Memo To Charlie Gibson: Here Are Some Tough Questions For Palin

The Anchorage Daily News, which knows Sarah Palin as well as anyone, weighs in with an editorial today posing some tough questions that Palin should be forced to answer:
* Why have you reneged on your earlier pledge to cooperate with the Alaska Legislature's investigation into Troopergate?...* As governor of Alaska, you have not pushed for laws or regulations that put your personal views on abortion, same-sex marriage and creationism into public policy. As vice president, will you push to outlaw abortion, restrict same-sex marriage and require the teaching of creationism?
* If you were a fully qualified vice-presidential candidate from the get-go, why did you wait more than 10 days to face reporters?
*McCain spokesman Rick Davis told Fox News the media didn't show you enough "deference." How much deference do you expect to get from Vladimir Putin or Hugo Chavez?
* You have said victory is in sight in Iraq. In July 2007, when you visited Kuwait, you said, "I'm not going to judge the surge." In the March 2007 issue of Alaska Business Monthly, you were asked about the surge and quoted saying:
"I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. . . . While I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place."
Define "victory" in Iraq? What is the exit plan?
To that last one I would only add: If you were saying only a year ago that you hadn't focused on the war in Iraq beyond wanting to know that we have an exit plan in place, why should we see you as qualified for the gig of back-up commander-in-chief right now?
When ABC News' Charlie Gibson does his exclusive interviews with Palin, we'll find out whether this big-shot news anchor is anywhere near as tough a questioner as the little Anchorage Daily News is. Prediction: It won't even be close.

I think your prediction is, unfortunately, true.
Thanks for this, though, Greg.
And thanks to the Anchorage Daily News. They've been doing a flippin' fantastic job covering Palin. It's refreshing.

How about these ideas regarding Marshall's question regarding what kind of character is Palin like?
Walter Mitty?
The central character in "Catch Me If You Can"?
Elmer Gantry?
Harry Powell in "Night Of the Hunter"?
How about "Filth: The Mary Whitehouse Story"?
To learn more about Palin, you can look at this on the IMDB:

How about Oz, the Great and Powerful Oz? And behind the curtain Palin is nothing but a discombobulated old man working the levers?

I was thinking of Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) in "Breakfast at Tiffanys". She was extremely likeable but everything she said was false. She'd created a totally false persona.
And there's a slight physical similarity, possibly just the hairstyle.

No, no, no.
Wrong questions(except for the last one). Completely wrong. This is exactly the wrong strategy
These questions are way too general, allowing for platitudes in response. The more specific the questions are, the more she will squirm.
Don't ask about reneging on a pledge. Too general. Ask why wasn't/isn't X, Y, Z done. Has to be very specific.

Maybe so, but it's likely that Gibson's will be far more vague than these questions.

Yes -- the more specific the better. Get into the details on domestic policy such as healthcare. Do you support community rating, and if not why not?
There also has to be at least one "test" question. Something like when Bush was asked to name the prime ministers. Preferably something domestic because she should be up on it from her time as Governor. How about "What is the SS tax rate, what amount of income is subject to it, and what percent of Americans earn in excess of that amount?" It can be anything really; so long as it's out of nowhere.

Video of Dexler Clark, vice chairman of Alaska Independence Party stating Palin was a member before she was mayor of Wasilla. So, between her husband being a recent member, her being a past member, people should really question exactly where her loyalty lies. Watch the footage around 6 minutes into the video.

All the questions are going to be a juggling a family and a career, Trig, moosehunting, and her mavericky ways. He'll then throw in a, "Do you think you are experienced enough to be vice president?", to which she'll respond, "I do", followed by an attack on Obama's experience. It's going to be a joke. But . . . I thought you were opposed to the media vetting Palin? I thought probing her background is dangerous for the democrats and will only make her more popular and make folks hate Obama. According to you, the press should only be asking questions like "what's your favorite cookie recipe?" and doing it with a lot of deference.
September 9, 2008 10:45 AM | Reply | Permalink
That's not true.
I'm opposed to liberals using "vetting" as a campaign tool to take her down. I'm on record on this very site saying it would backfire - and it did.
This list of questions is just politically loaded blah-blah Keith Olberman style. Any politician would need 5 seconds to get it out of these questions.
Maybe these people need to replay the Obama youtube clip where he talks about doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?

