McCain's National Co-Chair: Media Coverage Of Palin Is "Completely Fair," Not Sexist
Meg Whitman, McCain's national campaign co-chair and former CEO of e-Bay, veered off message today in an interview with Fox News, describing the media vetting of Palin as "completely fair" and saying that there hasn't really been any sexism to speak of in the coverage.
Take a look:
"I actually think it's completely fair for the media to vet Sarah Palin," Whitman said, adding that it was "the right thing to do" for the media to dig into the background of someone who is "running for the highest office in the land."
Asked directly whether there had been any media sexism, she replied: "I wouldn't say there really has."
Someone should tell this to McCain senior adviser Steve Schmidt, who actually complained today that the press was "on a mission to destroy" Palin.

Ok - don't anyone dare accuse her of whining. What's that? O, she accused Hillary Clinton of whining?
You know what - it's not ok if you are a Republican. Not anymore.

McCain, as Kerry said on Sunday morning, has become "a prisoner" of the far right base, not a maverick.
My guess is that if McCain can't close the gap in the polls with a convention bounce, the moderates in the party like Meg (let's talk profits not God) will start abandoning this insanity of Johnny and Sarah.
And speaking of moderate Repubs, where is hell is Lincoln Chafee --pro-choice, for gay equality, proponent of the environment, opposes the death penalty, voted against the Iraq authorization, etc etc (why is this guy a Republican, again?). I can't imagine what he's thinking about Mrs. Palin. Obama needs him to jump parties and cut a commercial.

I just hope all Schmidt's whining will not work and the media backs off. Palin wasn't vetted by the campaign, she lied in her very first appearance, and she's dangerously inexperienced to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. The media has the right to ask questions - however this is why I was completely against the whole "Who's the Mommy" angle, there was so much other areas to investigate that it is nothing more than a rallying cry and a distraction.

By the way, in case any "journalist" happens to read this. Can you people do me a favor the next time one of the republicans claim that these two bozos are the new teddy roosevelt. Here's a start on some of his policies:
Roosevelt promised to continue McKinley's program, and at first he worked closely with McKinley's men. His 20,000-word address to the Congress in December 1901 asked Congress to curb the power of trusts "within reasonable limits." They did not act but Roosevelt did, issuing 44 lawsuits against major corporations; he was called the "trust-buster".
Roosevelt firmly believed: "The Government must in increasing degree supervise and regulate the workings of the railways engaged in interstate commerce." Inaction was a danger, he argued: "Such increased supervision is the only alternative to an increase of the present evils on the one hand or a still more radical policy on the other."[47]
His biggest success was passage of the Hepburn Act of 1906, the provisions of which were to be regulated by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC). The most important provision of the Act gave the ICC the power to replace existing rates with "just-and-reasonable" maximum rates, with the ICC to define what was just and reasonable. Anti-rebate provisions were toughened, free passes were outlawed, and the penalties for violation were increased. Finally, the ICC gained the power to prescribe a uniform system of accounting, require standardized reports, and inspect railroad accounts. The Act made ICC orders binding; that is, the railroads had to either obey or contest the ICC orders in federal court. To speed the process, appeals from the district courts would go directly to the U.S. Supreme Court.
In response to public clamor (and due to the uproar cause by Upton Sinclair's book The Jungle), Roosevelt pushed Congress to pass the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, as well as the Meat Inspection Act of 1906. These laws provided for labeling of foods and drugs, inspection of livestock and mandated sanitary conditions at meatpacking plants. Congress replaced Roosevelt's proposals with a version supported by the major meatpackers who worried about the overseas markets, and did not want small unsanitary plants undercutting their domestic market.[48]
Now, have an intern do some research as well. Ask one of these bozo's if they will follow teddy's lead and bust up some trusts, like maybe exxon/mobil. Which corporations do they plan on filing lawsuits against ala teddy roosevelt. Or how about what regulatory agencies they want to beef up and expand to protect the american people? I think that you get the idea. Please do your jobs!!!! These right-wing hacks are not a reincarnation of teddy roosevelt and it is patently false and unbelievably disgusting to claim so. I would love to see newt the nazi's face if you asked him some questions related to roosevelt's policies. Hilarious

Hi wallace, there you are.
A little help here, I am confused about a few things and want to come over to your side. Can you explain some things for me.
1. What has mcbush done to warrant the maverick label? I just don't see it.
2. What facts warrant either palin or mcbush to be labeled a reformer? What have they done in the past to warrant that label as well?
Thanks in advance.
PS: By the way, you can lay off repeating the nonsense about the charge of being a closet secessionist. That really isn't the point or argument. Also, there are only a handful of people on the fake pregnancy bs, which I think has clearly been refuted anyway. Now back to your candidates, convince us. Thanks.

