McCain Cancels CNN Interview As Punishment For Criticizing Palin
It looks like the McCain camp is now actively taking steps to punish media outlets that give them bad coverage.
Wolf Blitzer just reported that the campaign has cancelled a scheduled interview with Larry King due to an unfriendly segment last night on CNN -- the segment we flagged last night where the network's Campbell Brown grilled McCain spokesperson Tucker bounds over Sarah Palin's lack of foreign policy experience.
Here's last night's segment:
Blitzer said the McCain campaign complained that Campbell Brown's grilling of Tucker Bounds over Sarah Palin's lack of foreign policy experience was "over the line."

Actually, they come pre-folded. This will prevent any contemplated unfolding.

I agree they've done a great job screwing with the media over the years.
I'm not so sure they're doing it here.
I think its more likely they are scared to be asked questions about Palin, while faking indignation!
They're even scared of Larry King of Softballs!
Love it.

It seems that the Official Right Wing Talking Point(tm) of the day was decided sometime last night after they just looked completely goofy trying to defend the indefensible.
Noticed this morning early - Morning Joe was on a tear about the "Liberal NYTimes" printing anything on the baby, daughters pregnancy was all the fault of the liberal left and having no respect for family values and people's privacy!! His Indignation was not shared by his Co-Host Mika nor by his three guests across the table - they basically told Joe to grow up!!
By canceling King they've basically conceded the point that they can't make a plausible case that they picked someone ready for the office of VP let alone a President.
Hope MSNBC asks for interviews and see what the McCain't Camp responds with - only allow interviews with pre-selected hosts of known GOP leanings (Mitchell, Scarborough) with pre-selected questions?? Likely!!
So it's going to circle around to the point where the only Media Outlet they have left is Fox. Note that in many places in the "heartland" Fox has a monopoly on cable news - which is just the demographic they want.
Where they will scream: Liberal Elitists Sexist Pigs!!

McCain's Boys have to get something straight here - their boy is not GWB, Republicans are not popular any more, and pissing off the media does nothing more than piss off the media.
I'm thinking that the MSM has had enough. I wouldn't be surprised if CNN just uses the fact that McCain cancelled the interview as a news story and just jabbers about that for a few hours.
Seriously - does CNN need McCain as badly as McCain needs CNN these days?

Precisely.
The media needs to get a pair and push back hard.
Campbell asked specific, non-judgmental, questions that Tucker was unable to answer.
She was not in anyway over the line.
Where Tucker came up with that belittle line, I have no clue...when someone asks for specifics that is not belittling!!
What is clear is that these folks are parrots of talking points and have a set menu of choices to give in responding that have nothing whatsoever to do what is being asked.
CNN, should not cover the RNC convention for an entire 3 hours during primetime in response to McCain's little temper tantrum.
I am glad to see he is showing his ass!!
Keep it up...let the nation see what a asswipe they could be electing.

Perfectly stated:
Same thing with Pawlenty on MTP Sunday, and Brokaw called him on it a few times, albeit in the gentle Brokaw style. All the while I was thinking that the Republicans had saved themselves some huge embarrassment by not throwing Pawlenty into the ring with Biden, and how the interview would have gone with Russert still alive.

That's definitely what they're trying to do, but I think it's too early. Remember the media is first and foremost a tabloid feeding frenzy and they're not going to let this horse go until they've beat it to death. Pushback at this point is going to get overwhelmed by the story -- it's also going to weaken the argument. They should've waited to play that card until a little further in the story arc. Now the media's going to tread the line carefully around anything that could be construed as sexist while also ignoring the "stop, please" commands.
That's why it's desperate to me -- poorly timed and poorly executed.
September 2, 2008 5:45 PM | Reply | Permalink
Seriously, look at the talking points they've got out today -- Rove's saying "not a governing decision but a campaign decision" and Ed Schultz is saying "this election is not about the issues." They've backed off the "she's experienced argument" and are now insisting they were trying to counter Obama's personality. Constantly shifting argument equals strategy no good.

The question is whether it's stupider to be seen as running away, or to be seen as defending the indefensible. In this case, I'd take running over spinning, especially if -- and I think this may be an affirming indication -- an Eagleton scenario is on the table at McCain HQ. If Palin is going to be spending her days at the Mug Shot Saloon this election season, no reason to have McCain himself on TV defending her.

