McCain Has Said "Lipstick On A Pig" At Least Three Times

As you know, the McCain campaign is pretending to be outraged by Barack Obama's use of the common phrase "lipstick on a pig," with McCain surrogates pretending that they believe that Obama was tacitly referring to Sarah Palin as a porker.

The McCain campaign even has a new Web ad (see video below) hitting Obama over the "pig" line.

As it turns out, however, McCain himself has used the same phrase not once, not twice, but at least three times.

The first one is the one that's gotten all the attention: McCain using the phrase last October to describe Hillary's health plan. But there are two more examples.

At a press conference on Iraq war strategy on February 1, 2007, McCain said (via Nexis):

"It gets down to whether you support what's being done in this new strategy or you don't. You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig in my view."

And according to National Public Radio, McCain said the phrase again that same day in a similar context (via Nexis):

"It's all about withdrawal or not withdrawal, okay? I mean that's what it's all about. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."

Meanwhile, here's vid of McCain's web ad:

Meanwhile, Fox News is reporting that Obama is expected to address the lipstick "controversy" soon. I don't know if this is true, but if so, here's hoping that there's not a shred of defensiveness or apology in his remarks.

Here's hoping that Obama strips the lipstick off this pig mercilessly.

Hopefully Obama can make some bacon out of this.

Good lord. I can't believe Obama is going to address this nonsense. For fuck's sake.

user-pic

Is it more or less nonsensical than this?
http://wcbstv.com/politics/paterson.mccain.palin.2.813646.html

That's also absurd. But I don't believe Paterson speaks for the Obama campaign in any shape or form, so I don't really see how that's relevant to the McCain camp's fake outrage.

Luckily the Obama campaign isn't pushing this bullshit from Paterson.

McCain proves yet again that he lacks the judgment and gravitas to be POTUS.

I know Patterson's remarks aren't politically effective, and actually would hurt, I think he's essentially right.

The 95% white GOP convention was full of talk of "small town values". Folks, does anyone not get the implication?? Care to venture a guess at what they think of urban values, and how small town and urban compare demographically?

It's like Ronald Reagan's "morning in America" ad -- "Morning" apparently means America consists entirely of white people.

Light of the sun banishing the dark, so to speak?

Why in the heck is Obama addressing this? Good grief..this campaign is always apologizing, backtracking or cowering to the unhonorable McCain campaign.

Ya'll he is not going to win being a wimp!

I'm withholding judgment until I see what happens.

I don't believe for a second he's going to apologize or walk this back. I think he'll use this as an opportunity to go of the offensive. But, we'll see...

user-pic

he effing better. I'm growing disgusted, as my recent comments can attest. and this is coming from a pretty serious Obama supporter who's had to go toe-to-toe with friends of mine over the issue.

user-pic

There is a difference between whether or not McCain (or anyone else---even Barack Obama himself) has said this "common phrase" before and whether or not they have said it AS THEY ARE RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT.

It is especially a bigger difference to say something just days after someone who "just happens to be running for Vice President" refers to herself as a "pit bull with lipstick"

To be sure, there is NOTHING sexist or untrue about what Obama said. But let's be honest here---it's something he really, really probably should not have said.

"Perception is reality" anyone?

user-pic

...it's something he really, really probably should not have said.

Horsehockey. Obama cannot let the McCain campaign censor everything he says.

Princess Sarah was critical of Hillary Clinton for "whining" about sexism. Now she and her campaign buddy are looking for excuses to complain of sexism. She should be called on it. It's clear that Obama was not referring to Princess Sarah in what he said, but if she's that thin-skinned, she's not ready for national office and should just pack up and go back home to Wasilla.

the problem is that not responding to crap like this is why Bush won in 2004. If you don't respond, it has a tendency to catch on, no matter how dumb.

Sorry hyper but history has proven that the "Don't dignify them with a response" approach our mothers recommended doesn't get you elected anything.

