New McCain Ad Portrays Palin As Obama's Prey

McCain is up with a new ad that depicts Obama's oppo-researchers as hungry wolves in the hunt for Sarah Palin -- an effort to depict Palin as victim and Obama as predator:

The ad, as usual, is full of distortions and falsehoods. The narrator's claim of "completely false" attacks on Palin comes from a FactCheck.org examination of Internet rumors about Palin, having absolutely nothing to do with Obama. And the Wall St. Journal report of opposition researches headed to Alaska -- as if researching your opponent were wrong -- was a reference to Democratic operatives, not the Obama campaign specifically.

Separately, those with extremely long memories will recall that four years ago, the Bush-Cheney campaign -- including current McCain adviser Steve Schmidt -- also used images of wolves in an ad sliming John Kerry. In that case, the wolves represented terrorists.

This time, however, the goal is not to portray Obama as weak a la Kerry, but as threatening. So the wolves are Obama's oppo-folks, out to savage Palin.

haha! So lame!

An ad entirely about the process of running for President, not one thing about an issue.

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

It's actually very smart and shows the McCain campaign is running circles around the Obama folk.

Dream on troll. Who is running for president, McSame or Palin? People won't fall for this for very long. By adding empty pantsuit Palin to the ticket, he just bought himself a couple week's bounce until everyone figures out what she is about. Amazing to me, how 'the vaunted war hero', Grampy McSame is hiding behind Sarah Palin. I took an oath to support and defend my Constitution too. I know in my heart that the real heroes actually came back in a box. The rest of us just survived.

You and your ilk will be crying in your momma's aprons on November 5th.

He's a troll because he thinks McCain ran a smart ad? I thought it was very effective. Remember who they're aiming those ads at. Palin's only job is to hold the base while McCain makes a "rational" appeal to undecided voters. With the base rallying to Palin, McCain can run against Bush, the Congress -- even the Republican Congress. You should apologize for calling that man a troll.

I'm glad this was posted twice. It made me doubly happy.

Hate to say it, Victor, but the troll is right. McCain is running rings around Obama. The negative memes are beginning to set up like concrete before Obama even gets an ad out. That spells Kerry '04 if Obama and his team don't start controlling the debate and the airwaves. Next week could even be too late. This stuff can't continue any longer. Obama has to launch a barrage that rocks McCain on his heels.

Smacks of desperation on the part of McCain.

They're unrolling ads faster than you can shake a stick at.

Oh dear. Is that sexist?

When is the comment feature going to be fixed?

McCain must be petrified by what he has learned about his running mate recently. In this ad he admits she wasn't vetted, and demands that no one else investigate the woman who very well could be President.

user-pic

sexism.... hmmmm.... if we pause to think about it, they'll be on us with the next ad!

This campaign has reached its utter "depth" in sick laughter, pathos, and degradation. I'm running out or words to describe the vile, despicable, disgusting, shameful... ok... I could get into swearing... but I'm restraining myself like Barack.

These folks are lower than low, sicker than sick, more evil than evil, more shameful than shame.

Words fail. And the whole world is watching!!!!!

user-pic

One more reason to donate!

Are they trying to get us to donate?

Weak. Weak. Weak. lol

that's sexist. what, poor sarah can't defend herself? she'd just shoot the wolves from a helicopter.

i actually think that's why they used the wolves, to imply that Palin can 'shoot these attackers'

user-pic

I personally hope the wolves of the oppo research start taking shots at her out of helicopters.

I hope they tear her to pieces!

user-pic

Ohhhh, Sarah is a victim. Please don't be mean to the poor little lipstick-wearing pit bull. She's delicate!

user-pic

My god = I never saw such a delicate flower that she has to have all this goddamn protection from McLame - the old lecher.

user-pic

boy... even judges are after her!

That's why they picked her instead of an old Texas battle ax like Kay Bailey Hutchinson (sp?).

Please let me hear someone tell me this has NO racial connotation at all: predatory black man threatening innocent and defenseless white woman...

right.

If you believe that I got a lovely recently built bridge to nowhere to sell you at a bargain price!

Don't worry.

Sen. Steve Cohen will call them out on this. Just like he did yesterday in the House of Representatives:

"I submit to you, Mr. Speaker, um, that the parties have differences, but if you want Change, but if you want change, you want the Democratic party, uh, Barack Obama was a community organizer like Jesus who our, uh, minister prayed about, uh, Pontius Pilate was a governor."

user-pic

that cohen guy obviously doesn't love jesus enough. what's his problem?

user-pic

maybe governor palin can have that jews for jesus guy talk to him.