Good for the McCain camp! The last thing they need is their candidate on the station that had the highest ratings during last week's Dem Convention. Just let all of those viewers get their news from the pundits the McCain's campaign doesn't agree with rather than from the candidate himself. Of course, what this is really about is Palin...with the mountain of bad press coming out about her, there is simply no way McCain can expect a softball interview. He really didn't want to have to answer King's inevitable question: "So, will Palin have to be removed from the ticket?"

Everything changes, simply because it's a Republican under the spotlight. Asking questions about her experience is "sexist". I'm completely ok with that, just as long as we stop asking questions about Obama, as well.
I mean, seriously: can't Governor Palin stand up to a little scrutiny? We can scrutinize every word, action, writing, speech, neighbor, preacher, distant acquaintance of Barack Obama, but when we ask about Governor Palin's experience, that's being sexist?
How much more could the Republicans infantilize Sarah Palin?

Hmmm. Like a lot of people, I suspect that he really will need to dump her at some point -- revelations out of the Last Frontier are not going to be pretty, and every one with reinforce the (accurate) perception that McCain acted recklessly in naming her. If he's going to dump, the politically least ruinous time to do it is now, as disastrous as that seems. The later, the worse. He certainly can't do it after the Oct 2 VP debate. I wouldn't be shocked if she withdrew and he named Jindal, who is at least as popular with the religious conservatives who appear to hold a veto over McCain's every move. They would then blame the press and the "liberal bloggers" for creating an environment in which Gov. Palin can't continue, consistent with her family obligations.

Obviously, CNN should see if Sen. Obama would be willing to take some time out this evening to answer questions... I'm sure there's an affiliate, or an office with a polycom they could use in Chicago.
I've finally figured out what Sen. McCain and Gov. Palin have in common... petty, spiteful vindictiveness.

I recall my teen son, getting mad once at being disciplined and telling us...if you do that ...I will drink and drive!!
He said that to punish us, his parents. lol
McCain sounds just the same, you ask tough questions and I won't come on your show.
You don't play the game by my rules, I will take my bat and ball and go home.
You won't let me have that transformer, well I am going to just cause one big ruckus in this aisle and let everyone know what a mean Mommy monster you are!!
McCain is a JERK and Palin is a cunning shrewd operator who masks it all behind MS. Congeniality!!
What a pair...she will probably neuter McCain by election day...what a sight that will be. She will have him walking around with a ring in his nose. Calling him her BigTeddy...McCain is a sucker for women. Sarah and Cindy are put his testicles in a vise. Two pageant queens. Serves his chauvinistic butt right.

Let me get this straight: Campbell Brown, hardly a practitioner of rough journalism, quite properly eviscerates Tucker Askew on McCain's utterly unqualified VP pick. So now McCain refuses to be interviewed by Larry King. McCain is playing CNN. Now we'll find out if CNN has any balls. BTW: The over/under for Roundheels Blitzer to beg forgiveness is one day. Yet another brilliant Custer Decision.
Anyone who thinks this is a carefully calculated decision is over-estimating them. Again. This is just yet another instance where McCain's eyes turned red and he lashed out at those who would dare question his judgment. (Goddamn little punks. Where were they when he was in the Hanoi Hilton, anyway?)

I agree with the McCain camp, Brown's comments were out of line. She was obviously trying to intimidate Tucker. This segment was undignified. It shows the blatant partisanship of CNN.
Though I'm not sure that McCain should deny an interview, Obama has never agreed to be interviewed by media outlets like FOX, nor will he have public debates with McCain. Obama much prefers soaring rhetoric to actual answers to questions. Anyone who critizes McCain on this but not Obama has a double standard.

Even if 100% of what you're crying about were true (and I can't even see 10%), it does nothing to mitigate the awful judgement McCain used in his first important decision, from vetting to to selection to giving no thought of the dead bodies he would leave behind in his own party (Romney, Kay Baily Hutcheson, for example).
Not only is she not qualified, she brings pre-packedged scandel. No waiting! Just add a little vetting, work McCain could not be bothered to do.
It's not about Obama. It's not about CNN. It's not about Bristol Palin and her hunky monkey. It's about both McCain's and Palin's awful judgement, and it's not complicated to get to. America is watching.