I have a lot of friends, educated and informed, who think Palin is fine because she's "hot." They don't follow every news cycle, they check in only occasionally to get the gist.

If they check in tonight, they'll only think "Huh, Obama called Palin a pig? What a loser." So Obama NEEDS to reply and make sure that is not what they take away.

And I trust him to do it in a way that reverses the momentum.

I'm not clicking on that ad and TPM should pull the link because it just encourages McCain to keep pushing this bullshit story.

Amen. What a load of crap.

On the one hand you have TPM *bemoaning* the press bringing this crap up and then they perpetuate it?

What with the bullshit ads they have here, this place is slowly creeping downhill. And this is coming from someone who started reading this blog back in 2005. Capice?

Fox News is reporting that Obama is expected to address the lipstick "controversy" soon.

DO. NOT. WANT.

user-pic

Obama please don't apologize. Please don't sound defensive. Nowhere did you mention Palin. The McCain campaign is feigning outrage. Don't let them punk you, please. Stand firm!

Hell yeah. It's time to engage. He should want this fight. I want to see some anger over this stupidity.

Something audacious would be great: Call out McCain and challenge him to a debate next week. Put the old man on his heels.

Pufferfish

Remember how Bill Clinton was accused that he said "fairy tale" about Obama and not about Iraq?

Well, there we are now, once again.

user-pic

Big difference. The Obama campaign *never* commented on the "fairy tale" line. Never. Plenty of Obama supporters did. Here is the McCain campaign calling Obama a sexist for using a very common term when he never even mentioned Palin.

Big difference.

except for the similarity.

anybody can have a macaca moment.

mccain may have said it 50 times, but he's not running against a women who used a lipstick line herself only a week ago.

Keep stretching, I'm sure you'll find some parallel that makes your inane point.

user-pic

Sure, Lalo. I guess that means that Obama can't say "until the fat lady sings" anymore either, huh, because republicans will say he's calling Palin a fat lady?

Your concern is stupid because, like it or not, most people are calling McCain's bullshit on this. It's mock outrage and it's not credible. McCain is looking like a fool.

The problem here is that the McCain campaign can infer that Obama "meant" Palin with his line, if they so choose. They can even imply that he "must have meant" Palin when talking about it, although they are on shaky ground to do so. But when they flat out state that Obama was talking about Palin, as they do in that ad, then they are LYING! Quite possibly, they are libeling Obama as well. Obama did not say "Palin is like putting lipstick on a pig." He did not, in any way, address the comments to her. In the context of his remarks, he was speaking about the McCain campaign's recent adoption of the "change" mantra, and the obvious absurdity of their claims to be change agents.

I think this whole incident proves Obama's point, by the way. But yeah, this is getting reeeediculous. McCain and Palin can certainly feel free to have their poor fragile feelings hurt by big, bad Obama. What they can't do is pretend that he said something he didn't.

The advertisement labels the comment as "Obama on Palin" which is a disgusting and deliberate lie. Tat the media are so easily manipulated bby this is truly sad.

Obama's comment was explicitly describing McCain's attempt to pretend he is something that he is not.
That was not implied, it was not subtle, it was extrmely clear. I defy you to repeat any of the previous several sentences he spoke just prior to this an give it any other interpretation.

At what point do the media realize that they are the ones being played, over and over.

Lalo, you passive aggressiveness is reaching new heights. You didn't get your way so you want to punish the rest of us with your smarmy told-you-so's. It's not attractive.

Obama should come out swinging. And attack McCain for sleazy lying.

user-pic

Based on Linda Douglass' comments this morning, I think (if Obama addresses this), they will call McCain out for their fake outrage and trying to turn everything into sexism. Fingers crossed.

Where were these comments?

I believe she was on Morning Joe, but I didn't see the clip.

user-pic

According to the Page: "Obama spokeswoman Linda Douglass says “lipstick” furor is ridiculous and silly, accuses McCain team of “cynically grasping for some excuse” to invoke sexism.

Uh, Obama only down by 5 in WV?