I too think the comparisons to JC and Pilate are strained and ridiculous.

However, that's called a red herring. It's not what we're talking about and frankly it's besides the point.

This thread is about the current RACIST DOG WHISTLE ad that McCain just dropped that very clearly insinuates that Obama is a dangerous black man preying on an innocent white woman. Lest we forget what that insinuation has meant historically in this society, please read: http://www.strangefruit.org/

The combination of this and yesterday's 'sex ed' ad are precisely the kinds of abominations of intelligent discourse Obama's campaign and class represent a break from. America deserves better than that and honestly it NEEDS better than that. This country is facing real challenges that don't have easy solutions and bullshit like this (and your above red herring) is the hurdle we need to overcome if we're to have any chance of solving them.

I'm sorry but I think you don't get it.

This is called tit-for-tat. The job of McCain is to bury Obama with attacks like this with the sole purpose of being on the defense ALL THE TIME. This is exactly what's happening.

Meanwhile, he's on the stumping "stealing" the change message, while Obama is battling this.

So I cannot believe the idiots here who reflexively hide behind the "racist" mythology. Do you have no brain and not see how this works??

You are reacting, idiots, and you are reacting in a way that doesn't help him.

Yeah, like this campaign will be determined by the TPM comments section. Right.

Bullshit. YOU don't get it if you think this is somehow just a ""racist" mythology" as you put it. America has a long and complicated racial history and this is the first time a non-white person has been this close to winning the presidency so it's real. It's VERY real. That's the point of ads like this: to play off of that history and gain as much benefit as possible from it.

This and the ad yesterday are as distasteful, insulting and downright wrong as anything in politics. If it wasn't a political campaign I'd be all for a good old fashioned ass whooping in reply!

Instead, he should slaughter them with factual attacks which remove any positivity that remains connected to the McCain brand.

While I agree in general with the concept of staying on the offensive and not playing defense to every attack sometimes you have to pick up the blitz if you're going to complete a pass downfield. In order to go on the attack, Obama
has to neutralize some of the more ridiculous attacks against him otherwise they will dominate the coverage and not his attack.

His biggest weakness here is that Americans like their politics to be simplistic and appeal to the lowest common denominator like much of our culture. We generally don't like nuanced and complex things and certainly not nuanced and complex solutions to problems! As a result, appeals to stupidity like 'he eats babies!' can work if not smacked down harshly while factual and competent explanations of policy usually falter even when they can't be rebutted successfully simply because they aren't easy to digest or fit into a simple slogan.

Should I be fauxly outraged?

Nah, Obama is always right. Everyone else is always wrong.

Good. Guess I don't have to worry about your rectitude, then.

BTW, Carnahan was right too.

Man, PUMA sure does let out early.

user-pic

PUMA my ass.

Try Repug -

Same dif. PUMAs are a wholly owned subsidiary of the Republican party. They divide neatly into witting and un-witting Republican tools.

So Obama is a wolf, Palin is a pig, and McCain is a fish.

This is hilarious.

Old McCain had a farm....

user-pic

Barracuda Man! The new comic book hero!

Let me guess, they haven't announced where this ad will run and the size of the buy, but expect to run it in key battleground states and on national cable.

Stop POSTING THIS BULLSHIT for them.

user-pic

Post it only when it's fact that it's actually going to get aired. Otherwise, free publicity for McCain.

I am still living in Bizarro world apparently. Up is down, right is wrong, McCain is pissed that Obama is vetting his opponent, etc.

Basically she can give it but not take it. She's not a pit bull, she is a lap dog ankle biter who barks all day.

I have not seen the ad. But judging from the description, this is not a weak ad... even if it wasn't effectively done.
Here's the description I got: A black man being depicted as an animal stalking the helpless white woman.
Someone's blowing a whistle to get out the real animals. This is not weak... it is a pattern of vitriol that started with approval of the confederate flag in the 2000 election.

You probably won't see this analysis on any media outlet. Clearly, the Obama campaign won't raise it (maybe David Paterson will).

This stuff makes me angry as hell. I don't laugh off ads like this because they go quite a distance in "firing up he base". This is Rovian 101. I don't laugh at this crap because unfortunately, it works. And the thing that bothers me is that nothing can be done about it.

