Election Central Morning Roundup

McCain: Obama Puts Himself First, Not His Country
John McCain has stepped up his attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism. "Country first or Obama first," McCain told a Green Bay rally last night, then going on to attack Obama for opposing tax cuts and voting against funding for the Iraq War.

Obama In Florida, Biden In Virginia
Barack Obama is campaigning today in Coral Gables, Florida, where he has a meeting with economic advisers before proceeding to a rally scheduled to begin at 11:45 am ET. Joe Biden is campaigning in Virginia, with a rally scheduled for 12 p.m ET.

McCain In Wisconsin, Discussing The Economy
John McCain will be giving a speech on the economy this morning to the Green Bay Chamber of Commerce, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET. In the speech, he will savage Obama and Democratic leaders in Congress as do-nothings on the economy and financial crisis. McCain then has a rally in Blaine, Minnesota, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.

McCain Shows Dog Tags Of Dead Soldier At Rally
In another interesting moment from his rally last night in Green Bay, John McCain brandished his newest symbol of patriotism: The dog tags of a soldier killed in Afghanistan, given to him by the soldier's mother. "And then the note goes on to say: Please remember and support our troops in Afghanistan," McCain said.

Palin's Staff Won't Say Which Branch Of Government The VP Is In
Shades of Dick Cheney: The Hill reports that Sarah Palin's staff is declining to say whether the office of vice president is a part of the Executive or Legislative branch. Instead, they simply forwarded to the paper copies of Palin's remarks on what her responsibilities would be in office.

New Polls: Obama Up In Colorado, McCain Narrowly Ahead In Virginia
A new pair of InsiderAdvantage polls gives Barack Obama a healthy lead in Colorado, and John McCain a narrow one in Virginia. The numbers: In Colorado, Obama is up 51%-41% with a ±4.3% margin of error, and McCain is up 48%-46% with a ±4.3 margin of error.

With the usual disclaimers about polls, the Colorado one is very encouraging. I'm in the camp that thinks Colorado may be THE key state this year.

Colorado, Iowa and New Mexico. Get those and we win. Virginia would be nice, but I'm keeping my eye on the other 3.

Kerry states plus Iowa and Virginia would give us 272; that's probably plan B at this point. The western strategy is probably easier, but it's not like the Obama campaign has to make a choice; we'll probably end up with both.

Agreed. I think Iowa and New Mexico are pretty safe at this point. So it'll come down to Colorado or Virginia. And when/if Obama releases his Western Water Pact ad in Colorado, I expect his numbers to shoot up there. My money is on CO.

Agree with you over Iowa and New Mexico.

That water pact ad in Colorado should appeared weeks ago. Still waiting for it. Better late than never.

That's what I thought too. But then I figured that it might be the sort of thing to drop like 2 weeks out so McCain can't respond as forcefully as he'd be able to now.

user-pic

Might want to do it a day or two out...his ads tend to lose power when there's time to look for the truth:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122178554189155003.html

A Rush Limbaugh op-ed?!?!

LOL. Move along...

user-pic

He's just reponding to Obama's racial smear of him...the truth shouldn't hurt...unless Obama's a lying race baiter...then it may be a problem.

Other Limbaugh quotes:

"The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."

"They oughtta change Black History Month to Black Progress Month and start measuring it."

"Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it."

"Sorry to say this, I don't think he's been that good from the get-go. I think what we've had here is a little social concern in the NFL. The media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well." --on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb, while working as a commentator on ESPN

Who's the race baiter?

user-pic

If 1) Rush is linkable to the McCain campaign or McCaign personally it would've been in the ad. 2) If there are all these wonderful racist rants out there by Limbaugh why fake the ones used in the ad? Obama is a race baiting hate monger.

user-pic

Wow. SFCWallace is really starting to lose his cookies. Resorting to "Obabma is a race-baiter" arguments. The second-to-last refuge of a scoundrel.....

Rush calling someone a lying race baiter?

Okay...

And I'd also like to point out that we have yet another instance of SFC injecting race into a totally unrelated discussion.

Decide for yourself what it means, but it means to me that I'll be ignoring him again.

user-pic

Ignoring the truth won't change it...TheMessiah injected it in his racialy divisive ad. Don't take Rush's word for it. How about that right wing ABC?
http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/from-the-fact-1.html

user-pic

See what I mean? Losin' it.

