Election Central Morning Roundup
MoveOn Ad Blames McCain's "Friends" For Economic Crisis
In a sign that this campaign is certainly not being put on hold as John McCain would like, MoveOn has this funny new one-minute ad on national cable, casting the blame for the market crisis squarely on John McCain and those folks he'd call "my friends" for the economic crisis -- folks like Phil Gramm, Rick Davis and George W. Bush:
"Main St. giving Wall St. $700 billion and getting nothing in return -- it's outrageous!" the announcer says. "Americans shouldn't have to foot the bill for a mistake that John McCain and his friends made."
Another Poll Gives Obama Huge Lead On The Economy
The new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll puts in perspective just how precarious the economic situation is for John McCain, with Barack Obama being trusted more on the economy by a 46%-32% margin. Overall, Obama leads 49%-45% in the horse race, with a ±3% margin of error -- meaning it is quite likely that the economy is what is making the difference and putting Obama ahead at this point.
Obama And McCain To Address Clinton Global Initiative
Both Barack Obama and John McCain will be addressing the Clinton Global initiative this morning, Bill Clinton's humanitarian organization, before heading back to Washington for the bipartisan meeting with President Bush to attempt to resolve the financial crisis. McCain is addressing the Initiative in person in New York, while Obama is appearing via satellite from Florida.
Joe Biden Still On The Trail
Joe Biden is in Pennsylvania today, defying the McCain campaign's request that he and Barack Obama stop campaigning. Biden has an event at 10:30 a.m. ET in Greensburg, and another at 2:30 p.m. ET in Wilkes-Barre.
Poll: Obama Edges McCain In North Carolina
In another very bad poll number for John McCain, a new Rasmussen poll gives Barack Obama a narrow lead in North Carolina, a Republican-leaning Southern state that hasn't voted Dem president since 1976. The numbers: Obama 49%, McCain 47%, within the ±4.5% margin of error.
Poll: Obama Up By Six In Wisconsin
A new Research 2000 poll in Wisconsin gives Barack Obama a healthy lead of 49%-43% in this swing state, with a ±4% margin of error. Wisconsin voted for both Al Gore and John Kerry, but only by extremely narrow margins, and it is perennially on the GOP's target list.
Huckabee Comes Out Against Bailout
In a display of grassroots GOP opposition to the proposed Wall St. bailout, Mike Huckabee has sent out a scathing e-mail to his supporter list, opposing the bailout and the leaders who are pushing it: "Frankly, I'm disappointed and disgusted with my own Republican party as I watch them attempt to strong-arm a bailout of some of America's biggest corporations by asking the taxpayers to suck up the staggering results of the hubris, greed, and arrogance of those who sought to make a quick buck by throwing the dice."
Right-Wing Pastors To Challenge Tax Laws, Endorse Candidates This Sunday
A coalition of right-wing churches is stepping up its challenge to the ban on tax-exempt churches endorsing political candidates, with pastors in 22 states set to give political sermons this Sunday. "I'm going to talk about the un-biblical stands that Barack Obama takes. Nobody who follows the Bible can vote for him," said Rev. Wiley S. Drake of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, California.

A couple of weeks ago I joked that Intrade should open a line on when McCain would have a public meltdown. I didn't think it would be this soon, but I have the feeling he's right on the edge. A little more mocking disdain by his base and more bad polls like the North Carolina poll and I think Mount McCain is going to erupt.

Oh please, oh please, oh please....
I'm personally hoping McCain sees that clip of him getting dusted with foundation at Katie Couric's desk, the feed Letterman showed live on his own show -- so sweet! -- and blows that gasket...

Time out. Hold it. Yesterday, with great fanfare, John McCain announced he was suspending his campaign to rush back to Washington. The economy had to be saved and only he could save it. Now it turns out he isn't going to Washington until this afternoon. He has to stop at Clinton's global initiative before saving the world.
His schedule puts the lie to McCain's claim that he is putting country first by suspending his campaign. I wonder if anybody except David Letterman will notice.

The suspension doesn't kick in until AFTER he addresses the Clinton Global Initiative. I still want some enterprising reporter to ask him why the CGI is more important than the presidential debate.

Exactly.
You know, I was lying there this morning thinking about this and I realized - you don't piss off Dave Letterman and live to tell about it.
Dave is a hell of a nice guy apparently - he paid his writers while they were on strike, he supported Warren Zevon when Warren was dying of cancer - he's a hell of a nice guy. But my god - pissing him off is really stupid if you are running some kind of popularity contest - which the election is to a certain extent.

