Election Central Morning Roundup

McCain Campaign Orders Palin To Sedona For Debate-Cramming
The Wall St. Journal reports that Sarah Palin will be headed to John McCain's Sedona ranch this week for a few days of intensive debate preparation, in the wake of her problematic interview with Katie Couric. In particular, a McCain adviser said the goal will be for her debate answers to be "her words," and not campaign talking points that she's had trouble reciting properly.

Obama In Colorado, Biden Off The Trail
Barack Obama is campaigning in the key swing state of Colorado today, with a campaign event scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET in Denver. Joe Biden does not have any public events.

McCain And Palin In Ohio
John McCain and Sarah Palin are holding another one of their joint rallies today, scheduled for 12 p.m. ET in Columbus, Ohio.

Biden Prepping For Debate
Joe Biden is reportedly receiving advice from Hillary Clinton and Dianne Feinstein for his upcoming debate with Sarah Palin, presumably on how to carry himself while debating a female politician. Some Dems are worried that if Biden goes after Palin too aggressively, he could come off as a bully picking on a female candidate.

Former McCain Campaign Manager: He Needs to Be Less Dramatic
Former McCain campaign manager John Weaver told the Los Angeles Times that McCain's reaction to the financial crisis may have backfired. "It was all very dramatic, but maybe the American public is tired of drama after the last eight years," said Weaver. "John needs to demonstrate he has a steady hand. He needs to be a bit more measured."

NYT: Pro-Obama Unions Encountering Race As An Obstacle
The New York Times reports that while unions canvassing for Barack Obama have had some success with economic issues, racism is still a problem. "I think race is playing a major part," said a painters' union activist in Wisconsin. "I think that's why some people say, 'Isn't he a Muslim?'"

Eric: You entered the wrong numbers for the Research 2000 Tracking Poll. It's Obama (51-42), not (41-42) as you currently have it.

user-pic

You might want to fix the R2K result on the poll tracker...

No kidding. He about gave me a heart attack.

... a McCain adviser said the goal will be for her debate answers to be "her words," and not campaign talking points that she's had trouble reciting properly.

This should be hilarious.

Biden should prepare by practicing appropriate responses to the most ludicrous non sequiturs his debate prep can come up with.

Personally I think they are trying their best to lower expectations as best they can. Anything short of her running off stage in tears, they are going to claim as victory and the traditional media is going to eat it up.

There might be some in the MSM that will play this "she exceeded expectations," but after the Couric interview, the expectations is not about whether she can prove she is "good debater" or not, but whether she is can prove that she is, in the words of the conservative commentator, "in over her head." There is a thing as having set the bar too low.

Yes, the "soft bigotry of low expectations", indeed.

Hoist by their own petard, you might say.

user-pic

Talking-points challenged?  That's not ready-from-day-one-ness we can believe in!

Yeah, but imagine if she stubs her toe and stumbles on that bar! What a disaster!

I don't know if anybody has noted, but Joe Biden is an intimidating figure. Long time senator, presidential candidate in his own right, distinguished looking, confident, and able to give em hell. If I was up against him, I would sure as hell be nervous, can't imagine what the Palintoligist is feeling like...

I actually think if she does this that she will effectively hold the base, which is got to be their goal right now. This might even make her appear more "normal" to on-the-fence independents, but even still, her debate performance will be compared to clips from the Couric interview, which means that her verbal incompetence will remain part of the narrative.

Biden should talk with her, but almost 100% ignore her points. He should stay focused on McCain, just as she will likely focus on Obama. If he does that, he'll be fine.

We should expect a lot of Yas and You betchas.

user-pic

You betcha!

Can't forget those pesty "we can play stump the candidate" BS.

What a lame way out of a question...

user-pic

You betcha!

user-pic

Could she please recite some bible verses for us?

I'd love to hear her rendition of well-known bible phrases that her behavior seems to contradict!

Er... maybe she could just put the bible into her own words... for the fundies.... that might help!