SFC: Yes, indeed. I, too, am sick and tired of the constant racial smearing of Rush Limbaugh.

When will the morning come in America, that a rich, white drug-addicted nazi prick can ply his trade, without having the Mud People constantly saying mean things about him?

Rush represents centuries of the struggle of the White Man to conquer, commit genocide, steal the treasure of nations and dominate by any means necessary. You think that's easy? Hey, pal, that's hard work! (And don't tell me the innate racial superiority of Caucasians makes it any easier. Every Joker has his Batman, and it's a constant struggle for the Cheneys and Limbaughs of the world to remain Numero Uno, without some underclass schmucks or the impure of blood, disrespectfully trying to bust them down to Numero Dos... or, at the very least, Numero Uno-and-a-Half!)

STOP THE RACIAL SLURS OF RUSH LIMBAUGH NOW! Let his people go! They shall overcome! Oh wait, they always overcome...

user-pic

So, lying and race baiting is ok, as long as it's your guy doing it? I just wanted to clear that up.

Oh, go fuck yourself.

user-pic

You just did.

El Rushbo is pissed... Excellent!

user-pic

He's not pissed, he's just calling out Obama for being the racist he is.

Oh, yes, he's pissed because he can't escape for the hateful things he said and he continues to say every single day.

He's pissed, and you're reeling,

user-pic

Actually I was getting a little concerned again until this...I know it won't get the play that it would if McCain was a lying sack of race baiting shit...but TheMessiah won't be able to shrug this off...I think he'll get called out on this and look like the faux-post-racial-healer he truely is.

The desperation is beautiful, I guess that's what happens when the Palin bounce disappears before your very eyes. lol

Show some deference there! She's running for the second highest office in the land! And can see Russia from her house!

Wait. You put up a Rush Limbaugh article as truth? Really?

In the quiet words of Metallica: Sad but true!

user-pic

...it's an Op-Ed...responding to the lies Obama's putting out...that's y'all's biggest problem...you assume the Messiah is infallible...it must suck to find out he's just a lying race baiting sack of shit....at least the suit isn't empty anymore.

So it's racist to call out people on their racism.

Get your Newspeak Dictionary here, folks.

It isn't an issue of objective truth vs. what was Rush's intent in his heart when he made those comments.

And you notice that McCain's people have not come out said that they oppose Rush's view of immigration. Until they do, we can assume that McCain has joined their side in order to be elected.

user-pic

Actually Limbaugh was the biggest opponent of McCain and his stance on immigration. He opposed both McCain and President Bush's amnesty proposals but why let the truth get in the way of a nice racialy divisive ad?

Fuck Rush Limbaugh, and if that Hillbilly heroin taker wants to step his gelatinous ass into the ring and closely associate himself with McCain - I welcome that.

user-pic

That's the point, he's been a McCain opponent (until, like the rest of us he didn't have a choice). He was fighting against McCain the entire primary. Unlike the PUMAS we actually understand that our worst choice is still better than your first choice so we're backing him now. Obama is the one who's falsely linking them and trying to stir up racial tensions in the Hispanic community. Y'all call out Republicans daily for the supposed "secret racial codes" they use to stir up racial tension. How about one honest moment and call out Obama for this blantant attempt to divide the electorate along racial lines.

Gee, dividing people along racial lines.

Limbaugh's never done that!

Nobody in Georgia ever does that!

Yeah right.

user-pic

at least that's a semi-admission that Obama's a fraud...

..this coming from someone who is supporting a lame duck candidate.

Obama is genuine.

your intellectual dishonesty is the fraud.

user-pic

A geuine race baiting hate monger...
http://www.wytv.com/news/local/28423644.html

user-pic

So, just to clear it up....race baiting is ok if it's your guy doing it?

..you are assuming that I think Obama is racebaiting, that was your clumsy reasoning. Hope that clears things up.

You can't forget this beauty: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gg621-DrmU

user-pic

So you don't think the new ad is deigned to inflame racial tension in the hispanic community?

user-pic

So you don't think the new ad is deigned to inflame racial tension in the hispanic community?

Yes, and we stupid libs all believe that, overnight, Rush and the entire GOP suddenly got religion, and just went from hating this corrupt, phony little prick's guts, to embracing him.

