Election Central Morning Roundup

Tonight: McCain's Acceptance Speech
John McCain will deliver his acceptance speech to the Republican convention tonight, laying out how he can overcome Obama's current lead in the polls with a combination of his biography and the issues. Perhaps his biggest challenge will be to get more applause than Sarah Palin's red-meat speech from last night.

Democrats Campaigning In Swing States Today
Barack Obama is campaigning today in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, seeking to hold down a swing state that Dems have only won narrowly in recent elections. Joe Biden will be in Virginia Beach, talking about national security in a historically-red state that is up for grabs this time around. And Michelle Obama is in New Mexico, discussing economic issues that face military families.

Obama On O'Reilly Tonight
Fox News will be airing tonight an interview between Barack Obama and Bill O'Reilly, a sort of pre-rebuttal from the Democratic nominee against McCain's speech. This could be tricky, to have the Dem candidate going one on one against one of the biggest Republican pundits.

NYT: GOP Convention A Lot Whiter Than The Dems
The New York Times reports that 93% of the delegates to the Republican Convention are white, with five percent Hispanics and two percent blacks. By contrast, the Democratic Convention was 65% white, 23% black and 11% Hispanic.

Poll: GOP Easily Holding On To Open Missouri Seat
A new SurveyUSA poll finds that the Republicans are favored to hold on to their open House seat in Missouri, where incumbent Kenny Hulshof is running for governor. The poll has Republican Blaine Luetkemeyer with 50%, and Democrat Judy Baker at 38%, with John McCain carrying the district by a 60%-36% margin.

Reid Spokesman: He Always Stands Up In A Fight
Harry Reid spokesman Jim Manley has taken exception to a line from Sarah Palin's speech last night, in which she said Reid doesn't like John McCain because he's incapable of standing up to him. "Anyone who knows Senator Reid knows he never backs down when he's fighting for what's right and that he always stands up to John McCain when he is wrong," said Manley.

Ha! Harry Reid is definitely a bulldog! If he doesn't like what you've done or what you're doing, he's liable to send you a strongly worded letter, or leave a curt message on your voice mail.

user-pic

Didn't Harry Reid used to be a boxer? Or was he just a member of the NV boxing commission?

user-pic

Either role would have prepared him well for his currently specialty, taking a fall while putting on enough of a show to make it look good to the crowd.

user-pic

He worked in the mail room department at Marshall Fields where he was both a wrapper and a boxer, depending upon the gift item.

I'm very curious to see what Obama does on O'Reilly. I hope he doesn't give them the opportunity to point out in outrage that McCain ran a "congratulations" ad on the night of his acceptance speech.

user-pic

Well, Palin was right about one thing: Reid is a pushover politically, regardless of how tough a boxer he is or was. And for anyone who disagrees, I have two words: Joe Lieberman.

Sadly, you're right.

On the other hand, McSame is at least as much of wimp as him. He couldn't stand up to the Taliban wing of his party and nominate the person he really wanted, Lieberschmuck. So he named one of their own. Which begs the question, if he can't stand up to the likes of James Dobson and Pat Robertson, how's he going to stand up to the Putins, Ahmedinejads and Kims of the world?

Im watching Orally Factor tonight, I feel kind of weird though, I did protest FOX News by not watching the channel...Not like i had a tough time not watching FOX News. Now that I think about, I think I would rather see McCain give a lack luster speech then watch FOX News. I don't think I want to help with that stations ratings...I'll just watch the interview on youtube.
Video: Hot Mic, Republicans Bashing Sarah Palin

Good idea.

Stick to YouTube and TPM for clips.

No need to actually switch the channel to the dreaded Faux beast. You may feel the need to take a shower afterwards to wash off the unpleasantness.

I walked in the bedroom the night Obama was to give his speech and my husband (not into politics) had on Fox, I freaked out and immediately changed over to MSNBC. He looked at me like I was nuts but I told him to NEVER go to that channel (Fox) to give them any kind of rating boost :)

Video of the RNC convention.

