DNC Spending Half A Million Dollars To Hit McCain With Michigan Ad
Yesterday it was widely reported that the Democratic National Committee is going up with a new ad in Michigan hitting McCain and tying him to Bush on the economy.
Now the DNC has filed its report on the ad expenditure with the FEC, so we now know the size of the buy: It's $450,000.
Nearly half a million in one state strikes us as a pretty sizable buy -- it certainly contrasts with some of the token buys McCain has been doing to get free media -- and it suggests that the DNC is ratcheting up its financial commitment to targeting McCain as the race enters the home stretch.

It's "donated" to the RNC. Palin is still going to be fundraising, she has 30 dates over the next 60 days in this endeavor - just that the money goes to the RNC. Of course the RNC can do with it what they like meaning essentially do with it whatever the McCain camp asks them to.
So Obama should have accepted the public money, getting a free $84M and then had all of his donors swith to donating to the DNC, who in turn could have spent it on Obama.

Then can someone please explain to me what the frickin' point of public financing is?

I'm not sure Jonze's reply is completely accurate. I'm pretty sure McCain is no longer able to even accept campaign contributions after his convention. It's true that people can simply donate directly to the RNC, but they can't give to McCain at this point.
And the reason Obama opted out instead of staying in is now he has no limitations to how and where he spends his money, while McCain does. And ads that say, "I am Barack Obama" have a different impact on voters than ads that say "paid for by friends of John McCain".

I just visited johnmccain.com (ugh) and when you click on the donate button, asks for money for something called "McCain-Palin Victory 2008".

This is why Obama said public financing was broken.

That's some serious coin, especially in a state that went blue last time. For what it's worth, I'd like to see Team Obama go after McCain's Maverick image - paint him as unstable. As like Bush, only with a strong dose of Cheney. We haven't made enough of that guy this election.

McCain's crap has been shoved into every commercial break in my local (Mich.) channels for months. The cleb spots, spots claiming Obama is going to raise everyone's taxes, etc. It's been a flood of negative ads.
I'm glad now that McCain has blown his pre-convention wad, Obama is hitting in Michigan.

The fact that they're putting this much in one state makes me think that the DNC had a pretty good month.
I know McCain reported like $40M for August. Anyone know how the RNC did?

Where is the ad using McCain's own words that Americans will not do hard work for $50/hour, but immigrants will do the same job for $5/hr. Americans are too lazy to work hard. See actually said that...
Use that in Michigan and Ohio and he's toast.

Greg I think this had to do with an ad airing in Michigan pairing Obama with Kilpatrick. I don't know if the timing works but the local republicans are airing something locally agaisnt Obama.

Only in Macomb County I believe. Also it's obviously before the text message scandal broke. I think most folks will see it for what it is. WHile many in Detroit and the surrounding suburbs knew Kilpatrick was up to no good, his national persona was one of a rising star.

I think the Obama people are worried about Michigan.
Did anyone else see one of their campaign officials on CNN, during the D convention, going over the electoral college map with (I think it was) John King? It was all set up according to CNN's prognostications and he challenged the Obama official to show us how the O campaign saw the electoral college playing out. Man, after he had clicked on all the blue states he felt confident about -- the usual strong blues -- he stared at the map and then very tepidly -- his lack of confidence made me so uncomfortable -- clicked on Michigan, and then Virginia.
It was the most sobering moment of the convention for me, for sure.

If so, pollster.com is way off target. Cause on the right side of the screen the trend line looks ok.

Don’t know if anyone from DNC of Obama camps monitors this site, but if so I hope they’ll seriously consider the two following types of Ads (and the pros will do a better on it than me, I’m sure):
1. LOTS OF TALK. Voice: At the Republican Convention we hard lots of talk. Lots of talk (as a collage of speakers, Romney, Rudy, Palin, slightly longer on Bush, McCain.) Narrator: But with all that talk, we didn’t hear anything about: the economy (stats, images), our veterans (wounded, New GI BIll “opposed by SEn. McCain”) and maybe one other big time issue “our planet”???….Voice: Do the Republicans believe you’re not interested? Or do they just have nothing to say?:
2. NO title I can think of. Brief clips of Rudy, Palin at convention, Palin on stump with the mocking of ”
community organizer”. Two or three real community organizers (I’d like a White, a Latino, a Black)…and alternating narration over real images of them at work…”My name is ….. and I’m a community organizer…(for all) - at least one: “I work for a faith based organization, as did Barack Obama”…alternating voices: we work with the homeless, including veterans, those who have lost their jobs, even their homes. But they’re good people. We help retrain them, find employment. To get them back on their feet. They’re good people….ending: Senator Palin, we invite you to come and spend a week with us. Hopefully you’ll appreciate us more. And yes, we’ll gladly spend a week with you.”
