New Obama Ad Hammers Bush, But Not McCain

Barack Obama is not stopping his campaign activities like John McCain, and is instead trying to seize the campaign narrative on the economy with this new ad blasting policies of deregulation and tax cuts -- though any direct mention of John McCain is now missing.

The ad, airing in targeted states, has Obama speaking directly to the camera for a full minute:

"For eight years we've been told that the way to a stronger economy was to give huge tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest," Obama says. "Cut oversight on Wall Street. And somehow all Americans would benefit."

"Well now we know the truth. Instead of prosperity trickling down, pain has trickled up. We need to change direction. Now."

It's interesting here that Obama isn't directly attacking John McCain, as past ads have done when talking about the economy -- a concession of sorts to McCain's campaign suspension. A harder, direct attack might have played into McCain's attempt to play the statesman in all this.

It's interesting for a different reason altogether. I disagree with your conclusion - this has nothing to do with Mclame suspending his campaign and everything to do with being Obama and reaching out to people directly and on a non-partisan basis, except insofar as attacking the Repug ideology that got us here.

user-pic

Except it was Democrats ideology that got us here...Carter, Clinton and the Dems in congress.
Under Clinton HUD Secretary Andrew Cuomo, investigated Fannie Mae for discrimination and proposed that 50 percent of Fannie Mae's and Freddie Mac's portfolio be made up of loans to low income borrowers by the year 2001. Clinton's Federal Reserve demanded that banks treat welfare payments and unemployment benefits as valid income sources to qualify for a mortgage.Rep. Barney Frank denounced Bush's White House Cheif Economist when he raised concerns about Freddie and Fannie, saying he had no "concern about housing."...but hey, why worry about facts...blame it on Bush...it's good enough for every other complaint you have.

I don't think your conclusion is right. Basically, the drop in the polls has been to the voters perceiving McCain as being weak on the economy, and right now, Obama's casting himself as the statesman in control of his campaign with a strong message on the economy.

Yup! Obama is so post-McCain!

It may be a concession or it may be that Obama's camp sees the election now about "who can best clean up this mess." The polls have Obama well in front of the economy, so he can basically ignore McCain, and Palin, in sense create a narrative that those two are irrelevant to the discussion on Topic Number One.

I agree. It's not necessary for him to attack McCain personally, because he will continue the same policies that Bush has done and that's the point Obama's trying to make.

The next American presidential. Money well spent. How wise that he saved the resources and the guns for this rather than wasting them weeks ago on the celebrity nonsense as everyone else wanted.

As a Dem, there is that sense of being burned in the past, and so it's nice to have put one's faith in Team Obama and to see it rewarded.

I meant president, not presidential.

user-pic

I like it! First of all, to me, Obama has this great, soothing voice. He's talking directly to you. He places the blame squarely where it belongs. People's internal scripts already provide who is linked to bush. No need for propaganda.

Then Obama tells us about the future.

It's a great ad!

user-pic

I could not agree more. This kind of ad, IMO, is really well-suited for the situation. Instead of a stupid attack ad - and god McLame is running some trash here in New Mexico - just trash - Obama is acting like a president and really working to calm the crisis and show us why we need him to get us out of here.

Tell about the trash McCain is running in NM, please.

user-pic

Just saw this - sorry it took awhile - I stopped to make a blt on green chile cheese bread. :)

The one I hate the most is the ad with big bad music and a whole bunch of lies about Obama and BIG GOVERNMENT and how he's going to tax the blood right out of your arm.

I just hate that damn ad - it's a big fat lie and designed to scare the shit out of people.

Thank god it's mostly followed by that great Obama ad telling people his tax cut would save the middle class 3 times more than McLame's would.

Is that the one with the scary dark shadow over the baby's face?

Wall Street Greed VS Main Street Need

Dear concerned citizens of America and Mass Media of the U.S.A.
As a concerned registered independent voter, forensic psychiatrist, disabled American I made my decision to vote after taking into consideration following joint tickets attributes and characteristics.

