New McCain Ad Falsely Suggests Obama Wants Kids To Learn "About Sex Before Learning To Read"
The McCain campaign is up with a new ad attacking Obama on education that makes some rather strong insinuations about sex:
There's a lot to chew on here. But we want to focus on one particularly pernicious aspect of it. The ad shows a dreamy-looking Obama as it says:
Obama's one accomplishment? Legislation to teach "comprehensive sex education" to kindergartners. Learning about sex before learning to read?
In a final moment of subtlety, the ad says Obama is "wrong for your family."
According to the McCain campaign's own email, the sex ed claim is based on Obama's support for a bill, in the Illinois state legislature, that said:
"Each class or course in comprehensive sex education offered in any of grades K through 12 shall include instruction on the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, including the prevention, transmission and spread of HIV."
As you can see, the McCain ad says that Obama was the one who pushed the "comprehensive sex education" measure. The Obama campaign has pointed out that the bill would simply add instruction on disease prevention to already existing Illinois sex-ed standards. But the McCain campaign cheerfully turned this into Obama's support for "learning about sex before learning to read."
And "civil" and "honorable" McCain approved that message.
Late Update: Obama spokesperson Bill Burton's response directly questions McCain's honor:
"It is shameful and downright perverse for the McCain campaign to use a bill that was written to protect young children from sexual predators as a recycled and discredited political attack against a father of two young girls - a position that his friend Mitt Romney also holds. Last week, John McCain told Time magazine he couldn't define what honor was. Now we know why."

Well they definitely threw down - this is going to be an all out Culture War.
Ok, they asked for it.

Great so let's sit around and wait for the Repuglicans to paint us any way we want. I'm not going to give another cent to the Obama campaign until he shows that he has a backbone and starts to defend himself. Ever since Palin, the Repuglicans have been completely controlling the narrative and the polls are showing that it is hurting us. When are we going to attack?
No wonder the country feels that they can trust the Repuglicans more for national security. Anyone thought what kind of a message we as Democrats are sending when we let the Repuglicans attack us with their lies? Makes the democrats look like a bunch of pansy pacifists. I a sick of losing elections and seeing the country go down the drain. We can't afford to let the lying Evangelista destroy this country.
I am sick of belonging to a party that does nothing while Repuglicans distort facts and win election after election. Attack and do whatever it takes to win this election.

I'm with you. No more money until Obama comes after McCain hard. They want me to go all in on the general and I won't even take their calls anymore.
THEY NEED TO GO ALL IN FIRST.
This new ad from the McCain camp is despicable and yet Obama will give a nuanced response in the press, send a few press releases, and so on. Damage done. The narrative becomes the damage. The press talks about it and plays right into McCain's hands. It all adds up as just more bad news and negative spin for Obama.
Folks, I have a bad feeling about this ad. It might be a ticking time bomb if not kicked to the curb fast; it feels like a Willie Horton one.
Why not kick some dirt in McCain's eyes for a change? The guy lies every single time he opens his mouth. Just show him and his quotes and have some carnival song and kids jeering, "liar, liar pants on fire." Is that so hard?

How about an ad about McCain dumped his first, disabled wife because she had gained weight after an accident, and applied for a marriage license with a rich, much younger woman before he was divorced?
Then show pics of McStain with Vicki Iseman. And run the video of him eyeballing Palin's ass in her intro speech.
Attack him on family values, morality, fidelity, and HIT BACK HARD!
I'm not giving another cent until I see Barack draw blood. Even worse, I'm not giving my time.

Drudge and the wingers are all upset that today Obama said "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."
Right wingnuts are hyperventilating, claiming that Obama called Palin a pig (since she owns the word lipstick now). Obama should stand by his statement and make it clear that Palin is the lipstick... and McCain is the pig.

All they have to do is take a splash of the perverse old man(pervert), two parts philanderer(cheating on his faithful wife), and one part predator(predilection for younger women - Hensley/Iseman), and shake well(attacking his adherence to the values he professes.)
THEN pull out the "Palin is the lipstick, McCain is the pig" ad.
Just hope there's a portable defib unit around the first time he sees or hears about it ...

GOD DAMN IT, TENA, STOP IT.
You throw "troll" accusations around these threads with completely reckless abandon, over and over and over. I've noted it several times in several threads.
CLEARLY, you didn't bother to check the profile of either ThatsHowISeeIt OR jcfinsf. If you had, you would have seen their history of blog posts and comments, and you'd realize why your "troll" accusation is beyond pathetic.
Checking someone's posts is ridiculously easy to do. Just click on their nick and it will take you to their profile page. It lists their recent blog posts and comments. You can get even more comment history by pasting "Posted by [insert-nick-here] site:talkingpointsmemo.com" into The Google.
But you just don't give a shit, do you. Anybody who posts anything you disagree with -- especially anybody who says ANYTHING remotely critical of Obama or his campaign, no matter its merit, is automatically a "troll" to you. It's beyond the cheap shot. It's disgusting.