I saw that too.

user-pic

I know. I had to do a double-take. Huge number of undecideds but that's still a pretty surprising number.

user-pic

Good Point -- I hope mainstream media shows these facts too.

user-pic

You can put an asshole in a POW camp and he still comes out an asshole. Like Bush, McCain has been a glorified frat boy for most of his life. Even assholes can have transcendent moments, as McCain did in Vietnam, but their essential character never changes.

I hope Obama puts out an ad showing all of the times McCain has used the phrase "lipstick on a pig." Every time these jerks lie, Obama's campaign should point it out--perhaps a lie du jour feature.

KO's Countdown on MSNBC just added the segment "McCain in the Membrane" which does just what you ask.

KO's Countdown on MSNBC just added the segment "McCain in the Membrane" which does just what you ask.

I've noticed the posting problems start to get bad right around 10am Eastern... I think it's all the lazy left-wing hippies in New York finally getting out of bed combined with those starry-eyed Granola-state left coast lefties getting to the computer after their morning tai chi, Nordic chants, pyramidal meditation, and coffee enemas at the same time.

You think New Yorkers are getting out of bed at 10 a.m.? Hell, we're still out partying on crack, you amateurs.

You know what is really crazy?

I myself have used the phase "putting lipstick on a pig" many times.

But here's the crazy thing... I said it before I'd ever heard of Sarah Palin. That's just weird. I must be psychic or something.

user-pic

I often say a varient: you can spray perfume on a peice of shit, it is still shit.

Actually, I think the "shit" one is a better analogy for the McCain campaign.

You are a sexist.

Are you so stupid as missing the point so clear and so apparent? No one said that Obama is the first person who says "put lipstick on a pig". For a man lacks any originality, this is too much to ask. It is about the context for the use of this idiom. Palin told the whole world that she was a moose with lipstick. No Obama said a pig with lipstick is still a pig. Is it not clear he may be mistaken for saying Palin is a pig? For a Harvard educated lawyer, is it not in his interest to use something better to avoid confusion?

Troll?

user-pic

Yes.

Thanks. Ignored...

It's pretty clear you either don't know what the word context means or that you have a reading comprehension problem.

So now any reference to the word lipstick automatically gets tied back to her? Or is it just any reference to lipstick within two weeks since she said it? What are the rules here? What about pitbull? I can't believe Michael Vick was running a Sarah Palin fighting ring!

Or maybe it wasn't the word lipstick at all. Maybe they automatically thought he talking about her when he used the word "pig".

i love how you give obama advice "avoid confusion". But just a minor point, but she didn't call herself a moose with lipstick, i know, i know, she eats mooseburgers and is the gov of the bigest state in the union and she cured cancer, but she actually called herself a pitbul with lipstick. A minor point, but funny that you went after Obama for his confusion...next time you want to bring up a valid point, come with facts and not your idiotic opnions.

I believe it was a pit bull and not a moose. . . if you are going to troll, at least get the facts straight.

I believe it was a pit bull and not a moose. . . if you are going to troll, at least get the facts straight.

So, using your rules, are you acknowledging that McCain called Hillary a pig?

I thought she said she was a pitbull with lipstick?

They should make an ad that intersperses clips of McCain lying with clips of Reagan saying "there he goes again".

i suggest: "Just because John McCain has time and time again shielded himself with newspapers that give him pass after pass doesn’t mean I was calling him a fish any more than I was calling Gov. Palin a pig. They need to stop searching for red herrings and focus on what is right in front of everyone's face: our economy is in the tank, tens of millions of Americans don't have health insurance, and we don’t know what we’re doing or where we’re going in Iraq."

Good, but I think we can improve on it a bit.

Just for the halibut, they should trout out some real reforms instead of stacking the rotten planks of the GOP together like a bunch of sardines."

OK, so I'm not very good at this, but I think this could be worked on some.

user-pic

The difference is Obama was using a hay-seed cliché and McInsane was talking about Palin.