I saw the R2K poll as listed, and I laughed and laughed.

How bad a day would Obama have had to have for that to happen? (well, obviously somewhere around the 20% mark)

Palin must be exposed for the complete dolt she is. Lets not criticize Biden for doing that he should be applauded.

I am sure we can all agree if Palin gets elected we don’t want to look back and say Biden should have been a lot tougher. This is the big leagues if Palin can’t take the heat its just proof once again that Palin is totally unqualified

Just a thought,,,,,,,,,, perhaps Biden should do the debate in drag,,,,, Hillary and Finestein can coach him. Be a fun way to diminish the condescending and/or arrogant spin.

The look on Gwen Ifill's face would be a keeper as well.

user-pic

If Biden was to debate in drag, it would signal that the Obama campaign is every bit as serious as the McCain campaign.

user-pic

We've got No Drama Obama and the Republicans have nominated Norma Desmond!

The perception of John McCain as a drama queen is increasingly crystalizing within the electorate.

user-pic

I did my part... even though they criticized me for using the word "Queen" in front of Drama - but yes, he's emasculated himself and become a Drama Queen.

And the citizenry is "tired of drama" - well that's an understatement which could fill the Grand Canyon at this point!

Go NO DRAMA!

Incidentally, we should all invest in a couple of pink dice with the names Sarah and John.... they'll make nice "party favors" for die-hard repubs.

"In particular, a McCain adviser said the goal will be for her debate answers to be 'her words', and not campaign talking points that she's had trouble reciting properly."

that an advisor said this is both telling about the problem they face and amusing if one imagines the scene out there in Sedona over the next few days ...

my guess is, if she's had problems reciting talking points, she'll really be at sea speaking in her own words, because she's put in a total of something like 17 hours thinking about national and international issues since being picked as VP nominee. We should expect some amazing stuff to come out of her mouth on Thursday. (I bet it shows up on Saturday's SNL!)

For those who didn't see Saturday Night Live, with Tina Fey reprising her dead-on Sarah Palin impersonation:

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/couric-palin-open/704042/

The most ridiculous thing about this is she used her EXACT words. Check out the answer to the bailout. Its word for word - her real answer.

If thats not the pinnacle of mockery - I don't know what is.

Some Dems are worried that if Biden goes after Palin too aggressively, he could come off as a bully picking on a female candidate.

I think the answer is simple. Biden aims all his fire on the unhinged, batshit crazy McShame and basically ignores Palin. Of course, he should call her out if when she lies about Obama or about her own record, but otherwise, just remind people how dangerous it would be to have an impulsive, unstable lunatic as president and how good it will be to have a calm, intelligent grown-up in the White House, for a change.

I think that's the only approach Biden can take at this point. We don't need a game changer from Biden.

Nope. Just a -- hopefully, God-willing -- gaffe-free performance.

If and when Palin says something incomprehensibly stupid, Biden should ignore it. Let her sink herself. She won't need any help from him to do it. Instead, just focus his fire on McShame.

I fully agree. He should barely address Palin. He DOES have to act like she exists though but once acknowleding her he can go into his rant on McCain. Never attack her directly, you can have freedom to do it against McCain though.

No! MORE dramatic! MORE! Plus a temper tantrum!!

After the last couple of months, you have to know more drama is coming. I think it's Cindy McCain snapping and attacking Palin.

"Ready"

John McCain chose the woman below as his Vice Presidential candidate.

He is 72 years old. He has been treated for a very serious illness. Four times.

He says that Sarah Palin is "ready to be President."

We are currently in what may be the most serious economic crisis in American history.

COURIC: Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?

PALIN: That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the—it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.

Read the above again.

Carefully.

Palin will no doubt be prepared with crisp, coherent responses for Thursday's debate. However, the above indicates that this is not a mind that is prepared with the breadth and depth of understanding and knowledge to take on the duties of the President of the United States at a time of financial crisis.