1. Has the ticket shown adequate calmness, coolness, and connectedness's under pressure to lead our nation [Presidential Temperament]?
2. Has the ticket shown sustained sound "Judgment and Caliber"?
3. Has the ticket shown adequate understanding of depth and degree to address the crucial challenges in their their purpose, policies, and positions [ Honesty, integrity and sincerity]?
4. Has the ticket sufficient "understanding and knowledge" of inside Washington workings [Experience]"?
5. Has the ticket reservoir resilience, wisdom, and vigor to address the present and future f our beloved "Great-grand Nation"?
6. Has the ticket enough joint foreign policy experience and exposure based on " Values, Virtues, Vastness, and " [American moral soul]"?
7. Has their campaign talk, slogans, ads, plans, and programs based on facts and are they free of fear, fiction, frivolous labels, unfair attacks, negativity, and impulsively? [No "imminent danger to national
security and safety"].
8. Has the ticket genuinely kept on message of country first and politics last and avoided copying [Message change"]?
9.Has the ticket message stayed away from Culture divide and war[ Disaster prevention ]?
10. Has the ticket resisted being surrounded, supported and surrogate's by divisiveness, distortion's, and destructive characters, [ Real patriotism VS shiftiness and shameless parrot-ism]?
11. Has the ticket thoughtful, real non-partisan, & non-impulsive plans to address our current economic crisis or political tactics and temperamental statements.
I have personally and professionally concluded that OBAMA-BIDEN ticket will lift and inspire our greatgrand nation back to its greatness within and restore our global standing with the use of maximum, firm
international diplomacy and minimal force if and when indicated {" Peace thru Strenght "}.
12. The era of responsibility has to replace irresponsibility and unaccountability will change to accountability and transparency. The Wall Street greed will change to Main Street need.

Yours sincerely,

PS: It is sad and unfortunate that Hon, Temperamental Maverick McCain has been turned into " Roller-coaster" by his political moves and handlers.

Well after reading that,(and conducting the same amount of clinical analzsis with the subject of my study as you have), in my personal and professional opinion, you are suffering from Dependent personality disorder (DPD), it is a personality disorder that is characterized by a pervasive psychological dependence on other people (ie TheMessiah). The difference between a 'dependent personality' and a 'dependent personality disorder' is somewhat subjective, which makes a diagnosis sensitive to cultural influences such as gender role expectations.

Things I like:

The phrase "change direction" is much better than "change".

The attack here is on the entire economic philosophy of the right wing, and McCain cannot run away from that.

Things I don't like: It's static. Yes he is talking to the people, but there should be some dynamism, if nothing else, he delivers it while walking. Or maybe he is standing on main street somewhere. Maybe there is just video behind him. I don't know. His ideas and his persona have dynamism. McCain is stuck in the past.

user-pic

It provides a calming, soothing atmosphere - in stark contrast to the mcShame twins's incessant soap opera.

It's pitch perfect!

I like that he says "common-sense safeguards" instead of "regulation". Framing, framing, framing...

I've been critical of these minute long "talk to the camera" ads, but this is perhaps Obama's best ad of the entire campaign.

This ad says: "I will be your next. President. I'm sorry these other guys fucked shit up so bad for you. But I will fix it. I know what I'm doing."

Just a great ad.

Excellent spot. Talking to the camera, being presidential, making the case eloquently and persuasively.

My only pet peeve is that he said the same of the website -- should have just had it up as a graphic.

But overall, right on the money. So to speak.

Correction: "said the NAME of the website"

Obama is driving a stake into the heart of the blood-sucking ideology of the Republicans. This message is larger than the campaign itself or the politics of today.

Paul Krugman must be having an orgasm.

user-pic

Yeah, well, Krugman better be kicking himself and saying "mea culpa" a whole hell of a lot. He was an asshole at the beginning of the campaign.

Right up to the point where Hillary could not go further.

I love the timing and restraint this campaign shows. Very intelligent to have Obama at just this perfect moment speak directly to the people. He looks Presidential while McCain looks like he's flailing his little T-Rex arms in despair.

Love. This. Campaign.

Dude, you're not supposed to talk about the T-Rex arms. That's verboten.

Damn. Then what am I going to do with all of the dinosaur knowledge my daughter has given me over the last 3 years?

