McCain Says Now Is Not Time To Assign Blame -- Only Two Hours After His Campaign Blamed Obama
John McCain just now delivered a statement to the press about the bailout collapse, and called for the finger-pointing to stop -- barely two hours after his campaign directly blamed Obama in unequivocal terms.
"Now is not the time to fix the blame." McCain said. "It's time to fix the problem."
But at around 3:30 P.M., the McCain campaign blasted out a statement that fixed the blame directly on Obama.
"Barack Obama failed to lead, phoned it in, attacked John McCain, and refused to even say if he supported the final bill," the statement said. "This bill failed because Barack Obama and the Democrats put politics ahead of country."
Of course, it's already been established repeatedly that McCain isn't responsible for what his own campaign does, so nothing to see here.
In all seriousness, this seems to show either that the McCain campaign realizes how badly it erred in launching such an attack on Obama in the midst of today's crisis news, or that the meltdown's political strains have knocked the McCain team so badly off its game that we're way beyond erratic now and are rushing headlong into unhinged.
Late Update: John Aravosis makes the good point that McCain came very close to contradicting himself within the space of two sentences.

I think you misread this. McCain is urging everyone not to assign blame to him.
It's appropriate to assign blame for the economy, the collapse of the dollar, the failure to cure AIDS, the Mets not making the postseason, AGAIN, and global warming. All of this is obviously Obama's fault.
It's not, however, appropriate at this grave time to assign blame for the cratering of the stock market, the constipation in the credit markets, and the collapse of the Asian markets sure to come. Particularly not on the person who was, a mere 8 hours ago, taking credit for his role in averting those crises we can't talk about now.

60 percent of the Dems voted for it, versus 33 percent of the Repubs, so that means the Dems sabotaged it? Please, somebody tell me, what alternate universe does this wingnut live in? Who in god's name does he think is going to take him seriously after this stunt?
September 29, 2008 5:43 PM | Reply | Permalink
That could be construed as the Dems sinking the bill because the bill was crafted with majority Dem input and control, therefore they should have been able to hold another dozen or so of their members in line to support it to pass it. BTW, I pretty much blame the Repubs, but I wanted to lay out how easy it is to rationalize blaming the Dems.

Prediction:
The McCain/Palin Campaign will try [unsuccessfully] to cancel the vice presidential debates over the breakdown today in Washington. Of course the first thing your going to say is "that will never fly! Palin is the the Gov. of Alaska and no one is going to be fooling into thinking she has something to do with these negotiations." Hear me out--
--McCain and House Republicans will call upon Palin to come to Washington to observe the legislative process at this critical juncture in history. After negotiations are finally complete, Palin will emerge from The Capital Building only to totally rip off one of Obama's lines from the primary, "I haven't spent much time in Washington, but I have spent enough time to learn that the ways of Washington must change"
House Republicans will play the backup singers, proclaiming that is was Sarah Palin's folksy, small town, Alaskan ways that finally brought them to see the light.
This will then be parlayed into foreign policy cred which she currently has none of by redirecting a now universally recognizable meme that Democrats have already embraced. If Palin's folksy, small town style can work on House Republicans, then it can work on Vladamir Putin.
But that's only if there isn't a new compromise before Thursday.

This is pretty typical Bush tactics, though a bit unusual in being conducted at McCain campaign whiplash speed. But I've lost track of the number of times Bush or Congressional Republicans would lash out viciously for as long as it was working, and then turn around and declare "no one should be playing the blame game with this" or "let's stop the partisan bickering" to try to disarm a counter-attack.
September 29, 2008 5:49 PM | Reply | Permalink
Straying close to unhinged? Maybe I'm simply to partisan to have any kind of clear-eyed view, but it seems to me that, ever since their Palin nomination stunt started tanking in the polls, the campaign has become genuinely unhinged, full of nothing but desperate moves, outright lies, and (frankly) damaging nonsense.
The scariest thing? That McCain & Co. are so clearly unhinged, but Obama isn't crushing him in the polls. Is it racism? Fright? I dunno; I just hope Obama's (incredibly consistent) strategy of staying above the fray--thus allowing the McCain campaign plenty of space to commit unforced errors--ends up winning the day.

But also, when John "Drambo" McCain fucks up and prevents the bill from passing, then it actually retroactively becomes a bad bill that makes the Democrats look bad for trying to pass it in the first place?

how dare you liberals.
for five and a half years, john mccain didn't have a bailout package to fuck up.

Sorry, but mccain has fucked up the economy for 26 years with his deregulation, let the markets work BS and his utter cluelessness of what was really going on... Does he now want a bail out for his friends in the gambling industry as well?
Anyway, with the House adjourned for Rosh Hashanah tomorrow, the bloviators will be spinning the lead-up to the vp debate all day and all night. Palin should have the sound off, like she did when she watched the first SNL skit. They are not being nice to her.

McCain should really take off the flower that squirts water. It's a dead giveaway.

I so want to see Obama eviscerate McCain for his lies. In little tiny sound bites, on prime time. I wish he'd stop holding back quite so much.

What a dope! It's so embarrassing. I think this is a case – sort of like Clinton or even former Virginia Senator Macaca – where McCain is not in tune with the YouTube generation of media. He's going on saying the most ridiculous things, lying, making bizarre accusations, laying undeserved blame and then goes off pontificating and lying some more to try to cover up his crumbling previous statements.
The McCain house of cards is tumbling down. Good riddance.

The Reagan Question: Are You Better Off Now Than You Were Eight Years Ago?
We have about 20,000 real measures that we can use to show how bad the economy has performed under President
Bush.
