Did Palin's Pay As Wasilla Mayor Really Get Cut?
One thing Sarah Palin cites as proof of her reform credentials is a pay cut she says she took when she became Mayor of Wasilla in 1996.
"As mayor I took a voluntary pay cut, which didn't thrill my husband; and then as governor I cut the personal chef position from the budget, and that didn't thrill my hungry kids," Palin said recently, repeating a frequent refrain.
But did she really get an overall pay cut as mayor? The record suggests a more complex story.
While Palin did appear to get a pay cut ordinance passed upon entering, several years later her salary had actually gone up to the point where it ended up thousands of dollars higher than it was just before she took office, local press reports at the time show.
Two reports in the local Alaska press in 1999, three years after she became Mayor, say explicitly that her salary at that time was $68,000, higher than the $64,000 it was just before she took over as mayor. The pay hikes were apparently due to mandated salary increases that the City Council refused to overrule, though that's not certain.
The McCain campaign was unable to explain why her salary had gone up and how that squared with her claim of taking a cut.
Asked for proof of her claim that she took a pay cut, the McCain campaign provided us with minutes from a Wasilla City Council meeting from November 13, 1996, which appear to show that Palin introduced and passed some sort of measure to reduce her salary by 10 percent.
But that's not the end of the story.
Three years later, on March 12, 1999, an article ran in The Frontiersman which explicitly reported that Palin's salary was higher at that time than it was when she took over. The article describes a City Council vote where the Council, in the words of the paper, "decided to leave the mayor's salary at $68,000." It was $64,000 when Palin took over, according to the paper.
An article in the same paper a week earlier shows Palin herself discussing the fact that she'd accepted the increase, albeit against her will:
The mayor's wage was increased from $64,000 to $68,000 in 1996, just before Sarah Palin was elected."I voted against it when I was a council member and I felt like a hypocrite when I came in and had to accept it," Palin said.
"Two and a half months after I was elected, the new resolution kicked in, but I took a pay cut down to $61,200. Then I had to accept the $68,000 since the last fiscal year started."
So what appears to have happened is this: As a Council member she voted against hiking the mayor's salary from $64,000 to $68,000, but it passed anyway. When she came in as mayor, she passed the ordinance which brought her salary down to $61,200. But that may not actually have taken effect, and Council-mandated raises brought her actual salary up to $68,000.
The McCain campaign was unable to explain whether her salary actually was cut. And the McCain campaign declined to comment on the fact that her salary had actually ended up higher than it was when she first took office, beyond referring us back to the original minutes of the initial meeting where the first ordinance was passed.

Did Palin's Pay As Wasilla Mayor Really Get Cut?
Did she say it was? Then probably not.

Hey Greg,
You should also factor in something that the NY Times reported last weekend, that Mayor Palin had Wasilla buy a Chevy Suburban for her after election. Other city employees called it the "mayor-mobile".
Since a new 1997 Chevy Suburban cost about $24,000, that could blow a big hole in her whole money-saving claims.

13,000 Dreckles 2,000 years ago would be 5.65 Trillion in today's Dreckles figuring a paltry 1% rate of inflation over two millenia. The 32 Dreckles would come to 13.9 Billion
Going backwards, 13K today would mean being a slave 2,000 years ago and staying that way for roughly 1,060 years before making a cool 1.00 Dreckle per annum.
Quite.

I have to say, WTF on this salary? I live in SW Washington, in a cluster of small cities ranging in size from 4,500 to 22,000. All of the mayors are "volunteer," which is to say they make peanuts. The mayor of the 22,000 town makes less than $3000 for his time. The smaller town mayors make about $300 to $500 per year. They are not meant to be jobs, full-time or otherwise. What the hell is a 5,000 person town (the size of Wasilla when she took office) doing paying someone $68,000 to be mayor? And--AND--allowing her to hire a city manager??? I am baffled by this.
My county has 105,000 people, and our county commissioners make $68,000 for full time commissioner positions. She made $68,000 back in the '90s for governing 5,000 people part time. Alaska is one big racket. Go to the Alaska Report on-line and learn how friggin' corrupt ALL Alaskan politicians are. It's incredible.

Exactly. I live in a borough of about 11,000 people. Our mayor considers himself part time and makes $2800 per year. Our borough manager makes $40,000. As Palin once said, the job is not rocket science. She was overpaid at $6,000, let alone $60,000.

Suggest you research the timing of the pay cut and the hiring of the new City Manager.
Various reports have suggested that Wasilla hired a city manager at (IIRC) $50k under Palin because Palin wasn't able to cover the day-to-day duties as her predecessors had. If true, the pay cut may have been a recognition that she wasn't doing as much as her predecessors

She also had to hire a chief administrator to help her run the town as a full time position (so $40K+ one would assume).
So she cut her pay by 10% but cut her workload by a lot more when she created the administrator position and paid them more than her 10% cut.

