New Obama Ad Hits McCain By Spotlighting Shuttered Factory In Pennsylvania
The Obama campaign keeps the focus on McCain and the economy by going local, spotlighting the plight of workers who were fired after a Corning plant closed in Pennsylvania...
How's this for a blast of ancient history: This Corning plant was actually also the subject of a mailer that Obama dropped during the campaign hitting Hillary for supporting normalizing trade relations with China.
The initial mailer was somewhat misleading, wrongly implying that Corning itself had shipped the jobs overseas. But the current spot doesn't repeat those errors, instead saying (accurately) that some of the workers were hired to ship the materials to China.
The ad is running in Pennsylvania and in other key states.

Perfect. These are the type of accurate, hard-hitting, and localized ads that need to be running non-stop. The Obama camp has really stepped it up this week, huh? Good on 'em.

Greg, it was not somewhat misleading in April.
Here's my comment from back then explaining why:

Now, they should do one about Indiana and put Barney Smith's story in there. That would be awesome!
Obama-Biden'08: Putting Barney Smith before Smith Barney!
PD: For those with short memory, Barney Smith was one of the 10 Obama supporters who won a contest and got the opportunity to speak at Invesco Field the night of Obama's acceptance speech. I would love to tell how cool it was, but the video does a better job: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuAVw_v3br8

The Obama camp is on a roll, huh? Amazing. We're back to talking about issues and look who's starting to gain in the polls. Look at who appears more presidential, more in tune with the concerns of real people.
I'm sure there are folks on the right saying, "Look at how happy the Dems are that the economy is tanking." Of course, we're not - especially somebody like me, a financial services company employee. Given the policies of today's GOP and the Bush administration, this was bound to happen. The only plus is that it's happening now, when we can debate which candidate is better suited to guide us through these rough times and which candidate has the better proposed solutions. I would have hate to have seen this nation elect a president based on - oh, I don't know, a shiny, new object from Alaska - without having this discussion. That's not to say Obama will win, but at least we're having the debate.
September 17, 2008 4:14 PM | Reply | Permalink
That's so true. If it's issues we win, if it's sleaze well we don't even come close.

Those in the media are not actual tools for the GOP. They live in this country, too and are probably freaking out just like the rest of us about where this current crisis could take us. I think they'll be more open (still have to think about ratings) to focus on the issues rather than the shiny objects.

And everyone who were pissed at Obama for the 2-minute ad this morning-just look at the ad campaign in full. One ad tells why not to vote McCain the other tells why you should vote Obama. Not only be against something but be for something too. I like it.

So when caught saying something that was not quite factually accurate, they corrected their error next time around rather than insisting they were never wrong or that the press is a bunch of doodyheads for getting all picky or that the error doesn't matter because there's no such thing as objective reality? Man, that's really naive.

They're internal polls must have said things were tightening up. Now McCain/Palin have to go down there, too. It's a definite advantage that they will joined at the hip for most of the campaign.

Wha? That's your response? If Obama wins Indiana, he'll have like 350 electoral votes. I mean, it would be nice to run up the score, but I'll settle for 270.
This is really good news given the current trendline and that McTemper is within days of blowing a McGasket. (You can see the veins popping out in his head; is it too much to hope he saves it for the first debate?)
Hard to see Obama winning Wisconsin, Ohio, and Florida, and losing the election. Factor in the cell-phone voters, and this is great news.

Pardon me, but 350 electoral votes = MANDATE FROM THE PEOPLE! The roughly translates to repugs stay home cause no one's gonna listen to you cause you don't have anything to say that anyone wants to hear.

Great CNN polls. A bit disappointed in IN and WI is a bit too close for my taste but, otherwise, good stuff!
A bit off topic but I wanted to share with you this exclusive preview of Sean Hannity's interview with Sarah Palin....
RUSH TRANSCRIPT:
SH: So, Governor, let me start by saying that you're a great American.
SP: Well, thanks, but no thanks...he, he, just kidding. Seriously, thanks, Sean...YOU'RE a great American?
SH: OK, let's get to the questions. First, an issue that is at the top of everybody's minds these days. Why won't Senator Obama address his association with the terrorist Bill Ayers?