Actually a skilled politician can get out of any question on the first go around. It is the follow up question that ties the answer to the original question in a way that doesn't leave the politican room to squirm free. It is the lack of the follow up question that makes these type of interviews so frustrating to watch.
September 9, 2008 10:59 AM | Reply | Permalink
The lack of follow-up, and the ridiculous habit of asking questions that have six parts to them, so the politician just chooses the one that will put them in the best possible light and ignores the rest.
We've seen this for at least 7 years, and I see no sign that it's going to change.

- and keep the abortion/gay marriage question from ADN.
September 9, 2008 11:37 AM | Reply | Permalink
That's a start. I suggest you formulate a question. It's a good form of discipline, or are you suggesting asking what is your energy policy?
How important do you think it is to ask questions that reveal how much the candidates actually know (I'm not talking quizzing them on the names of obscure foreign leaders)?
For example, what share of the federal budget is non-defense discretionary spending? What share of the Federal budget is composed of earmarks? The Citizens for Government Waste "Pig Book" estimates "pork" accounts for $17 billion in FY 2008; non-defense domestic discretionary spending is about 18% of the $2.6 trillion budget. Should a candidate for President of VP know that? Should the American people?
How important is it to you to understand how they think? Or formulate policy, rather than the official position of the campaign.

You disagree with Senator McCain on climate change and doubt that it was caused by human activity. What is the basis for that belief and have you discussed that disagreement with the Senator?
What is your understanding of the role Fannie and Freddie play in the mortgage market? Why did you say they had become too expensive for taxpayers? What other steps would you like to see the next administration take to regulate the mortgage market?
You said you didn't know what the Vice President does. What is your current understanding of the job responsibilities? Have you talked with Senator McCain about what your role will be in the administration?
Aside from drilling, what steps would you take to decrease America's reliance on foreign oil?

Palin by nature is an absolutist who has media training and experience. She is not going to get rattled by aggressive questioning. She will come off as confident and competent in terms of appearance and demeanor. That is going to be the initial spin and it will satisfy the Republican base.
The content of her answers is another matter and we shouldn’t expect the media to critique that effectively.

This is not a gotcha moment. It is an absolutely critical part of a functioning democracy. I'd ask her where she stands on the veto threat from President Bush on SCHIP expansion. Senator McCain supported the veto because he didn't want to "socialize" healthcare, but expansion of the program was very popular with voters and Democratic and Republican governors. As Governor of Alaska she should be very familiar with the issue and there's no excuse to not have a position. If she supports Bush & McCain veto, would be an excellent talking point for those Reagan Dems, parents and Hillary supporters.

I would throw out there the possibility that he might pose some tough questions on the second day (day one with be all who-is-Sarah fluff). The only reason is that there has been such a build up to this interview, and given the public's interest (in the US and abroad) in this particular general election, Gibson knows the world will be watching him as much as her. He might, just might, have a little bit of journalistic pride deep inside of him, and not wanting to become a news media pariah (the others will love the opportunity to bash the competitor ABC).