Could they be baiting the McCain campaign to overplay the sexism card to soften her up for the debates?

GREG - There was a fourth example of McCain using the phrase, much more recently ( MAY 2008 ). I'll see if I can find a link...

user-pic

The difference is Obama was using a hay-seed cliché and McInsane was talking about Palin.

user-pic

I can see why the Republicans are upset: Palin looks quite a bit like a pig. She deffinitely loves her pork too.

I hope Obama uses his address of this nontroversy to hammer home the point that McCain has no honor and is not fit to serve this country in any cappacity.

I'm sure he will say something to effect of "if someone was offended" which is fine as long as pivots and adds a few variations on "my point was McCain is the same as Bush" so those watching will get that message hammered in as much as anything else.

I'll only be happy with a "if someone was offended" statement if it's finished with, "then they're stupid and/or full of shit."

I'm not holding my breath.

user-pic

She's the one who called herself a pitbull in lipstick -

This has gotten so silly.

Also, what better way to dramatically stop McCain attempt at stealing the change slogan than having a huge media circus focus on why he said the statement in the first place.

I see this as a win win for Obama.

That's what I was thinking. Let's hope Obama takes advantage.

I'll join the chorus hoping Obama is unapologetic and nondefensive. These people are shameless!

How can any of you defend this hate-filled trash?! Obama's comment here, just as his use of dusting off Clinton from his shoulders and shoes were clearly intended as insults to both women. Maybe in you immaturity and locker room humor you find this funny but it is not.

If any of these were said to your mom, sister, girlfriend, or wife, would you say, 'Oh, that's okay, it is like when someone was talking about a policy even though here it was against my mom, sister, girlfriend, or wife"? I doubt it. Or, at least I hope you'd have the decency to say "No, that's not right."

LOL! Classic.

I'm going to ask a question and I want an honest answer.

Do you _honestly_ believe this shit? If you take a deep breath for 30 seconds. In. Out. In. Out. Now. Watch the clip.

Was it sexist? Was it even aimed at Palin?

If your answer to either of these is "Yes." I'm sorry - but you sir are an idiot. Grade A. Step out of the spin machine for 30 seconds and try to be rational.

We have SERIOUS issues facing this nation. SERIOUS. This is bullshit. What does any of this have to do with the economy, or the wars we are fighting, or our standing in the world, or our energy crisis. What does it have to do with ANYTHING? Please, tell me.

So, if you're so offended...why are you voting for McCain? He himself, by your own rules, called Hillary a pig. Oh, is it because you're a big racist hypocrite? Maybe because this all a bunch of faux outrage created to distract from the onslaught of negative news about Palin? Yeah, that makes more sense.

Piss off.

My hope for Obama presser:

My friends, I have no intention of apologizing for my use of a very common phrase, one that is so common in fact, that John McCain has used it himself on mulitple occasions in exactly the same way I did. I do not apologize for conjured up "outrage" that a rival campaign sleazily manufactures to score cheap political points. That is exactly the kind of traditional Washington gutter politics that I am running to change. For John McCain to sink to such a dishonorable level in running his own campaign merely confirms that, when it comes to John McCain and "change" in Washington: you can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.

That would be the perfect response. Here's to hoping Obama says something along those lines.

This is politics people! It's not about "truth", it's about creating perception.

Remember all the outrage when the Bush aide remarked about how we, "create our own reality". Well, here it is. That's what politics is all about.

Right now McCain is playing Obama like a fiddle. He's off message, defensive, and now having to likely apologize for a remark simply because the word "lipstick" is trademarked and was used without permission, by Governor Palin.

What Obama needs to do is not apologize, sound defensive, but go on offense. You can't respond tit for tat.

Look for example about the question of education. Obama broadsided McCain about the issue of education.

How did McCain respond? Did he argue his case? Of course not. He broadsided Obama right back on the scurrilous claim that Obama wants to teach Kindergartners how to hide the salami, then tying it up with big bow and asking the American people if they want this pervert leading the country.

