Election Central Morning Roundup

MoveOn Ad Blames McCain's "Friends" For Economic Crisis
In a sign that this campaign is certainly not being put on hold as John McCain would like, MoveOn has this funny new one-minute ad on national cable, casting the blame for the market crisis squarely on John McCain and those folks he'd call "my friends" for the economic crisis -- folks like Phil Gramm, Rick Davis and George W. Bush:

"Main St. giving Wall St. $700 billion and getting nothing in return -- it's outrageous!" the announcer says. "Americans shouldn't have to foot the bill for a mistake that John McCain and his friends made."

Another Poll Gives Obama Huge Lead On The Economy
The new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll puts in perspective just how precarious the economic situation is for John McCain, with Barack Obama being trusted more on the economy by a 46%-32% margin. Overall, Obama leads 49%-45% in the horse race, with a ±3% margin of error -- meaning it is quite likely that the economy is what is making the difference and putting Obama ahead at this point.

Obama And McCain To Address Clinton Global Initiative
Both Barack Obama and John McCain will be addressing the Clinton Global initiative this morning, Bill Clinton's humanitarian organization, before heading back to Washington for the bipartisan meeting with President Bush to attempt to resolve the financial crisis. McCain is addressing the Initiative in person in New York, while Obama is appearing via satellite from Florida.

Joe Biden Still On The Trail
Joe Biden is in Pennsylvania today, defying the McCain campaign's request that he and Barack Obama stop campaigning. Biden has an event at 10:30 a.m. ET in Greensburg, and another at 2:30 p.m. ET in Wilkes-Barre.

Poll: Obama Edges McCain In North Carolina
In another very bad poll number for John McCain, a new Rasmussen poll gives Barack Obama a narrow lead in North Carolina, a Republican-leaning Southern state that hasn't voted Dem president since 1976. The numbers: Obama 49%, McCain 47%, within the ±4.5% margin of error.

Poll: Obama Up By Six In Wisconsin
A new Research 2000 poll in Wisconsin gives Barack Obama a healthy lead of 49%-43% in this swing state, with a ±4% margin of error. Wisconsin voted for both Al Gore and John Kerry, but only by extremely narrow margins, and it is perennially on the GOP's target list.

Huckabee Comes Out Against Bailout
In a display of grassroots GOP opposition to the proposed Wall St. bailout, Mike Huckabee has sent out a scathing e-mail to his supporter list, opposing the bailout and the leaders who are pushing it: "Frankly, I'm disappointed and disgusted with my own Republican party as I watch them attempt to strong-arm a bailout of some of America's biggest corporations by asking the taxpayers to suck up the staggering results of the hubris, greed, and arrogance of those who sought to make a quick buck by throwing the dice."

Right-Wing Pastors To Challenge Tax Laws, Endorse Candidates This Sunday
A coalition of right-wing churches is stepping up its challenge to the ban on tax-exempt churches endorsing political candidates, with pastors in 22 states set to give political sermons this Sunday. "I'm going to talk about the un-biblical stands that Barack Obama takes. Nobody who follows the Bible can vote for him," said Rev. Wiley S. Drake of First Southern Baptist Church in Buena Park, California.

A couple of weeks ago I joked that Intrade should open a line on when McCain would have a public meltdown. I didn't think it would be this soon, but I have the feeling he's right on the edge. A little more mocking disdain by his base and more bad polls like the North Carolina poll and I think Mount McCain is going to erupt.

Oh please, oh please, oh please....

I'm personally hoping McCain sees that clip of him getting dusted with foundation at Katie Couric's desk, the feed Letterman showed live on his own show -- so sweet! -- and blows that gasket...

user-pic

Time out. Hold it. Yesterday, with great fanfare, John McCain announced he was suspending his campaign to rush back to Washington. The economy had to be saved and only he could save it. Now it turns out he isn't going to Washington until this afternoon. He has to stop at Clinton's global initiative before saving the world.