I'm with you: I see nothing funny about this.

user-pic

Good point. And the thing you need to remember with the dog-whistling is that it will NEVER get covered as an intellectual concept in the mass media... and the people who are thinking these things up know that for a fact.

Sure, there will be blogs, there will be the guy in the bar talking about it, etc... but unless you really go over the imaginary line (a la the 'Call me, Harold' ad)... it's just not going to get any sort of attention at all. So the lesson for Republican ad men is, knock yourself out.

Lighten up, folks. The McCain camp can't go from claing Palin's a pit bull who took on the good ole boys in AK, and will take them on in Washington, to complaining about undetectable sexismin an offhand comment of Obama's.

Even the MSM (McCain Supporting Media) will laugh this one out of the room, won't they?

I dare you to hold your breath while waiting for that to happen...

Am I the only person who thinks the wolf imagery has a double meaning?

One definition of wolf:

"A man given to paying unwanted sexual attention to women."

It's a pattern: like yesterday's sex-ed smear, this ad is designed to play on the age-old stereotype of black men as sexually rapacious and dangerous.

I concede that this observation is a bit conspiratorial in light of this morning's lipstick nonsense.

"Wolf" is also a term for a man who rapes and "owns" other men in prison. Don't think most people are aware of that, though.

how 'bout an ad that portrays as mccain as the aging ex-husband who's constantly parading his much-younger new "partner" around?

user-pic

This is short. But fits your comment perfectly.

Just click and follow the links:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/asking-her-to-dance.php

Also, we need to remember this may not just be McCain/Palin vs Obama/Biden. This could be McCain trying to score points with Palin. "Oh don't worry sarah, I will protect you." Could it be? Dirty old man coming to save her?

Translation:

Ohhhhhhh the BIG SCARY BLACK man is coming to get the poor defenseless white woman. WATCH OUT!

This is offesive and racially motivated as the terrible ads they ran against Harold Ford in Tennessee.

They have no shame....i am surprised they didn't color in his teeth gold a'la Flavor Flav.

user-pic

Poor John -- he is VERY AFRAID or he wouldn't feel the need to DEFEND Palin.

user-pic

She's the one who raised lipstick as a talking point in the first place = that was her big goddamn joke in her speech.

She doesn't like having it turned back on her - and too fucking bad.

user-pic

This is what I thought. The woman already called herself a dog (of the female variety). She's one lame pitbull if she needs to be protected from Obama.

Also, it seems to me that it's not just the Ds who have been psychologically tripped up here. The point of the VP nominee is to go after the presidential nominee. People don't even know who she is and they are making protecting her the linchpin of the campaign? This is nuttiness.

All of this hysteria makes me think the McCain Camps' internal polls aren't looking so good. Attacking like you're down typically means you're down.

Pufferfish

The animal I'm thinking of is a shark. As in, McCain has jumped the shark.

user-pic

Barracuda Man?

user-pic

almost. how about:

"With this latest ad, The McCain Campaign has jumped the barracuda."

user-pic

Last week, Palin jumped the snark.

how 'bout an ad about how ron paul refused to endorse mccain today? republicans divided!!! in disarray!!

user-pic

This ad is the bookend to the sex education ad.

It's Willie Horton and "Harold, call me" all over again.

I look forward to the ad that tells us how much McCain loves to gamble, how much money he's spent, ending with a question: Do you want this man to gamble away your children's future?

Don't hold your breath. Eventually we will learn that appealing to the worst in us and not the best will win an election. I just wish that the stakes weren't so high this cycle.

In no way am I resigning to a fate of losing. I just wish there was enough of a cushion to change the way things worked and exposing this crap for the crap that it is.

user-pic

I get what you're saying.

This should be about issues. Instead, it's been hijacked to a race about personalities, and Obama, the decent individual that he is, is trying to turn it back to issues.

However, people don't vote on issues. They vote on personalities.

Attack McCain on his gambler's personality. His craven switching from one side of an issue to another because it's politically expedient.

Whatever.

Yep....they are playing on the nagative image/stereotypes that many have of black men. I knew this was coming.

Not much fighting power that pitbull, only a lot of whining and complaining, like a weak whimp. Less lipstick would probably help.

is this the usual ad release for pudit consumption? do we even know if this or the sex ed ad from yesterday is in rotation anywhere? anyone know?

Like desperadoes waiting for a train.

