GOP House Candidate Calls Black Newscaster "Uppity"

It looks like more than one prominent Georgia Republican likes to use the word "uppity" in regards to prominent African-Americans -- this time, it's the GOP nominee in one of the few House seats that Dems could possibly lose this year.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Rick Goddard, a retired Air Force major general running against conservative Dem Congressman Jim Marshall, referred in a radio appearance to "a very uppity newscaster" who had a testy TV exchange with Newt Gingrich at the Republican Convention. This appeared to be a reference to MSNBC reporter Ron Allen, who is black.

The Goddard campaign didn't deny that he was discussing Ron Allen, telling the Journal-Constitution that Goddard "simply evoked a word -- that by definition -- described the reporter's demeanor as being superior, arrogant and presumptuous."

This comes after Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) told The Hill that he believed both Barack and Michelle Obama were "uppity," then denied that there was any racial connotation to the word.

That's sick. To think they're getting away with that shit, too. ... I need to go cool off. This stuff really makes me angry and upset.

In a just world... well, it doesn't matter.

Georgia Republicans: Racism is part of us.

Racism First.

user-pic

You mean Racism R Us!

Somebody need to go uppity side they heads,
tell ya what.

They're consciously trying to stretch the definition and usage of the word "uppity" out so that they can use it freely and in the open to discuss Obama. Next stop, Rush & Hannity. Every day.

They make me sick.

Maybe now the O campaign will come out swinging with some devastating attacks?? Hmm? Maybe?

Here's a Springsteen song ("American Land") to remind us that we're the melting pot, and stronger for it.

PS - F the GOP "leadership"!!

maybe just the proud announcement that dr ralph stanley endorsed barack obama for president of the united states? that would be nice.

I had that exact same response. I see fringe repubs using it publicly then a couple talking heads start the redefinition by defending the new use of "uppity" in the contexts defined by the fringe types. Pretty soon the right wing rehabilitates another one of the racial code words for use by the national right wing loonies(tm).

I guess they are trying to show (through repetition) that "uppity" isn't a bad word, doesn't have racist connotations unless you're a PC type.

At the same time, the expression "lipstick on a pig" is all of a sudden the most egregious sexist attacks ever launched.

Well I have to take back something I said today in caps even - Rove is working for the McLame campaign.

*sigh*

user-pic

Man oh man, these guys aren't even trying to hide it anymore. How long before they say the robes and hoods are just innocent fashion statements?

Sick.

The whole thing's gotten so weird, Phoebe, that I may just opt out of paying any attention.

[smiles ruefully]

Remember, the Southern version of the GOP is simply the old "Southern Caucus" of the Democratic Party pre-1964. Some things, unfortunately, haven't changed in the white power structure down there-they just switched parties.

That's what I've been saying. The Republican Party is made up of more than a few Dixiecrats. There motto was "White Supremacy," so It kills them to see a slave descendant exhibit an ounce of intelligence. Mutha'uckas.

I grew up in segregated times and in a segregated place. "Uppity" was mistly used in racial contexts I believe.

But even if that weren't true, it is still inappropriate to apply to any journalist.

Uppity as I remember it had connotations of insubordinate or pretenses above one's "station".

I thought we were a classless society?

How can a journalist be insubordinate or be pretending to a standing beyond his/her station in questioning ANY American, rich or poor, powerful or powerless, famous or unknown?

So the use of that word is highly offensive no matter how you take it, racist, or classist.

yes, i agree.
but i convert it into the bunny's clappity-clappity and it goes away for a while.
and besides, you must sometimes lance a boil.

New GOP just like the old GOP: Racist. Lipstick or not.

These people are despicable -- and transparent. It's only a matter of days before the right wing commentariat (Rush, Hannity, et al.) start sprinkling their shows with periodic "uppity" references that only become more and more prevalent as we move toward November. Sickening.

How do journalists sleep with themselves at night knowing that the elevate "stories" like "lipstick on a pig" and "elitist" while they ignore blatantly obvious racist code language?

Sarah Palin makes me shudder like a badly tuned diesel engine. Also, it seems as if it is a dark and stormy night...pigs are out wearing lipstick and old fish are wrapped up in the current events.

Don't "shudder"...spit. Contempt is the right reaction, not anxiety. In the same spirit of refusing to refer to dipshit adolescent republicans as "bullies"; in their schoolyard minds, that's what they'd like to be. Fuck them. They lack the physical courage to be bullies. They're merely assholes. Never lose sight of your superiority to them. Damn right I'm an elitist. Because I'm better than they are, and I fucking refuse to put up with their bullshit. Never express fear or anxiety about these loathsome scumbags. That's what they want.

user-pic

I hope the "uppity" black voters of Georgia give these doofi a slap upside the head and send them home.