Obama will be his usual calm, centered self on O'Lielly just as he was in the Chris Wallace interview.

It's amazing to me how cowed the Dems continue to be. Take for example the Republican charge that Dems are "elitist," which was on full display last night. Why, in the comparisons between Obama and Palin, has the obvious fact of education not been brought up?

Who would you rather have in charge? An undistinguished graduate from the University of Idaho with a B.S. in Journalism, or a graduate of Columbia and magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law, who was selected editor of the law review at the end of his first year? Why is it not okay to point out the obvious disparity here?

Elitist! Eddycated peeple make me feel inferiur.

And we damn well should feel inferior to our leaders! I not only feel like I'm smarter than Bush, I _know_ I am. Smarter than McCain too. I don't feel like I'm smarter than Obama or Biden. Do we _really_ want the President to be dumber than us? I know your comment was snark but I've been waiting for a good chance to slip this thought into the conversation...

The prepared text of Palin's speech reinforces that point: according to it, Truman was a "habber-dasher," and we must build "new-clear" plants while preventing Iran from acquiring "new-clear" weapons.

Yeah, she gives good speech -- for the red-meat crowd, anyway -- but surely it's disturbing that John McCain's vice-presidential pick has to take the wingnut version of 'Hooked on Phonics.'

What are you guys talking about? The speech I heard last night went something like this:

"And now, comrades, as we stand besieged by fusillades of partisan catechisms, we cannot afford to forget a fundamental verity: our opponent is a rhetorical vessel and nothing more. He is but a hubristic neophyte, a man clinging with fervor to long-discredited melioristic chimera and a man who is followed by throngs of frothy-mouthed, purblind acolytes, wishing to foment change yet knowing not even for what they cheer; to brand them Pollyannas is to demean and debase a harmless member of our lexicon. Countrymen and countrywomen, I shed tears for this great nation that a contest can be borne from such poverty of substance."

By lexicon you perhaps meant legion? I don't consider Palin part of the Republican vocabulary ;-)

"Pollyanna" is part of our lexicon. The word "Pollyanna" is demeaned by the usage. :)

touche my friend, touche!

BTW I strongly resent McAsshole's coopting of the endearment "my friend". I rarely use it but now I feel a little sticky and smarmy just typing that...

Hockey Dude, Levi, has posted his convention diary.

Hockey Mom, Sarah Barracuda requests that you go to the link, and recommend it.

Sarah Barracuda demands that you click it on up now, or she will make Moose Stew out of your asses.

YUP! YUP!

In all seriousness, can you imagine being that fucking kid? A week ago you were hanging out with your friends, playing hockey and fishing, you had knocked up the Governor's daughter but no big deal. And a week later you're whisked off to St. Paul and are now the center of a Presidential campaign, being rolled out for publicity photos. Unreal.

I've been *trying* (in vain I guess) to hold back on this, but...

The photo of the formerly "great" McCain on the tarmac shaking hands with the soon-to-be/shotgun/son-in-law of the secessionist, whack Governor of Alaska is just too...

surreal? nauseating? laughable? sad?

Let that be a lesson to all you kids out there. Always use condoms!

Of course, that's information Sarah Palin wants to deny to America's youth.

"Anyone who knows Senator Reid knows he never backs down when he's fighting for what's right"

Oh, I get it.

He simply doesn't think things are right very often, if ever.

user-pic

...especially when it comes to standing up to Fighting Joe Lieberman...what a loser.

Please fix the fucking server already, TPM. For a "progressive" media organization, you have the worst customer service response.

Yeah, constitution-thrashing fascist liars are a bitch, but at least the blogs run on time.