I would be a troll... if I didn't point this out.
If we let this continue, we are doomed. We have to beat the Republicans at their own game if we intend to win this thing. Obama already has the voted of those who can digest reality and nuanced replies. What we need now is to take over the narrative and completely obliterate grandpa McCain's circus act.

I pledge the exact opposite of the commenters above -- I'm going to give more money to the Obama campaign and other groups working to free our country of the ravages of the Republicans!

Lord, do I ever co-sign this post.
Can we please calm down? Did you think this shit was going to be easy?? Do you have any idea of what we are up against?
A party that desperately wants to stay in power because they love power and don't want to be investigated.
A bunch of "journalists" who, if they are not cowed are complicit.
A populace where many are too busy and/or just trying to keep their collective heads above water and too many people who can be easily swayed by propaganda and racist appeals, no matter how broke they are.
Do we not realize that this is an insurgent campaign? Sure, people are pissed off about repubs, but they're not pissed enough. And it only took 5 years, when it should have happened sooner.
For months his campaign has been fighting. He has had to run a damned near flawless campaign even to GET this far. And now when it's tough...when the rethugs are living up to their name and slinging shit because that's all they have? When McKept and his country club set uses the racism of the rubes and easily led--people they despise?
And when Barack knows that he *still* must fight smarter, because of the double standards that will be held against him?
This is what his supporters become? Ranting and raving about the campaign when they're not ranting at some wingnut trolls who post their crap here? Threatening to take your ball and go home? And you want to know what we have in common with that?
IT'S PURELY MASTURBATORY!!!
Get tha' fuck outta here. MAN up! WOMAN up!
Yes, I shouted. But what are we doing? I'm giving money and collecting money. My Mom walks around with registration forms in her purse! Are you doing that? Are you working in the local campaign offices? On the steering committees?
I don't want to slam anyone here, because I believe 98% of the folks who post to this board are intelligent, passionate and only want what's best for our country. We don't want him to blow it! We've been so close before. I understand--in fact, I probably understand it better than most. But angry screeds aren't gonna cut it. They don't help.
This is no time to have a shit fit. That campaign needs money and volunteers and time more than ever.
Just consider. Then let your conscience and/or spirit be your guide.
As for me--it's time to drop another $250.

Thanks for the rational thought.
I want to say I'm shocked by the McCain ad, but deep down I've been waiting for it.
And my real question is . . . why is everyone from the Rachel Maddow show to TPM posting the full thing for viewing?
Why is there not a great outrage from the "news" outlets that a candidate for president is telling lies about kindergarteners and sex and not being called on the carpet?
This isn't an eighth grade name calling contest! The news shouldn't keep running back and forth between the two campaigns asking "did you hear what he said?"
AAARRRGH!
Obama does need to be pissed off, and show it. Let a little of the steam out on camera and it should be the opening line at the debate, "Senator McCain, have you lost your mind? You won't lose a war to win an election, but you'll mix sex and kindergarteners up to see what happens?"
THE INMATES ARE RUNNING THE ASYLUM, AND WE'RE GIVING THEM A PASS!

Relax, APeach. Some of us can do both.
Me, after working for Jerry McNerney in 2006, I'm turning my attention to two Congressional races in Republican districts in CA -- Charlie Brown in CA-4 against wingnut Tom McClintock, and Bill Durston in CA-3, running against incumbent wingnut Dan Lungren. The incumbent in CA-4, John Doolittle, is heavily implicated in the Abramoff scandal, is under investigation, may well be indicted, and announced in January that he was "retiring" from the House.
These guys are solid progressives who Obama will need in Congress to get done what we want done. And turning out voters in those districts will both help Obama electorally (although CA is a pretty safe D state in the Presidential) and help his party-building mission.
And you know what? I can still voice criticism of the Obama campaign, without it compromising my other activity.

I'm not sure Obama should lower himself to address this directly.
I'd have Biden expressing his extreme shock, anger and disappointment, and one or more ads in response to this one, directly going after McCain's dishonorable behavior and setting the record straight. Saturate media outlets with the facts and with the outrage. Ask questions as to why a supposedly good man would stoop this low.
In fact, I'd key off of all the compliments Dems have been giving McCain to really drive the point home with the contrast.