You know, for five years McCain didn't have any T-Rexes while HE WAS A POW! Don't forget that!

I won't! Awesome stuff mmeetoilenoir!

This has nothing to do with McCain's theatrics.

It is becoming clearer by the day that Obama is not really running against McCain, he is running against Reagan. Specifically the supply side, trickle economics that Reagan ushered in, were pushed to the extreme under Bush, and has now brought this ruin upon us.

What Obama is saying here (by not saying it) is that McCain is largely irrelevant to this debate. Obama is now running against a system and a philosophy, of which McCain is only a pawn.

Yep. It really diminishes McCain.

Moi aussi!

user-pic

Yeah, and in my opinion, running against Reagan is key to revealing the Republican brand and philosophy as the failures they are.
It also has the virtue of maybe getting through to the "Reagan Democrats" to let them know they've been swindled.

user-pic

I'm just sitting back and watching the beauty of the comments rolling along here.

I feel soothed enough to go for a bike ride soon- with my OBAMA logo and name on lovely signs handing from the back luggage rack.

user-pic

"hanging" from the back luggage rack. Though little hands holding signs would be kinda cute!

user-pic

*chuckle*

actually, I think you're cute, Thera. I love that avatar, it's so cheerful.

user-pic

Another one...just for you!

He doesn't have to attack McCain directly. Everyone knows who he's running against. By hammering Bush, he gets a two-fer: he implicitly ties McCain to Bush and says that he (Obama) is the guy to fix this mess.

user-pic

my thoughts exactly

Obama's already done the groundwork of tieing Bush and McCain together, which is pretty easy -- people are aware that tax cuts for the rich and de-reg are clearly issues both McCain and Bush agree on

is that you Bill? 2008 meet 1992!
http://www.livingroomcandidate.org/commercials/1992/rebuild-america

Loved this ad. Different candidates, different times, and different tones, but the root and heart are the same. It might be too soon, but right now I think this is Obama's best ad helped in part by the perfect timing of it.

After the devastation of Republican mis-governance, he comes as a re-builder, as a restorer of reason and of hope before the mess created. Our country and the world needs a true leader in times like this.

user-pic

So true. So true.

Obama is doing what I hoped he would do. He's making this a debate about conservative governing philosophy. I think this could actually change the direction of the country. Big thumbs up to this Ad.

I really like this ad. It needs be run far and wide.

user-pic

He's laying the groundwork for the way he'll address us when he's president. Talking to us from a chair. Telling it like it is. Carrying us forward into the future.

OT

Strong poll numbers for PA today from SurveyUSA (50-44).

Colorado seems to be breaking hard for Obama. If he can put away CO, McCain's only path to victory is through PA.

Obama has got a death grip on McCain neck right now and he's squeezing.

I guess it depends on what your definition of a suspended campaign is.

Why did McCain have to announce that he was suspending the campaign? Why couldn't he have just gone to Washington to do the people's business?

He could have kept the ads going, done the debate and still do whatever he needed to do in DC.

It's all political, it's grandstanding. McCain is shameless.

damn. I responded to the wrong post.
damn ashes.

Saw the earlier two-minute one yesterday, before the local news sports segment. This style is much more effective than more attack ads could be.

I can just picture the low-info voter at home: "That Obama dude is just... talking? To me? Like he wants to tell me something? Sounds like this is important. Before, I thought it was just a joke about McCain not knowing what email is."

user-pic

I like this ad better than the 2 minute ad. The language is crisper and Obama looks rested.

The real difference to me is the eyes, they have it more like he is looking right into the camera. I find this ad could be very affective.

Sheer beauty,,,,,,,,, FDR without the cigarette holder and Fala.

When you have a WIDE gap on a particular subject you try to REINFORCE it. You can do that by touting YOUR positives on the subject. Mac isn't relevant when it comes to that.

user-pic

This is okay, but Obama's clear and contnuing reuctance to attack McCain is a problem. He needs to condemn McCain for having supported all the policies that have brought disaster under Bush and that Pres. McCain would not mean we get more of the same, but that things will get even worse.