John McCain: the boy who cried wolf. (or, to his friends - you pitiful little fart.)

lol

Actually, it's the old POW who cried wolf.

Dontcha think they ruined the "victim" card by making her brag about being a pitbull??

I mean, which is it? If you can't handle the press and Obama, how are you gonna do staring down Putin?

Next up, a McCain ad portraying Obama tying Palin to the railroad tracks, twisting is evil little mustache with an evil grin.

Oh, the poor damsel in distress!

Maybe someone already asked this, but where in the world are Obama's ads. Obama is constantly playing defense here. What is the problem? We should be seeing the ads flying out of the Obama campaign. Instead, we see headlines like "Obama tells media enough is enough." Well great; he really told them. Come on Senator Obama, play to win.

user-pic

His ads are everywhere. Can y'all quit bitching about how he runs his campaign - he's gotten this far hasn't he?

We've registered 11 million new Democratic voters and the GOP has lost well over 600,000. All the polls are fucked up because they aren't accounting for the number of Democrats versus the number of Repugs voting - they're sampling Repugs too heavily to make the polls accurate.

Please stop bitching! I'm begging y'all.

*sigh*

user-pic

Exactly. I live in Michigan and Obama adds are all over the place....

Come on Senator Obama, play to win.

I get the feeling that Obama is a subscriber to the "Above the Fray, Not About To Get In The Gutter" school of politics. That school went moribund about 20 years ago. Unfortunately, that school forgot to teach the first rule of politics: if you want to change the system, first you have to WIN!

Here are a couple of rules from the new school:

1) Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing. (worked for Lomabardi)

2) Nice guys finish last. (worked for Stengel)

3) Most games are lost, not won (see Stengel)

4) Don't go swimming with sharks without a pack of dolphins. (worked for Flipper)

I completely agree with you Angler -- I have no idea who's in charge of Obama's message/advertising/opposition research team, but whoever they are, they freaking SUCK. They're totally outgunned by the McCain team. I mean, look who makes the news, day after day after day! Obama's getting clubbed like a baby seal. But what kills me are all the opportunities they refuse to capitalize on. My god, McCain has a 26-year-voting record in the house/Senate -- why on earth haven't they combed through it all and found bad or even seemingly bad votes to make political hay with? There has to be at least two or three? Umm, maybe even more? Duh?

I swear, Obama's total lack of the jugular makes HIM look like the wheezing 72-year-old.

user-pic

I love, love, love the AD.

It represents a major screw-up for McCain.

It makes Obama look strong and Palin look weak.

Palin is a victim.
Fine.
I'll feel sorry for her and vote for Obama because he is strong.

Rove was trying to anticipate Obama's next move and tried to cut it off.

But Obama's next move is too strong.

This is due to the fact that she is obviously an intellectual lightweight....or she'd be showing off her brain instead of her boobs.

When did she show off her boobs? I must have missed that picture.

This is a replay of the 2004 ad.

user-pic

O, the wolves prowling and be very afraid ad?

Hadn't thought of that. As I recall, that ad was a bust and I was panicking over it along with everyone else.

user-pic

I thought Palin was tough.

Why isn't she defending herself if she's so goddamned tough?

user-pic

She favors abstinence! Abstains from the press!

Some of the comments here gave me an idea for a better McCain ad:

Stick with the theme and have a pack of wolves seconds away from eating a scared and helpless Palin who is tied to a tree. And then...

[Cue the A-Team music!]

Here comes John McCain in full military garb, gunning down and bayoneting the wolves. He destroys them all and unties the helpless Palin.

Palin exclaims "My hero!!" and almost faints in the presence of his masculinity and awesomeness.

He then grabs her with one arm and he flies her to safety like Superman.

John McCain, fighter ace, comes flying to the rescue ... and crashes into the ground.

I like the crashing in idea.

I remember not too long ago this ad would have scared the beejeezus out of everyone. The fact that it is now viewed comically seems to indicate that negative ads, although effective, can be and have been overplayed by McPaleCain.

user-pic

That final image of McCain is really disturbing. Glowing, white light surrounding his head as the camera looks at him from below, etc. If that's not Deification, nothing is.

user-pic

Is Palin the little red riding hood and Obama is the big bad wolf?

I have had it with the McCain camp and their Palin is the "victim" campaign.

Obama should from now on hit McCain EVERY SINGLE day. This campaign is him vs McCain. Who gives a damn about Palin.