You are running on a theme of shaking up Washington even though you party has been in power for 8 years. Which republican elected officials do you think should not be re-elected? Do you support Ted Stevens re-election to the US Senate? Do you support Don Young's re-election? how about Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell and John Boehner of KY?
What official business do you children engage in and why have you asked the taxpayers of Alaska to fund their travel?
When you were mayor of Wasilla did you actively lobby the Federal government for subsidies for your town? Do you think this is a wise use of Federal taxpayer dollars? Should all mayors in America do the same thing?
Alaska gets about $1.70 from the Federal Government for every dollar it sends to the Federal Government. Do you think this is fair to the rest of the states?
Alaska has the lowest per capita tax burden of any US state and has for the last 25 years. If it is wrong for the Federal government to subsidize Alaskans, when do you plan to raise state taxes?
What are the biggest public needs in the state of Alaska?
Why didn't you return the $200 million for the Bridge to Nowhere boondoggle to the people of the United States? Did you use the money to build a road where the bridge would have been?
As mayor of Wasilla and governor of Alaska did you ever raise taxes? Which ones?
Do you think the Constitution protects the right to privacy and what does that mean to you?
Is the fourth amendment to the constitution important to you, and why? If today, the police caught a man trying to plant a bomb on a public bus in Anchorage, should they bother reading him his rights?
Do you think local officials should have the right to ban books of fiction from libraries as they see fit?
What policies of the Bush administration do you disagree with the most?
What were the reasons the US went to war in Iraq? Would you use similar reasoning to decide if the US should go to war in the future?
Was the cost of the war in lives, casualties and dollars worth it?
Is an increase in the price of gas a good thing?
Should the US burn more or less fossil fuels? How would burning more fossil fuels in the U.S. affect global warming.
You said you stood up to oil companies in Alaska, the policy of the McCain administration is to cut their taxes (by lowering corporate taxes)and give them new rights to drill oil in previously protected areas. How is this not exactly what the oil companies want?
You enacted taxes on oil companies in Alaska, should the federal government increase taxes of oil companies?
How would you describe your own knowledge of geopolitics?
How would you describe your own knowledge of American history?
Why did you never travel outside of the United States or Canada during the first 43 years of your life? Do you think more Americans should travel abroad. Do you think Americans should try to learn another language?
What is the difference between the Shia and Sunni Muslims? Does it matter to US policy?
Do you think there are jobs Americans just won't do no matter how much they are paid? Do you think any of the hard working people of Alaska would be unwilling to pick lettuce in Arizona for $50/hour? What kinds of jobs would Alaskans be unwilling to do for say $50/hour? How much do you think migrant farm workers are paid an hour in Arizona to pick lettuce?
This could go one forever....

That's why he was chosen to play the role of a journalist on TV in this pseudo-interview propaganda event.
He will ask questions that have been carefully prepared in collaboration with the Rove-Palin campaign to give Palin the opportunity to recite her scripted answers and reinforce her fake, phony, made-for-TV persona.
If anyone seriously thinks he is going to pay attention to what questions some two-bit Alaska newspaper thinks he should ask, let alone what people posting comments on a blog think he should ask, let alone what a basic sense of journalistic integrity would require him to ask, they are seriously deluded.

If/when she is ever interviewed by a real journalist, a good question would be:
"What books did you want banned from the Wasilla library and why?"
September 9, 2008 11:32 AM | Reply | Permalink
This is not an artful question sincethere is no record that she a particular book in mind. Wants she admits to is asking a hypothetical question that she can and will easily deny meant she intended to ban a book. Or she could just say something like she meant to ban "Teen Hustler" magazine or something so offensive it would be hard to contradcit.
So the substitute: Do you think is it appropriate for government officials to ban books from public libraries? It is yes or no, how she answer will reveal plenty.

Maybe he won't act that outrageously this time.

I want to know why Sarah Palin's husband is with Mcain/Palin during all the campaign trail stops??? So if the husband is with the wife traveling all over, who's with the kids?

Eve Harrington!
Doesn't she have one or more brothers in the pokey? Or is that just another vicious rumor?
What are the birthdates of the minor daughter and her 18-yr-old bf? If they've been dating for over a year, as claimed, there may or may not be a case for statutory rape.
How does SHE plan to unite the country? Will SHE join McThuselah in reacing across the aisle to the "Democrat Party"?
The Treason Party is thrilled to have a celebrity at last, someone to distract from the issues. Their sense of resentiment is palpable. It really IS about getting their own back, not about governance and definitely not about policy.
They shd remember the old rule: Be careful what you wish for. The diference between popularity and notoriety may be closer than they think.

Another Gibson question:
"Governor, why are your pants on fire? (Not that there is anything wrong with that.)"

shhhh. youre not supposed to ask about her kids? Don't you know she is a perfect mother? You are not even supposed to ask why her husband is not at work in the North slope? Nothing. Just accept her because Mccain has chosen her and he is right because he was a POW.

Here's the one I think Josh might be trying to remember:
"A Face in the Crowd" is a 1957 movie directed by Elia Kazan, starring Andy Griffith as "Lonesome" Rhodes. Quite a few similarities.

Gov Palin: You've talked about your husband, the "first dude" as a member of the United Steelworkers Union. Do you support the rights of workers to join unions, and, more specifically, do you support the Employee Free Choice Act, even though expanding the rights of workers to organize runs counter to just about everything for which your party stands?

