Letting Sarah Palin Answer Questions Is Very, Very Dangerous
The lengths the McCain campaign is going to in order to shield Sarah Palin from questioning are reaching truly comic dimensions.
Check out this nugget from the pool report, via Jonathan Martin, on John McCain and Palin's meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko:
McCain then looked around the room and gestured as if to welcome questions. The AP reporter shouted a question at Gov. Palin ("Governor, what have you learned from your meetings?") but McCain aide Brooke Buchanan intervened and shepherded everybody out of the room.Palin looked surprised, leaned over to McCain and asked him a question, to which your pooler thinks he shook his head as if to say "No."
Palin can't even be allowed to answer a question as basic as this?
What's really sobering is that the McCain campaign continues to block Palin from answering questions even though it's now resulting in reams and reams of bad press for the McCain-Palin ticket. That suggests McCain advisers know that letting her answer even the most elementary questions in an uncontrolled environment is so dangerous that it's worth weathering the current media drubbing they're taking in order to prevent it from happening at all costs.
Has anyone pointed out that McCain has placed Palin a heartbeat away from the presidency?

This is reaching self-parody dimensions...

I can't wait until the MEDIA begins taking this SERIOUSLY and begins INFORMING the viewer/reader that THIS IS NOT TO BE TOLERATED, and WHY that is the reality.
I assure you, not being a child, I'm not getting ANY laughs out of what is shaping up as a disaster greater even than that of 2000 AND the last 8 years combined.
Do you REALIZE that an UNELECTED candidate and his campaign for FEDERAL office have TAKEN OVER the gov't of a state -- Alaska -- of which the candidate is NOT a citizen, and is engaged in blatant CRIMINAL obstruction of jutice, and the response from some is how all of this is "comic"!?
December 2000 was hilarious too, apparently. And some are still rolling on the floor over 12/12/2000.

Greg - I have to disagree as to the motives of the McCain campaign. I think they are trying to set up the press by lowing the expectation levels for her debate with Biden to the lowest in history. Then at the debate, she's suddenly be able to speak in complete sentences and recite some pointless talking points and everyone will be "amazed that we were so wrong about Sarah".
The McCain camp can't honestly be that scared of letter her answer something like this, it has to be part of a greater strategy although one that I don't believe will work as well as they would hope.

No, they just don't want her to stick her foot in her mouth before the debate. Then the questioning will be "Why did you say we are willing to go war with Peru?" This isn't some grand strategy on McCain's part. This is just damage control. They're trying to stumble through to the election, nothing more.

The problem is, as evidenced by last night's Campbell Brown piece, their strategy is beginning to boomerang on them. The narrative is quickly moving from, "Is Palin qualified to be Vice President" to "John McCain is so old fashioned and sexist that he doesn't believe that his own VP pick can stand on her own two feet and answer questions that should be expected of someone seeking high office". That's a narrative that's absolutely deadly to McCain, but apparently inside their media bubble, the McCain camp hasn't picked up on that yet.

I also believe they are trying to lower expectations.
Remember there was a huge firestorm surrounding Palin when she first was selected. There was no access to her, and then she gave a rousing speech at the convention, which sucker-punched all the critics.
I don't think these criticisms will necessarily help the Democratic side very much.

Where is Palin's accountability? Honestly, it's also rather sexist to imply, as Campbell Brown did, that the mean old men are controlling her. She's a governor of a state, not a 12-yr-old child. She's capable of making her own choices. If she really wanted to speak, she wouldn't let anyone stop her.

She's a candidate for Vice President, and the Constitution specifies that the President and Vice President run together on the same ticket. If she, and McCain, are serious candidates then she (as McCain) must speak. If, instead, this is more like Pat Paulson running for President for decades starting in 1948, then we can all treat it accordingly (and laugh, while voting for Obama/Biden).

I've been saying this - it's the epitome of sexism.
First McLame, a dirty old man, just hands her a position of potential great power that she isn't qualified for except that she's "hot." (according to some.)
Then his campaign puts her in purdah - and will not let anyone near her.
Who does McLame think he is? Saladin? Is this his harem or what?