Can someone explain to me how the GOP women can claim sexism, yet the men from IN are wearing "Hoosiers for the Hot Chick" buttons?

http://www.thetruthpursuit.com/

user-pic

Calling a woman a "Hot Chick" is a compliment. Questioning her competence and qualifications is sexist.

user-pic

...no asking if she'll be able to give enough attention to the job with 5 kids is sexist. Bill Clinton had enogh time to get a few blow jobs in between breifings, I'm sure she'll be able to squeeze in a diaper change if necessary.

Was it also sexist when the same questions were asked of John Edwards??

user-pic

They weren't, or of Biden...they were heros for "soldiering on" through tough times.

Hardly.

http://www.ajc.com/opinion/content/opinion/bookman/

"Rush Limbaugh said the Edwardses were turning their eyes to the campaign when they instead should turn their eyes to God."

"Katie Couric, in a “60 Minutes” interview, accused Edwards of mining his wife’s condition for sympathy votes: 'Even those who may be very empathetic to what you all are facing might question your ability to run the country at the same time you’re dealing with a major health crisis in your family,' Couric told Edwards."

"And in Time magazine, columnist Jay Carney wrote that “surely many average Americans have to be wondering at what point the candidate will decide that his duties as husband and father to three children, including a 6- and 8-year-old, trump his duty to his country and the cause of winning the White House.”

Hardly.

Sarge, I gotta ask you, how many kids do you have? What are their ages and age ranges? What are their needs and what kinds of demands does your family place upon you? Have you given any thought to how you can best balance the demands and needs of your family against those of your job?

If you're not asking these kinds of questions of yourself every day, then you have no concept of what it means to be a working woman. No idea. So don't talk to me about sexism. You haven't the foggiest notion of what feminism is about.

so Palin is ready for a news conference, right? ... like, tomorrow???? (Dems should push this, and milk it for all it's worth when she's kept under wraps for a couple more weeks)

Loved Biden's responses this morning. Taking the very high road on Sarah Palin, which is so definitely the path for us right now.

Shorter Biden: "She's an accomplished woman, and certainly can deliver zingers, but there was nothing in the speech about how they plan to get us out of the hole they've spent the last eight years digging us into."

Luv it!

user-pic

Not only was the GOP convention significantly whiter, but significantly more male--68% male vs. about 50% for the Dems.

Check out CNN.com right now. There's a huge pic of Palin and it looks at first glance like she's giving a Nazi salute and shouting, "Seig Heil!"

Fitting for a Buchananite. Didn't he praise Adolf Hitler once? She voted for that fascist.

They've taken it down already. I stuck it here:

Obama needs to stay away from FOX cause I smell SHIIIT!!

Wonkette has a picture of the lipstick attack dog . . .

user-pic

Where's the lipstick?

Look down . . .
:-P

user-pic

Hehehehehheeh

Where the heck are the avatars?

A GOP star is born (unqualified at that)!

Barry should have picked Hillary rather than dial a hair plug. Now Palin is going to take her heels and walk over Barry the eunuch as she drops the glasses, lets down her hair, shows cleavage and takes the middle aged white vote.

The girl is totally unqualified but so is Barry Hussein Obama.

You mean a CELEBRITY is born!!

LOL. Just words. Ha ha

It's fun when the rightwing falls into their own talking points.

Sarah Palin = "Dangerously Inexperienced"

Your trolling is so last March.

user-pic

I really need to complain about the quality of trolls that we're getting here lately. Where's the imagination? Where's the conflict? Just going aronud saying "Barry" and "Hussein" seems rather dull. How about throwing out a phony issue or two? C'mon now, try a little harder.

If all you want is to see cleavage, just watch Fox News.

If all you want is to see cleavage, just watch Fox News.

Lapel pin, would someone please tell me what lapel pin Palin and her husband were wearing?

user-pic

"Alaskan Independence Now!"?

"Jews for Jesus"?

Obama agreeing to appear with O'Reilly:

BIG MISTAKE. There's nothing to be gained.

