 years when they go into the ballot booth.

Greg's notes something very important:

"The ad will air on national cable and in battleground states."

This adds a punch! I suspect others are to follow!

Thanks Greg!

Ma and Pa you can sell the trailer; we are movin' to the White House. YUP! YUP! gets an Ass Whuppin' from Nope! Nope!

"Sarah Palin's future son-in-law says he's an Alaska 'redneck'"

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/homepage/v-print/story/51459.html

Excerpt:

The description appears in a profanity-laden entry posted by Levi Johnston in his MySpace account. The entry was made private over the weekend, but not before several media outlets published parts of it.

Johnston, 18, is believed to be the father of Palin's 17-year-old daughter Bristol's baby. On Monday, Palin revealed that the unwed Bristol is five months pregnant.

In a statement, Palin and her husband said the young couple will marry soon.

But in Johnston's MySpace entry, the teenager hints that fatherhood was not in his immediate plans.

Johnston says he is ''in a relationship,'' but on the question about how he feels about children he said: "I don't want kids.''

He also says his true love is ice hockey.

Here's part of his entry before it was made private:

'I'm a f--kin' redneck who likes to snowboard and ride dirt bikes. But I live to play hockey. I like to go camping and hang out with the boys, do some fishing, shoot some s--t and just f--kin' chillin' I guess. Ya f--k with me I'll kick ass."

Status: "In a relationship.''

Children: "I don't want kids.''

Oooohhhh, this makes me cringe. I feel for that poor girl.

Then again, this kid is truly just a kid. 18? Parenting a baby?

This whole thing is wrong on so many levels.

user-pic

Ahhhhh, Family Values....

Make your kid marry the schmuck who knocked her up.

Yessssss.... Family Values.....

We should mount a "Save Bristol" campaign or something.

I like the picture of those two cuddling there. Aren't they sweet together?

user-pic

Oh, oh!!!! Now this is frightening. We don't need another one of these wackos in the white house.

Sarah "Rambo" Palin:

Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God," she exhorted the congregants. "That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/02/palins-church-may-have-sh_n_123205.html

Personally, I am praying every day to God that the republicans get slaughtered in November for the good of the country and the good of the world. But, that's just me.

user-pic

She's Assembly of God?

O shit. I want her to withdraw - I don't care who we get next.

This isn't directly related to her, but my feelings about the Assembly of God are like this: 4 Texas women murdered their own children because they thought Jesus wanted them to and every one of them was Assembly of God.

user-pic

I agree on your observation. Unfortunately, people generally fit stereotypes in my experience. It's not always true, but it definitely puts me on my guard. Concerning the assembly of god types, look out, I have yet to meet someone who doesn't fit the general stereotype. Look at the king. He is typical, lies through his teeth and is directly responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and I am sure he goes to bed at night proclaiming that "he is saved." I don't believe it works that way. I could be wrong. Who knows, but it doesn't pass the smell test for me.

Religion, however, was not strictly a thread in Palin's foreign policy. It was part of her energy proposals as well. Just prior to discussing Iraq, Alaska's governor asked the audience to pray for another matter -- a $30 billion national gas pipeline project that she wanted built in the state. "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said.

There is brewing gossip and speculation Sarah Palin may withdraw her nomination- I hope she doesn't, atleast not until for a week or two.

According to Rick Davis, campaign manager for John McCain's presidential campaign:

"This election is not about issues," said Davis. "This election is about a composite view of what people take away from these candidates."

Pure gold for Obama.

Just perfect.

It's simple -- the same vs. change.

It's truthful.

It refutes one of the Repug Convention's themes, that McSame is a Maverick.

And it's powerful.

It's the server.

Even if you get the dreaded 500 Internal Server Error message, there's a good chance your post actually made it.

Instead of trying to repost, go <BACK>, refresh the original page, and look for your comment.

Not that that's 100% reliable, either, but it does help a lot.

Wow, the echo's happening today, even if you only hit the Submit button once. Wiggy!

With all the talk of Palin, her presence in this ad was noticeably absent.

And McCain now thinks he can beat Obama using the "Change" argument?

Have fun with that.

At this point, Obama's picture is in the dictionary next to the word "Change".

user-pic

Just saw it here in New Mexico during the noon news. Along with ads by Tom Udall (NM-Sen), Martin Heinrich (NM-01) and the U.S. Chamber of Congress (attacking Udall).

Have fun with that.

Brilliant ad. That is the sort of thing that I have been donating money to finance. Glad to see that I am getting my money's worth. Let us have more of these.

You know.... I had forgotten that there was video of McCain trumpeting his 90% support of Bush.

I've heard Obama attribute these type of quotes to Republicans directly, but I believe they should footnote every single one of them with a "And I quote..."

Or, just use that blurb in the beginning of every commercial from here to November.

I hope Obama does a CinC type ad about Gustav..out helping people in the Gulf.

I want him to be pro-active and hit with that type ad before McCain can leave St. paul...since they made just a huge deal about being AMERICANS this week and not repubs...when they suspended the convention.

Take the reins and the lead, Barack and keep it!!

All in favor of A Missouri Voter posting more, say aye!

user-pic

Aye, Captain!

Perfect attack. All you have to do is show those two bozos together and it's like a negative smear campaign against McCain. Bush is a walking smear campaign.

Man. That McCain clip is just fucking brutal! hahaha.

Yes, more of the same & believe it will happen. Barack is the best at campaigning in a long, long time, maybe ever.

Hard work & cautious optimisim from now through November 4.

And the McCain campaign continues to shoot itself in the foot.

Love this ad.