Sullivan has been right about this all along. This is the biggest farce ever pulled in the history of presidential elections. And Campbell Brown's outburst is completely legitimate. The "Free Sarah Palin!" battle cry of the MSM could become the final nail in the coffin of McCain's disastrous campaign and today's interview with Katie Couric won't be enough to calm them down.

I hate the "Free Palin" schtick because it implies she is a victim -- she is not. She is a grown woman capable of making choices. And "free Palin" also completely absolves Palin of responsibility for the situation: if she's a prisoner, then it's not her fault that she's not speaking to the press. In fact, it is her fault. If she wanted to speak, she would.

Why outrage? Why not contempt?
Outrage is useful for about 10 seconds, any longer than that and you are bound to make some stupid mistakes.
Look we are all Americans and as awful as the prospect seems McCain and Palin may take office. It seems we have a right to demand that she sit for a frickin' job interview at some point.
Apparently McCain holds the people in such low regard he seems he can deny us that. I have contempt for that attitude. I think the great middle of the country will agree eventually.
Then again if she does an adequate job at the debate, which given all the rules and constraints if very possible, all this may go away. If she performs poorly at the debate or appears evasive or non-response this is going to hurt him very badly.

On one of the cable shows last night someone suggested they are just holding her back until after the debates so that there won't be any specific gaffes that come up during the debate itself. This sounds plausible, especially since after the debate everyone will know she is incoherent so they may as well let her speak rather than suffer the continuing bad press from hiding her away.

I think the reason that they may be holding off as long as possible is that several states have entered the early voting stage. So the longer they can keep her from scaring away already committed voters the better.

Sequestering Palin from the press only makes things worse for her, as every rare non-scripted utterance she makes is then scrutinized even more carefully.
The reason Biden's gaffes are dismissed (besides the fact that he is one smart dude) is that he speaks unscripted frequently.

Absolutely. Additionally, Obama is not trying to remake or repackage Biden into something he is not.

There's just something that doesn't make sense to me about his choice of Sarah Palin. Were they totally unaware of the financial crisis coming down the pike? Did they really think non-evangelical women were going to be impressed by Palin?
His choice of her seems so much weaker in light of everything that's happened in the last week. If he had chosen Mitt Romney, Romney could have stepped forward and dealt with the press, and credibly so.
If the Bush admin has really been sitting on this plan for awhile, you would think they would have tipped off McCain and his advisers.

She will never answer any press questions, ever.
And no, this isn't seen as a sign that she is scared. It is read as a sign by her supporters. that she is strong, stronger than everyone. She is applauded on the Right for putting the traitorous Press in their places. She's "schooling" them of what to expect - crumbs if they are lucky! Kicks are what they deserve!
McCain has canceled the debates because he knows he is ahead and is just going to ride out the clock!

Before there were parties there were no parties. And before that the Constitution was framed and ratified. Regardless how many candidates their wre, the person who got the most votes was president. The person who got the second most was VP.
The were not always from the the same "party".

Two words you will never hear Sarah Palin say: "Next question."

The interview with Katie Couric was a graphic example of why they won't let Sarah be in a situation where she has no choice but to answer questions put to her. That was a disaster! She's better off in situations where she can pretend she didn't hear the question and run away. It terrifies me to think somebody would seriously consider her vice president material.

uhm, dude,
you're holding that poll the wrong way
you're looking at the graph upside down
sarah palin is goin DOWN in the polls every time she speaks
when America hears her condesending little "I'll get back to you" quip to Katie Couric, most of America is gonna say "Don't bother"

Maybe their scared someone will ask her about her relation ship with AKIP, who's founder said 'The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for America'
Here's an interview with the AKIP Chairman on Palin's involvement

"The lengths the McCain campaign is going to in order to shield Sarah Palin from questioning are reaching truly comic dimensions."
Comic!? Are you out of your mind? This is terrifying, and the media is practically treating it as normal -- ACCEPTABLE.
How bad must things get before DENSE ASSHOLES cease speaking of the dire as "comic"?