You have a good point. The best way is typically to let surrogates handle this while staying above the fray. But Americans also want to know the president is a fighter. Obama showing a spark, a little passion, might not be a bad idea.
September 9, 2008 10:45 PM | Reply | Permalink
Biden has the advantage of knowing McCain for 25 years. He can call him out in a way that could be more effective. We need to hear from Kerry, and someone should start leaning on folks like Hagel and Colin Powell. Ask them if this is what men of honor are like.
Two choices: (1) make yourself just as disgusting as the next guy and hope that you turn off fewer voters to the whole shit-scapade than the other guy does (and contradict everything you have been saying for a year); or (2) you shame the other guy (well you can belittle and humiliate him and make fun of him too) for being a dishonorable- politics-at-it's-very-worst-divider and you offer the voters something better.
McCain is taking a risk because he is branding himself as something different than politics as usual and then he does politics at it's worst x10. Maybe it pays off, maybe he gets called on it.
People think #1 is somehow a no-lose strategy. That strikes me as idiotic.
That said, I am now donating another $100.
Anyone else who doesn't is a coward. (OK donate whatyou can afford)

Except the culture war is a proxy and a red herring for the class economic war.
This nation is based only on one principle: free contract. In such a nation, bargaining power is everything. So everything that goes on around us is really about individuals or groups of individuals trying to increase their bargaining power: be it advertisements, politics or personal grooming habits.
Thus the only war is class warfare over bargaining power.
The upper class can't win that war in a democracy or psuedo-democracy such as ours - their numbers are too few. So they've spent tons of money turning it into a culture war, where they get the kind of numbers they need.
Everytime class warfare issues come up the Republicans claim the Democrats are trying to foment class-warfare like it's some big crime.
Obama to his credit says there is no culture warfare, we're all Americans.
I suppose it may be too late for this, but Democrats would do better to not except Republican framing. Cause that's how they get their numbers up. I would say, invest in changing the framing is more important than a 50 state strategy. Or at the very least, changing the framing makes the the 50 state strategy possible.
It is class warfare.
As Harry Truman said, "How many times do you have to get hit over the head until you figure out who's hitting you?"
and....
"If you want to live like a Republican..." say, own a single house, ..."you better vote for a Democrat."
September 10, 2008 6:37 PM | Reply | Permalink
I'd like to add:
What we have here in our politics is rolling reframing: Lipstick on a pig referred to policies (Cheney used it four years ago), but the Republican's are reframing it to refer to Palin...
The key is to get control of the reframing... Because the original reframing, and the only one that counts was taking the class warfare and turning it into a culture warfare.
Republicans can't win the former, Democrats can't win the later.

Age appropriate education. Nothing wrong with doing that.
I used to teach young children. I still recall the lady whose 3rd grade son was asking questions about sex... and already had quite a bit of info. But no, his mother was "going to tell him when he's ready."
A kid is ready when they ask questions. Children as young as 3 may ask where babies come from. And if you refuse to answer, you're giving them a message that asking that kind of question is taboo. On the other hand it is perfectly possible to provide info at the level the child understands.
A lack of info can lead to .... Briston Palin's pregnancy!

They realize that to insure the brightest futures for all of our children, we must teach them not just the three R's, but the birds and bees and beyond."

Go destroy those unpatriotic parasites destroying our country. McCain is a living breathing garbage can. Time to put his garbage out on display and show the Repuglicans for who they are.
What the hell is the Obama campaign waiting for? I am sick and tired of all the nuanced analysis and discussions. It is time to think outside the box (like the Repuglicans have done so well) and destroy the Republicans.
Run ads painting Grandpa McCain as a womanizing pedophile supporter. What the hell are we waiting for? Until we are 10 points down in the polls?
I am not doing a THING for the Obama campaign until it can show that it can stand up for itself and defend itself.

This ad is an indefensible life. But we have to pivot the issue off of any association between Obama and sex education aimed at children. The Obama campaign response here is excellent: bill was aimed at protecting children from sex predators, McCain lies about it to score political points, putting his Presidential ambition above the safety of children and demonstrating his lack of integrity and honor. McCain's lack of honor becomes the issue.

You need to be worried. Normally no one would ever believe such an ad. Why would they? Only an idiot would ever come up with such an idea. However, it has been the practice of the Republicans to consistently push such bullshit on the public with little if any reaction from the government.
Tonight, a friend of mine was at my store. We started discussing the election. He told me how he had to go against Obama. After all, Obama was not concerned that the Chinese were drilling for oil 7 miles off our shore. I also heard how he had just heard Palin talking about her record defeating the bridge to nowhere. (We live less than 20 miles from Lebanon, Oh - The Golden Lamb is indeed great - had my departure dinner there when I left government service.) Then I heard how Obama was going to raise everyone's taxes and socialize the entire United States starting with his health care program. Honestly believes the Republican propaganda over the years. He went on to state that the only reason health costs are higher in the US is because of medical malpractice.
When are the Democrats going to learn that the Republican noise machine is a 24/7 is a propaganda tool every second of every day whether it is election season or not. It is supported by a right wing news media, grass roots evangelical foot soldiers and well funded corporate base. We have never thought in such strategic terms, ignore all marketing and some how believe that the vast majority of the public will do the research to discover the truth.