Cripes. Is the new Republican mot juste?

I wonder how many times this word will be uttered on Rush Limbaugh's show between now and the election....hmmmmm?

LAWD, these people are creepy.

Jake Tapper on Nightline just called Palin "a mirror image" of Obama in terms of experience. Unbelievable.

(Telephone rings)...

(Dana Perino-esque Fembot voice answers): "Hello....You have reached the Republican Party, how can I help you?"

(Caller responds): "Yeah, uh, this is Satan, calling from Hell. I just wanted to say you guys are doing a great job down there."

user-pic

... a heckuva job!

A HELL of a job.

Does anybody remember a memo or an article or something that karl rove wrote where he suggested that one way for the GOP to take on Obama is to use low level surrogates to directly inject race in the campaign and to see how far they could go with it?

I've been looking for it but can't find it.

Anyway, i might be paranoid, but this is the second time in a week that the word "uppity" has been used by a Republican and they both explained it away with that lame "websters defines uppity as" defense.

Could it be their softening us up on the idea??? or am i paranoid and seeing things that aren't there?

Makes sense. If the GOP neutralizes the word in the media with their faux indignation and pleas of innocence it will be like they have been given free reign to use the words "negro" or "nigger" without actually having to say them. I've never even lived in the south but whenever I hear the word "uppity" I expect one of those two words to follow.

Continuing his rudeness to women, Obama today unmistakeably trashed Governor Palin in a boorish manner that should be offensive to everyone, without exception.Obama poked fun of Palin today.

“You can put lipstick on a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered. “It’s still a pig.”
“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”

So Oilbama the the most Sexist jerk in the history of politics calls Palin a Pig that smells like a Fish today and you want to talk about some guy no ones ever heard of calling a reporter "uppity"?

Oilbama reached lower heights today than even the day he voted for Dick Cheney's Energy Bill.

Oilbama is a Sexist Pig who smells like an Pigs ass.

DemBillC,

The comment was not about Palin. Please read something other than Republican talking points. The remark was made about McCain policy. Palin wasn't even mentioned in the speech for another several minutes. Please stop with the faux outrage. It demeans the process, and all of us.

Got lipstick?

You do realize that Senator McCain said the same thing about Hillary Clinton? There's a tape from October, 2007 where Senator McCain said the exact same words, and then laughed. So I guess you're willing to say the same about him?

user-pic

Get real Bill,

Obama was refering to McCain's newly minted change mantra. A 29 year Washington insider as an agent of change? That's what "putting lipstick on a pig" means.

Yeah I've never heard the term, "Lipstick on a pig." Except when McCain used it on Hillary. Or 200 years ago. If this is the best you have, then vote for the 'boorish' McCain, you ignorant slouch.

Dem BillC,

I already said this to William, but here goes again on your fricking Palin lie:

Don't you guys ever READ? Here's the FULL quote:

"John McCain says he's about change, too," Obama said, leading into a string of ways he contends McCain represents more of the same -- economic policy, taxes, education, foreign policy, campaign tactics. "That's not change. That's just calling something that's the same thing something different.

"You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig," Obama went on, and the crowd erupted into shrieks, whoops and cheers. "You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper and call it change. It's still going to stink, after eight years. We've had enough of the same old thing."

NOW WHERE IS HE MENTIONING PALIN??? OR ANY WOMAN FOR THAT MATTER??

I know: you are just repeating junk the RNC put out in its little talking points, aren't you?

Did you know Obama used the same phrase talking about Petreaus and Bush?

"Reporters quickly unearthed evidence that Obama had said the same thing about Iraq policy, pointing to a reference the Illinois senator made last year: "George Bush has given a mission to General Petraeus, and he has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig."

and McSame, your hero, used the same phrase talking about Hillary's health care plan and Iraq?

"Later, it turned out that McCain himself used the phrase more than once, including last year, when he was talking about Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's 1990s health care plan.

He said last October, "I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig."

Speaking about opponents of President Bush's Iraq strategy last year, McCain criticized their reasoning.

"It gets down to whether you support what is being done in this new strategy or you don't," McCain said. "You can put lipstick on a pig. It's still a pig, in my view."

So next time before you go calling names, why don't you do a little research.

well, i've heard the term lipstick on a pig for years, but you're the woman here, so i'll take your word that it's sexist. you're also the republican here, so i'll take your word that "uppity" isn't racist.

Just like Palin/McCain: it doesn't stop being a flat-out lie just because you say it over and over again.

Could I suggest "crackerty" as a retort?

Why isn't THIS being discussed in the MSM? This is DEPLORABLE and it should be shunned by ALL the news media.