I want Obama to get back the big rallies with people chanting "Enough is Enough".

user-pic

If Princess Palin is soooooooooooooooooo afraid of wolves why doesn't she just shoot them? /snark

http://www.usnews.com/blogs/erbe/2008/09/08/sarah-palins-barbaric-wolf-slaughtering-policies.html

how about talking about Chairman JSOC agreeing with Obama's assessment of the situation in Afghanistan. At some point people simply have to admit this man has shown excellent judgement in assessing the foreign policy circumstances we face as a nation. Not only has he been right, he's been right before other key players and he's done so even when being ridiculed for it. That's called leadership. It's something in very, very short supply in our government and we need more of it.

user-pic

Yep.

And it's not as if the Repugs haven't been winning elections since 2001 on one issue alone: We can keep you safe.

The GOP has totallly dropped that - their big issue - because they could tell that Obama was really making mincemeat of it.

Obama once said the way to fight the smears was with the truth. Well the truth is McShame is a dishonorable man running a dishonorable campaign. He needs to start running ads calling McCain's honor into question. Starting today, since they both are taking a moratorium tomorrow.

A question for TPM - is this ad actually airing? If it's not, and it's just another one of those video dumps that they hope the press will cover... I wonder if it's better not to acknowledge these things.

I like Ambinder's approach, if there's no confirmed air-time buy, he doesn't link to the ads. Would TPM consider doing something similar?

that's a good point. Also, do networks have any rules about running false advertising?

Obama once said the way to fight the smears was with the truth. Well the truth is McShame is a dishonorable man running a dishonorable campaign. He needs to start running ads calling McCain's honor into question. Starting today, since they both are taking a moratorium tomorrow.

Poor McCain - he thinks he's Hannibal Smith, but he's really Howlin' Mad Murdock.

Take a look at "What Obama should say," a response by a reader to Andrew Sullivan's Atlantic.com post on McCain's integrity:

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/09/what-obama-shou.html

user-pic

yep if this ad isn't airing that TPM should NOT be putting it on their website.

user-pic

I'm reading the dog-whistle as even worse than others here:

If you have a wolf stalking the village, threatening the wimmen-folk, then what do you do? Shoot it. Perfectly justifiable.

The latest National Enquirer is out with a lot of sordid allegations of drug addiction and criminal activity relating to Palin's oldest kids. I wonder if this McCain ad is supposed to serve as a means to head off coming bad press. It's possible the McCain campaign wanted some anticipatory victimhood to offset what is coming.

Since there isn't a thread yet on the state level polling and EC count I'll post this here :

MADISON, Wis. -- Tuesday's primary marked exactly eight weeks until November's presidential election, and a new Wisconsin poll shows Democrat Barack Obama leading Republican John McCain in the state.

The poll from Strategic Vision shows Obama leading McCain by three points, 46 to 43 percent with 8 percent undecided.

The survey was conducted from Sept. 5 through Sept. 7 and has a margin of error of plus/minus 3 percent.

The results show a closer race than a similar poll in August, which showed Obama with a 5 point lead.

Take that!

user-pic

These ads are outrageous but they are incredibly effective at driving the narrative of the daily news cycle.

Obama should be releasing ads of his own every day and in them he needs to hit McCain hard on the following.

1. McCain/Palin's obstruction in Troopergate - not reform we can believe in

2. Palin's record of tax and spend in Alaskaa

3. We need an ad taunting Palin for not taking questions

4. McCain's failure to even show up for the cvote on the GI Bill

5. McCain's opposition to SCHIP and other programs that provide health care to poor children. (Why is health care not an issue in this campaign?! It should be gold for Obama, especially among centrist women!)

6. John McCain opposed honoring Martin Luther, King, Jr.

These are all low-hanging fruit - why are they being left to rot?

Hitting the nail on the head!

Obama can be disemboweling the whole McCain image right now with hard hitting and factually correct attacks. I can only hope the fact that they aren't doing so is a clever campaign strategy beyond my pay grade.

What the McCain camp doesn't realize is that Obama is not the predator that going to go after Palin. Its the 4th candidate that's not mentioned often in the media, and the candidate that was snubbed on having his own action figure.

Joe Biden.

Biden is going to eat Palin alive at the debates, and it will signal the full swing of the election momentum in Obama's court, and it will be over for McCain. Mark my words.

Yep....they are playing on the nagative image/stereotypes that many have of black men. I knew this was coming.