Stranger, what you fail to realize is that it's the only place that we have a chance to win. If the nice candidate, the honorable candidate, the truthful candidate, the good candidate, the clean candidate, if that candidate EVER won, we wouldn't have had the last 4 years of George Bush.
Obama won't win by standing tall. Standing tall just makes him a bigger target for all the mud McCain is throwing his way, and as long as McCain is the only one throwing it, he will be the only one without any on him.

Let's not mix metaphors:
You say, "Never wrestle with a pig."
But this is a wrestling match. We don't have a choice about that. We must wrestle. As it turns out, our opponent happens to be a pig.
But if we don't wrestle, then we lose by default.
That's what's at stake here.

You said it yourself. McCain wants to stir up dissension - among supporters.
Folks, we are rightly outraged. But we need to keep our cool as well. Our guy has a cool and level head. We're going to do our best to win this. But we also need to win with dignity.

Thera, much love and respect, but what will your integrity be worth when John McCain takes the oath of office on January 20, 2009?
September 9, 2008 9:16 PM | Reply | Permalink
You should ask the converse of your self - If you impunge your honor and integrity and Obama is elected, of what worth is you honor and integrity then?
Our President runs for re-election every four years and only gets two terms. Who you are sticks with you much longer for most.

So did McCain vote against this bill to protect children from sexual predators? Is there an ad there?
Or is it just that R's who voted for the bill voted to protect children, while D's who voted for it wanted to pollute children's minds?

It is an impossibility for a true progressive to support Palin. Oh, no wait, maybe they can get the Progressives for Thatcher to fly over from England to give them some pointers on how they can politically support someone is against all of their basic principles.

I'm sorry, but any woman who is willing to hand over control of her reproductive rights to the government is neither progressive nor feminist.

That was from Shakesville, and they are *not* supporting Palin politically. They're not suggesting anyone vote for her. They're saying people shouldn't be sexist, not that people should be idiots.

Alan Keyes first used this attack in the Illinois primaries. Barack Obama explained what it was that the vote was for. The Illinois voters understood. Evidently Mitt Romney didn't. He brought it back up in the primaries this year.

this is all part of the effort to make the campaign about obama being an extremist and "not one of us."
this ALL has racist overtones. that has been mccain's goal from the start. it's all about race. hillary knew this when she said she was more electable, she just couldn't give the reason why. the one thing the gop understands is just how racist this country is and they are doing everything they can to exploit it. i am a solid obama supporter but i think his road is going to be far more difficult than most people realize.

Well at least this ad has the "Palin effect" on me; I instantly made another donation to the Obama campaign (just as I did right after Palin's convention speech). And I'm sure quite a few other BO supporters have done/will do so in response to this ad, no? Sure, those right-wing nutjobs may be being rejoiced to see the ad, but I think it really makes Obama supporters angry and fired up as well.
Barack, get pissed off! Don't ever look dismissive. Attack!

Responses should come in the debates. It is not enough to be right on the issues. Obama must define McCain and make it stick. Every day, same definition.
Bush is Roy Rogers. McCain is his sidekick, Gabby Hayes. Palin is Dale Evans, queen of the cowgirls. Why turn the future into a farce?

I can't believe the stupidity of your comment. Let's review:
You can't even read, can you Hussein? There is a difference between having weaknesses and being weak.
Intelligence is not one of Obama's weaknesses, and as far as I can tell he got where he is by being smart. But being smart can be it's own weakness. Just as actually being honorable. Now is not the time for intelligence or honor. This is an election.
Really? You really think this is some sort of competition between me and Barack Obama? Really? You think I need to worry about Barack Obama "hustling the living fuck right out of my ass"? What world do you live in? You're right, I have no idea what Obama can do, because he hasn't fucking done anything. Why don't you tell me what he can do.
Can he shoot fireballs out of his mouth? Can he bend the minds of men? What exactly can Barack Obama do? More importantly, when is he going to do it? Before November I hope.

It had better be before mid-October, because as one commentator pointed out this morning, with so many places in the country now offering early voting, where the polls are by about October 15th is pretty much going to determine the outcome of the election.
