McCain Has Said "Lipstick On A Pig" At Least Three Times
As you know, the McCain campaign is pretending to be outraged by Barack Obama's use of the common phrase "lipstick on a pig," with McCain surrogates pretending that they believe that Obama was tacitly referring to Sarah Palin as a porker.
The McCain campaign even has a new Web ad (see video below) hitting Obama over the "pig" line.
As it turns out, however, McCain himself has used the same phrase not once, not twice, but at least three times.
The first one is the one that's gotten all the attention: McCain using the phrase last October to describe Hillary's health plan. But there are two more examples.
At a press conference on Iraq war strategy on February 1, 2007, McCain said (via Nexis):
"It gets down to whether you support what's being done in this new strategy or you don't. You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig in my view."
And according to National Public Radio, McCain said the phrase again that same day in a similar context (via Nexis):
"It's all about withdrawal or not withdrawal, okay? I mean that's what it's all about. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."
Meanwhile, here's vid of McCain's web ad:
Meanwhile, Fox News is reporting that Obama is expected to address the lipstick "controversy" soon. I don't know if this is true, but if so, here's hoping that there's not a shred of defensiveness or apology in his remarks.
Here's hoping that Obama strips the lipstick off this pig mercilessly.

Hopefully Obama can make some bacon out of this.

That's also absurd. But I don't believe Paterson speaks for the Obama campaign in any shape or form, so I don't really see how that's relevant to the McCain camp's fake outrage.

Luckily the Obama campaign isn't pushing this bullshit from Paterson.

I know Patterson's remarks aren't politically effective, and actually would hurt, I think he's essentially right.
The 95% white GOP convention was full of talk of "small town values". Folks, does anyone not get the implication?? Care to venture a guess at what they think of urban values, and how small town and urban compare demographically?
It's like Ronald Reagan's "morning in America" ad -- "Morning" apparently means America consists entirely of white people.

There is a difference between whether or not McCain (or anyone else---even Barack Obama himself) has said this "common phrase" before and whether or not they have said it AS THEY ARE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.
It is especially a bigger difference to say something just days after someone who "just happens to be running for Vice President" refers to herself as a "pit bull with lipstick"
To be sure, there is NOTHING sexist or untrue about what Obama said. But let's be honest here---it's something he really, really probably should not have said.
"Perception is reality" anyone?

Horsehockey. Obama cannot let the McCain campaign censor everything he says.
Princess Sarah was critical of Hillary Clinton for "whining" about sexism. Now she and her campaign buddy are looking for excuses to complain of sexism. She should be called on it. It's clear that Obama was not referring to Princess Sarah in what he said, but if she's that thin-skinned, she's not ready for national office and should just pack up and go back home to Wasilla.

I have a lot of friends, educated and informed, who think Palin is fine because she's "hot." They don't follow every news cycle, they check in only occasionally to get the gist.
If they check in tonight, they'll only think "Huh, Obama called Palin a pig? What a loser." So Obama NEEDS to reply and make sure that is not what they take away.
And I trust him to do it in a way that reverses the momentum.

The problem here is that the McCain campaign can infer that Obama "meant" Palin with his line, if they so choose. They can even imply that he "must have meant" Palin when talking about it, although they are on shaky ground to do so. But when they flat out state that Obama was talking about Palin, as they do in that ad, then they are LYING! Quite possibly, they are libeling Obama as well. Obama did not say "Palin is like putting lipstick on a pig." He did not, in any way, address the comments to her. In the context of his remarks, he was speaking about the McCain campaign's recent adoption of the "change" mantra, and the obvious absurdity of their claims to be change agents.
I think this whole incident proves Obama's point, by the way. But yeah, this is getting reeeediculous. McCain and Palin can certainly feel free to have their poor fragile feelings hurt by big, bad Obama. What they can't do is pretend that he said something he didn't.

The advertisement labels the comment as "Obama on Palin" which is a disgusting and deliberate lie. Tat the media are so easily manipulated bby this is truly sad.
Obama's comment was explicitly describing McCain's attempt to pretend he is something that he is not.
That was not implied, it was not subtle, it was extrmely clear. I defy you to repeat any of the previous several sentences he spoke just prior to this an give it any other interpretation.
At what point do the media realize that they are the ones being played, over and over.
Lalo, you passive aggressiveness is reaching new heights. You didn't get your way so you want to punish the rest of us with your smarmy told-you-so's. It's not attractive.

Are you so stupid as missing the point so clear and so apparent? No one said that Obama is the first person who says "put lipstick on a pig". For a man lacks any originality, this is too much to ask. It is about the context for the use of this idiom. Palin told the whole world that she was a moose with lipstick. No Obama said a pig with lipstick is still a pig. Is it not clear he may be mistaken for saying Palin is a pig? For a Harvard educated lawyer, is it not in his interest to use something better to avoid confusion?