I was concerned he was walking into a trap, one of what Bill Clinton described so accurately as a 'hatchet job' but then I realized: He's smarter than O'Reilly. He'll be prepared for the bullshit that Bill is sure to pull and hopefully will push back enough to get Bill to STFU for a second or two...

Don't McCain and Reid go to boxing matches together in Nevada?

BILL O'LIELLY : Is there a place to watch his crap show live online?? I don't have a TV...

PS - The "Shrilla from Wasilla" makes me ill.

"Shrilla from Wasilla"

That's good...

SchrodingersCat: Thanks Cat. Saw "Killa from Wasilla" on the TPM homepage, and the Shrilla part just came to me...

Ugh, the next 9 weeks are going to be brutal. Tough on the high blood pressure...

user-pic

The magic word was "lipstick". Last night, Sarah Palin said that the difference between a soccer mom and a pitbull was "lipstick". It was so nice of her to put this race into perspective.

Let me say up front that I am not calling Sarah Palin a "pig". I am calling her Party, the GOP, a PIG. It is John McCain and his Party that have brought out an attractive lady, with very little vetting before the American people, and want everyone to look at their Party in a different way.

Forget the economic concerns. Forget the bank failures. Forget the shredding of or Constitution. Forget the torture of prisoners. Forget the trillions of dollars in debt. Forget the cost of gasoline and food. Forget the value of the dollar and the jobs that have left our country. Forget the massive transfer of wealth. Forget the utter incompetence and criminality of this Administration and the GOP.

Now they have marched Sarah Palin out in front of their Party as the new face and the new "beginning". But make no mistake, there is no new beginning. It is the same old slop. They have effectively put lipstick on the pig, the GOP, but it is still a "pig". Thanks to Sarah Palin for putting this into perspective for the American people.

Loved Biden's responses this morning. Taking the very high road on Sarah Palin, which is so definitely the path for us right now.

I disagree. Between Rudy and Palin I felt as though I was watching a Bund Rally. It was shrill, dismissive, hateful, full of lies, distortions and mocking disinformattion. Clearly, they have no respect for the political process. If McCain pulls out a win our country is sunk and playing "nice" right now will get our Party nowhere.

user-pic

Something that jumped out at me this morning - on the Joe Scarborough show McCain advisor Nicolle Wallace was asked about when Palin will be available to be questioned by the press. Wallace gave a half-laughing, half-"outraged" response which, essentially, was "Why should she talk to the press given the way they've treated her? She'll just talk directly to the American people."

Which means they probably do not intend to allow her to ever be interviewed by any journalists - except maybe Fox News types. And they'll use the Babygate nonsense as justification.

How long can they get away with that? We'll see. But I think there should be a "Palin clock" counting how much time has passed since the announcement last Friday without her answering questions from a serious journalist (i.e. not People Mag).

Which means they probably do not intend to allow her to ever be interviewed by any journalists - except maybe Fox News types. And they'll use the Babygate nonsense as justification.

Jonathan Alter suggests the same scenario in his latest column:

http://www.newsweek.com/id/156982

Barack in Pennsylvania. Biden in Virginia Beach. Michelle in New Mexico.

Anyone know the whereabouts of the Clintons or Gore? Are they on the campaign trail at all?

Palin should challenge Obama to a debate. If he were to refuse, it would hurt him with independents.

I thought her most devastating line was about Obama being two-faced in Sacranton and San Francisco.

Rudy went on too long but his mockery of Obama's present votes was good.

quote from the above linked NYTimes article is just perfect:

"According to a New York Times analysis, the Democratic speakers frequently used the following words last week: change, family, energy, jobs, health care, economy, mom/mother and Iraq. So far, words that Republicans have been using often include God, reform, character, family, taxes, leader, hope and hurricane."

