New Obama Ad Directly Accuses McCain And Palin Of "Lying"
The Obama campaign, clearly convinced they have nabbed the McCain camp in a major error with the Palin-killed-Bridge-to-Nowhere fib, showcases it in a new ad that argues that McCain is "no maverick."...
The spot, which will run in key battleground states, is a hard-hitting one, directly taking on the "maverick" claim by referencing the multitude of lobbyists working for McCain, his voting record in sync with Bush, and of course, the Bridge-to-Nowhere fib. And it directly accuses McCain-Palin of "lying about their records."
In coming days, we'll discover whether the McCain camp's efforts to swipe the "change" mantra succeed in diluting or canceling out Obama's McSame message, or whether they merely shift the battle onto rhetorical turf that favors Obama.

The MSM will never care for the truth. We should put liar every time we put there name like, John(liar)/Sarah(liar).

What does Greg mean by putting quotes on "lying" and then using the word "fib"? Usually by "fibs" we mean "white lies." Is Greg going after Palin's white racism? Or does he just think "fib" is a cute word to go with a cute gal?

Chill out, he was quoting from the ad. Though I am curious as to why the Bridge-to-Nowhere thing is always referred to as a "fib". Lying about your record to make yourself appear to be something you're not is hardly trivial or minor, especially in the context of a presidential election.
Greg, would you agree?

Pretty good. Throws some nice punches. Good visuals. Simple to the point. I like the beginning much better than the end. The beginning seemed fresh and grabbed my attention. I liked the sound effects.
In the end I'd like a little more wit or humor. Something to make it stick and to get people to talk about it- like a Steve Eichenbaum ad.
I agree with Josh Marshall- we need some fresh advertising, these ads are pretty old school (not in the politics or message, but in the presentation).

We new need ads every day, if only to give the talking heads something to talk about. I'd really like to see one about how Palin and McCain are trying to obstruct and stall the troopergate investigation. For one thing, troopergate needs a lot more air time so that the public learns about it. Second, the notion that McCain and Palin are using political pressure to obstruct an investigation is an excellent foil to their reform/anti-washington message.

When ya got 'em dead to rights (like this time!) it might be best to delay the response a little. Give everyone a chance to hear the lie repeated several times -- in that smug whiney voice -- before stuffing it back down their fucking Repugnican throats.
It's nice to have a stack of video clips of McCadaver & WhiteTrash repeating the exact same lies over and over again. That's much more effective than calling BULLSHIT on a one-time gaff.

You are probably right, but this is directed at the heart of the message McCain-Palin has been pushing for the last week. Obama/Biden have been hitting the specifics in their local visits. I just got shivers. Great job. Keep 'em comin'. There are so many lies, hell - they could make a dozen ads like this and they'd all be different.
But now, actually, I think it'd be a great time to switch the narrative and come out with a series of positive ads. Obama still needs to sell his policies, his vision and yes, his personality. No reason he can't do that with his right hand while blistering McCain with the left.
September 8, 2008 6:01 PM | Reply | Permalink
Yes and no. McCain has conceded ground and agreed with Obama that this is a change election. If Obama proves McCain is not change, he's most of the way there. But as you point out, Obama does have to gain the electorate's trust. To me, this looks a lot like 1980 where Reagan wasn't able to allay people's concerns until the debate.
And speaking of debates, folks who are concerned now about polling need only remind themselves how big those 4 events are going to be. There are still lots of ups and downs to go in all of this....plenty of room for either candidate to change the equation significantly.

Good. Now, will every one stop getting their knickers in a twist! Of course the election is close. Did you think the wealthy interests who have enabled the largest transfer of wealth out honestly of this country would join hands and sing Kumbaya with us! Did you think right wing radicals dedicated to making Intelligent Design co-equal to evolution in the schools would simply melt away! Did you think Big Oil and Big Gas honestly would not fight against alternative energy even if it means the end of the planet as we know it. Get a grip. This will be a knife fight to the finish. Now, sit down and take a deep breath. Send another contribution to pay for more of these ads. Have an open dialog with friends and acquaintances who "like" Plain. Talk about ear marks. There's some interesting stuff going on in this ad. My attention was caught by the whip-crack effect, and the "naked lie."
The meta-message is pretty contemptuous.
To borrow David Kurtz's metaphor, I think they've decided to spend some of the brand identity they've been hoarding all this time. It is now firmly established that Barack is a nice guy. So if he kicks you around, you must really deserve it.
Which, I must say, they surely do.
September 8, 2008 6:12 PM | Reply | Permalink
O good point.
The loveliest thought of all is how very much Obama has stored up that to use - money, his brand identity, their utter fucked-upedness...and they are down to the bare bones. They really are. Money, the GOP brand - oy, smears: they have gone through a bunch so far and nothing has worked...they are out of everything.

