Flashback: McCain Ad Attacked Bridge To Nowhere And Earmark For Studying DNA Of Bears

Now that the news has broken that Sarah Palin requested an earmark for studying the DNA of harbor seals, it seems worth recalling this:

That's right: During the GOP primary, in the fall of last year, none other than John McCain ran an ad attacking both the Bridge to Nowhere, which Palin of course favored, and earmarks for studying the DNA of animals, which Palin requested. Now McCain is busy remaking Palin as the Joan of Arc of anti-earmarks warriors.

Thanks to TPM Reader SA for the find.

I really love HuffPo's headline today:

AS ROME BURNS...

McCain Camp Talks Lipstick, Pigs, Wolves, Moose, Fish, Snow Mobiling And Sex-Ed For Kindergartners

That pretty much says it all -

I'm blown away that the sex ed thing isn't a bigger deal.

It has to be one of the nastiest ads in the history of US political ads, and everybody keeps talking about lip stick. What the hell?

I still think the idea of a counter ad (put out by a 527) stating that McCain is pro pedophilia and asking how much money McCain recieves from NAMBLA is in order.

I think Palin should have been studying the mating habits of teens instead of requesting $ to study the mating habits of crabs.

It's refreshing to see on CNN's frontpage this under popular news: "Judge warned Palin in 2005 to back off brother-in-law's job"

And under the politics section, this is the top story: "McCain criticized Wasilla earmakrs in 2001"

Actual journalism. Shocking.

user-pic

I know.

I've been thanking the Little Baby Jebus for a couple of days.

I'm convinced - nobody pays any attention to me - but I am utterly convinced that serious people on both sides of the political spectrum are just as horrified at the idea of Sarah Palin being one heartbeat away from being CIC as we are.

I honestly believe that and I do not think she's going to win this election for McCain. No way, no how, not happening.

I believe that fully.

user-pic

It's encouraging. And it's about time.

Maybe someday we can trust bust our media, but for now it's nice to see someone actually doing more than repeating campaign media releases.

test

what are you guys experiencing with comments?

Slow for me. But no error messages.

Can you please let us in on what's going on?!

user-pic

we're overhauling our servers, very soon, sit tight

Thanks, Greg. Can't wait.

Now that is good news. Thanks!

Slow, but posting. No errors and I don't have to open 5 pages while I'm waiting -=

More errors, in my experience, over on the right side of the page.

Great Bloomberg article on Palin's ethics issues. Some of it is stuff I hadn't heard before (the state job for an investment partner):

One of these seals didn't happen to have a yellow ribbon on it, perchance? I let it into the sea after accidentally giving it the taste for mammal blood.

Yes, but will the MSM care? My guess is "no". It's all well and good to find and post these things, but if the MSM ignores it, what difference does it make. McCain produces some horrendously awful attack ad, that's never meant to be aired, and the MSM is all over it, but unfortunately these sort of videos rarely make their way to the evening news cycle.

user-pic

O give it a rest with this bullshit. Where have you been for the past two days?

The MSM is all over the lies and the bullshit from her - every major news outlet is on the story - how can you claim they don't care?

Jesus!

Take a breath Tena. I'm a regular watcher of cable news and, while some of these issues have been discussed, it would be nice to see more aggressive Obama surrogates out there. What I've noticed is what Josh pointed out earlier in a post. The MSM talking-heads will point to some of these things and then still go in to denial about it and treat McCain with reverence. If the Obama camp is planning on the news hosts to challenge McCain/Palin they are sorely mistaken. They need to have much more aggressive pundits out there hammering these points home.

Yes, like Chris Matthews, whom I like and think is very objective; even though we know he's a Democrat and supports Barack, saying that he doesn't think McLame approved the lipstick ad. The next thing he will be saying is that McLame didn't approve the sex education ad. As the saying goes "denial" is not only a river in Egypt.

I don't know why Josh and David don't acknowledge this, but "McCain must not have known about this ad" is a strategy that people like Carville use to undermine Republican attacks.

It's a way of getting at people who have already decided they like McCain. You don't have to confront them directly with their error -- if you did, they'd just ignore you. Instead you get them thinking by saying, "Huh, I can't figure why an honorable man like McCain would do something dishonorable like this . . ."

Ever read Julius Caesar?

Brutus was an honorable man. So were they all. All, honorable men. And by saying that Antony pushed them, gently, into their graves.

user-pic

O come on - tell me to take a breath -

You were whining about the MSM and like I told you, they are on top of it.

For five and a half years, John McCain couldn't even think about sacrificing all the principles he once believed in for political gain. To imply that John McCain, a former prisoner of war, would engage in a three-ring circus of lying, smearing, and audacious hypocrisy is reprehensible and belittles the great service of our men and women in uniform.

You reap what you sow....

McShame was against tax cuts before he was for them. Palin was for the bridge before she was against it. McShame was against earmarks before he chose the country's number one earmarker. Palin was for earmarks before she was against them. McShame was against the religious right before he was for them. McShame was against drilling before he was for it. McShame was against Swift-boating before he took it to new lows. McShame was for straight talk before he started lying.

These people should have ZERO credibility with anyone.

They are living, breathing caricatures of cynical, immoral, shameless, unprincipled lying hacks.

So attack, Obama, attack!

I love the smell of hypocrisy in the morning. Obama and his surrogates need to hammer away with this.

Pufferfish

So many of us do not have enough to put our children through college.
So many of us do not have enough to pay our bills.
So many of us do not have enough for gas.
So many of us do not have enough for health care.
So many of us do not have enough to pay our mortgage.
So many of us do not have enough.

But there is something we have had enough of.
Enough of Bush.
Enough of McCain.

Enough is Enough.

O/T: I'm really liking those OH and PA polls. If Obama can maintain those kinds of numbers things will be sweet come November.

It seems the server ate a comment I made a while ago. Even though I was automatically logged in it wanted me to log in again and didn't like my correct password. Seems to be working now when I signed in again.

I live in Washington State and many of us take the "Bridge to Nowhere" very personally. Palin took the money even after the bridge idea failed. In Washington state the residents in Western Washington are footing the bill for a new TOLL bridge without any federal funding at all. This bridge connects the Washington mainland to the Olympic Peninsula where the Bangor Nuclear Submarine Base is located and the Bremerton Naval Shipyard, two important federal military installations. Yet the residents in one county of the state get to pay for the lions share of the entire bridge (one of the longest spans in the nation). You could argue that access to these installations is a national security issue. However, Washington State was not able to secure any federal help for this project. Perhaps it is because we have a Democratic Governor, two Democratic Senators and two Democratic Congressmen in the district where the Bridge was built.

She's going to zero out all those requests, right? (I kid, I kid, of course she won't).

Will the McCain camp be running ads against its own VP candidate's Seal DNA request?

Is this some sort of Orwellian doublespeak that Ear Marks are OK if You're a Maverick (EMAOKIYAM)?

ROTFL!! They really did not think this VP pick through. I just hope the mess resonates with voters... irrespective of the kinds of lame excuses the media is making for McCain.

McCain has approved bills that contain 12,673 earmarks in the last 6 years including the bear DNA earmark he rail against.Arizona ranks 12 out of 50 in the amount of government appropriation and government contracts.Fact check states that McCain writes letters to the President of the time to get money for his state projects. If that does not work fellow Senator Kyle put the earmark in a bill. All non partisan groups that look at earmark state that McCain does indeed request earmarks.