His schedule puts the lie to McCain's claim that he is putting country first by suspending his campaign. I wonder if anybody except David Letterman will notice.

Yes. I saw a McCain-approved advertisement last night at around 10:00 p.m.

Five-and-a-half hours AFTER he said that he was 'suspending' his campaign.

http://thepajamapundit.com/

The suspension doesn't kick in until AFTER he addresses the Clinton Global Initiative. I still want some enterprising reporter to ask him why the CGI is more important than the presidential debate.

user-pic

And the Couric interview. If it was such an emergency why didn't he go to DC immediately?

user-pic

Exactly.

You know, I was lying there this morning thinking about this and I realized - you don't piss off Dave Letterman and live to tell about it.

Dave is a hell of a nice guy apparently - he paid his writers while they were on strike, he supported Warren Zevon when Warren was dying of cancer - he's a hell of a nice guy. But my god - pissing him off is really stupid if you are running some kind of popularity contest - which the election is to a certain extent.

user-pic

As a therapist, it was fascinating watching the guy, struggling... to come to terms with what had happened... as his mind clicked through the options and settled itself into a groove.

The Letterman rant hurts McCain because Dave has gone out of his way to cite McCain's "heroism."

Then comes Dave's "not-the-John-McCain-I-know" disclaimer on the candidate's decision to cut and run from the campaign trail and the presidential debate.

Plus he got in some digs about Palin ducking the press and being a not-ready-for-prime-time lightweight.

Yep, it ain't smart to piss Dave off. We haven't heard the end of it. Heheh.

user-pic

Last night, Letterman was raking McCain over the coals without the benefit of his writer.

Just imagine what tonight will be like!

Dave can hold a grudge for a long, long time, and he has a huge audience. Just ask Oprah!

PEACE

You know he did worse than just piss him off. He publicly *dissed* him. Not sure what the consequences of that will be for McCain, but it's one more instance where he comes off just looking like an asshole - publicly - without anyone having to say so.

I was thinking that Letterman is a nice guy, but that all comedians seem to have the boiling...you know...anger beneath the surface. It's what makes them edgy and sometimes funnier. Letterman has always had that, though it was especially noticeable on his earlier shows, back in the day.

Guys like that are funny, but also have big egos, and are quite insecure, no matter how much success they find.

And you don't do anything to piss them off. They have a big stage and they aren't afraid to use it.

I was also surprised at just how LONG Dave went on about McCain. You could really see his brain working the entire time.

user-pic

Or saving the country.

That too. I didn't want to be greedy.

McCain's Ad is still running in PA this morning.

What a surprise.

user-pic

That's not change we can believe in!

This election cycle continues to amaze me. From a sports fan point of view the ups and downs and twists and turns have had more drama than any game I have ever seen.

Recently this has all come from crazy (or crazy like a fox) Johnny Mac. I keep thinking about him as a craps player and he just keeps rolling the dice. He must be thinking that if he can just hit one big number he will get back in the game.

Poker player Big O will just keep playing his cards right and Johhny Mac is about to crap out.

Tweety made a comment last night that surprised me for it's lack of guile.

He said that when one party screws up, the voters throw them out and elect the other party, and that that principle is "...true north on the political compass", but every time the needle starts to point that way McCain jumps in shakes up the compass because McCain "...doesn't want the voters to go there".

Very insightful and honest, I thought.

I heard about those pastors on NPR last night. Fucking bullshit.

Of course, they mean the Old Testament, right? Because if they're to be believed and by "following the Bible" you "can't vote for Barack Obama," that means throwing all that "least of my brothers" claptrap that Jesus guy talked about out the window.

Amazing how little interest in the truth about ANYTHING the right is interested in these days in light of getting elected.

user-pic

Don't forget those prohibitions against Lying and Bearing False Witness. That coveting bit probably applies as well.

user-pic

The Letterman clips are getting a lot of airplay on TV. I think Dave may have done the job the "journalists" aren't doing: calling McCain's bullshit. If Dave in any way impacts some people's perception of McCain and this self-serving stunt we all owe him our gratitude. No joking.