Right. And the only reason it works is because they waited. Someone (here?) pointed it out before that Obama needed to let the public become convinced that McCain had gone negative before he hit back at all.
These guys are fishermen or poker players...pick your analogy...but they are patient and let things play out.
It's the rope-a-dope that people hand-wring over. And this thing is soooo much about timing. They have a plan to get all the way to election day with the message that they think will win.

Since the comment window bounces me down to the last post, I like the "John McCain - 10% Maverick, 90% Bush" line...
But the point I originally wanted to make was that this is how we push back. McCain is tried to use Palin and RNC to steal the "Change" mantra, and now he's stuck with it. He can't go back to being the solid, experienced choice -- he's basically stuck himself with a campaign theme that Obama can hammer on as dishonest for the next 8 weeks.
My guess is that the last week or so we've been watching the arc of McCain's Hail Mary pass, and that we're about to see it intercepted.

Great ad, except the closing line. It should skip the final "maverick" and just say, "You call it more of the same." Remember all the research about repeating a lie to debunk it just embeds the lie deeper? Having Maverick in the sentence at the end isn't necessary and risks strengthening the brand in viewers' minds over time even as the ad destroys the brand in the moment of watching it.

As much as I enjoyed the anti-Coleman ad, I suspect that it's not very effective because it doesn't actually *say* anything.

See? All those "John is an honorable man - my friend - we honor his service" are 1) true, 2) are the polite and civil things to say, 3) get the voters' attention if repeated enough times and 4) have the added advantage of making something so different like this have BIG impact. ----
Whereas with McCain and Palin, it's already getting to be a bored "okay, so what's the insult of the day going to be this time?" And with folks like Eddie Rendell, who are not a candidate and who also have standing to say whatever the heck they want to say (i.e., aren't clearly accepting direction from the campaign), pointing up all the lies, the McPain "insult of the day" will hopefully be taken with more and more salt.
His timing is maddening, it drives you (or at least me) nuts with frustration until you want to throw something ..... but I DO believe the Obama campaign knows what it's doing. At least, they know very well what works best for Obama (and Biden fits in nicely with that) and they are going to keep on doing it.

...cue circus music and fade in to image of a clown.
Narrator speaks: "Slight of hand and misdirection is fun...at the circus. But John McCain thinks they are good for national security and human rights too."
Clown voice chuckles and image fades.
Image changes to less friendly looking clown image.
Narrator continues: "John McCain opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects, but when the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”
Slightly more menacing chuckle as image fades.
Image changes to outright scary looking clown:
Narrator continues: John McCain was against torture, like waterboarding, but then he changed his mind.
Scary-Stephen King-IT-type clown laugh and image fades first to black, then to image of John McCain.
Narrator continues: "Good government is no laughing matter and on the imortant issues, John McCain is simply wrong."
This add could be followed a week or two later by another one focusing on foreign policy flip flops...then another showcasing econimic policy flip flops...etc...

It does 3 things.
makes on the fence voters question the mccain ticket and cast the whole lot as deceptive and dangerous.
It points out the blatant hypocripsy of the lobbying efforts on the whole campaign,

She makes the ticket vulnerable. They need to hit her hard continuosly. i know Obama wnats to focus on mccain, but the whole country knows he is old and its a good chance she will be president.

September 8, 2008 7:15 PM | Reply | Permalink
I enjoyed it, but I think it should have waited, or been a lot harder hitting.
Starting in about 24 hours, the Republicans will have a steady series of "lies" that Obama has told, like "Obama lies, there are only 50 states, not 57". The word "lie" will lose it's meaning in a week or two, and the cynical middle will say "I guess both sides lie" and we will be back where we started.
We need a 2 minute ad that lists lie after lie after lie, about relevant issues, and where there is no wiggle room. Have a website where everything is footnoted up the wazoo. Make the ad a press event. Make the media address the lying, not just report the controversy.
Obama's nice guy capital has a short shelf life, I hope it doesn't expire too soon.

Finally! It's wonderful to see the "lies" called directly, and by name. And because the O campaign seems to be the first to directly press the "liar" line, it seems that they may be turning from a reactive approach to conflict towards a proactive full court press.
Next, it would be wonderful to see an ad that references how well McCain would do under his own tax policies, compared to Obama's. "So if you're rich, Vote for McCain!" says the narrator. "Unless, of course, you happen have a conscience."
I'm also a fan of the opinion, oft expressed here on TPM, that the line could read "more of the same — probably even worse."