My hope for Obama presser:
My friends, I have no intention of apologizing for my use of a very common phrase, one that is so common in fact, that John McCain has used it himself on mulitple occasions in exactly the same way I did. I do not apologize for conjured up "outrage" that a rival campaign sleazily manufactures to score cheap political points. That is exactly the kind of traditional Washington gutter politics that I am running to change. For John McCain to sink to such a dishonorable level in running his own campaign merely confirms that, when it comes to John McCain and "change" in Washington: you can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

This is politics people! It's not about "truth", it's about creating perception.
Remember all the outrage when the Bush aide remarked about how we, "create our own reality". Well, here it is. That's what politics is all about.
Right now McCain is playing Obama like a fiddle. He's off message, defensive, and now having to likely apologize for a remark simply because the word "lipstick" is trademarked and was used without permission, by Governor Palin.
What Obama needs to do is not apologize, sound defensive, but go on offense. You can't respond tit for tat.
Look for example about the question of education. Obama broadsided McCain about the issue of education.
How did McCain respond? Did he argue his case? Of course not. He broadsided Obama right back on the scurrilous claim that Obama wants to teach Kindergartners how to hide the salami, then tying it up with big bow and asking the American people if they want this pervert leading the country.
See how it works yet?
If Obama doesn't learn how to fight in this political climate, then we are in for another four years of George W. Bush.

It's not that. My point is that if he can't effectively respond to this nonsense, he won't win. I'm not about to throw good money after bad. McCain means a major recession (among other things), I'll be needing the money.

I agree.
Here's my suggestion for a "response" to the McCain Sleaze Ad--create an ad where the assertion is made that McCain favors an environment that allows pedophiles free reign with our children. By decrying attempts to teach kids certain warning signs, McCain is pro-pedophile.
Enough said.

I should try this.
Next year I will be a 5 handicap in Golf! Because I kick ass. And I just bought a new putter that claims to never miss. I bought it on TV - it must work!
This year I will get a 400% raise. Its obvious that my boss will see that as a good idea. Because, well shit, I believe it in my heart - it must be true!
Obama is a sexist Pig and will lose by 1 million percent. America has already rejected him. Hannity told me so.

We shouldn't be wasting time arguing on *their* terms, we should be debating *our* issues.
I'd like to see more attacks, not personal, but hard attacks on McCain and Palin's policies; here are 4 that would win the election for Obama/Biden in 2 weeks of advertising:
1 -- McCain wants to destroy the only part of our current health care system that works at all -- group health insurance, by adding a new tax on employer provided group health insurance. This is a no-brainer win.
2 -- McCain wants to bankrupt Social Security by diverting money required to pay current and future beneficiaries to privatized accounts. Attack him for this in Florida, and you've won the election. An ad based on this should be running 24x7 in FL.
3 -- Palin wants to make the morning after pill illegal to use, even if your daughter was raped. Does that sound like a small government conservative to you? Or a "Big Mother Party" conservative?
4 -- Palin wants to spend your tax dollars teaching creationism to public school students. How well do you think your children will compete with Chinese and Indian students who learn real science in school?

Obama just hit back. Rough transcript:
"They are playing the same game that have made people sick of politics. They know it's catnip for the news...
This is the same old political game... It would be funny but it's phony and foolish diversions rather than about the future. Every four years, this is what we do. We have an energy crisis, and education system that is not working, we have an economy that is creating hardships, we have two wars going on and veterans not being cared for...and this is what they want to talk about. You know who ends up losing at the end of the day --- you do!
Enough! I don't care what they say about me but this election is too important. No more swift boat politics! Enough is enough. These are serious times, and they call for serious debate...
Spare me the phony outrage!"
---
There you go.

Here's a little e-mail I recieved from a dedicated Democrat here in Texas. Let it light a fire under our behinds:
"Friends,
Are you sick as I am of those bastards stealing the image of Maverick for their campaign? ... do they not know that the real Maverick family was Texas liberal royalty? They were powerful supporters of the New Deal, fought for the underdog, civil rights and so on.
His obituary stated:
"Mr. Maury Maverick, .... ''the last angry man in America,'' contested Jim Crow laws, supported labor unions and derailed an effort by the Texas Legislature to extend the death penalty to Communist Party members. He defended draft resisters, represented atheists and won a Supreme Court case against the F.B.I.'s seizure of publications from a Texas bookstore on charges that they were seditious."
The popular term comes from his rancher-grandfather, Samuel Maverick, an early Texas settler.
This family is the very antithesis of the McCain-Palin pretenders who would defile this fine name for personal gain.
First, Bush expropriated Texas to win the Whitehouse and now McCain returns to try the same thing.
Remember what they did to the word "Swiftboat" in 2004... are we going to just sit here and let it happen?
I say No!"

I think it's great - I don't think the original remark was meant to refer to Palin, but I think the image of her as a VP being akin to putting lipstick on a pig will now have general currency and will be reinforced every time another story comes out revealing how her past actions belie her current statements.