In our PC world, I think comics often break the ice by daring to laugh out loud at some dickhead that the mainstream press is coddling. They verbalize what everybody else is thinking. Anyhow, way to go, Dave!

Agreed -- Dave was in rare form last night! He doesn't turn his codger-power up past "bemused" to "pissed" often enough...he was nearing Jon Stewart levels by the time he zinged Palin and the audience went "Ooooooooooooohh!" Even Olbermann seemed in awe...woo!

The Ten Commandments has no prohibition on cruelty to animals.

So why don't these Talibangelical clerics go fuck a duck?

user-pic

I agree that Letterman called out McCain's bullshit.

If McCain felt it was so dire to suspend his campaign than he should have been in Washington and not addressing Clinton's global initiative.

I have no problem with fundamentalist extremists endorsing John McCain.

Just revoke their tax-exemption so that they can give to Caesar what is Caesar's, effective immediately. Problem solved.

NPR covered that last night. The woman asked the leader of this group what will happen if they lose their tax exempt status and the guy was like, "It's no big deal. We'd just get it back the next day since churches are automatically tax exempt."

What the hell does that mean?

I really don't know.

He seemed to be saying that if the IRS took away their tax exempt status it only be temporary.

user-pic

Naive!!! Totally naive!

Also, Rasmussen tallies Obama for the first time ahead in NC at 49-47.

Oops, I overlooked it. It must be the excitement.

It hard not to be a little giddy right now.

It's true. The train seems to be leaving the station.

user-pic

HOPE is on the way!

I have OBAMA in 3 foot letters on the tarp on my huge chimney (and no neighbor has complained!) I have my bike outfitted with lovely OBAMA signs on both side of the back wheel (and the sign folks just loved the idea and helped me rig the signs!)

And Letterman, God love you!

I love the ad McCain is/was/still is running about "Change is coming" here in WI.

Funny he wasn't told the change is Obama and not him.

user-pic

SHOCKER!

Obama ahead of McCain in Rasmussen's North Carolina poll!

But how could this be?? Moose Queen assures us how everyone's so excited about McCain's plan!

user-pic

Yes, she's ready for the asylum.

Can she bring her exorcist in the asylum or d'they got rules? Maybe it's a state-by-state thing?

user-pic

Well, they don't really screen visitors... so..

Just thinking that the sentiment expressed by Huckabee amongst the right wing might end up causing a number of them staying home in November if they see McCain at all tied to this bailout. Worth a percentage point or two in a swing state like VA, FL, or NC (wow, it is pretty wild that this state is in play) could be enough to throw them to Obama.

While waiting for Campbell Brown to come on last night, I caught the last few minutes of Lou Dobbs. He and his blowhard buddies were adamantly against anything resembling a bailout. While I disagree with him, I am sure he is giving voice to many out there, and these people are disproportionately Republican.

There are a lot of Dems who don't like this bailout but they're not going to take it out on Obama and screw up our one chance of making sure this kind of thing doesn't happen again.

True. This shows how important enthusiasm about a candidate is. If the GOP were as enthusiastic about McCain as the Dems are for Obama, this would not be an issue.

People forget that this is the 2nd time McCain has pulled this stunt in a month. Remember suspending the campaign and convention for Hurricane Gustav? How many timeouts does he think he has? Why do I get the same feeling from him as I do with a panicked NFL coach who uses all his timeouts in the 3rd quarter and then when he really needs it in the final two minutes, doesn't have any.

Time for the Hail Mary.

Chris Webber in 1993 comes to mind. Calling a timeout on the court, with no more timeouts left. Given a technical, lose the game.

You kidding? Moose Queen is a Hail Mary. Gustav was an attempted Hail Mary. This is another Hail Mary.