I'm sick of seeing McCain grandstand with workers in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
This from a guy who is unapologetic in saying NAFTA was great for workers and so was increased trade with China!
McCain voted AGAINST working families 84% of the time since he's been in Congress according to the AFL-CIO's scorecard. In 2007 alone, he voted AGAINST workers all 8 times he showed up on votes important to labor (and zero times for workers).

I think the last 2 weeks were the best 2 weeks McCain is going to have. IMO, this thing is starting to tip BO permanently. You can feel it, that we are at a critical point.
What does BO need to do to close the deal?

I think it's just a matter of hammering away everyday with these ads everyday, hitting the stumps and pontificating on the economy.
The only hurdle at this point is the first debate. But now that the economy is number 1 and number 2 issue, all Obama has to do is avoid the serious gaffe.
Another question that comes to mind, is whether McCain can keep up physically. During the primary he seemed to need a lot of breaks. Obama isn't going to let up between now and November.
September 17, 2008 4:56 PM | Reply | Permalink
Yeah, everyone has been assuming that the debates are just going to be a breeze for Obama, but I actually think there is significant risk. Mainly because I remember people saying the exact same thing prior to the Bush-Gore and Bush-Kerry debates. And look how that turned out.
Debates are an expectations game, and right now everyone is expecting that Obama will kick McCains ass all over the place. Anything short of that could easily come out helping McCain more than Obama.

There you're go my friend, you're just plenty right, we're at a turning point in this election, the tide is turning at 1 month and a half to the election, Barack just needs to keep hammering McShame on the economy, more tough, direct and hard ads against him on the economy and what he's said in the past (like economy is something he doesn't understand the way he should), that's the magic solution.
And when the debates come, the 1st ones next Friday 26th, just finish him in front of national TV till the last debate.

Gosh, I would love for you to be right and me to be wrong, but my own intuition is exactly the opposite of yours. I think that we can expect to be down in the polls and up in the polls again and again over the next few weeks. We had best get this in our heads and learn not to panic based on a three point movement, because such things will likely happen many times over between now and Nov 4.

Given the market just tanked again today, I think Obama's 2 minute ad is sounding better and better. A calming voice in a storm will go a long way. I could use it right now. These are not happy times.
btw... any market watchers keeping track, the dow closed today only 20 points higher than it was when Bush took office on Jan 2001. Helluva job, Bushie!

I expect Social Security and Florida, with both Obama and Biden doing separate parts of the state.
Health Care after the first debate and as soon as the Wall Street crisis is stealing all the headlines.

New Ras Polls...
WI: O48-M46
OR: O51-M47
Confirms that WI is tight, but perhaps not as tight as 2004. There's a definite tightening in the OR race but Obama being at 51% is a very good thing.
Both were taken on Monday. I'd bet they'd be more favorable for Obama if they were taken today.

Oregon is basically a rural state, geographically so this may explain the closeness. My guess is that the Portland-Eugene corridor will swamp the election in the end, and Obama will win by 9 or 10.

I really didn't like the 2 minute ad but after seeing stocks drop another 450 points today thus the economy has lost a trillion dollars in 3 days, maybe the American people would be open to see an ad in which Obama isn't partisan at all and calming talks about his plan to the American people and how we are all in this together.
Perhaps now is the time to hear that kind of message.

Palin has become a non-issue this week. The implosion of the market is way over her abilities to comprehend. It's way out of her league. Her time as mayor of Wasilla and governor of Alaska in no way prepared her for such a catastrophe global meltdown of a financial system that world markets depend on. I don't think being able to field dress a moose or run down wolves via a helicopter to shoot and kill adequately prepares her to make astute observations of the problems facing the financial markets.
Time for her to go get lost in the woods.

WOW that's a very powerful Obama ad. Should really begin to resonate with blue collar workers in battleground states.
I posted video on my blog which catches John McCain in yet another lie. He claims when he said "THE FUNDAMENTALS OF OUR ECONOMY ARE STRONG" he didn't really mean it the way it sounds. But here is video of him repeating the same line at least 20 different times since December, 2007. Unbelievable! I can't wait until the MSM gets hold of this.
