GOP House Candidate Calls Black Newscaster "Uppity"
It looks like more than one prominent Georgia Republican likes to use the word "uppity" in regards to prominent African-Americans -- this time, it's the GOP nominee in one of the few House seats that Dems could possibly lose this year.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Rick Goddard, a retired Air Force major general running against conservative Dem Congressman Jim Marshall, referred in a radio appearance to "a very uppity newscaster" who had a testy TV exchange with Newt Gingrich at the Republican Convention. This appeared to be a reference to MSNBC reporter Ron Allen, who is black.
The Goddard campaign didn't deny that he was discussing Ron Allen, telling the Journal-Constitution that Goddard "simply evoked a word -- that by definition -- described the reporter's demeanor as being superior, arrogant and presumptuous."
This comes after Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) told The Hill that he believed both Barack and Michelle Obama were "uppity," then denied that there was any racial connotation to the word.

That's sick. To think they're getting away with that shit, too. ... I need to go cool off. This stuff really makes me angry and upset.

I had that exact same response. I see fringe repubs using it publicly then a couple talking heads start the redefinition by defending the new use of "uppity" in the contexts defined by the fringe types. Pretty soon the right wing rehabilitates another one of the racial code words for use by the national right wing loonies(tm).

I guess they are trying to show (through repetition) that "uppity" isn't a bad word, doesn't have racist connotations unless you're a PC type.
At the same time, the expression "lipstick on a pig" is all of a sudden the most egregious sexist attacks ever launched.

Remember, the Southern version of the GOP is simply the old "Southern Caucus" of the Democratic Party pre-1964. Some things, unfortunately, haven't changed in the white power structure down there-they just switched parties.

I grew up in segregated times and in a segregated place. "Uppity" was mistly used in racial contexts I believe.
But even if that weren't true, it is still inappropriate to apply to any journalist.
Uppity as I remember it had connotations of insubordinate or pretenses above one's "station".
I thought we were a classless society?
How can a journalist be insubordinate or be pretending to a standing beyond his/her station in questioning ANY American, rich or poor, powerful or powerless, famous or unknown?
So the use of that word is highly offensive no matter how you take it, racist, or classist.

These people are despicable -- and transparent. It's only a matter of days before the right wing commentariat (Rush, Hannity, et al.) start sprinkling their shows with periodic "uppity" references that only become more and more prevalent as we move toward November. Sickening.
How do journalists sleep with themselves at night knowing that the elevate "stories" like "lipstick on a pig" and "elitist" while they ignore blatantly obvious racist code language?

Does anybody remember a memo or an article or something that karl rove wrote where he suggested that one way for the GOP to take on Obama is to use low level surrogates to directly inject race in the campaign and to see how far they could go with it?
I've been looking for it but can't find it.
Anyway, i might be paranoid, but this is the second time in a week that the word "uppity" has been used by a Republican and they both explained it away with that lame "websters defines uppity as" defense.
Could it be their softening us up on the idea??? or am i paranoid and seeing things that aren't there?

Makes sense. If the GOP neutralizes the word in the media with their faux indignation and pleas of innocence it will be like they have been given free reign to use the words "negro" or "nigger" without actually having to say them. I've never even lived in the south but whenever I hear the word "uppity" I expect one of those two words to follow.

Dem BillC,
I already said this to William, but here goes again on your fricking Palin lie:
Don't you guys ever READ? Here's the FULL quote:
"John McCain says he's about change, too," Obama said, leading into a string of ways he contends McCain represents more of the same -- economic policy, taxes, education, foreign policy, campaign tactics. "That's not change. That's just calling something that's the same thing something different.
"You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig," Obama went on, and the crowd erupted into shrieks, whoops and cheers. "You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change. It's still going to stink, after eight years. We've had enough of the same old thing."
NOW WHERE IS HE MENTIONING PALIN??? OR ANY WOMAN FOR THAT MATTER??
I know: you are just repeating junk the RNC put out in its little talking points, aren't you?
Did you know Obama used the same phrase talking about Petreaus and Bush?
"Reporters quickly unearthed evidence that Obama had said the same thing about Iraq policy, pointing to a reference the Illinois senator made last year: "George Bush has given a mission to General Petraeus, and he has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig."
and McSame, your hero, used the same phrase talking about Hillary's health care plan and Iraq?
"Later, it turned out that McCain himself used the phrase more than once, including last year, when he was talking about Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's 1990s health care plan.
He said last October, "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."
Speaking about opponents of President Bush's Iraq strategy last year, McCain criticized their reasoning.
"It gets down to whether you support what is being done in this new strategy or you don't," McCain said. "You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig, in my view."
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/09/palin_camp_takes_umbrage_at_li.html
So next time before you go calling names, why don't you do a little research.