Guys and gals, it may not really be my place to say it. But I will.
I'll restrain myself and not scream it out all in caps:
Please, please do what you must to save your republic, your democracy and your constitutional form of government.
If not for yourselves, for the rest of us.
I really fear this is your last chance.
We're pulling for you.
Some of us, even us agnostics and atheists, are praying for you.
It would be a terrible thing to waste the world's last best hope.
'Cause that's where we stand.

we hear you acanuck.

If we can keep the voting machines from flipping results we should be able to win this thing handily: 51% to 47.5% final margin.

user-pic

Don't take the bait, guys. This is exactly what they want -- a race about race. Ignore them.

So when they work their way up to telling us that "boy" isn't racially perjorative, can we take exception then, or do we have to wait until they've worked their way past "coon" and gotten "nigger" injected back into acceptable language for politicians to use in public?

user-pic

First, MCain said the exact thing earlier with respect to Hillary Clinton's health care position:

I'm sure you equally denounce that, and also denounce his chuckle when he took a questions that referred to Hillary as a "bitch" earlier this year, since you're such a fair, objective type.

Ummmm, it's the economy, stupid.

user-pic

These idiots are not doing themselves any favors. By using the passe word "uppity" they not only show themselves to be racists but old and out of touch racists. Not exactly the agents of change most people are looking for. I expect one of them to say Palin is the "bee's knees" next.

23 Skidoo!!

DemBillC....the McPALIN campaign isn't paying your stoopid arze enough .....you have posted that dopey comment on at least 10 blogs......it won't work no matter how many times you post it....

NBC/PMSNBC is in the tanl for b. Hussein Obama. Allen and the rest of the MSNBC crowd (except for Joe S and Pat B) are far left loonies and assholes.

Marginal Player, you are a horrid player. STFU.

user-pic

To think you once pretended to be a Hillary supporter.

I do believe Marginal Player accused me of being a troll before. It's funny how the real trolls are exposed once the dust settles.

Grampa Munster admitted on his interview on Face the Nation that the lack of diversity in the Republican party is going to kill it because simply being the party of white males won't cut it. These dinosaurs are more representative of the attitudes of a dying party and are not going to pretend to be politically correct. They'd rather expose themselves for the racists they (and their party) are as they go down. It looks like MP is onboard too.

Yup. America isn't getting "whiter"...and the growing minority groups look at that pathetic excuse of a convention last week for anyone who resembles them and they don't see it...

The Republican party is analogous to spent nuclear fuel rods: not radioactive enough to do actual work, but too radioactive to be disposed of safely.

Can we stop with this. I don't see anything racist about the term "uppity." I thought maybe it was just me, so I asked all my hipster friends what they thought, and it was 6-1 in agreement. There's legitimate shit to be talking about, like another outright lie from McCain in this new Sex-Ed ad, or whether the media is finally coming around to calling McCain/Palin out on these lies. We don't need to go around making up racism charges. Let's move on...

You have GOT to be kidding me? If you don't know the history of the word look it up or shut the hell up, with all due respect that is.

This ain't made up. Maybe you hang with a better class of folks than I grew up with. As has been said up-thread a couple times, almost always there's a racial component to the use of "uppity". If it's in reference to a black person it's 100% racial code. Whether the word nigg*r follows it or not it's directly implied.

Take my word for it. It was used by white folks against black folks in the South where I grew up and we had separate bathrooms, water fountains, schools, the whole bit.

To hear it again is like a bad dream returning.

Are you kidding? I am from the South....this word has real power. Racism is wrong should not be just dismissed.

user-pic

DR, how old are you and these hipster friends? Maybe if y'all are 20, I'll buy the ignorance.

But if you're 40 or over, you've either been living in a cave or you're a liar. There's no way anyone from my generation or older can not be aware of the racial connotations.

I do believe Marginal Player accused me of being a troll before. It's funny how the real trolls are exposed once the dust settles.

DRinOH,

For all their faux sophistication, your friends are dangerously ignorant of the world around them. For folks who look like me, being "uppity" was/is grounds for a lynching or some other form of retribution.

How long before they just say anything that crosses their small minds? They are trying to make it easier to send out the code words. That is what they are all about. How about other perjoritives like 'Sambo'? The repugs don't have a bottom to hit. They will just keep lowering the 'Political Correctness' bar until we return to the 'good old days' of raw racism and hate.

Don't let them continue. We must call them on their transgressions loudly and often. And never give up or accept defeat (which is what we should have learned from the repugs by now.

Still fighting the Civil War. Pathetic.

Until the Southern Whites are willing to burn the Confederate flag, this will always be an issue.

Something is hanging up. Or did I stutter?

to: Obama supporters,

Please call your local Obama headquarters and volunteer. I am a 56 year old female, I have never volunteered, but I am doing it now. This is a very important election and Republicans know how to win, by lying and not ignoring issues that matter to us....get out there and register new voters....PLEASE