There are 2 days of questioning. He will save tougher questions for Day 2 (if he even asks a non creampuff). But after Day 1, Palin will be unavailable, and she'll get away scott free.

he better ask her why she isn't wearing her flag pin. secessionists without flag pins make me nervous. come to think of it, they better both be wearing flag pins. what a crock of shit!

Here's a question for Charlie Gibson to ask Sarah Palin:
Catholics are a target demographic for both candidates. You are an ex-Catholic. Can you explain to Catholic voters why you would leave the Catholic church for your current post-denominational Christian church?
Aside from the obvious issue of abortion, is there anything in your worldview that Catholics interested in social justice for the poor and disenfranchised can relate to?

Governor Palin, regarding all that "per diem" money you received from the State of Alaska for just staying at home, did you report it as income on your tax returns? And by the way, how soon will we be seeing your financial statements?

How about asking her about her husband's influence and access to official communications. If she were vice president, would Todd have a security clearance and be copied on top secret communications the way he's copied on the governor's official e-mails now? Convince us that she/he are not a huge security risk.

Gibson should ask about her and the hubby's involvement with the Alaska Independence Party and how that negatively impacts McCain's claims of "Country First" and patriotism.
However, I expect that since they selected Gibson, we'll get softball questions and plenty of opportunity for repetition of Republican talking points.

My question:
Apparently you don't believe in teaching your children about birth control and protection from STDs, given that they will be abstinent. What if your daughter Bristol, instead of becoming pregnant and giving rise to precious life, had become infected with HIV?

There was something in Cafe yesterday about this. #
I actually thought that instead of snark, it would be interesting to bombard ABC with the questions we the people would LIKE to really have answered. Maybe we can generate a list here in comments of questions that actually stood a chance of being asked but also highlighted the problems.
Examples:
Gov. Palin, the McCain campaign and you yourself have repeated the assertion that you opposed the Bridge to Nowhere. However, while you were campaigning for Gov., you appear in several instances to have been supporting the Bridge, saying once "this isn't Nowhere to me!" How do you reconcile those two statements?
Gov Palin, the McCain campaign calls you a fiscal conservative. However, in your term as mayor, you drive the debt of Wasilla from zero to $19m, or $3000 per resident. All this while securing $24m in additional earmarks for Wasilla, a town of 7000 people. How do you reconcile these facts?
Gov Palin, this is about your church and Pastor. Your Pastor has said, while you were in the pews, that God will strike down America. He's also advocated for the Jews for Jesus movement. You have spoken at his church calling for the congregation to pray that a pipeline will be built, and calling the mission in Iraq a divine mission. How do you feel that you can have these religious views about religion and government, and still be fair to people who believe differently that you from other religions, or who don't believe at all?
Gov Palin, the McCain campaign has responded to complaints about your lack of foreign policy experience by discussing Alaska's proximity to Russia. Have you ever had any dealings with the Russian government?
Gov. Palin, The McCain campaign has responded to compliants about lack of experience by claiming you were commander in chief of the Alaska Nat'l Guard. Have you ever commanded them in any combat capacity? Have you ever commanded them in any other capacity. What is the extent of your involvement in the ANG?
Gov. Palin, your husband was a member of the AIP and you've attended their conventions and recorded talks for thier latest convention. Can you tell us what the AIP stands for, what it calls for and what it does?
Any others? If we get a good list, lets just keep sending them to ABC and hope they get asked.

reagarding the AIP, it's enough if she agrees with their idea for a referendum regarding statehood. that alone is sedition.

I don't think that's a Yankee accent. It sounds more midwestern to me, frankly. (I live in Chicago.) It sounds like southern Wisconsin, or small town Illinois.

The reason I put "yankee" in quotes is because, in Texas, any US accent that isn't Texan or Southern is considered a "yankee" accent.

Residents of Wisconsin and Illinois are considered "yankees" in Texas.

Mrs. Doubtfire?
Kidding, not a good match but she's definitely steeped in doubt, ours that is. Now we get to see how wrong we've been about the gullibility of the low-information voter? I wish.
Oh, and pit bulls are getting an undeserved hit, they're as sweet and friendly as any dog until trained otherwise, but don't EVER try to put lipstick on one!
No mean mama, Obama!