As a therapist, it was fascinating watching the guy, struggling... to come to terms with what had happened... as his mind clicked through the options and settled itself into a groove.
September 25, 2008 9:41 AM | Reply | Permalink
The Letterman rant hurts McCain because Dave has gone out of his way to cite McCain's "heroism."
Then comes Dave's "not-the-John-McCain-I-know" disclaimer on the candidate's decision to cut and run from the campaign trail and the presidential debate.
Plus he got in some digs about Palin ducking the press and being a not-ready-for-prime-time lightweight.
Yep, it ain't smart to piss Dave off. We haven't heard the end of it. Heheh.

Last night, Letterman was raking McCain over the coals without the benefit of his writer.
Just imagine what tonight will be like!
Dave can hold a grudge for a long, long time, and he has a huge audience. Just ask Oprah!

You know he did worse than just piss him off. He publicly *dissed* him. Not sure what the consequences of that will be for McCain, but it's one more instance where he comes off just looking like an asshole - publicly - without anyone having to say so.

I was thinking that Letterman is a nice guy, but that all comedians seem to have the boiling...you know...anger beneath the surface. It's what makes them edgy and sometimes funnier. Letterman has always had that, though it was especially noticeable on his earlier shows, back in the day.
Guys like that are funny, but also have big egos, and are quite insecure, no matter how much success they find.
And you don't do anything to piss them off. They have a big stage and they aren't afraid to use it.
I was also surprised at just how LONG Dave went on about McCain. You could really see his brain working the entire time.

This election cycle continues to amaze me. From a sports fan point of view the ups and downs and twists and turns have had more drama than any game I have ever seen.
Recently this has all come from crazy (or crazy like a fox) Johnny Mac. I keep thinking about him as a craps player and he just keeps rolling the dice. He must be thinking that if he can just hit one big number he will get back in the game.
Poker player Big O will just keep playing his cards right and Johhny Mac is about to crap out.

Tweety made a comment last night that surprised me for it's lack of guile.
He said that when one party screws up, the voters throw them out and elect the other party, and that that principle is "...true north on the political compass", but every time the needle starts to point that way McCain jumps in shakes up the compass because McCain "...doesn't want the voters to go there".
Very insightful and honest, I thought.

Just thinking that the sentiment expressed by Huckabee amongst the right wing might end up causing a number of them staying home in November if they see McCain at all tied to this bailout. Worth a percentage point or two in a swing state like VA, FL, or NC (wow, it is pretty wild that this state is in play) could be enough to throw them to Obama.

While waiting for Campbell Brown to come on last night, I caught the last few minutes of Lou Dobbs. He and his blowhard buddies were adamantly against anything resembling a bailout. People forget that this is the 2nd time McCain has pulled this stunt in a month. Remember suspending the campaign and convention for Hurricane Gustav? How many timeouts does he think he has? Why do I get the same feeling from him as I do with a panicked NFL coach who uses all his timeouts in the 3rd quarter and then when he really needs it in the final two minutes, doesn't have any.
Time for the Hail Mary.

That Letterman video - or a cut version of it - will be circulating for the next 40 days and more.
mcShame caught in a lie. Mocked. Mocked for himself and for his running mate.
There is something about that video... the impromptu truths bubbling out of Letterman's mouth.
So many people will view that. It's going to be devastating in its effect on common people, the uninformed in particular.
mcShame's behavior has an air of desperation about it, an unhinged quality, vicious, unpresidential to the hilt. The man is completely unfit for office. His "second" unfit as well.
No pundit could duplicate the shock and awe unfolding within Letterman - as he struggled to connect the dots between the myth and the man - and COULD NOT do so. Put that together with the Enquirer article (and it's effect on the uniformed!). Put that together with the video of the exorcism of Palin. It's overkill. It will not play in small town and rural America.
The mcShame campaign is done for. Does anyone imagine the Couric interview will not be preceded (or followed) by the clip of Letterman?
Try to spin this any way you can. But it will not work.
mcShame has shamed himself and the nation. There will be hell to pay!

We live a pop culture, and many of those who haven't already decided who to vote for are greatly effected by things like what happened on David Letterman. And it wasn't one thing. They are in violation of the constitution - it's just simple. They don't like the constitution - tough fucking titties.

OH!
What got me so fucking pissed while listening to them yesterday on NPR was how they said they'd sue the IRS if they took away their tax exempt status. They said it's unconstitutional for the Government to assert its will on a religious institution.
I was just about screaming at my radio, "It's fucking unconstitutional for a religious institution to assert its will on the political process you fucking hypocrites!!!"

This was supposed to be a humorous response to TenaX's baddies in the closet comment. God it's too early.