People shouldn't be giving Whitman a pass either. While her activities are more successful and thus less "newsworthy" than Fiorina's flameout, she's a nasty operator. She's capped a long career of questionable ethics by turning eBay into a cash machine by... making it the official practice to stonewall any complaints or investigation into their tacit role as the world's largest fencer and wire fraud enabler. She was the one who made it an objective to acquire PayPal and keep its non-bank designation (and thus non-coverage by banking regulations) for as long as possible, by buying any of her government friends who could be bought.
Which is of course, all of them.
She's not a "strong woman", she's just another do-as-I-say on-the-take GOP corporatist douchebag.

This is turning into a "Cohen Brothers" movie with all the guns, plaid shirts, Alaska opting out of the U.S., unwed pregnant daughter, redneck boyfriend being trotted out at the Convention, ethics scandal, et al. Screenplay anyone?

The Siberian Candidate - she schemes with insider moles in the McCain campaign to nominate her for VP, convincing him that picking her and invigorating the evangelicals is the only way to win. Then after they win, agents of the AIP assassinate McCain and she becomes president. Send it to Joel & Ethan!

Unsurprised
"No Surprises From Palin, McCain Team Says"-Washington Post
Senior McCain officials described themselves as "unsurprised" today as huge storms of locusts flew from Wasilla, Alaska and descended upon McCain campaign headquarters. "Locusts were vetted. Locusts were vetted in the vet" said one campaign official, who spoke without attribution out of concern that he would be devoured by a verminous flying cloud. The campaign also described as "expected" reports that the rivers were running black with ashes, that family pets were begin to speak in human voices, declaiming "Release Sarah!", and that a huge spreading stain was beginning to blot out the Northern sun. "Vetted" said the campaign.
"There are exciting new studies that show that locusts can be used as a source of biodegradable fuel" said Newt Gingrich, as he hunkered down to avoid the black marble obelisks falling from the sky around him. "Palin, if she can be said to have played a role in bringing about these new biofuel resources, should be praised for her innovative role in the solution to our future energy demands".
"These events firmly demonstrate Palin's deep connection to traditional modes of traditional expression, in traditional forms, traditionally." said William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard. "Experience, in the face of these more traditional events, is overrated..." continued Kristol, before ending the interview to wrap himself head-to-toe in mosquito netting and swallowing a bitter tasting anti-malarial drug, the taste of which, as his lips contorted, he noted to be "surprisingly refreshing."
Palin's schedule in the upcoming days of the Republican National Convention has been cut short due to, as one McCain communications aide reported, a desire not to "let the magic out of the bottle too quickly." "Sarah is a precious resource, who each moment brings a new vitality and energy to every worker on the campaign" said the aide, while fighting to remove the nest of serpents which had suddenly materialized on the floor beneath him, and were now slowly ascending his legs. "Do these bite, or just slink?" asked the aide, who spoke on conditions of anonymity so as not to provoke or otherwise alienate the reptiles.
Meanwhile, as the heavens darkened, the seas began to boil, and a voice tore through the clouds shouting, in deep, stentorian tones to one and all: "It was a Mistake!", campaign offices described themselves as "unperturbed". "Serpents materializing, house pets suddenly called to vocal advocacy, Celestial callings to revise and repent...Vetted" said the spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was turning into a pillar of salt. "Everything that was vetted was vetted in the vet."

OK RobertH, you can STOP pasting that entire article into every single thread now!! We've all seen it.
It's astonishing, and comical, how brazen the McCain camp is being in its whiny-ass titty-baby-ness.
They're a Campaign of Whiners.

Perhaps Whitman wants this wretch gone like the rest of us...
In Denver, MSNBC had their anchor and panel desks outside, and defended the crowd noise as Power of the People for the most part.
Then this guy shows up Wednesday and Thursday with a loudspeaker screaming "9/11 is an inside job!" They shooed him away by prime time, but they put up with it for most of the day both days.
Well, he's back today, with better org, complete with large chorus and banners.
The denial of the commentators against this backdrop, coupled with a zero-issue convention thus far that has come down to the fitness for office of an opportunistic zealot, is utterly facinating.