There may be more. They're very smart, they've long known that they're losing and they're looking for something out-of-the-box to save them. This is the third try. Next may be McCain going to Pakistan to personally hunt down Bin Laden: Country First, brother!

user-pic

RED CARDS for mcShame and the Dame!

Watch for him to throw the ball out of bounds as often as possible, i.e., more distractions to gain time.

June 2008, Sarah Palin goes back to the same church, and tells them that the Preacher who laid on hands, to protect her from Witchcraft, helped her become Governor.

Read all about it, and watch her going through the witchcraft ritual.

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/june-2008-palin-tells-church-t.php

As the Democrats in Congress look to McCain to help get Bi Partisan support for the Bailout, Oilbama, who voted for the Bush Cheney Energy Bill, and raked in huge contributions from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, is completely irrelevant and simply part of the problem.
Thank God for real men like McCain who can reach accross the isle. Oilbama will no doubt sit back and critisize while McCain helps solve the crisis, America first style.

user-pic

"Thank God for real men like McCain who can reach accross the isle."

And of that isle would of course be the isle of Bermuda, where McCain and his cronies have set up tax shelters for shysters and America-haters.

Awww, why did you feed it? Now it's going to shitting all over the thread....

user-pic

I apologize. I just couldn't resist the irony that misspelling.

Obama+oil, = 'Oilbama!' I get it, wow!

Pretty clever shit, eh, Mahatma?!

Was is me or did anyone else think Bush look like a hostage, or like he was taking us hostage again.
And how can McCain keep bringing up 9/11 (like he did just now again)...If anything is more likely to raise distrust 9/11 has got to be it!

This is to scary...I just hope my one vote will make a difference, not like last time

user-pic

That Letterman video - or a cut version of it - will be circulating for the next 40 days and more.

mcShame caught in a lie. Mocked. Mocked for himself and for his running mate.

There is something about that video... the impromptu truths bubbling out of Letterman's mouth.

So many people will view that. It's going to be devastating in its effect on common people, the uninformed in particular.

mcShame's behavior has an air of desperation about it, an unhinged quality, vicious, unpresidential to the hilt. The man is completely unfit for office. His "second" unfit as well.

No pundit could duplicate the shock and awe unfolding within Letterman - as he struggled to connect the dots between the myth and the man - and COULD NOT do so. Put that together with the Enquirer article (and it's effect on the uniformed!). Put that together with the video of the exorcism of Palin. It's overkill. It will not play in small town and rural America.

The mcShame campaign is done for. Does anyone imagine the Couric interview will not be preceded (or followed) by the clip of Letterman?

Try to spin this any way you can. But it will not work.

mcShame has shamed himself and the nation. There will be hell to pay!

First it was Tina Fey, and now David Letterman. We live a pop culture, and many of those who haven't already decided who to vote for are greatly effected by things like what happened on David Letterman. And it wasn't one thing. It was the opening monologue, it was the top 10 list, it was the time at the desk with Keith by his side. All of it mocking McCain, who was once it seemed a proud man, a hero, and now look at him. Devastating for McCain.

user-pic

And it will continue to "PLAY" for 40 days and nights and more!

The politics of youtube. For better or for worse.

user-pic

A deluge - 40 days and 40 nights....

Letterman just kicked McSame's sorry ass. It was a delight to see. FINALLY folks are saying this out loud. That's a damned shame that The View and the David Letterman show are apparently the only ones who can say the emperor has no clothes but our trusty, learned, intrepid MSM can't.

Speaking of YouTube, a clip from last night's show already has nearly 404,000 views, not to mention it was mentioned on this morning's Today Show.

FWIW, I made sure I posted the YouTube clip on my FB page--I have to do my part. :)

Don't forget Joy Bahar (I believe she is a comedienne by trade)...

user-pic

Well I just saying - I was lying in bed before I got up, Thera, thinking about Letterman, which I watched, and you know it seems to me that you don't piss off Letterman and live to tell about it.