See how it works yet?

If Obama doesn't learn how to fight in this political climate, then we are in for another four years of George W. Bush.

Al Giordano reports that Huckabee defended Obama on Fox News about this remark.

HUCKABEE: "It's an old expression, and I'm going to have to cut Obama some slack on that one. I do not think he was referring to Sarah Palin; he didn't reference her. If you take the two soundbites together, it may sound like it. But I've been a guy at the podium many times, and you say something that's maybe a part of an old joke and then somebody ties it in. So, I'm going to have to cut him slack."

http://narcosphere.narconews.com/thefield/open-thread-lipstick-a-pig-edition

He certainly did. It was nice.

John McCain is mentally and morally unfit to be president of the United States.

Blame it on his five and a half years of captivity, blame it on his being "broken" by the Vietnamese, blame it on his busted arms, blame it on whatever you like.

John McCain is mentally and morally unfit to be president of the United States.

Obama's response to this will largely define whether I donate to his campaign again. If he doesn't go after McCain very aggressively, I'll be spending that money on something else. Enough is enough.

user-pic

By all means, darlin - cut off your nose to spite your face.

What good do you think it does to refuse to send him money? You really think YOU can pressure Obama?

Jesus - what a self-absorbed whiner.

I like you, too :-)

It's not that. My point is that if he can't effectively respond to this nonsense, he won't win. I'm not about to throw good money after bad. McCain means a major recession (among other things), I'll be needing the money.

I agree.

Here's my suggestion for a "response" to the McCain Sleaze Ad--create an ad where the assertion is made that McCain favors an environment that allows pedophiles free reign with our children. By decrying attempts to teach kids certain warning signs, McCain is pro-pedophile.

Enough said.

This year I will get a 400% raise. Its obvious that my boss will see that as a good idea. Because, well shit, I believe it in my heart - it must be true!

Obama is a sexist Pig and will lose by 1 million percent. America has already rejected him. Hannity told me so.

We shouldn't be wasting time arguing on *their* terms, we should be debating *our* issues.

I'd like to see more attacks, not personal, but hard attacks on McCain and Palin's policies; here are 4 that would win the election for Obama/Biden in 2 weeks of advertising:

1 -- McCain wants to destroy the only part of our current health care system that works at all -- group health insurance, by adding a new tax on employer provided group health insurance. This is a no-brainer win.

2 -- McCain wants to bankrupt Social Security by diverting money required to pay current and future beneficiaries to privatized accounts. Attack him for this in Florida, and you've won the election. An ad based on this should be running 24x7 in FL.

3 -- Palin wants to make the morning after pill illegal to use, even if your daughter was raped. Does that sound like a small government conservative to you? Or a "Big Mother Party" conservative?

4 -- Palin wants to spend your tax dollars teaching creationism to public school students. How well do you think your children will compete with Chinese and Indian students who learn real science in school?

I don't know if this is what Fox was talking about but he's campaigning in Norfolk, VA right now. Basically he said "Spare me the phony outrage" and is right back to discussing policy.

Right on.

Obama just hit back. Rough transcript:

"They are playing the same game that have made people sick of politics. They know it's catnip for the news...

This is the same old political game... It would be funny but it's phony and foolish diversions rather than about the future. Every four years, this is what we do. We have an energy crisis, and education system that is not working, we have an economy that is creating hardships, we have two wars going on and veterans not being cared for...and this is what they want to talk about. You know who ends up losing at the end of the day --- you do!

Enough! I don't care what they say about me but this election is too important. No more swift boat politics! Enough is enough. These are serious times, and they call for serious debate...

Spare me the phony outrage!"

---

There you go.

Thank you for the report, and thank you Obama!

user-pic

All right! This is the Obama I've been waiting to see! (I like that "catnip for the news" part -- that's catchy!)

user-pic

it's okay for gov. palin to call herself a pitbull- a dog- a FEMALE dog (i would imagine)...a "bitch" essentially...but when sen. obama says "you can put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig" without ever referring directly to gov. palin- that's sexist?

this isn't a double standard; this is dog-whistle reactionary nonsense. real sexism exists and does run as an undercurrent to this presidential election. it does not exist, specifically, in this exchange about animals and lipstick.