Unlike others, you do not need to act on impulse.

For your country and future.

Think.

Can you please recognize this is the "comment" section and not the"my-blog-post-of-the-day" section. It is annoying as hell. Post a snippet, thoughtful comment, or anything, just not your whole post, buddy.

I hope that they're not advising Biden to not challenge Palin at all. She's becoming a national joke, but not everyone out there is in on the joke yet. Right now, the only thing she's practicing is attack lines against Barack Obama. She's learning them by heart, and you can bet money that lots of them will be way below the belt. Religion, abortion, patriotism, hell maybe even drugs. She's going to try to derail this debate and turn it into the Attack Barack Hour.

Her only real value at this point to McCain is as rabid attackdog, with the hope that Democrats are afraid to touch her. I really want Biden to not fall into that trap. Everyone in the country knows that she shouldn't even be on the same stage as Biden, but he needs to keep her from becoming a one-woman Swiftboating operation. To do that, he'll need to know when and how to attack her own credibility.

I agree. It would be a respect to treat her entirely with kid gloves. He needs to land some punches, but do it politely and without the "McCain Sneer."

Make that: "It would be a MISTAKE . . ."

From your keyboard to McCain's monitor. (Oops, I forgot that he doesn't do the internet.) The only hope they've got is to have Palin spend the entire time attacking Obama and hope that it puts Biden on the offensive. She can't think on her feet, she can't synthesize new information. This is the only thing they've got that can keep her on a script.

BTW, you forgot Barack's support of infanticide.

She's learning them by heart, and you can bet money that lots of them will be way below the belt. Religion, abortion, patriotism, hell maybe even drugs. She's going to try to derail this debate and turn it into the Attack Barack Hour.

puts Biden on the defensive, d'oh...

I think the other trap, though, is to ensnare Biden into addressing small, petty issues. When McCain went negative in the debate, it didn't go well. I think it will be disastrous for Palin to go negative, because the vast majority of Americans don't think she's earned it, and they won't believe she knows what she's talking about. If she wants to go on character attacks, I think Biden should stick to issues and policy. Getting in there with her about flag pins, patriotism, religion, et al, plays against Biden's strengths and will make him more prone to silly errors. Independents are loving the level-headedness and thoughtfulness of the Obama campaign. Biden should stay in line with that, and attack McCain on policy (but should definitely refrain from talking about McCain as a friend).

I can't imagine any analyst claiming that Biden "disrespected" Palin if he refused to engage with her on petty issues. If he stays above board and makes an effective case for Obama and an effective case against McCain, he will "win" the debate handily.

Palin's extremist jingoism might shore up the base, but it will fall flat on independents, as we saw from Friday night's debates.

Good idea. Very much like Obama did in the ridiculous ABC debate. Dismiss the attacks as "not what the American people are interested in" and stick to the issues.

He should acknowledge McCain as his friend, it's the "happy warrior" ploy and it ALWAYS works.

I expect they will have Biden talk exclusively about the Bush/McCain domestic-foreign policy disasters. And the format limits direct interaction between the two.

Fareed Zakaria hasn't been a big fan of McCain's to begin with, and has been very complementary of Obama even during the primaries. I love reading his columns as much as the next person, but that he wrote that isn't much of a surprise at all, and certainly not as much of one as the column by that conservative commentator.

It still adds to the meme that she's a net liability to the McShame campaign and makes her candidacy a continuing unwelcome issue for them.

Eric it is not 41-42....it IS 51-42
We know you still have hope Hillary will take over for Obama...but here is clue..NO FRIGGIN WAY!

Anyone taking odds on whether Palin resigns from the ticket before the debate? If it's going to happen, it has to be before Thursday.

Won't happen. That would require McCain admitting that he made a fatal mistake with his first presidential decision. Do you really think he will be willing to admit that he made a mistake? I don't see it happening.

He wouldn't have to admit to any mistake if there's a convenient excuse is engineered whereby Palin herself withdraws from the ticket.