Letterman is very nice guy apparently. But if you are running some kind of popularity contest, which this is to a certain extent - you do not piss off Dave Letterman. And McLame really pissed him off.

user-pic

I think he did more than piss him off. It looked to me like some kind of Copernican revolution happening in his head... in deadly slow motion!

lol... My wife is a therapist. It's damn funny when you guys talk that way.

I think it was the "I got to get on a airplaine" and then to find out he was giving Katie an interview that really pissed him off. Keith just sat there probably thinking, I don't have to say a thing, Dave will do it all by himself.

user-pic

Yes - I mean, that throws a show into chaos to have a guest bail like that and he bailed for Katie Couric.

That's fucking rude. And I think Letterman is mad.

I also believe Letterman is a Democrat, but still...

user-pic

Nevertheless, the way his mind just got "stuck" in that groove... and wavering back and forth between the "hero" and the sorry mess of two totally awful candidates for high office.

PRICELESS!

How in the world did the Democratic party nominate this Muslim guy anyway?

I hate to tell you this, but you should probably change your pants.

Hope the IRS sends big, big bills to those pastors who have decided to take political stands and so are happy to render unto Ceaser, as the bible says they should.

But why do I have a feeling the IRS won't enforce the law against the right wing?

user-pic

"Republics are created by the virtue, public spirit, and intelligence of the citizens. They fall, when the wise are banished from the public councils, because they dare to be honest, and the profligate are rewarded, because they flatter the people, in order to betray them."

-- Justice Joseph Story : (1779-1845) US Supreme Court Justice 1833

Ignore it, people.

Ignored.

Second'd.

You know it's been a bad day when I troll rolls out the "muslim" smear. Scrapping the bottom of the barrel indeed.

that should be "when A troll..." I thought we were getting an edit function.

I think TPM has suspended all web site updates until the economic crisis has been solved.

Zing!

Time to strip those churches of their tax exempt status and deny them any future benefits.

Although, they can do whatever they want to do.... it's not going to make a difference to President Elect Barack Obama come November.

:)

Ohhhhhhh Dumb BillC..... once again your witty banter inspires me. My one question for you... How do you type with your head so far up your own ass?

The larger the lead Obama seems to attain, the more desperate your posts get. So keep on posting your mornic messages....they're like hugs from Jesus for Obama's supporters.

user-pic

Is this thing working?

Last night the whole site went down and then came back up but wouldn't let me in.

Was it just me?

It wasn't just you.

No, you're right. The site just frozed. Nothing worked.

user-pic

Me too, Tena. Our profiles were "missing" while they did "something." (Do I sound like Palin????)

user-pic

Yes - scared me to death. I no longer existed for TPM. LOL!

user-pic

Yeah... for a bit... we were treated like "witchcraft!"

user-pic

I saw that. O god - just shoot me! I really do believe the Assembly of God is a cult and not a church.

oooh, a little more exorxism humor!!

Check out Andrew's post over on Café on the subject of the successful server switch last night.

Just a guess but some out there(check out HufPo) think that this may be more than a stunt. His cancer may be back. His left eye droops and he's hired a new makeup artist.

Just imagine if he and Obama stand side by side: Who's gonna look not just more presidential but more alive?

user-pic

I noticed that eye-droop too. It is strange - I wondered about it but figured I just hadn't noticed it before. Anyone else?

user-pic

Well, that eye has always looked "puffy" in the past. And sometimes nearly closed. Now... to me... it looks like it's rotting!

yup, i had the same exact thought...oh no, i just realized, im sexist

user-pic

Someone else said that me yesterday - he's gotten a prognosis that isn't good.

It's a possibility. But if that's the case, then he's got to come clean.

No worries anyhows! Unblinking Moose Queen's got "that readiness" like she say.

This is potentially very bad. If McCain dies or is incapacitated before the election, and the repugs substitute Romney, they would keep the freakazoids Palin attracted and get back some of the moderates and independents leary of McCain's likely death in office.

