GOP Convention Audience Cheers For ... Hillary
This was a nightmarish image we'd anticipated, and it happened: The GOP convention crowd, which is made up of people who have spent much of their adult lives in the grip of profound Hillary hatred, suddenly were able to reach deep inside themselves and find the magnanimity to cheer for her.
The moment came, as expected, with the evocation of Hillary's criticism of Obama during the primary. Rudy Giuliani, the speaker, said:
Tough times require strong leadership, and this is no time for on the job training. It's about who can answer that crisis call at 3:00 in the morning -- yes, Hillary!
The crowd roared for what seemed like a solid half-minute.

This is surreal, and I'm not even watching it.
They roared for Hillary?

Greg, how can you say it's surreal, given the kind of campaign she ran during the Primaries (Wallce '68 redux)?
There was a time when Sen. Clinton might have been more of a bete noir to the right, but her excessive pandering to so-called Reagan Democrats this spring (the "hard working White Americans" bit) could naturally have won her a few hearts in Republican ranks.

Any way it goes ... that's SURREAL! Karl Rove's republicans cheering Hillary. The Palin nomination was almost worth it just for that.
Now, let's see if the heads deconstruct her nonsense.

Rudy is making me want to throw up. I know that we should "know thy enemy", but watching/listening to the RNC is tough to stomach. I'm just waiting to see Sarah in action.....

Rudy condems dems for not referring to 9/11 enough during the convention in Denver.
How many times is enough?

Not true at all, they did NOT cheer for Hillary, they cheered for the mockery of Hillary.
Giuliani said about the 3AM thing, that it was "ONE thing they could agree with Hillary on."
It was a mockery of her and the crowd cheered on. It was in NO way a compliment to her Greg, maybe you should rewind.
First thing I thought was, "well there goes trying to appeal to Hillary voters!"
September 3, 2008 10:26 PM | Reply | Permalink
That makes a little more sense. Thx.
But still, this just sounds like a surreal night.
I'd dearly love to know how independent voters, who haven't been deep in the weeds of campaign trivia, feel about tonight.

no, it was def cheering for Hillary -- because of her criticism of obama, and because the gop is reaching out to hillary voters.
September 3, 2008 10:41 PM | Reply | Permalink
No it absolutely was NOT.
They cheered when he dissed her saying that there was only ONE thing they agreed with her on.
How is that a cheer for her?
It was all about the 3AM.

I can't watch it, but hopefully Hillary will get out there and shut these people up. If I were her I would be so annoyed Palin is touting her image and using her lines, what shit.

Seriously. Where IS Hillary??
If I were her, I'd be raging at Palin and getting territorial on TV right now. Snowmobile Barbie can step the hell down.
I'd actually love to see a debate between Hillary and the so-called 'pitbull with lipstick' hockey mom. Palin would get owned.

Agreed and thank you for bringing it up. Next week, she needs to be out there in force and given Bill's speech last week, he does too.
Trying to be an educated voter, I watched tonite, but I have to tell you that the Mylanta is flowing right now.

I can't watch it. I cannot believe that after eight years of Captain Shit for Brains these jerk offs still have a chance. It's a cosmic joke. Unfortunately, the joke's on us.

I would love it if Rudy's showboating overshadowed Palin. Imagine the headlines... "Palin meets expectations, but Guiliani brings down the house." Followed by choice excerpts like "when the Democrats gave up on Iraq they gave up on America."

I believe the delegates on the floor have been instructed to cheer for any mention of Hillary. We know from campaign rallies that the line isn't working when Palin uses it - I think the delegates know it's coming and cheer their lungs out, and the drones in the audience follow their cue.

Jonze I believe you are exactly right about this. Very good observation.
September 3, 2008 10:47 PM | Reply | Permalink
You're right Olbermann read out on air last night that the floor are told when to cheer and for how long.
I thought the Democratic convention was OTT, but this superficial bullsh*t doesn't even compare.
Been thinking, I'm not worried about Palin per se, but I am a little worried about the American people -- will they use their brains [this time] when watching this? Republicans provide absolutely no substance -- all bluff and bluster. It seemed to work in 2000 and 2004, as far too many people were fooled -- will they make the same mistake again? I hope not.
What gives me some hope is when Hillary pulled a republican Palin regarding the irrational gas tax lie -- Obama made people think it through, so Hillary was made to look stupid, not the American people. I hope he can do it again.

I haven't said anything cranky about it, given the problems that TPM has been having, and the volume of complaints about said problems, but that ad is truly and deeply annoying.
It's the Rudy Giuliani of ads, in fact.

How come the cameras keep showing the handful of african-Americans that are at the rep. convention?
They certainly aren't representative. It's so funny. I can hear the director screaming: "Cut to the black guy, cut to the black guy." Pathetic

MSNBC pretty much focused on black women exclusively, when Michelle was giving her message. A subtle way of saying that her "real audience" is blacks.
As far as I was able to tell, they didn't show any white men during her speech.

That was during Michelle's speech.
I'm talking about during every speech at the rep. convention.

It's hard to watch--but it's all cognitive dissonance. If they truly believe the shit they blather, they are lost souls for whom reality is a vague and fleeting chimera. They live in a fantasy world of make-believe strawmen. I can truly see McCain dropping dead after a month and Palin inheriting the Oval office. If that happens just roll out the barrels of kool-aid laced with cyanide.

I felt like I was watching a Bund Rally. Pathetic and frightening. If McCain wins it might be time to consider leaving. More wars, more crazy Supreme Court nominees, more graft, greed and corruption, more Media control of the message and suppression of personal liberty.
Just like that coutry in Europe circa 1938.

Me too. There's something about Palin, that's disturbing. A fascist gleem in her eye.
By the way, when Sarah talks about getting rid of the governor's jet, how does she square that with the McCain's private jet?

The Republican party exists only to perpetuate itself. No twist of logic or moral acrobatics is too great for those people on the convention floor to make. If a Republican pol says it, it's the truth, it's smart, it's fair, it's the greatest thing ever. Hell, Palin's speech wasn't even that good; it was little more than name calling, but the Republican party faithful had decided it was going to be better than Obama's and dammit if they weren't going to do their part to make it seem that way.
Incidentally, that's why they govern so poorly. When you're only policy is beating the other guy any way you can, it makes it kinda difficult to have a coherent opinion on actual issues, nor is it easy to develop an internal reason for avoiding corruption.