He wouldn't have to admit to any mistake if a convenient excuse is engineered whereby Palin herself withdraws from the ticket.

Right. That's how K-Lo put it. She would just say she misunderestimated how hard it would be to run for veep and take care of a down's syndrome infant.

Yeah, everyone would so totally buy that.

And that would lose them the only demographic that Palin brought on board: freakazoid repug women who resented any implication that a mother can't handle being VP.

Intrade pegs it currently (as I write this) at an 8.1% chance. Seems a little high to me.

Reeps are stubborn, and withdrawing Sarah would be admitting a mistake. Why do that when keeping her on, even if it means losing, allows you to later blame somebody else for your problems?

You may be right. I go back and forth on this.

If they really have no confidence in her, I think they'd figure out a way to get her to withdraw claiming family responsibilities.

On the other hand, I actually think she'll do better in a debate than she did with Katie Couric. Unlike a one-on-one interview where you can be asked for specifics and pressed, in a debate, there's plenty of time for filibusters and bromides, there are fewer interruptions, and it's much easier to avoid answering. Plus I don't think Biden will press her the way an interviewer did. My guess is that, to my ears, she'll still reveal herself to be the moron she is, but it may be less evident to the easily-intimidated MSM and they'll certainly hype the "beat-expectations" game.

I think you are absolutely right on this. I fully expect the media to embrace her performance. But I don't think the Couric interview will ever fully go away, either. Even if she does fairly well, I have a hard time seeing her providing real specifics, which is what she needs to do at this point to secure anyone but the base.

Last comment in that thread urges "pink dice with photos of candidates" to pass out at "events."

Let's see -- we've got John Weaver saying that McCain needs to chill out and be less dramatic. Then we've got Bill Kristol in today's NY Times saying that McCain can only win if he becomes much more dramatic. Ouch - my poor head!

I'm pretty sure at this point that Kristol is just an anarchist pretending to be a Republican. It wouldn't surprise me if Fox has footage stored away somewhere of Kristol leading the riots out there in Minneapolis during the RNC convention encouraging people to bust windows and overturn cars.

If it's chaotic and has anything to do with the Republican party, Kristol is a HUGE fan.

How about Biden use Tina Fey as a sparring partner?

How about McCain replace Palin with Tina Fey? It gets rid of Palin, but no one will notice the difference, and you get an amazingly smart, sharp person on the ticket to boot!

She's been to more foreign countries, too.

I think it's more accurate to say that McCain's residence in Sedona is not a ranch - there's no cattle or brush-clearing operations there - but rather a chalet.

Please update the post to reflect this reality. Thanks!

The ranch is also a luxurious "jail" where she'll be completely sequestered from any of those pesky people poking a microphone in front of her face. Don't want any more of those McCain/Palin contradictions like her most recent Pakistan gaffe.

Biden's biggest challenge in the debate will come immediately after Palin answers the first question Ifil poses. As the camera moves from Palin to Biden he must not be laughing.

Easy to avoid this. Just make sure Biden knows that if he loses, Palin will be vice-president to John McCain.

He won't be laughing when she says something stupid then.

Next stunt: Bill Clinton's face is cloned. McCain replaces own face with cloned Big Dog. McDog divorces Cindy and marries Palin.

They run on the "Iditarod to the White House - God, Guns and Girls" ticket.

Nobody noticed that in the debate, McCain referred to the Bin Laden led Mujahadeen as 'Freedom Fighters'

Read About it Here
http://www.newsone.com/elections/article/mccain-called-bin-laden-a-freedom-fighters

That's when Bin Laden and his compatriots were fighting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, with generous CIA support. Right?

Moose49 wrote: "Biden aims all his fire on the unhinged, batshit crazy McShame and basically ignores Palin"

I think this is right.

Biden should be polite, gracious and respectful towards Sarah Palin -- and otherwise pretty much ignore her, while relentlessly attacking McCain.