Not to mention the sympathy factor.

Only a healthy McCain can lose this election - let's send positive vibes he can keep up the facade for six more weeks.

user-pic

O for the love of Pete!

Do you people stay up all night because monsters will come out of your closet if you go to sleep?

McC's eye droop and blinking anomaly could also be the results of a mini-stroke.

user-pic

Thank you big sister for keeping the rugrats in line. :)

Does he?

If he did he would lose the race. His condition and his age would be the talk for AT LEAST 2 days, and that is like Obama having to speak about his race. It's an automatic loss.

From Rass's tracking poll out just a few minutes ago (49(O) 46(M)):

Tracking poll results are based upon nightly telephone interviews and reported on a three-day rolling average basis. The overwhelming majority of the interviews for today’s report were completed before the President’s speech last night. However, it is worth noting that results for the past two individual nights of polling were quite a bit weaker for McCain.

Right-Wing Pastors To Challenge Tax Laws, Endorse Candidates This Sunday

Excellent! Strip away their tax exemption, and confiscate all their money and property in punitary fines.

Use the money to establish a national program teaching basic Principles of the Constitution.

Fuckers. Too bad there's no god - she'd smite them for sure.

user-pic

Word!

They are in violation of the constitution - it's just simple. They don't like the constitution - tough fucking titties.

OH!

What got me so fucking pissed while listening to them yesterday on NPR was how they said they'd sue the IRS if they took away their tax exempt status. They said it's unconstitutional for the Government to assert its will on a religious institution.

I was just about screaming at my radio, "It's fucking unconstitutional for a religious institution to assert its will on the political process you fucking hypocrites!!!"

"We fear change" - Garth

This was supposed to be a humorous response to TenaX's baddies in the closet comment. God it's too early.

Check out this video from Sarah Silverman:

THE GOOD Sarah!!!!

A modest proposal:

Senator Obama; call McCains' debate bluff. Demand that if he is not going to show up tomorrow, then the VP debate should be held tomorrow, to keep all four debates on schedule.

Click on Recommend to keep the request up front, and hope that the suggestion gets to the Obama people. Thanks.

Do it. This would be a great time to catch Sarah and McCain off guard.

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/senator-obama-call-mccains-blu.php

I wouldn't give it at all. I say call his bluff by showing up on Friday. Ole Miss is not going to cancel the debate. Either McCain shows up with his tail between his legs or gives Obama 2 hours of free airtime.

McCain says he'd show up if a deal is struck by Friday. I know it'd be playing politics with a crisis, but I sure wish the Dems could take away McCain's one cop-out option and make sure there is no deal until real late Friday night, or Saturday morning.

user-pic

Devious. And. Delicious!

McCain's stunt would have had a better chance of succeeding had the Repubs been in charge of the Senate. But they're not. Oh well.

I say call his bluff by showing up on Friday.

And I say that would be a brilliant move. The moderator would conduct the debate just as if McCain were there, and Obama gets to knock every question out of the park. He would get to make that complex connection of our economy with our foreign policy in a way that people would grasp.

user-pic

I agree, I wish they would do this - since they insist Palin is ready to be vp they can shame all the nay-sayers by having her go out there tomorrow against Biden. There really isn't an excuse not to do it since she won't be involved in negotiating the bailout. A perfect solution.

user-pic

Totally agreed.

user-pic

The debate commission said No to cancelling. Ole Miss is already out something like $5million to hold the thing -

McLame can't just drop his campaign - I'm with Letterman - you don't just suspend your campaign.

I still think we should all say Fine - you just conceded the election to Obama. Go home.

user-pic

Plus... tsk! tsk! tsk! will say the folks in Mississippi. Do they want to lose Miss too???

user-pic

I would love it if Dems called McCain's bluff and did the final deal on Sunday.

Ha ha ha ha!

I want the VP debate to be held tomorrow night.

Let us put Sarah on the grill. Click it on up please.