This shows that Meg Whitman actually has a career to look forward to, unlike Carly. If you are a aspiring to be CEO of a major corporation, the way you conduct yourself in the public eye is critical. For these advisers, their own executive judgment is also being assessed by potential employers as they publicly go about their duties for McCain.
I don't think they'll be blamed if he's not successful, but the footage of their assertions is going to haunt these people for the rest of their careers. Seriously, what board of directors is going to hire someone to lead their company who makes public assertions that this vetting process process was not flawed or that the candidate selected by the process is supremely qualified? Would you want to import that process into your company?
When Carly Firoina came out with some insane statements the other day, I really wondered how she'd ever get another job. It seems Meg Whitman decided she isn't going down with the GOP ship. Good on her.

After the hp fiasco, she is unemployable in the private sector anyway. That's why she is a talking hack for mcbush. She's going the republican government route. Get mcbush in and he will hire incompetents like fiorina to administration positions.

I have to disagree with the Cohen Brothers analogy, although it is close.
This is definitely a brand new episode of the Jerry Springer Show! Pretty soon we'll be bringing on a procession of all those people fired by Palin as mayor and governor for having the temerity to oppose her...oh...wait...
Serious question, though. While the Republican faithful are all gathered in Minnesota, it's like a giant echo chamber. They just talk among themselves, feed each other the same talking points and generally toe the line. My question, though, is what happens whent hey get home and find out everyone else is laughing at them?

MSNBC (a link MSN.com) has a poll asking "Should the media stop asking questions about Sarah Palin's background and family?" So far, about 38,000 votes. 62.1% say "no", 37.9% say "yes". Some voting "yes" just because of the refence to "family" in the question.

Mccain wants badly to define Palin via the victm card. The target of course is the media. Everytime a republican gets desperate (92' and 96') out comes their favorite punching bag. It is all a huge distraction to the real issue here: if we want to know what a Mccain admin would look like here it is. Utter chaos. This has gone beyond a question of judgment to do we want utter anarchy in the whitehouse or calm. Do we want a fly of the handle gut decision maker or a rational perceptive leader that is careful with our precious resources. Do we want a man buried in the past or someone that knows the only way ahead is to look there. Do we want a military torn to pieces in endless conflict or a strong vital military kept as a last resort. Judgment is just a part of the harrowing mosiac of Mccain.

I was reading an article about Palin on the BBC News website. In the comments section, someone wrote in with a suggestion regarding a good billboard. I don't know if the person was from the U.K. or the US, but I'm stealing the idea.
You have a billboard divided into 3 sections. The first section, on the left, is a picture from the Exon Valdez fiasco - oil soaked birds, black goo on the beaches, etc. In the middle, a picture from Iraq showing death and destruction. On the right side, a black and white picture from one of the old 50s tv shows, like Leave it to Beaver. Underneath: McCain/Palin

That is good. I'm not sure the black and white 50s TV show would translate for everyone - but it's a good billboard -

That's my Gov! She's terrific! And hopefully the next Attorney General in the Obama administration. She's perfect to take these folks on with her record of accomplishment as state AG, and then Gov for the last 6 years.

I heard an NPR piece with Meg Whitman just after I read this news today: it reminded me that she wants to run for governor in California this next round. Thus, she cannot afford to look like a raging lunatic. Claims to be a moderate on social issues, conservative on fiscal issues, etc.

I didn't read all the comments, but didn't see anyone point out that, unless I'm mistaken, Meg Whitman is one of the 3 "wisest people McCain knows", right?
From the Saddleback interview?

You've got to remember that Meg was Romney's #1 supporter until he pulled out. I think she's hoping that Palin withdraws and Mitt rides to the rescue.

Portman has now joined Meg Whitman in stating that the media coverage of Palin is NOT sex-biased, and he actually praised Obama's "Back off" statement.

Remember when Dan Quayle and the right wingers were so upset when Murphy Brown, a fictional character at that, decided to have her baby out of wedlock? They said she was glamorizing single motherhood.
It seems to me the republicans are now, in their own twisted logic, glamorizing teenage mothers.
What a strange trip it is.

i honestly thought if mcmuffin picked condi rice or ms. hewlett packard, he would have skated to the presidency.
i am so glad he picked maggie o'connell. now the independents & moderates (and hillary discontents) will be totally turned off, and there's no way mcmuffin can dump maggie o'connell w/o pissing off the base.