First of all there was nothing brutal about a reporter asking about the foreign policy credentials of a VP pick and trying to the get the representative of the campaign to actually answer the questions. Second, my sense is that they don't want McCain to do the interview simply because they are worried about how that will go. If they want to punish news organizations for being news organanizations and purely propaganda support then we should all send kudos to the news organizations every time they actually act like news organizations so that they know we know the difference.
This woman might have to face terrorists and world leaders that will mop the floor with her. Surely we have a right to ask her questions on foreign policy.

As I was reading a recent post on MSNBC talking about how the boyfriend of Palin's daughter was flying to Minn to join in the fun, I was struck with the description of the boyfriend...He's 18. I'm not sure what the laws are like in Alaska, but in many states, an 18 yr. old having sex with a 16 year old (even if it is consensual) is grounds for statutory rape or some form of sexual misconduct crime.

Not in Alaska. Sex between an 18 year-old and a 16 year-old is ok.
However, I did read today that the BF described himself in his MySpace page (already deleted, sadly) as a "fuckin' redneck."
Nice.

I've seen the talking point that the teen pregnancy will be "good" for Palin, making her seem more "normal" and "average." I heard this on NPR and saw it on Politico as well as somewhere else I can't remember. Yeah, right; we need a normal, average veep just a heartbeat away from the presidency. After all, having a president you'd like to have a beer with has worked out so well for us.

Even before Cheney, the VEEP had moved well beyond the warm bucket of piss era. The job calls for a lot of saavy and an ability to be multitask issues in this very complex world.
It is not a job for Sarah Palin. However "normal" she looks is just not relevant. Even people back home in Michigan who are die-hard GOPers do not like this pick. Among the women I know, the response has been universal: she needs to be home with those kids.

The damage has been done.
Option One: She stays in.
Consequences: Voters recognize how little she has thought on most substantive matters and how extreme her social positions are. Their thoughts turn to McCain's advanced age, his many bouts with cancer, and her proximity to the highest post in the nation. Obama wins in a walk.
Option Two: She withdraws. Scramble for the replacement. Voters are shaken in their perception of McCain. This does not jibe with his "experience, judgement" argument. He only met her twice, and look how that turned out. Bad judgement. And who would volunteer to take the token's place? No pol with ambition for the top spot himself, that's for sure. Obama wins in a walk.
-- This is why I think Jindal, Romney, Huckabee, Guiliani, and Pawlenty are out. They all have a shot for the next cycle, so why would they tie themselves to a sinking ship? You don't willingly associate with losers. That leaves Faithful Joe. (Somehow think Ridge would bristle at being a second choice.)

Now the Dems need to hold networks feet to the fire, although not in the public way pursued by Team McCain.
Obama has been the subject of intense media scrutiny since Iowa, ostensibly because people need to get acquainted with his policies, past record, personality and family history. Even though coverage has skewed heavily towards sensationalist pulp - flag pins, Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, "race card" questions - Obama himself has conceded that since he's unknown the extra, albeit largely negative, coverage is legitimate.
Here comes Sarah Palin, chosen not after a grueling 16 month primary in which nearly well over 30 million citizens cast their vote, but to buoy the sinking campaign of John McCain by reestablishing his credentials as a maverick. Yet McCain won't let the MSM so much as ask a spokesman for his campaign to defend his characterization of her credentials by supplying a piece of simple data.
Not even the MSM will stand for this folks, and I'd be surprised if team Obama wasn't working the refs, in its own respectful, behind the scenes way. I don't think the MSM will cave, Brown defended her questions well during the questioning, making Bounds look petulant. For those with more media experience, how would this work and is it plausible? I don't think the MSM will cave, Brown defended her questions well during the questioning, making Bounds look petulant.

So how is it that her Party says Palin never supported Buchanan when Buchanan (in the second part of this video) says she was a prominent supporter?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZU9GGBI2jM
I wonder if Buchanan's flat contradiction in one segment of all he'd said in the prior segment has anything to do with the kind of pressure McCain Inc. put on CNN today.