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/senator-obama-call-mccains-blu.php

I'm utterly frustrated that Democratic-leaning websites such as this one haven't made a 30-second clip of:

1. Palin's witch hunt video
2. McCain's funky face (stroke or what?)
3. Letterman's Rovian attack on McCain's perceived strengths -- he made McCain look like a p*ssy!

The aforementioned are all fodder for the uniformed voter! You know, the ones who decide the elections. If this site offered digestible bits (clips), they would likely be picked up by bigger media outlets. I thought these clips were going to omnipresent this morning on ALL left-leaning blogs, and I don't see any of them. It's Christmas in September, but no one is opening up the gifts!

A little more mocking disdain by his base and more bad polls like the North Carolina poll and I think Mount McCain is going to erupt.
You know, it looked to me like the whole right wing coterie were about to shit themselves on camera last night. McCain looked ready to drop. He looked exhausted and in over his head. Does he look even remotely healthy to you? And what about Princess George, tell me he didn't have that deer-in-the-headlights look while he was talking. I don't see how John McCain gets around the perception that he just choked big time. Hell, IMO, this is every bit as bad as a full-on meltdown. By contrast, Barack looked just as cool calm and confident as one would hope a US President would be in a situation like this.
user-pic

It's amazing how after 8 years GWB still looks like a first-timer on stage for amateur night. Not to mention how irrelevant he's become - seeing him last night was a stark reminder of how invisible he's been for at least a year.

That's whey call him "No Drama Obama"

I know it's a relatively small thing, but as I blogged, they called Obama to Washington specifically to deny him debate preparation time. They hoped he'd either refuse and thus get labeled a traitor, or if he went, surely he'd agree to move the debate and then it would all be a "joint decision" so no accountability for McCain.

No-Drama Obama fucked them good. He can do D.C. *and* the debate. No bother at all.

user-pic
I know it's a relatively small thing, but as I blogged, they called Obama to Washington specifically to deny him debate preparation time.

O I think so, too. I think Bush called Obama to DC purposely to give McLame an out. McLame must have called in a favor cause he and Bush hate each other.

Bush has owed McFogu since 2000 when he bowed out of the race. There were lots of closed door meetings between the two campaigns before the announcement, so I've always suspected that some deal was struck to give McFogu the nod in 2008.

user-pic

Commander CooCoo Bananas definitely had that terror-stricken look he gets - the one he got on his face when he sat in that classroom for almost 10 minutes after being told we were attacked.

I'll never forget that as long as I live. There is not another president I can think of who would have just sat there while Americans were diving out of 50 story windows.

McCain is in a horrible lose lose situation. He can either have the right revolt against him because he supports the bill or he can have the country look at him in disdain for voting against helping the country go through in HIS Vice Presidential candidates words "the second great depression". It is a thin line he has to walk.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/24/congress.mccain.reaction/index.html

CNN says that it's a split on party lines but I still gotta feeling that McCain's supporters off the Hill are not so enthused.

Where's the Maverick? Where's the pitbull?

I mean CNN also suggests that Obama was blindsided - like he should have been prepared for it? Everyone was blindsided especially and more importantly his own supporters.

From watching CNN last night it was blindsided in the sense of being suckered punch. Candy basically said he talked to McCain on the phone about working out the bi-partisan statement and then goes back to his hotel room and sees McCain on tv making the announcement. Obama didn't seem to be coming off in a bad light in all this.

It seems like O never gets rattled, at least not in public. That guy REALLY knows how to stay calm collected and thoughtful.

McCain just went all in a bad hand and Obama called it. Not only that, but Obama started it with the joint statement idea knowing McCain owuld do something half brained.

user-pic

I've been wondering about McCain's eye. Has he had eye surgery? My folks each had had eye surgery for different reasons, and it caused their eyelids to droop. But I don't recall eye surgery being on McCain's health list. And I'm not sure it's the droopy eye that's the weirdest. The other one always looks dilated or something.

Where is that story on HuffPo?