I wonder if this McCain ad is an anticipatory response to the National Enquirer that just came out. It contains sordid allegations about the Palins' two oldest children involving drug addiction and criminal activity. Perhaps the McCain campaign wanted to innoculate themselves with this ad by claiming victim status and frighten everyone into not noticing the nasty stuff.

Ok, possibly preposterous theory time:

Let us accept the liberal media bias as fact. Let this sloppy embrace allow us to consider this:

Palin Fatigue. By plastering her from one end of time to t'other, we are growing tired of Sarah Palin. It's been only a week, culminating in an interview that a. no one expects to be fair; b. is not likley to put ro rest any doubts; and c. will be as much about the interview as her.

Point c. is unique. We didn't have a real pathway to point c. in previous election cycles.

The McCain campaign and the MSM act though this is the only interview she will ever give, letting her be defined almost completely by the press.

At this rate, Palin Fatigue should be setting in beginning now, and really taking off after the interveiew. Shiny objects possess the fatal flaw of having a terribly limited shelf life.

The theory would contend that this was the plan of the MSM all along...

The MSM got burned by the GOP; many do not yet realize it, though Andrew Sullivan sure as shit came around. They would appear to have no self-interest in a McCain presidency.

Pax,
M.

Mark my words.

user-pic

Bizzare ad -- hasn't Palin hunted wolves from a helicopter? Palin as prey seems to undercut the "brave huntress" theme.

Suggest Obama campaign riposte with ad on the "real wolves" at Americans' doors: foreclosures, layoffs, management scandals, rising health costs. Good way to shift focus back to middle-class issues & point out irrelevance of 2004 wolf throwback (wasn't there an anti-Kerry wolf ad?) .

user-pic

Yes, this might work. Though I don't like casting wolves as evil.

I think Michelle Obama needs to come out and shed some Hillary-like tears over that outrageous kindergarten sex-ed ad -- talk about how much it hurt her as a mother of two young women. I think that would flip the umbrage meter 180 degrees.

I think McCain is jumping the shark with all this stuff. When Elizabeth Hasselbeck calls McCain out you know they've overreached.

I'm with Twin Planets. I expected to see Palin in a helicopter begin to strafe the wolves with exploding bullets.

Honestly, it's hard to believe these guys can take themselves seriously. But more terrifyingly, it's hard to see how the Dems can effectively counter this onslaught of lies and distortion. I feel like I have seen this movie before, and it gives me the shivers.

I think Obama should give a speech on lies and deception in the GOP presidential campaigns since 1988, mentioning the most glaring lies, including Swiftboat, and particularly highlight the big lie Team George Bush manufactured about McCain's adopted kid and then play up the fact that McCain, the former victim, has transformed himself into a villain by hiring those who helped victimize him in 2000 and turning his campaign into a factory of lies. He should then most forcefully refute every potentially damaging lie and misleading statement that the McCain campaign manufactured. In the speech, he should also tie the GOP's practices of misleading and lying to the public with failed policies of the Bush administration.

user-pic

You bring up a good point. Here's such a great distillation of the inherant decency gap between the two parties.... what would the republicans be doing to McCain right now if he was our nominee... specifically with the issue of him admitting to war crimes and condemning the US while a POW in Vietnam?

Just sit there and imagine who brutal they'd be hammering him right now. All the fucking surrogates going on Fox, going on this and that, bringing it up at every possible opportunity.

I'm not saying I want the Obama campaign to do that. In fact if they did, I'd lose a major amount of respect for him... but still, it's infuriating.

Does it not interest anyone that these ads, which normally air no more than 10 days to a month before the election, are airing 53 days out?

Either there's worse coming, or the internals on their polling don't look good so they have to start scaring people early.

And really, trying to have it both ways on Palin (she's tough/she's a victim) really isn't reconcilable in the minds of a lot of Americans.

cromartie, I think they are scared. They can see their "Hail Sarah" pass isn't going to connect. The bump wasn't enough and is already starting to fade.

Remember, it's clear that they chose her in the first place because they KNEW they were losing and their only chance to win was a desperate gamble.

Her long-term effect is just to make McSame look old and weak. Not only is he hiding behind her skirts, he won't even campaign without her any more because he knows he'd draw embarrassingly small crowds on his own.

user-pic

I think it's mostly indicative of the fact that McCain, and republicans as a whole, have absolutely NOTHING to run on this time around outside of attacks, grinding Obama into the ground, and generally creating an environment of chaos to confuse people so that they don't know what's up or down.