Calling Palin a pig would be a gross insult.

To pigs. They're harmless and useful. Palin is neither.

Here's a little e-mail I recieved from a dedicated Democrat here in Texas. Let it light a fire under our behinds:

"Friends,

Are you sick as I am of those bastards stealing the image of Maverick for their campaign? ... do they not know that the real Maverick family was Texas liberal royalty? They were powerful supporters of the New Deal, fought for the underdog, civil rights and so on.
His obituary stated:
"Mr. Maury Maverick, .... ''the last angry man in America,'' contested Jim Crow laws, supported labor unions and derailed an effort by the Texas Legislature to extend the death penalty to Communist Party members. He defended draft resisters, represented atheists and won a Supreme Court case against the F.B.I.'s seizure of publications from a Texas bookstore on charges that they were seditious."

The popular term comes from his rancher-grandfather, Samuel Maverick, an early Texas settler.

This family is the very antithesis of the McCain-Palin pretenders who would defile this fine name for personal gain.

First, Bush expropriated Texas to win the Whitehouse and now McCain returns to try the same thing.

Remember what they did to the word "Swiftboat" in 2004... are we going to just sit here and let it happen?

I say No!"

OMG... I just realized... if this entire thing was a ploy to get the news cycle back in his favor with everyone covering him so he can make a monumental speech about honor, character, and integrity...

FRIGGIN BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!

user-pic

Well lalo, since you troll this board nonstop, do you really expect people to think I'm full of shit instead of you?

Good luck.

Good response from Obama

I just saw John McPig and Sarah Piglin described on ABC News blog as KERMIT & MISS PIGGY.

TOO FUNNY!!!

GREAT IMAGE!!!

CAN WE GET AN OBAMA 527 AD WITH THOSE CHARACTERS?

LOLOLOL

It's time to unleash the hounds.
Surrogates, 527s, supporters, where are you?

user-pic

They all disbanded because Obama told them to. Bad and naive decision on his part. Real bad.

user-pic

I heard on Rachel Maddow last night that Obama has quietly put the word around that his campaign will no longer raise objections to independent efforts to go after John McCain.

I just saw John McPig and Sarah Piglin described on ABC News blog as KERMIT & MISS PIGGY.

LOLOLOL

I think it's great - I don't think the original remark was meant to refer to Palin, but I think the image of her as a VP being akin to putting lipstick on a pig will now have general currency and will be reinforced every time another story comes out revealing how her past actions belie her current statements.

Yep, Dems, buck up because there are over 50 days left and this has just started. If they are throwing out the "sex in kindergarten" ad already, imagine what they have left in their arsenal.

Meanwhile, the McCain campaign will whine and cry about "family" and "sexism" when the Obama camp or media so much as sneeze.

Everything is off limits according to the McCain camp.

Everyone says it! Good lord, McCain.

BARNYARD FIRST!!!

KERMIT ? MISS PIGGY 08!!!

LOLOL!

ALL MEDIA SHOULD BE FIRED FOR NOT DOING THEIR JOB IF THIS STORY IS NOT SLASHED & BURNED:

The fact PalinMcBush have been allowed to spur such salacious bull without being called by all media networks is beyond comprehension.

Saying Barack wanted to teach sex education to kindergartner's is sickening. The Rethuglican party is truly the party of lies, fears and smears. This old geezer talks about honor and love for his country-- please, give me a break. If McCain really loved this country he wouldn't have been in lock-step with Bush 90% of the time and as a result help assist in damaging the American people's spirits.

McCain needs to man up and talk about the issues [oh, that's right-- his RECORD sucks on the ISSUES & his campaign adviser did say this election wasn't going to be about the issues that the American people care about] and stop standing behind that political woman pick you say is ready the be president if something should happen to you.