Hear what Jonze is saying. Palin claims to have lowered her salary, but her point is that she cut costs.
In hiring a city manager to actually do most of the work of running the city, she both debunks her claim of executive experience as mayor *and* refutes her cost-cutting claims.
There is little about this candidate that isn't manufactured image.

Small town mayors don't mayor all the time and don't get paid like they do. They all have to work for their livings - unless their spouse is supporting them.
I've never known of a mayor who wasn't the mayor of a major city and therefore, a professional mayor, who didn't have a primary career other than being mayor.

According to a new study released today. The Wisconsin Advertising Project found that Oilbama went negative in 77 percent of his commercials last week while McCain’s were only 56 percent negative. Oilbama has no record to run on so all he can do is whine.

When your opponent is a lying liar who tells lies, it's kind of important to "go negative" on him. You see, the problem with McCain, and maybe you should read through this part slowly, isn't that he went "negative" at all, it's that practically every "negative" thing he's said has been an outright lie, as illustrated many many many many times by factcheck.org and numerous other major independent fact-checking organizations.
Also: "OilBama". That's cute, hadn't seen that before. How late did you stay up that night trying to come up with something clever like that?

Of course, even if the Wasilla City Council had forced her to accept a raise in pay at knifepoint, nothing was stopping her from writing a check to the city treasury for the difference, minus taxes.
I mean, if you really wanted to save the taxpayers money, so much so that you were willing to take a pay cut, that'd be the very first thing that came into your head. In fact, it'd be a no-brainer.
Possibly the implication here is that the Wasilla City Council had her at knifepoint for her entire tenure as mayor, making threatening slashing gestures every time she picked up her checkbook.

Talis Colberg -- the Palin-appointed Attorney General who was directly involved in efforts to pressure the former Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan over Trooper Mike Wooten -- said Tuesday that ten state employees would not honor subpoenas to testify in the case. Palin, of course, had originally pledged her office's full cooperation in the probe.
A group of five GOP legislators filed suit -- with the help of a right-wing Texas-based legal foundation -- to stop the investigation in its tracks.
The McCain campaign officially took charge of the effort, trotting out a hard-charging former federal prosecutor, Ed O'Callaghan, as its point-man on the issue.
And the ADN reported today that Palin's lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, is no longer being paid for by the state of Alaska, but could not say whether the McCain camp was helping to pay his bills.
But the GOP's hardball tactics could end up doing more harm than good, by adding to the suspicion that Palin has something to hide.
>>Republicans have in recent days been calling on Democratic senator Kim Elton to reconvene the bipartisan legislative council with ultimate responsibility for the probe. And yesterday Elton told the Associated Press that he may do so, allowing for a vote on whether to delay the investigation or replace Democratic senator Hollis French as its manager.
The council, which contains 10 Republicans and four Democrats, had voted unanimously in July to launch the investigation. But many observers believe that, now that the probe could play a role in the presidential race, the committee's GOP members will vote to shut it down if given a chance.

i work for a municipality here in the DFW metroplex. Our mayor and council are all part-timers and only make $10 per meeting. Meetings are twice a month. Out population is 40,000 and our yearly budget it like $50 million.
Not really complaining ,here, just kinda weird, that's all.

in the hannity interview Palin said that when Mccain called her, her family got together for a family conference and voted in favor of palin accepting the vp offer. however the reports at the time of her first public meeting with McCain stated that the kids had no idea where they were off to and the whole thing was a surprise to them..another lie?
September 18, 2008 4:46 PM | Reply | Permalink
That's right! She told Gibson she "didn't blink" then told Hannity she had a family vote before accepting, the press at the time of the announcement was that her kids didn't know until that morning, that they thought they were flying in for an anniversary celebration.
Is the woman incapable of telling the truth?

Palin actually got a defacto raise by hiring a city manager, which enabled her to get the same pay for performing much less work.

The numbers $64,000 or $68,000 don't matter that much to me. What surprises me is the amount. That much money for the mayor of a small Alaskan town whose city hall is little more than a store front? All this, and a town that needed to hire a city manager to handle the actual day to day running of this place. A mayor in an environment like that should be part time, and receiving little more than a small stipend.

ANYONE ho pays this woman do a job that requires cognitive thought is an idiot. It is apparent that the poor people of Alaska just wanted someone in there that was not associated with the known foul spots. They had no idea that they had handed the keys to the hen house to the rooster....or would that be the does to the moose slayer? and somewhere in there is a failed beauty queen looking for pay back...and the plot thickens.

Maybe when Palin is VP, she will hire a VP Administrator to do most of the work. And McCain can then hire a Presidential Administrator. Then they can continue doing what they do best: giving speeches to people who don't care if they are lying or not.

I'm surprised people are surprised when a politician is caught lying. Honestly most of those people Are very ambitious and may simply get caught up in the moment. Or They are just vindictive evil people, honestly who knows. If you hear something like this obvious Smear...... why not go out and check it out for yourselves. I am not educated in this subject enough to really comment. But I had to say something because honestly some of these comments simply hurt my brain.