"Reform" and "Shaking up Washington": Question: Beyond stopping earmarks, exactly what does McCain/Palin mean by reforming Washington? What, exactly, do they see needs reformation (Palin's a great earmarker, and McCain is up to his chin in lobbyists)? Similarly with 'shaking up Washington': what needs to change and can be changed? What do we need instead of what we have? McCain/Palin seem to believe they can run a successful campaign that substitutes vacuous slogans for policy prescriptions. I hope they're wrong.

re: Obama appearing on O'Reilly:

I really don't get this at all. I understand that Obama wants to reach out to crossover voters, but this is akin to McCain going on Olberman's Countdown. Regardless of how well he does, the O'Reilly gang's going to do everything they can to make him look bad.

What's the point? I can see talking to Wallace, but this is just a risky endeavor w/ little potential upside.

I don't know, maybe so it is so the Obama camp can point out the fact that he will talk to anybody, whereas the Republicans will only play it safe and speak to Fox News and their ilk. I am sure they have some good reason for it that will become apparent after the interview.

We can't win an election by being in an echo chamber. Thing is, Obama will be setting a great precedent by going on there. McCadaver will have to do the same at some point. Rachel Maddow, perhaps? Or Keith. Either would work.

Is it just me or is there not an easy line of counter-attack to this "executive experience" argument that supposedly makes Palin so qualified. Off the top of my head, I can think of 2 responses:

1. By that rationale, she's more qualified than McCain.

2. This is the exact same gambit, with the "executive" keyword, put on by the exact same people that got W elected in 2000. Look how that turned out.

Dems have to get back to the issue of Judgement, and away from this false argument that tries to stack up their legislative accomplishments to a single Governer's thin tenure. On Lauer this morning, hours after Palin ripped into Obama, Biden comes out and...cozies up to Palin?! It makes him look like Lieberman 2000--another smiling Joe Pushover.

I hope this isn't an early sign that Schmidt's Roveian trap is working, ie. that all the manufactured pre-speech bluster about smear-mongering journalists has actually cowered the msm and the Dems into walking on eggshells around Palin. They need to take the gloves off before Palin catches fire.

I do not think Obama should respond to the "executive experience" argument.

If the GOP wants to ride this horse, let them. That's not what Obama's campaign is about and to argue the point would at best be a distraction and worst be a opening for McCain to take the lead on their reform argument. It would pit Obama against Palin which is the last thing we need. This is about McCain, not Palin.

The "executive experience" argument is a trap, pure and simple.

The McCain camp strategery from now until election time will be to keep McCain and Palin away from any serious Media. They are also waiting until just before the VP debate when they will unleash all sorts of scurrilous disinformation about Joe Biden.

This could be tricky, to have the Dem candidate going one on one against one of the biggest Republican pundits.

When will you people learn? Obama will do fine and he'll win some fox-watching swing voters. That is the point of this campaign, remember?

I agree, I don't think Obama should be afraid of answering questions from that goofy blowhard.

I’ve given quite a bit of money to the Obama campaign this year & I’m likely to give more, but not until I see them go on the attack. I got an email this morning form David Plouffe (me & millions of other contributors) to the effect that the answer to Sarah Palin’s sneering attack on “community organizers” is to say, “Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.” sorry, the right response will be to hang Palin out to dry for her lies & radical right-wing ideas. Don’t explain, don’t complain — make the right wing culture warrior play defense. That’s when I’ll cut another check.

Here's a response to the lies--

http://www.samefacts.com/archives/campaign_2008_/2008/09/palin_v_reality.php

--but if you want Obama to get down in the mud with these fools, you're not looking for a winning strategy.

Cut your check, register some voters, be prepared to do canvassing in swing states over the next eight weeks. That's how you can help him win, not by giving bad advice.

user-pic

I don't think you have to "get down in the mud" with Palin & McCain in order to make them play defense. And it may well be that the most glaring lies & contradictions need to be put out by surrogates, but making nice like Biden did this morning, while it might be a good opening move, is just another way of capitulating to the noise machine. I realize that Obama is trying to promote a new kind of politics & I admire him for it, but it is still, after all, politics. It's about persuasion.