I was taught that liars shortened their days, and by the looks of it McCain doesn't have many left. I hope Palin is ready on day one.

['I'm John McCain and I approve lies, fears and smears... and so does my running mate Sarah Palin and the entire Republican Party.'...'How was that Mr. Rove?']

It's time for Obama to say "ENOUGH" to all the distracting lies that are being thrown out by the McCain campaign.
Get back to his message and let the McCain people find something else to talk about.
If you want to be a leader, then lead. Don't keep reacting to McCain's bait.

Totally agree. Things have to be put into perspective. McCain people may be too quick to take offensive but anyone does not think Obama does not give him an openning? What is this stupid line of fish still smells bad after 8 years? After 8 years, would not any smell be totally gone because it is now so dry? Does this man have any common sense?

user-pic

Totally disagree. Obama needs to be able to speak with colloquial color. It can't be interpreted as being directed at Pail (or the fish remark at McCain), but even if someone wanted to go out of the way to believe it was a personal barb, if the shoe fits...

If you watch the tape, there is a moment right after he delivers the line when he is almost physically 'off balance' Watching it, I would imagine him thinking

"Huh? Why are they yelling so loud .... oh ... oh, no.... crap! I bet they think I'm referring to Palin because of what she said about lipstick .. which is ridiculous ... but that means the other side is going to think it or say they do .. okay, quick, what's another similar analogy so maybe I can make it clear, right now, what I meant .. got it, fish in newspaper"

Watch the tape - it is a longish pause which local talk radio is interpreting as "milking the moment and letting the applause build" But look at his face. He was taken by surprise (he hadn't thought it was an applause line) and thinking furiously.

I dare say he's now removing from his vocabulary all things like 'lipstick' 'make-up' 'skirt' 'high heels' etc. etc.

So Sarah Palin is now the SMEARED lipstick on the pig? Sounds about right.

user-pic

Maverick is Arizonan for Liar.

So, now, Gov Mooseillini has trademarked the term lipstick? Imagine that fuss this will cause at the cosmetics counter at Nordstrom's.

One thing that Obama always had going for him was his ability NOT to take the bait, and NOT to react to the way others framed the debate. He was the one framing the issues, and now he's gone on the defensive. But, I really want to know what happened to offense.

I also wonder if this faux outrage in the McSame camp resonates with swing voters in swing states....Or, if they too recognize it as a distraction?

He could say: Of course she's not a pig. That would be rude. But she does wear lipstick.

John McCain and his campaign team are reprobates of the highest order. McCain is a sleazy old man with a degenerate mind. How could he approve an Ad of this nature if his mind is not in the gutter. This Ad is repulsive and John McCain, Karl Rove, Rick Davis and their entire team are disgraceful, miserable wretches.

McCain-Palin-Rove-Davis are disgusting human beings. People should be sick and tired of their nastiness. The only change I see McCain calling for is a change for the worse. McCain change = from bad to worse.

McCAIN IS A CHANGE FOR THE WORSE.

He could say: "You're right. She's not a pig. But she does wear lipstick."

barack is finished

Who cares, Greg? Who the hell cares? This "firing back" garbage gets you nowhere. Obama needs to start attacking McCain instead of defending himself. Instead of "firing back". He needs to attack McCain's record. He needs to attack McCain's integrity. He needs to attack McCain's credibility. But above all, he needs to quit firing back. Quit reacting. Get off the ropes. Put McCain on the ropes and keep him there.

"Ready to Smear? Yes"

If this isn't the clearest case of projection ever seen in politics, then I'll eat my hat.

TPM - please get better/faster servers - your site can't go down for the next 60 days!

The server isn't the problem. It's the software. The software they're using can't scale itself to the traffic they're receiving. It's lousy software. They can run as many servers as they like, and it won't help. They need decent blogging software.

Un-freakin believable ...

What a sleazefest this campaign has quickly become!