Or maybe... they're just biting their lips, waiting for him to squeak-by on November 3. And then, in February... oh! Something goes horribly wrong! John McCain cannot continue in his duties as president, and will be resigning the office.

Oh look. Another corrupt, theocratic neocon becomes President of the United States... whose name no one even knew in August.

Ya, you betcha, if I were that great man of integrity, Rush Limbaugh, I, too, would be biting my tongue and keeping my hatred of McCain under wraps, tfn.

And I repeat, SFC: go fuck yourself. You've really become a pain in the ass, here.

user-pic

"You've really become a pain in the ass, here."
You've just convinced me to stay around awhile longer.

Which was why McCain modified his immigration stance, and promised that he would vote against his own legislation.

The best thing about this is it draws Rush freaken Limbaugh to the surface. That must be something that I'm sure McCain's advisers had hoped would not happen at any point during this campaign.

When you are championing the cause of Rush Limbaugh, you know you are a few bad McCain press days days away from sticking a gun barrel in your mouth. lol

Which is why McCain caved to the demands of the right wing. Hence his statement that he wouldn't vote for his own immigration bill. Why? Because he has that readiness and does not blink.

But then McCain switched gears and went to Rush's side for fence first. Then we have to take his word that after the border is secure then we'll go back to comprehensive reform. Like the border will ever be secure.

McCain said he would vote down his own immigration bill. He climbed into bed with Rush and the others on this issue.

user-pic

C'mon, SFC. Just use the N word. "Uppity" ain't gonna cut it anymore. Let out that manly American rage.

user-pic

Ok...but you asked for it...
"Nimrod!"

user-pic

Awesome!

"And then the note goes on to say: Please remember and support our troops in Afghanistan," McCain said.

Zero out of two ain't bad, right?

user-pic

At this point, McCain will use any mnemonic devices he can.

user-pic

Obama CAN win Colorado but I also think that Obama can in Virginia as well.

I still say Virginia will be easier to win than Ohio.

This morning on NPR, I think it was Steve Innskeep who said (and I'm paraphrasing) "And in today election news about what to do about the economy, Barack Obama stated that he will unveil a comprehensive economic reform package today. . . John McCain said he'd fire the head of the SEC". I sat up in bed laughing.

I think Obama is winning in CO, but not by that margin. They only polled 500 people, which seems like a pretty small sample.

I also think he's doing better in VA than that poll shows. Either way, he's very competitive, and well-positioned for winning.

i'm canvassing for obama here in northern virginia tomorrow. there's a HUGE push by the obama folks here.

Thank you.

Same here. I'll be hitting the canvassing tomorrow and Sunday in Lee District.

I agree. I'm doing voter registration drives in No VA. The Obama campaign is calling us in from MD because the demand is so high. We will spend all day tomorrow and Sunday at shopping centers. I think Obama is going to win VA, I really do.

when mccain showed those dog tags it was morbid ...............

user-pic

Nothing like exploiting the dead for political gain. That's supporting the troops, folks!

PEACE

user-pic

Even worse, using the dog tags of a soldier KIA in Afghanistan.

You would think McCain would not want to talk about supporting the troops in Afghanistan after Bush, with McCain's wholehearted support, decided that starting a new war in Iraq was more importing than winning the one we already had going in Afhanistan.

Get Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. All are doable. Take those three and its over.

Colorado, Virginia are icing on the cake.

I like the 50 state strategy but keep the pressure on OH, MI and PA.

Ohio is important because McCain is more or less completely screwed without it. Ohio and MI/PA are fairly closely related; it is highly unlikely that MI or PA would go red if OH goes blue. If McCain gains NH but loses OH (and only OH), he wins 270-268; however, he's very, very likely to lose Iowa or New Mexico as well.

For comparison: on 538, the current probability of McCain winning the election while losing Ohio is 3 scenarios out of 4,525. As best as I can tell, there are about five scenario runs (out of 10,000) where McCain wins either of MI or PA when losing OH.

I suppose I have my rose colored glasses on thinking about Ohio, but I can't help it.

I imagine McCain and co will pour huge resources into the state since they know as well as everybody that they can't win without it.

I think Mr. and Mrs. Clinton should move to Ohio for the next six weeks.