Say what you want about Bush in both his runs, but they did have legitimate issues to run on both times, and they did that to some extent. Even if you wanna say banning gay marriage was a legitimate issue to run on, it's still an 'issue'.

Distorting FactCheck.org

This is fairly ironic, isn't it? The McCain ad superimposes quotes from Factcheck.org over a picture of Obama saying that attacks on Palin are "misleading" and "completely untrue." The implication is that these attacks have come from Obama and Factcheck.org refuted them.

However, those quotes come from a Factcheck.org posting refuting some of the Internet rumors that have circulated about her. They have nothing to do with anything Obama has said about her.

How sad is it when a campaign can't even use Factcheck.org citations without twisting them?

Obama needs the "John McCain is a Liar" ad so bad right now. Something shocking and narrative-defining, rather than just more defense.

Let them be the ones getting outraged by hardball politics for a change.

Hum, the banking system is collapsing and an ad about wolves in Alaska....

The ad has no substance--it just casts Sarah Palin as a little red riding hood--she's a fairy tale.

They'll try it again if Biden doesn't go easy on her in the debate. The McP team wants it both ways; she's tough as a pitbull with lipstick and shoots wild animals but then she's a delicate lady to be defended from the newshounds doing their own vetting.

this all gives me an idea for an ad. Show a pair of parents in a kitchen late nite going over their bills (credit card, college, foreclosure). One of them notices that on the kitchen tv, there is a negative McCain ad on, so they change the station, and they get another negative McCain ad, and after they change the channel a few times with the same crap ads on every channel, they just turn the tv off. Cut to Announcer:
"McCain may have the luxury of ignoring the hard problems that American families face, but do you?"
no music by the way. this ad needs to be serious.

It strikes me that these daily ads are aimed at controling what the media is talking about and not the public.

Absolutely. As ridiculous, mind-melting, and flat out idiotic as the 'lip stick' thing is, it's still serving as an incredibly effective tool for the republicans at getting the meme of sexism against Palin into the public dialog.

I might be wrong—Lord knows I can rarely tell how these things will play with other folks—but this ad just didn't strike me as very effective. B team work at best.

Why doesn't Obama beat them at their own game? He could put his own "wolf" ad out. Just show the aerial hunting of wolves videos which Palin champions with some reference to how fair they "hunt".

Or how about an abortion ad using their own words as such:

You know John McCain is against women making their own choices but did you know Governor Palin is against women making their own choices even in the brutal cases of rape and incest?
You know what I say? I say "thanks but no thanks" to McCain/ Palin and their leadership to ...."Nowhere".

You know the voice over they could use, the soft , deep voice of a women and show some unflattering clips or footage of each candidate. Repubs are always stealing their opponents ideas and phrases and getting to work against them.

We gotta play this game too! it's easy and it's juvenile but it works. Who the hell is doing his ads ?

The Obama campaign can turn all this victimization around with one simple question:
Why is John McCain hiding behind Sarah Palin? He's hiding his "business as usual-ness" behind her newness, he's hiding his cowardly, personal and untruthful attacks behind the fact that she's a woman and his claims of sexism. Is this big, tough warrior afraid to campaign alone now? Will he bring Sarah Palin with him to the debates? This could be a singular drumbeat of the Obama campaign and is sure to get under the skin of "tough guy" McCain.

Hum, pit-bulls, pigs and now wolves. Where are the donkeys and elephants? Have they retired?

Good thinking! They should use a pack of evil donkeys instead of wolves.

rush, medved, hannity and other right wing wacko talk show host have been using the same "destroy" line for the last week. Methinks I see a concerted effort to deflect criticism from Ms. Palin.

I cant wait till this election is over because it is really starting to get sickening.

I love roy-flagg00's ad suggestion:

Team Obama should precede ads like the one above with a speech by Obama decrying the dishonorable campaign that Team McCain has been running, laying bare the lies that they have been manufacturing, tying them to the campaigns that W ran and W's failed policies (such as the Iraq War) to drive home the point that dishonest leadership is a national danger. This will hopefully give people a context to understand the point of the ads. I would love to see Obama conclude his speech with a version of Samifloo's line:

"Let us say "thanks but no thanks" to McCain/ Palin and their leadership to ...."Nowhere"."

What gets me is, so what???

