Election Central Morning Roundup
New McCain Ad: Dems Don't Know What To Do About The Market
The Mccain campaign has another ad out on the economy, depicting Democrats as clueless on the economy -- and using some very interesting imagery:
Note that the "CEO rip-offs" line is accompanied by a shifty-looking pic of Franklin Raines, whom the McCain camp has accused the Obama campaign -- on scant evidence at best -- of receiving economic advice from. This is then followed by a photo of an innocent-looking middle-aged white woman.
Obama Ad: McCain Protects Companies That Hide Their Assets
Here's a new Obama national cable TV ad hitting John McCain on corporate accountability, hammering him for protecting tax breaks for companies that hide their profits offshore:
"McCain went to Bermuda," the announcer says. "And while he was there pledged to protect tax breaks for American corporations that hide their profits offshore. And grateful insurance company executives and their lobbyists who benefit from the tax scheme, gave McCain $50,000.
Obama Off The Trail, Biden In Virginia
Barack Obama does not have any public events today, probably because he's preparing for the first debate this Friday -- but he's also done a taped interview for the Today Show this morning. Joe Biden has an event as 12 p.m. ET in Woodbridge, Virginia, and he'll be speaking to the National Jewish Democratic Council in Washington at 5 p.m. ET.
McCain In Ohio And Michigan
John McCain is campaigning today in Ohio and Michigan, with a stop this morning in Middleburg, Ohio, and another this afternoon in Freeland, Michigan.
Palin Meets The World Leaders
This is Sarah Palin's big day at the U.N., where she'll be meeting Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
Polls: Obama Up In Colorado, Three Other Key States
A new round of Quinnipiac polls gives Barack Obama the lead in four key battleground states. The numbers: Obama is up 49%-45% in Colorado, 48%-44% in Michigan, 47%-45% in Minnesota, and 49%-42% in Wisconsin. The margins of error are all ±2.7%, except in Colorado where it is ±2.6%.
Poll: Obama Ahead In Florida
A new NBC News poll gives Barack Obama a 47%-45% lead in Florida, within the ±4% margin of error. All the other recent polls have put McCain ahead in this state, but who knows, this might be the start of an uptrend for Obama.
McCain's Transition Head Lobbied For Freddie Mac
Here's yet another lobbyist-related headache for John McCain when it comes to his campaign's attacks on Barack Obama. Bloomberg reports that William Timmons, the lobbyist who McCain has tapped to head up his transition team should he be elected, lobbied for Freddie Mac from 2000 up until the government takeover.
Biden Walks Back Criticism Of Obama Ad
The Obama camp released this statement last night from Joe Biden, retracting his criticism of the campaign's ad that hits John McCain for being a computer-illiterate:
"I was asked about an ad I'd never seen, reacting merely to press reports. As I said right then, I knew there was nothing intentionally personal in the criticism of Senator McCain's views which look backwards not forwards and are out of touch with the new economic challenges we face today. Having now reviewed the ad, it is even more clear to me that given the disgraceful tenor of Senator McCain's ads and their persistent falsehoods, his campaign is in no position to criticize, especially when they continue to distort Barack's votes on an issue as personal as keeping kids safe from sexual predator."

It's funny how McCain insists on pushing the Raines angle even though Raines had (1) nothing to do with the current crisis at Fannie and Freddie and (2) no involvement with Obama and his campaign. It's all about disinformation and muddying the waters--especially given the number of ties his campaign has to Fannie and Freddie.

I could think of several other words besides "funny".
It's possible that now that McCain's campaign has essentially been labeled as lying and sleazy they will figure things can't get worse. So why not just throw as much disinformation and outright lies out there as possible?
September 23, 2008 9:13 AM | Reply | Permalink
It's pretty obvious why McCain keeps throwing up Raines despite his unaffiliation to the Obama campaign.

Kissinger always had an eye for a skirt and he's a political operator as well -- once thought about being Rep. Governor of New York.
Don't be surprised if the old lady's man come's out of the meeting with a goofy smile and some unfelt and undeserved praise for everybody's favorite nitwit.

I'm a big Obama supporter, but I really hate ads like this. I just don't think this sarcastic tone really makes Obama seem more mature or relatable to people. I wish he would do more of the ads where he talks directly to the camera and increases his trustworthy image. I'm glad the campaign isn't trying to stay above the fray. But I'm just not sure who or what this ad really brings to the table.
I spend lots of nights and weekends these days talking to and registering potential voters, and I just don't think these ads enforce what they want to see in Obama. They just seem like politics as usual, it seems, to most folks, and that was one thing Obama had going for him. I wish they could find a way to stay aggressive without running ads that I feel like I've seen for the past 12 years at least.
September 23, 2008 9:16 AM | Reply | Permalink
Yeah, I thought that was pretty weak.
And I agree with you that there should be more Obama ads with him talking directly to the voters, both implicitly and explicitly making the case for change.
At the same time, there is a place for attack ads. But I think going after Davis' & Timmons' big bucks Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac lobbying offers more potential. As does the Keating 5 and McShame's mind-boggling failure to learn from that experience that deregulation leads to disaster.