Larry King would probably not offend you if he knew you were fucking his wife in his own house.
Campbell Brown would bend over in front of a G.O.P operative in honor of her Hubby.
Are you kidding me?
B.S. The whole thing is a farce. Wolf Fuckshit Blitzer has zero integrity. Nope. None. CNN is just trying to position themselves as hard-hitting, but in reality they are ass-kissing dog and pony show for McLame.
McShame can do no better job than a corpse in defending the Palin pick, and you can have a mind of a two year old to figure out its an indefinsible pick.
When did calling spade a spade become hard journalism?
McCain-CNN tiff is a joke.
Larry: Sen. McCain, how does it feel to be a great American?
McCain: Well Larry, it feels great to be a American always...blah...blah...blah...

crudely put, the mccain/media relationship has been a circle jerk. if mccain stops stroking, the media won't give him his happy ending.
to mix the metaphor with my preferred analogy for the mccain campaign: mccain the compulsive gambler (with the deep pockets and the massive credit card debt) is overplaying all of his hands. the media is the house and they've always extended him an overly generous line of credit. as he turns every good hand he's got into losers by overplaying them (eg, POW POW POW), the house is starting to get nervous about all of the credit they've extended him. if he starts to get belligerent with the media, they're gonna revoke his account and he'll be forced to play on his own dime.
(mccain's already gotten snippy because the media's been extending credit to his opponent to keep him in the game. and obama's been playing some strong hands. compulsive gambler mccain is gonna need some serious meds to keep his volatile temper in check.)

Obama was interviewed by Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, 4/27/08:

There's no chance that Palin will be dumped. For one thing, the Christianist base has rallied to her and to McCain, and the money has started flowing in at a greatly increased rate because of that. The evangelicals have made it clear that no kind of personal moral turpitude (as they would term it if it were involving the Democratic ticket) will affect their support. It's OK if You're a "Christian" Republican.
Second, there's nothing in McCain's record or makeup to suggest he's going to capitulate. He's combative to a fault, and relishes the role of the brave warrior besieged by enemies on every side. I expect he'll deliver a hearty, Zell Milleresque defense of Palin at some point during the convention.
The only thing that would result in Palin's removal would be hard evidence of criminal acts such as bribery or tax fraud. Otherwise she's going to get a free pass from the McCainiacs regardless. Obama and Biden better buckle their chinstraps because it's going to get extremely rough from here on, and media types like Campbell Brown will be few and far between.

As I said, Larry King wouldn't grill you even if you slept with his wife in his own house, if McLame can't answer Larry, then he's scared as shit to defend Palin by all accounts.
I expect her to withdraw, or atleast McLame is contemplating the possibility. I wouldn't appoint her to run the community center in poughkeepsie, forget VP. Gawd, she's unfit as they come.

Yes, they remind me of rebellious teens. I beleive the professionals call that stunted development. They are stuck in a specific maturation realm.

Dear Memo-writers,
"McCAIN CANCELS INTERVIEW AFTER PALIN CRITICISM" ???? That's the headline on TPM???? Do you write your own headlines? Did you watch the segment? Buy bridges much? Should reasonably have read "McCAIN CANCELS INTERVIEW WHEN SPOKESMAN UNABLE TO ANSWER BASIC, LEGITIMATE QUESTION ENGENDERED BY OVERBLOWN McCAIN CAMP CLAIMS OF PALIN QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE/MILITARY CREDENTIALS(wtf?)"
To further debase the dialogue, the headline on the linked page goes further with "McCain Cancels Interview as Punishment for Criticizing Palin". Where's the criticism? A reporter finally does their job and asks legitimate questions and YOU choose to characterize it as CRITICISM???!!!!!
Your framing makes the reporter's action seem scandalous, rather than implicity condemning the McCain/Palin ticket for being afraid of honest, legitimate inquiry by the press which might be encouraged to do its job for once in a natural lifetime.
"McCAIN RUNS FROM TOUGH QUESTIONERS"
A meme with legs.
P.S. Make no mistake. This site is awesome!

If the democrats make a mistake, someone gets pregnant, there is an affair, the Republicans go nuts..."sinful liberals." With the possible VP's unwed young daughter now pregnant, I have heard no such rhetoric from the Dems. I happen to agree that "family should be off-limits."
As a practicing Christian, independent voter, where is the honesty? I vote the candidate, but this one is becoming clearer day by day. If a potential President gets angry at the media and shuts it down, what will happen behind closed doors later?
And where is his "connection" with the common person? I have one small house that we can barely afford. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm......we all need to think VERY carefully in November. May God bless us all when we make our choice.