Someone needs to be investigating this lady for heaven's sake! And that is the job of campaign...to do opposition research.

I didn't have time to read all the comments, and I'm sure this has been brought up, but doesn't this simultaneously play the race and gender cards. Big, scary black man chasing the poor, frail, pretty white girl.

Has anyone ever read To Kill a Mockingbird?

If this comment makes it to the board without a server error, I may get the vapors. (I'm starting to believe that the NSA domestic spying plan is jamming the site...clearly, I'm not the only one having problems. Anybody got any solutions to the blocks?)
I was delighted with the Palin choice from the get go because she is the polar opposite of any progressive thinker. Without question, she is also a moral relativist of the first order.
I was anticipating the loud and forceful sheize slinging, too. There is not a lot of big time scrutiny of such things up north and she was absolutely convinced she could knock 'em dead with same ol' same ol'.
So far, in reality, she's only been "hounded" by a pack of mice. Somebody better get her one of those little buzzers in case she's all alone when she finally drops on the trail so she can say she's "fallen and I can't get up."
I'm liking this, and it's going to get better.

Obviously, the McCain strategy is to go as negative and personal as possible, because that throws Obama off of his message of hope. If Obama responds, then it looks negative on his part, and doesn't make him look like a uniter. If Obama ignores the claims, then they have the potential for sticking.

I don't think McCain's camp cares that much that Palin is lying about the bridge to nowhere. In part, that is part of their plan, because that forces Obama to respond, and then they paint Palin as the victim.

Another part of the plan is to pain Palin as a victim. That is what the fake outrage about the pig comment amounts to. No matter how ridiculous the claim, they want to repeat over and over again that Obama is attacking Palin, that he has no respect for her, and therefore no respect for women. The strategy has its risks, because already the press sees the ridiculousness of McCain's claims, but it seems McCain plans to deal with this aspect by smearing the press as liberal and biased against Palin.

I cannot believe how fast the McCain camp has descended into a campaign even more negative than Bush's. It outrages me. I sit at the computer all day instead of working, hoping a reaction against this nonsense will start.

If Palin can't handle non-existent oppo researchers, how will she handle al-Qaeda?!

Wait did I miss something another shitty McCain ad that ignores the issues of the day. Leave it to Slick Sarah and the make believe Maverick.

Shouldn’t an ad have some grain of truth

How dare they use wolves! Why don't they show the piles of left wolves paws Sarah Palin is paying bounty on, why don't they show the wolves being run to death being chased down till they drop with exhaustion my airplane hunters. I don't care what your views on hunting are, this type of slaughter is just wrong. This is some bizarre practice Palin set in place.

How about her removing the Polar Bear from the endangered species list so it too can be hunt down. Nothing is sacred to this woman.

Not all animal lovers are PETA whackos, many are just normal folks who love their pets, and see Sarah Palin for the sadistic bitch she is, and these folks have started a new movement from around the world called "Woman Against Palin".

With each small group this woman is uniting against her, including a LOT of Kuciich supporters, I hope it puts Obama over the top big time come election day.

Trying to destroy her?! What is this, Dynasty? (More is here.)

"immediately following the filming of these wolves Sarah Palin shot them and their cubs from a helicopter" ;-)

I can't believe John McCain, a man I respect, would intentionally parade out "Black Wolves attacking a White woman". Coupled with the new "Barack Obama, child predator" ad, it's disgusting. Praying on irrational fears of Black men being a threat to our women and children - have we really fallen this far as a nation??? John McCain is a man of honor, and not a fear monger willing to do anything to get elected. Even though both of these ads close with the obligatory “I approve this message”, he certainly can’t approve. Would he lose a nation to win an election? I think not. He needs to do the honorable thing and pull the ads. This election needs to be about who is prepared to lead, not about who is prepared to lead us into the gutter of our worst possible ingrained fears and the racist divisions of a generation ago. I have been disheartened by the ridicule and mocking of community service coming out of his campaign, while at the same time Senator McCain’s acceptance speech was calling us all to service. But this, this should not stand. Please, please, Senator McCain - restore my faith in you. Please do the right thing, the honorable thing, and get your campaign back on message.

You don’t bring a knife to a gun fight!

The Republicans fights dirty always have. Why …because they know it works!

Are we going to lose this election because we won’t do that?? NO NO NO NO.. We can and must not lose this election because we didn’t want to get our hands dirty..Politics are dirty so go out there, fight dirty and win.