Not to be Captain Bringdown, but... did any of those 3 winning Republican scenarios on 538 involve the 11th-hour electronic flipping of two voting percentages, so as to throw the state and steal Election Number Three?

so i'm watching a mccain speech right now, and he prattled on about the financial crisis. two interesting things came out of it:

(1) he said that the chairman of the FEC should resign over this crisis. i have no fucking clue what the federal election commission has to do with the financial markets. someone should call Donald McGahn (FEC chairman) and pick his brain on the economy. NOTE: i rewound and watched the clip multiple times -- mccain CLEARLY said "FEC," not "SEC."

(2) he said, as stated above, that the chairman should tender his resignation. which is different than, "the president should fire him." but if, as the mccain campaign told us, by "fire him," mccain meant, "ask for his resignation," why did he change his (palin shout out here) verbiage? why not just stick with, "fire him," since that, according to mccain, OBVIOUSLY means, "ask for his resignation"?

He can't fire the SEC commisioner, so he flip-flopped... Again!

McCain-Palin'08: Fundamentally wrong on everything!

To be fair, "I'm going to tell the SEC chairmen that I've lost confidence in him and ask for him to please submit his resignation to me and hope he does so..." doesn't really fit on a notecard.

There was a poll out yesterday showing a tie in IA. I find this completely unbelievable.

user-pic

And that poll came out a day or two after the most reliable Iowa pollster - Selzer - showed Obama with a +12 advantage (52-40) in that state. That "Big Ten" poll was definitely an outlier.

I have little confidence in Ohio... they were suffering with an enormous economic crisis in 2004, and still managed to vote for that buffoon George W. Bush (worst President in history). There are far too many voters in southern Ohio who are culturalist voters who would vote against their own best interests just to vote for the old white Christian guy.

user-pic

Yet despite McCain's near perfect voting record on issues related to the Christianists' top concerns, they still didn't trust the guy until he put an end-times believer on his ticket.

I agree...Ohio is a state I'd rather not have be a key part of any Democratic victory equation. From what I've heard from people who have lived there/spent significant time there, there are many parts of Ohio where time has stood still. For them, it's still 1983 and while many call themselves "Democrats", their still waiting for the next Reagan and will continue to vote GOP until he/she comes along.

John McCain has stepped up his attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism.

In McShame's case, this is the first refuge of scoundrels.

esp. scoundrels that are desparate.

...and have no principles and no sense of honor.

This is just sad. "Look at me. I'm an old war-hero senator... so I can attack anybody else's patriotism."

Makes me fume with anger.

http://thepajamapundit.com/

Good to see Obama in Florida. I expect one the central themes of his speech to be McCain's desire to privatize Social Security.

He used the dogtags of a dead soldier during a political campaign for political purposes???

That's just SICK.

About as sick as trying (and failing miserably) to use the home of injured soldiers as a backdrop to his nomination acceptance speech, or using explicit footage of the attack on the World Trade Center towers as footage in a political ad.

These guys have no shame. None of them. This dogtags thing doesn't surprise me in the least. But as a veteran, it does disgust me.

If Rassmussen says it is tied, then expect that Obama is 4 points up. They are a reliably Republican pollster who tend to overstate Republican coter participation to make their numbers look better.

Just saying!

Is it just me or does John McCain look like he has literally lost his sh*t this week? I mean he looks stark raving mad. I hope that's the John McCain that shows up to the debates.

Obama has been doing so many appearances lately...anyone have some insight on his debate prep?

1 week until the first debate. I can't wait.

Here's hoping Obama keeps doing what he's been doing all week.

user-pic

...being a lying race baiter?!?

That would be what YOU'VE been doing all week at TPM.

user-pic

I'm sorry, I keep forgetting that truth is only required from the right-wing here...my bad. TheMessiah is infallible.

You should probably check the cover of the National Review....

All's I know is: if I were surrounded by as many of us boneheads as you seem to be... I'd leave this site and not return anytime soon.

user-pic

lol I Heart SFCWallace. I have to write that because he's losing it so badly that I don't want anything to happen to him.

Get some rest, my friend.

You are such a loser nazi man, why do you keep posting? As I said to you yesterday, you better stock up on Viagra because you are headed for a major identity crisis after the election.

And don’t you know the people who run Leavenworth don’t approve of the inmates using smuggled computers to disseminate propaganda on the internet? I’m told they can be very nasty about that.

If there is any doubt, my comments are for SFCWallace.

