McCain Raises $47 Million In August
The McCain campaign announces that he's raised a whopping $47 million in August -- the first time that he's racked up Obama-like fundraising totals.
The secret to McCain's success? Sarah Palin, who apparently generated some $10 million in donations since the announcement that she'd been picked, suggesting that social conservatives are now reassured by her candidacy.
McCain's huge haul -- roughly double his pull in past months -- also strongly suggests that GOP donors have grown much more bullish on his chances in the past few weeks, probably because of the stepped-up aggressiveness of McCain's attacks on Obama and the persistent tightness of the race in polls.

Can McCain still opt-out of public money?

After all the sadness that was brought to GOPers after Obama opted out. I think they would be upset, that they would leave the republican party if mccain opts out.

Also any primary money he has left on hand come Thursday he simply has to donate to the RNC right? Meaning they can just use it in attack ads for him.

Alaska's Polar Bear Community Speaks Out.
Upon being asked for a reaction to the news that Sarah Palin is soon to become a grandmother, a spokesperson for the Alaskan Polar Bear community said:
This is the last straw. We are all doomed. The Palin family birthrate is going to have them spreading into our last remaining living space. We are working on an emergency evacuation plan to escape the ravages of Hurricane Sarah.
At their current fertility rate, we project that within a decade, The Palin family vote will be a majority of all Alaskan voters, and we realize that Sarah Palin will then take over the entire state, and declare the Independent nation of Oilaska.
There is no way that Empress Sarah will allow we Polar Bears to survive her reign. She is a ravenous carnivore that no Carribou, Moose or Polar Bear is safe from. All she talks about is turning us into stews and sausages.
We swear, that woman would make a stew out of the hind legs of the Lamb of God.

Off topic: Just got a text message from the Obama campaign asking supporters to donate $5 to the Red Cross by texting the word GIVE to 24357. Alternatively, you can give more by calling (would that be voicing?) 800-435-7669.

Yes, the "tightening national polls".
How about the one just released by CBS News showing Obama/Biden with an 8 point lead.
And this is before Juno-gate.
Things that make you wtf

Isn't this a little quick to be releasing fundraising numbers? August ended yesterday, after all.
Methinks they're trying to distract from another story...

Hmmmmm. What other story would that be?
Does anybody know the answer to Jonze's question above? Does this money just go into RNC coffers by Thursday?

They're releasing the numbers now... before they're hit with a Tsunami of citizens who want their money back!

Exactly! Especially when they find out the money they donated is going to the wedding gift registry for Bristol Palin.

That money doesn't do them any good after this week. They opted into public finance.

And before "Palin as director of Ted Stevens 527-gate", and before "Palin going to be deposed under oath regarding Trooper-gate", and before "Bridge to Nowhere-gate, and "roads to nowhere-gate" and before people realize that Palin wants to force women to keep their babies even in cases of rape and incest, and want creationism taught in schools, and before learning that as Mayor of Wasilla she hired a federal lobbyist to funnel more earmark "pork" to her city, and before she left Wasilla, a town of >7000 people a debt of $20M, and how as Mayor she fired to long time city employees because they backed her political rival suring the campaign.
But hey, her 17 yr old daughter is pregnant, in case you didn't hear.

You know I"m getting offended now. This is not irrelevant - her hypocrisy is. If she wasn't who she is and didn't advocate what she advocates, this would be trash.
But it's not and I"m really tired of being told otherwise.
It's getting way chauvinistic, frankly.

It is more than her daughter getting pregnant. It is the kind of person/parent Sarah is. Here is an interesting blog post I found. Don't know if it is true or not, but it sounds authentic.

I know I'm wrong for saying this...but the MSM is only going to focus on Gustav today so the impact of today's Palin developments (baby-gate, head of steven's pac, Dukasis like moment(no abortion even if own daugther was raped) probably will be minimal.

I recall Kerry had TONS of primary money left over that just had to sit there.

It's not that he can't spend the money after Thursday. It's that he can't raise any more directly for his campaign. If people want to donate money to the Republican presidential campaign, they'll have to give to the RNC.