If McCain really loved this country he wouldn't have been in lock-step with Bush 90% of the time and as a result help assist in damaging the American people's spirits.
McCain needs to man up and talk about the issues [oh, that's right-- his RECORD sucks on the ISSUES & his campaign adviser did say this election wasn't going to be about the issues that the American people care about] and stop standing behind that political woman pick you say is ready the be president if something should happen to you.

The Couric footage was from the Clinton / Obama primary and not related to Palin, either!
How about showing footage of Dick Morris & Palin saying that women always whine about sexism??

Lest, we forget, there would have been no need for a Surge if Bush & Co. had not taken the U.S. into a Phony & Pretend War on Terrorism while the Real War on Terrorism in Afghanistan where Bin Ladin lived, was ignored! And if we do not Wise up this might happen in the future!

In a cleverly pre-emptive strike, McCain is falsely accusing Obama of wanting to teach children sex education because they knew Newsweek will be soon coming out with an article on Sarah Palin! "Judge Warned Palin About Emotional Child Abuse

The media treats everything the republicans say as newsworthy. "mccain is upset about lipstick comment. mccain thinks obama is a celebrity. mccain thinks the media is sexist." what does mccain think about the economy, choice, iraq, …
obama needs to go back to hope and change and let the republicans lie, lie, lie!

If you watch the tape, there is a moment right after he delivers the line when he is almost physically 'off balance' Watching it, I would imagine him thinking
"Huh? Why are they yelling so loud .... oh ... oh, no.... crap! I bet they think I'm referring to Palin because of what she said about lipstick .. which is ridiculous ... but that means the other side is going to think it or say they do .. okay, quick, what's another similar analogy so maybe I can make it clear, right now, what I meant .. got it, fish in newspaper"
Watch the tape - it is a longish pause which local talk radio is interpreting as "milking the moment and letting the applause build" But look at his face. He was taken by surprise (he hadn't thought it was an applause line) and thinking furiously.
I dare say he's now removing from his vocabulary all things like 'lipstick' 'make-up' 'skirt' 'high heels' etc. etc.

So now the Republican Party owns the word "Lipstick"? Does that mean no one else can use "Lipstick" without their permission? Better let Max Factor and the other cosmetic companies know before they get into copy right trouble.
I know the Republican Party is big into respecting ownership rights as example all the music they played without permission during the convention and the fact that Heart has warned them twice about using their music.
But I think letting them have a copy right on the English launage is going a bit to far.

Context. Does anyone here understand what the word context means? Listen to the crowd in the video after Obama says the word lipstick. The crowd gets it. Obama got it. Look at the self-satisfied smirk on his face. And 98% of the cool-aid drinkers here don't get it. Or maybe they do and are so ashamed of their candidate for stooping this low that they won't admit it.

The problem with this is that Obama says this is just a smoke screen to cover up not talking about the real issues and the MSM agrees as they cover the "Lip Stick Gate" story for the uptenth time. So it's working. Obama should have just played the clip of Palin tell Clinton to quit whinning.

If this is a SERIOUS campaign about SERIOUS issues during SERIOUS times why is a SERIOUS candidate talking about lipstick on a pig? Inexperienced community Organizers from Chicago should stay away from farm humor involving barnyard animals they know nothing about.

"John McCain and his campaign team are reprobates of the highest order. McCain is a sleazy old man with a degenerate mind. How could he approve an Ad of this nature if his mind is not in the gutter. This Ad is repulsive and John McCain, Karl Rove, Rick Davis and their entire team are disgraceful, miserable wretches."--safoaf
This is all very true, but did I mention that John was a POW,and she has children?

Sigh. I guess we're stuck with day-in, day-out coverage of Sarah Palin, her gender, her looks, her "feisty" persona, and the inane hashing of the meaningless muck that comprises the bulk of American political coverage. We should all be beyond nausea at the prospect of groping our way to November with perhaps twenty percent of actual voters grasping the fact that they are picking a President of the United States, while the rest flop around the deck like mackerel -- bug-eyed and oblivious to the chum bucket that awaits.

This truth-squad and ad-based whining is very
reminiscent of the aftermath of the Kerry/Bush
debate where Kerry stated what is widely and
openly known. Namely he mentioned Cheney's gay
daughter, in proper context and in a way relevant
to his over-all comment.
The next day Cheney's wife gave a public statement
where she seemed to be on the verge of tears and
said something to the effect of: "all I know is
this is NOT a good man" (quivering voice here).
The even had her standing out in the open rather
than behind a podium which struck me as making
her look vulnerable.
Then like now, the message very much relies
upon the campaign's hope that their voters are
uniformed and easily manipulated.

Obama's remark "Lipstick on a Pig", gaff or calculated?
Only if you believe Barrack Obama is a gifted orator who knows how to play to an audience would you be offended by a remark that seemingly jabs Sarah Palin? You would also have to know the street use of this term, analogous to putting a paper bag over a woman's head before sexual intercourse