How about an ad showing McCain referring to Hillary's healthcare plan as a pig with lipstick, my friends? As he did during the primary ...

The Couric footage was from the Clinton / Obama primary and not related to Palin, either!

How about showing footage of Dick Morris & Palin saying that women always whine about sexism??

What a joke ... they have played the gender card on steroids in just 2 weeks! Compare this to the Dems running Ferraro in '84.

Interesting article on Joe Scarborough that has been kept quiet by the MSM!

http://www.truthalliance.net/Archive/tabid/67/a...

Lest, we forget, there would have been no need for a Surge if Bush & Co. had not taken the U.S. into a Phony & Pretend War on Terrorism while the Real War on Terrorism in Afghanistan where Bin Ladin lived, was ignored! And if we do not Wise up this might happen in the future!
http://www.youtube.com/v/PdJUCU1UH2w

In a cleverly pre-emptive strike, McCain is falsely accusing Obama of wanting to teach children sex education because they knew Newsweek will be soon coming out with an article on Sarah Palin! "Judge Warned Palin About Emotional Child Abuse

The media treats everything the republicans say as newsworthy. "mccain is upset about lipstick comment. mccain thinks obama is a celebrity. mccain thinks the media is sexist." what does mccain think about the economy, choice, iraq, …
obama needs to go back to hope and change and let the republicans lie, lie, lie!

So now the Republican Party owns the word "Lipstick"? Does that mean no one else can use "Lipstick" without their permission? Better let Max Factor and the other cosmetic companies know before they get into copy right trouble.

I know the Republican Party is big into respecting ownership rights as example all the music they played without permission during the convention and the fact that Heart has warned them twice about using their music.

But I think letting them have a copy right on the English launage is going a bit to far.

Context. Does anyone here understand what the word context means? Listen to the crowd in the video after Obama says the word lipstick. The crowd gets it. Obama got it. Look at the self-satisfied smirk on his face. And 98% of the cool-aid drinkers here don't get it. Or maybe they do and are so ashamed of their candidate for stooping this low that they won't admit it.

The problem with this is that Obama says this is just a smoke screen to cover up not talking about the real issues and the MSM agrees as they cover the "Lip Stick Gate" story for the uptenth time. So it's working. Obama should have just played the clip of Palin tell Clinton to quit whinning.

If this is a SERIOUS campaign about SERIOUS issues during SERIOUS times why is a SERIOUS candidate talking about lipstick on a pig? Inexperienced community Organizers from Chicago should stay away from farm humor involving barnyard animals they know nothing about.

This is all very true, but did I mention that John was a POW,and she has children?

Sigh. I guess we're stuck with day-in, day-out coverage of Sarah Palin, her gender, her looks, her "feisty" persona, and the inane hashing of the meaningless muck that comprises the bulk of American political coverage. We should all be beyond nausea at the prospect of groping our way to November with perhaps twenty percent of actual voters grasping the fact that they are picking a President of the United States, while the rest flop around the deck like mackerel -- bug-eyed and oblivious to the chum bucket that awaits.

This truth-squad and ad-based whining is very
reminiscent of the aftermath of the Kerry/Bush
debate where Kerry stated what is widely and
openly known. Namely he mentioned Cheney's gay
daughter, in proper context and in a way relevant
to his over-all comment.

The next day Cheney's wife gave a public statement
where she seemed to be on the verge of tears and
said something to the effect of: "all I know is
this is NOT a good man" (quivering voice here).
The even had her standing out in the open rather
than behind a podium which struck me as making
her look vulnerable.

Then like now, the message very much relies
upon the campaign's hope that their voters are
uniformed and easily manipulated.

Obama's remark "Lipstick on a Pig", gaff or calculated?

Only if you believe Barrack Obama is a gifted orator who knows how to play to an audience would you be offended by a remark that seemingly jabs Sarah Palin? You would also have to know the street use of this term, analogous to putting a paper bag over a woman's head before sexual intercourse