Biden should emphasize that the important question is not whether Sarah Palin is qualified to be vice president but whether John McCain is qualified to be president, and that McCain's record of consistently supporting disastrous Bush policies, his poor judgment, his reckless erratic behavior, and his deep ties to the corrupt corporate lobbyists who run his campaign, all show that the answer to that question is a resounding NO.

I doubt that Biden will have to do very much to demonstrate to the American people that Sarah Palin is hideously unqualified for national office. She will take care of that herself.

On the other hand, Sarah Palin's record in public office -- a record of mismanagement, negligence, incompetence, fiscal irresponsibility, dishonesty, cronyism, ideological extremism, divisiveness, and vindictive abuse of power -- is fair game, particularly if Biden is able to point out that those are the very qualities of the Bush administration that have created the profound problems the country faces today.

user-pic

WSJ: "For his part, Mr. Palin has worried about the frequent separation of his wife from her family, friends and Alaska staff, an adviser said. Accordingly, her family will be with her in Sedona during this week."

First, why is the spouse of the vp nominee interfering with her campaign schedule - especially just a few weeks after she was picked?

Second, do the Palins understand that if she becomes President she's not going to have a lot of free time to hang out with the fam? Were they aware of that before they "unanimously" agreed to her running for vp? Or are they all complete dolts?

Watch for hubby's concerns to become the precursor of an engineered family situation that requires Palin to resign from the ticket.

By all accounts, Todd Palin actively participates in his wife's gubernatorial administration, and my guess is that he wants to be in Sedona as her consigliere. This guy is creepy.

Absolutely true, Doofus. Todd has aspirations too. But I'm just wondering whether Todd is being used as a foil in this evolving drama. Make him part of the reason why Palin must withdraw -- hence the WSJ reference to Todd's concerns.

Interesting conjecture. The "spending more time with my family" excuse seems the most likely -- and plausible, given the many issues in that family -- if she is to withdraw.

They all want to be together - in case of the Rapture.

Rapture Readiness!

I hear that Palin was in tears as Debate Camp because she said she was led to believe that there would be s'mores.

And the First Dud was hoping she would make him a lanyard for his snow machine keys.

It's going to be a disappointing week for the Palins.

PEACE

My $.02 (they're probably worth less than that, actually):

I think Biden should start all of his responses with "you're smarter than that, Governor" and then go though what she doesn't know. It avoids the perception of being condescending while at the same time point out the substance that she's lacking.

A line I would like to hear in the debate-

Gov. Palin wasn't against the bridge to nowhere. She was just against paying for it.

I know it is better to focus on McCain but if the bridge comes up I like this line.

I think a big problem with Palin that's overlooked is she's probably much more comfortable being in charge and in the #1 spot. There's a huge difference with being the #2 person and having to echo policies and follow orders. Remember she was very unhappy while in the Oil&Gas commission and ended up stabbing the repubs in the back to get out of that role. Personality-wise, she's just not someone suited for a VP role, ignoring all her other flaws. I think that's why she's doing so badly when she doesn't have a teleprompter to tell her what to say.

user-pic

GAMBLERS FOR mcCain is placing bets on how many questions she can actually answer. In case you miss the founding of this important group, click here:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/gamblers-for-mccain.php

According to HuffPo, the campaign is now pushing Palin out in front of the cameras and will do more interviews. Maybe they are just getting her comfortable for the debate, or maybe they realize her negatives are so low with them hiding her and thus putting so much focus on the interviews she does do that it's better off if she is over-exposed to the point folks just get used to her.

Also it seems like she is going to attack Biden and try to get him riled up to fire back at her, to which the Republicans can play the sexism victim card.

A McCain surrogate was on Fox this morning saying Gwen Ifill will have "a lot to answer for" if she asks too many foreign policy questions. Threatening the moderator is always a good tactic.

Trying to play the refs hmmmm. Don't think Ifill will be to scared of those threats.