Let me understand! McCain 72 wants use to trust the future of our country to a woman who was so overwhelmed by being the mayor of a town of 3000 People that she had to hire a profesional city manager for $50,000 a year.
Does this explain why Alaska needs all those ear marks. They get payed 3X what they are worth and they even have welfare mayors!

The part that stumps me is..........if you have had a job for 20 months and over 300 days during that time you stay in your home and charge the state......why would you need a chef? It seems silly.....unless the chef was willing to move it with ya, since you never stayed at the Mansion anyway.

what about the 312 nights she stayed in her Wasilla home . In year and a half it is 547 days and she only went to work 235 days and she billed the state 17000. Some lawmakers in Alaska said that they needed to read the Alaska Newspapers to find out what bills were veto by the governor because she was hard to reach.

Palin-McCain? This is what a conservative clitoral erection looks like, when she is inspired by the supporters' earlier departure to go on top of the old man. Can he handle her on the top?

I know for a fact from an Alaska state employee that the chef that was cut didn't result in savings because they had to use an expensive catering service for the many events that take place at the governor's mansion, daily and weekly. So it was purely symbolic, along with that stupid plane deal where she ended up selling it at a loss.

BTW , her statement regarding the COOK at the govenors residence..the cook was simply assigned to other duties but did fill in AS cook on various occasons but need to remember, often the Palin FAMILY stayed in WASILLA and Sara commuted to the office (it was her option to do so, and she was able to charge per diem expenses for her HOME residence and the cost of driving into the office as well as reimbursed for family members who were asked to perform "official " duties on behalf of the state...ahem !!
WHEN ARE THE PALIN TAX RECORDS TO BE RELEASED ? (and her medical records too, must make sure she too in good health in case there are undisclosed health issues /etc.....)

I like Palin. I am voting for McCain. Always wonder why a great majority of liberals can't express their opinion without profanity. Must be a lot of anger there now that Palin has changed the political landscape. McCain proved his loyalty to his country as a POW. Not sure the the opponent has much other than Hollywood looks and charisma. Not much meat in his character as yet. My opinion and given without profanity or anger.

The good thing about Palin, if you get to be a good friend, your guarantee a high profile job with no qualifications or experience. The problem is, you can always find some good even in bad situations...She did not really lie, she was just being creative...

so just for comparison, I looked up the city budget of the town I grew up in, a town of about 8,000 people in Maine...the entire executive department, that's the mayor and 4 council members, earn a combined $150,000. What the hell are they paying her to do up there? .... and just because it was approved in the budget doesn't mean it had to be final...that's why there's a revision process, she could have easily cut her pay and transfered the rest of the money to another fund if she had really wanted to.

Good! Palin deserves a raise for her hard work! Lets look into some dirt on Obama and his corruption w/Fannie & Freddie. HMMMMM...why don't we do that? Also his overpaid Hollyweirdos that he surrounds himself with that dont care about the middle class or lower class people! Obvioulsy they are after their own agenda. They are spoiled & over paid & why don't they "DO THE PATRIOTIC THING" AND donate 2 mill each to Fannie & Freddie. Our crisis that they seem to care about would be solved & they will be patriotic! You people just can't find any good dirt on Palin. Give it up & accept the fact that you should just get use to someone like her being a good role model for America and our children! You people are just so use to dirt & thrive on it!

Dang . . .most of ya'll don't really understand what you read, heheh. It's almost comical. Palin didn't set the salary. Is it too high? in my opinion, yes.
But her opinion is irrelevant if a City Council or whatever if the rules say she gets what the rules say. She did more than was required to lower it, and there is virtually NO moral standard on earth that would call for her to simply give away the disputed difference, NONE.
It would have been a nice gesture, but WHOLLY uneccessary by any moral standard whatsoever.
AGAIN, She tried to lower the salary. City council denied her request, despite her objections. Any moron trying to twist that into some sort of deception on her part is a genuine idiot. Please, correct me if I'm wrong here, I'll eat you alive point-on-point.
As for her purchasing a Suburban, that seems perfectly viable, considering she's a mayor in ALASKA . . .Duh. There are literally thousands of Mayors, small town and otherwise, driving vehicles paid for by taxpayer dollars. Have been for decades.
Arew you Palin-hatin Democrats really this nit-picky . . .to the point of absurdity.
Have to be . . .to buy into a cowardly twit with no spine and no plan like Obomba

While most of the pinheads here are Anti-Palin, simply showing theier dislike for her doesn't really violate the intent of the terms of service.
Heck ya can't really post about ANY aspect of politics without doing some of the listed violations, if taken too literally . . .and crying about Palin-haters IS taking the TOS too literally. She's a valid target of criticism, deserveed or not. Buckets of Case law in virtually every state say so too.
Now threats and such are another story . . .but if someone wants to claim Sara wears dirty checkered boxer shorts . . . defamatory . . .well yea . . .but a TOS violation, Nope. Just an asinine opinion, and this is America, where Democrats are free to believe other democrats and work themselves into a comical frenzy of defenseless nonsense.