LOL. All week he's been beating Mr. McGoo and his friend Readiness/Non-Blinking about the head with their lack of any economic coherence. But of course you would probably not like to dwell on that. Better to keep the focus on one radio ad, than the realities on the ground. I guess you did get points for not talking about lipstick.

One thing is for sure, Obama has you scared.... I can tell by your posts.

user-pic

Nail on the head.

Ah, the smell of wingnut desperation in the morning...smells like...victory.

The economy will dominate for the rest of the campaign. McLame now has to pretend to be against everything that he was for the past 25 years. LOL, pass the popcorn.

Poor Wally, he sees it all slipping away and is becoming ever more desperate and pathetic.

user-pic

I think he looks very tired.

You better check out the picture of McCain and Palin that The Page has put right now.

That's just beyond creepy...

Back to the Colorado Water Pact ad:

It's a devastating comment by McCain so I think we'll see the ad drop in the last 2-3 weeks (just flood, no pun intended, Colorado and other tight western states with it) when McCain's resources are more limited.

They're saving the best for last.

They're some smart cookies.

It's against military rules for live ones to endorse, so . . .

user-pic

McCain has to win Ohio,Virginia and Florida. If he looses any of the three he's toast. Even if he wins all three Obama can still win with Iowa (lock) + New Mexico (lock) + Colorado.

This is assuming that McCain doesn't win PA, WI or MI. But I expect those traditionally blue status go as expected in this Dem leaning election.

So when McCain is getting his brains bashed in over the economy he reverts back to his old tried and true method of attacking Obama's patriotism. I guess by pulling out those dog tags he wants us all to remember how much he was in favor he is of the worst foreign policy disaster in our nations history.

McCain is a lying piece of shit. McCain has given up his honor, integrity and soul to be President

POW POW POW

Worth Checking out: Not only was Palin's "big new idea" for an on-line government checkbook already the law (introduced by Obama and Coburn, with John McCain an original co-sponsor) -- the bill took a long time to pass, because of a "Secret Hold" (meaning an statement of intention to filibuster) by none other than Alaska's senior senator, Ted Stevens. So Palins "new" idea is an old idea that struggled because of Alaska's opposition.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/08/30/secret.senators/

The Rovians running McCain’s campaign don’t know how to run a campaign when things boil down to real, immediate and vital issues facing our nation. This was totally evident this week. So they revert back to the lies and slime which they are experts in.

Even if Obama doesn't win in Ohio he has to make McCain work for it. Need to do what it takes to keep the number close at least.

Love the gov't checkbook story.

I like how McCain is trying to turn the debate back to foreign policy and patriotism, because he can't perform at all when it comes to the economy.

I think even in a serious debate about foreign policy, McCain couldn't match up. Even his Republican shield of assumed foreign policy expertise wouldn't help.

Ohhhh boo hoo! I am SFCWallace. I can feel the election slipping away, so I have to repeat myself over and over...LOUDER ADN LOUDER because I have nothing better to say than the same garbage over and over. I know that If McCain is behind before the debates there is no chance The Repukelicans can hold onto the White House. Boo Hoo Hoo!

McCain/Palin? Try McPain/Wailin come November! BOO HOO HOO HOO!

Obama is the future. McLame is the past. These generational elections are always very difficult for those who can't handle a changing of the guard... but breathe deeply and I am sure your head will not implode.

Repeat, "President Barack Obama. President Barack Obama. President Barack Obama." Do this every day between now and Obama's Inauguration, and I am sure you'll be fine.

Obama first or country first? That's rich coming from the guy who said he ran for president not to do anything in particular once elected but out of personal ambition.

McCain-Failin'!

user-pic

John McCain has stepped up his attacks on Barack Obama's patriotism. "Country first or Obama first," McCain told a Green Bay rally last night, then going on to attack Obama for opposing tax cuts and voting against funding for the Iraq War.

Seems to me that putting oneself first would entail voting FOR tax cuts that saved one many thousands of dollars. You know, like McCain did.

By voting AGAINST tax cuts, he very concretely put his country ahead of his own pocketbook. Obama will not benefit from the tax cuts he proposes. That's country first.

So Palin won't say whether the VP's office falls under Executive or Legislative branches.

Yet she is campaigning for the office based on "executive experience".

She's pretty crappy at sleight of hand.

You guys may be missing the real point, which is, Palin is just plain folks and most voters identify with her.

They don't like us and they don't like Obama...

and they vote in droves.