Matt Damon was right, this Palin thing looks more like a bad Disney movie. Matter of fact, today's events could easily be turned into "Hockey mom goes Global". It would be Straight to DVD material.

And forgive me for repeating myself, but you just *know* Cheney had to pick up the phone to lean on Karzai to agree to meet with Klondike Barbie.
This is, of course, so that the next time she is asked if she met a single head of state, she can cheerily refer to the meeting that Cheney bullied Karzai into graciously attending.

Not a good ad by Obama camp but based upon their saying it will be a "national cable buy ad" this ad won't be run in swing states at all. Instead will be "discussed" by the media.
It is a tone deaf ad in terms of what is going on today. But this will not matter because of what is happening today with Paulson and Bernanke talking in front of Congress will be focused on more by the media.
But honestly the very BEST thing that Obama can do this week MORE than any ad or anything else is to make sure that he is totally preferred for Friday's debate. No ad is going to matter if Obama isn't preferred for the debate. He better have short, concise, scrip answers.
In terms of Raines in the McCain ad, I still say that it is subtle racism in that ad. That's just my opinion.

Why would Biden *publicly* criticize one of his own campaign ads? Especially one he had not seen? The rightwing has made hay out of this faux pas. Just when you think the Dems have got their act together (and coordinated) something stupid like this happens. Biden should know better.

I agree with this and I am sure Biden does too.
Now watch all sorts of Biden defenders jump on you and me both for saying this, usually they do it with stunningly sharp language.

Lets play spin the debate MSM style -
McCain gets angry = showing passion and commitment
Obama gives answers comprised of several complete sentences = being elitist
I'm sure there are even better examples -
Another debate party game - over/under
Number of times
We will hear spin after the debate that "What McCain meant when he said X was actually Y" -> 2.5
McCain says "My friends" -> 4
Other examples?

There are some hopeful signs out there that if McCain gets angry, some in MSM won't be that nice to him. As evidence, George Will's column today:

I'm hoping Obama ads come out on Thursday that 1) connect the McCain/Keating dots and 2) link McCain's staff directly to the Fannie/Freddie debacle.
The tone should be very harsh, and use the word "lies" several times.
I'm hoping this really piss McCain off so he goes into the debate on the offensive and already steamed. Then, I hope Obama can make him blow his stack. But the McCain campaign may have Johnny's meds balanced to prevent that.

The Obama ad is just... I felt nothing watching it.
Even the computer ad that Biden threw under the bus last night (and now he's trying to undo the damage) was better than this.
Come on, Obama guys. You can do better than this.
The Biden thing will be lost today in the economic news, including the Paulson-Bernanke hearings on The Hill. Probably the blogs will take it and CBS too, given the fact that was their interview.
The other ad today doesn't even deserved to be talked about. Just, ask yourselves, who's the candidate that's making political points in a moment of crisis like this and who's the candidate that's behaving like the grown up in the room? You already know the answer...

That's a pretty good reading for Florida. Need to really get out that black vote, not an easy thing to do, and somehow make a durable connection with Jewish voters that won't be undone by an election-eve He's-the-new-Arafat e-mail deluge, not to mention giving retirees something to grab on to. The hard issues are somehow appealing to dumb people and soft-core semi-racists. There are even a few military votes to be had, and only the party faithful and Talibangelicals are truly unreachable.

The Bermuda Obama ad is terrible. First of all I question it's veracity - I think the McCain camp could make issue of this ad and discredit it and all others in a big way. Hopefully the Obama Camp did their homework and wasn't just operating from one newspaper as a source.
Even then it's a stupid ad when there is much bigger issues to hit McCain on.
Bad. Bad. Bad. It's silly - McCain is hitting hard, and Obama is putting out a lightweight offering at best.

I don't know. People seem to like that Biden says things like this from time to time. It contributes to his overall image. The occasional moment of "honesty" is what a lot of voters like about him. Also helps keep away the association of Washington insider. He's almost . . . mavericky! I say let Biden be Biden.

I also don't see why everyone's so upset about that "Destination" ad. Now's a good time to slip something like that in without much analysis dulling the subliminals. I'm not saying it's the greatest campaign ad ever, but it paints McCain as frivolous and out-of-touch. It's contemptuous of the "serious elder statesman" leadership image he's trying to project. And it suggests instead an image of a detached old guy not connected with the American worker (or mainland). It's jarring and distasteful, and McCain's face is what you see the whole time and is the image you're left with.

Obama needs to stop allowing the cutesy allegedly "funny" ads - they suck. And they seem completely out of character for him.
This is like some Advertising 101 mentality - "Come on, babe, we gotta show everyone you're a fun guy." Seems especially incongruous with the severity of the current financial meltdown. We don't need cute ads, we need voters who are sitting on the fence. This won't win any of them over.