A modest proposal:
Senator Obama; call McCains' debate bluff. Demand that if he is not going to show up tomorrow, then the VP debate should be held tomorrow, to keep all four debates on schedule.
Click on Recommend to keep the request up front, and hope that the suggestion gets to the Obama people. Thanks.
Do it. This would be a great time to catch Sarah and McCain off guard.

I wouldn't give it at all. I say call his bluff by showing up on Friday. Ole Miss is not going to cancel the debate. Either McCain shows up with his tail between his legs or gives Obama 2 hours of free airtime.
McCain says he'd show up if a deal is struck by Friday. I know it'd be playing politics with a crisis, but I sure wish the Dems could take away McCain's one cop-out option and make sure there is no deal until real late Friday night, or Saturday morning.

McCain's stunt would have had a better chance of succeeding had the Repubs been in charge of the Senate. But they're not. Oh well.

I agree, I wish they would do this - since they insist Palin is ready to be vp they can shame all the nay-sayers by having her go out there tomorrow against Biden. There really isn't an excuse not to do it since she won't be involved in negotiating the bailout. A perfect solution.

Totally agreed.

The debate commission said No to cancelling. Ole Miss is already out something like $5million to hold the thing -
McLame can't just drop his campaign - I'm with Letterman - you don't just suspend your campaign.
I still think we should all say Fine - you just conceded the election to Obama. Go home.

Plus... tsk! tsk! tsk! will say the folks in Mississippi. Do they want to lose Miss too???

I would love it if Dems called McCain's bluff and did the final deal on Sunday.
Ha ha ha ha!

Let us put Sarah on the grill. Click it on up please.

I'm utterly frustrated that Democratic-leaning websites such as this one haven't made a 30-second clip of:
1. Palin's witch hunt video
2. McCain's funky face (stroke or what?)
3. Letterman's Rovian attack on McCain's perceived strengths -- he made McCain look like a p*ssy!
The aforementioned are all fodder for the uniformed voter! You know, the ones who decide the elections. If this site offered digestible bits (clips), they would likely be picked up by bigger media outlets. I thought these clips were going to omnipresent this morning on ALL left-leaning blogs, and I don't see any of them. It's Christmas in September, but no one is opening up the gifts!

It's amazing how after 8 years GWB still looks like a first-timer on stage for amateur night. Not to mention how irrelevant he's become - seeing him last night was a stark reminder of how invisible he's been for at least a year.

That's whey call him "No Drama Obama"
I know it's a relatively small thing, but as I blogged, they called Obama to Washington specifically to deny him debate preparation time. They hoped he'd either refuse and thus get labeled a traitor, or if he went, surely he'd agree to move the debate and then it would all be a "joint decision" so no accountability for McCain.
No-Drama Obama fucked them good. He can do D.C. *and* the debate. No bother at all.

O I think so, too. I think Bush called Obama to DC purposely to give McLame an out. McLame must have called in a favor cause he and Bush hate each other.

Bush has owed McFogu since 2000 when he bowed out of the race. There were lots of closed door meetings between the two campaigns before the announcement, so I've always suspected that some deal was struck to give McFogu the nod in 2008.

Commander CooCoo Bananas definitely had that terror-stricken look he gets - the one he got on his face when he sat in that classroom for almost 10 minutes after being told we were attacked.
I'll never forget that as long as I live. There is not another president I can think of who would have just sat there while Americans were diving out of 50 story windows.

McCain is in a horrible lose lose situation. He can either have the right revolt against him because he supports the bill or he can have the country look at him in disdain for voting against helping the country go through in HIS Vice Presidential candidates words "the second great depression". It is a thin line he has to walk.

CNN says that it's a split on party lines but I still gotta feeling that McCain's supporters off the Hill are not so enthused.
Where's the Maverick? Where's the pitbull?
I mean CNN also suggests that Obama was blindsided - like he should have been prepared for it? Everyone was blindsided especially and more importantly his own supporters.

From watching CNN last night it was blindsided in the sense of being suckered punch. Candy basically said he talked to McCain on the phone about working out the bi-partisan statement and then goes back to his hotel room and sees McCain on tv making the announcement. Obama didn't seem to be coming off in a bad light in all this.

McCain just went all in a bad hand and Obama called it. Not only that, but Obama started it with the joint statement idea knowing McCain owuld do something half brained.

I've been wondering about McCain's eye. Has he had eye surgery? My folks each had had eye surgery for different reasons, and it caused their eyelids to droop. But I don't recall eye surgery being on McCain's health list. And I'm not sure it's the droopy eye that's the weirdest. The other one always looks dilated or something.