You all have to be kidding. This ad is terrible.
It repeats the "maverick" frame five times in 30 seconds. It uses generic visuals of McCain/Palin, and one that connects McCain to a bunch of people that no one recognizes. It tries to connect 'the facts' about three different things rather than hammering on one idea and an alternative frame.
Perhaps a purely reactive ad fits into their larger plans, but in itself this ad does little to introduce a new way of thinking about McCain/Palin

There's another impact of repeating "Maverick." (They're obviously doing it on purpose here.) It reframes a word that's easily reframeable.
"Maverick" is vulnerable because it doesn't actually denote anything in people's minds. It's vague and has no clear signified. It's a floating referent.
If people see this ad and think of it when they hear "maverick," the next time they hear McCain say it, the negative (or at least skeptical) connotation the ad has supplied is readily recalled to people's minds, because nobody actually knows what the hell it refers to other than McCain himself.
What is McCain? He's a maverick. What is a maverick? McCain. You redefine or contaminate "maverick," you redefine or contaminate McCain. And at this point, McCain has bet the house on "maverick."

I agree with the minority that this ad was not hard hitting enough. It's not merely that she was for it before she was against it. She didn't have a change of heart after she realized what a boondoggle it really was. She was never against it and she took the money anyway. What about hiring a lobbyist to get millions in earmarks for her small town? None of this is in the ad and it needs to be. Undecided and independent voters are not reading TPM. Many of them are not reading or watching mainstream media either. Commercials need to inform and persuade with facts, not vague claims. Obama's camp can say McCain is not a maverick ad infinitum. McCain's will continue to say he is.
Palin has already repeated the line and delivery of "I told Congress no thanks, if Alaska wanted a bridge we would build it ourself" verbatim from her convention speech and will undoubtedly continue to use it in the hope that if she says it enough people will believe it. Every day she repeats this line Obama should point it out and expose it as a lie by repeating the facts. If she says it 10 times a day, he should respond 10 times a day. Demonstrate her claim of being a fiscally responsible reformer is nothing more than a carefully scripted performance in an ad showing her saying the same line again and again in different venues interspersed with contrary evidence from various news sources (like the WSJ for example). I think people respond to facts more than they respond to cute sound effects and a voice over.
I also think it would be effective if the Obama campaign let McCain and Palin use their own words and obviously staged performances (not generic still photos) to hang themselves. There's so much material out there: waffling, agreeing with Bush, lying. We see it on the Daily Show almost every night. I only wish the Obama ads were as hard-hitting and effective as the Daily Show.

Please stop starting from a point of being the underdog. Obama is clearly ahead with the huge democratic majority which does not get polled because they are only cell phone people.
"...In coming days, we'll discover whether the McCain camp's efforts to swipe the "change" mantra succeed in diluting or canceling out Obama's McSame message, or whether they merely shift the battle onto rhetorical turf that favors Obama..."
We don't have to wait for the "coming days" to discover McCain's failed efforts because we already know there is no way in hell the McSame ticket will ever be viewed as a change ticket and they are beyond "reforming" themselves because they deny they are the problem they need to reform. Like waiting "for the coming days" to see if the tiger actually changes it's stripes...it's laughable to even suggest such nonsense. Just saying...the stakes are so high that everyone's paranoia is making them think things that are beyond the realm of possibilities.
Once again, the only way McCain wins is if they steal it and they are in the process of attempting to do just that. It is beyond doubt that they stole it in '04 and this is where we should be focusing all are efforts. Otherwise, Obama will win in a landslide. The polls are part of the theft process...don't believe them.

btw...McCain is a whimp...can't even raise his hands above his head (hey, I didn't do it. A man has got to know his limitations) yet he tries to act like he's tough all the time and he's really just a hot head who can't back it up anymore. I would show him as a carnival barker who is mean to kids...he's not my hero nor, after his neocon interventionist war mongering tactics do I have any respect for him. He's as predictable as Custard was for the Indians and would have the same tragic final results. I wouldn't want this guy or anyone like him in government service at all based on his dishonesty and hypocrisy. McCain is best described as "every lobbyists pet senator on a leash"...reform my ass.

I bit my tongue earlier today to keep from sounding the "Chicken Little" alert again. Judging by the still few doubters that this ad is not that good and should have been stronger, I need to remind you that the sky is not falling and the Obama campaign advertising is not starting with the finale, i.e. guns a blazing. In track and field terms, this run up to election day is like the 1500 meter run, not the 100 meter where it is a bust your gut sprint. Or the 200 meter where you run all out and leave it on the track. It's not a 400 meter where you run out hard the whole way with a strategy for gaining on the turns. The 1500 is strategy from start to finish. Start to fast and you're cooked. Start to slow and you get boxed in. You let someone else set the pace (as in the McCain camp), keeping right on their heels, avoiding getting boxed in. Each lap you push them a little more, so that they try to hold unto their lead. That last 300 meters, you've got enough in reserve to put the after burners on and let them eat dust, while they try to pull on reserve energy that just isn't there. Just what DO you think the Obama campaign is planning on doing with those 10s of millions? Save it? Don't think so. It's gonna be fun folks. The sky is not falling. Keep watching.
