Biden: McCain "Dangerously Wrong" And "Divorced From Reality" On National Security

Joe Biden is set to jump back into one of his major roles as Obama's Veep candidate -- front man for attacking McCain on foreign policy -- by giving a speech in Ohio today designed to frame the national security discussion in advance of Friday's Obama-McCain debate on that topic.

According to the prepared remarks, Biden will unleash a slashing attack on McCain, painting him as reckless, hot-headed, out of touch with basic foreign policy realities, and hell bent on deepening the hole Bush has gotten America into:

[T]ime and again, on the most critical national security issues of our time, John McCain's judgment was wrong. Right after the terrorists attacked us on 9-11, John responded by urging that we consider attacking countries other than Afghanistan, including Iraq, Iran and Syria. In the run up to the war in Iraq, John insisted that we would be greeted as liberators... that we didn't need a lot of troops... that victory was imminent.

Then, he said he wasn't worried about Afghanistan... that we would "muddle through"... and he declared Afghanistan to be "a remarkable success. In John's judgment, there is nothing to talk about with Tehran. And he has one idea for dealing with Russia: kick it out of the Group of Eight nations."

[...]

John McCain continues to insist, against all the evidence and all the facts, that Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism... and not the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan where the people who actually attacked us on 9-11 reside and are regrouping."

"John is more than wrong -- he is dangerously wrong. On a question so basic, so fundamental, so critical to our nation's security, we can't afford a Commander-in Chief so divorced from reality and from America's most basic national interests."

More prepared excerpts after the jump.

"Later this week, Barack Obama and John McCain will come together to debate a president's most important responsibility: how to keep Americans safe and America secure. It will be their first presidential debate - but in many ways it's a debate we've been having as a nation for the past eight years. And the outcome of that debate has already been decided. Now, just as most Americans believe we are on the wrong track at home, so too have they come to the conclusion that we've been heading in the wrong direction abroad."

"Our country is less secure and more isolated than it has been at any time in recent history. This administration has dug America into a very deep hole around the world at a time our leadership is needed to meet the challenges of the 21st century."A central question for this election is which candidate will keep digging that hole...and which candidate will dig us out of that hole - indeed which candidate has the judgment and the vision to renew the promise of America in the world. It won't surprise you who I believe that candidate is: Barack Obama. But it is equally clear who that candidate is not: John McCain."

"... the policies he would pursue as president would be wrong for America - nowhere more so than with our security and standing in the world."

"This week, John talked about the judgment required to be Commander in Chief. He's right: nothing is more important than judgment. But time and again, on the most critical national security issues of our time, John McCain's judgment was wrong.

"In John's judgment, it is not the federal government's responsibility to protect us here at home. He voted again and again against fully funding cops and firefighters... against interoperable communications so that our first responders can talk to each other... against screening more cargo on planes and ships... against better security for our tunnels, trains, ports and chemical plants. It is John's judgment that six years into the war in Iraq, we should keep spending $10 billion a month... indefinitely... at a time Iraq is running an $80 billion surplus."

"And John McCain continues to insist, against all the evidence and all the facts, that Iraq is the central front in the war on terrorism... and not the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan where the people who actually attacked us on 9-11 reside and are regrouping."

"John is more than wrong -- he is dangerously wrong. On a question so basic, so fundamental, so critical to our nation's security, we can't afford a Commander-in Chief so divorced from reality and from America's most basic national interests."

"Time and again, Barack Obama has demonstrated the judgment we need in our next president... and the vision to see over the horizon."

"Seven years ago, Barack Obama opposed one of the most disastrous decisions in the history of American foreign policy: the diversion of our military might, our resources and focus from Afghanistan to Iraq. He was profoundly right. Now, he is right again: Barack Obama will end the war in Iraq responsibly. He will be as careful getting out as George Bush and John McCain were careless getting in. He knows we should not keep spending $10 billion a month indefinitely while the Iraqis are running a $79 billion surplus - which is why he will start to shift responsibility to the Iraqis...bring our combat brigades home over a period of 16 months... lead a diplomatic surge with the world's great powers and Iraq's neighbors to press for a political power sharing agreement... and keep a residual force in Iraq to destroy any remaining terrorists, train Iraqis and protect our personnel."

"Barack Obama understands what John McCain does not: the next President must be more than the Commander-in-Chief for Iraq. He must be Commander-in-Chief for America's security around the world."

"Mark my words: if, God forbid, there is another major attack on America, it will not come from Iraq. It will almost certainly come from the Afghanistan-Pakistan border - where the Bush/McCain approach let down our guard and let our enemies off the hook."

And unlike John McCain - who opposed Barack Obama's call to take out the high-level terrorist targets in Pakistan and called it "bombing our ally" - we will not tolerate a terrorist sanctuary in Pakistan. If Pakistan cannot or will not act, we will take out high-level terrorist targets like bin Laden if we have them in our sights."

"Barack Obama has been clear: no country poses a greater security challenge to the United States, Israel and our allies than Iran. Under the policies George Bush has pursued and John McCain would continue, Iran, not freedom, has been on the march. Iran is much closer to the bomb; its influence in Iraq is expanding; its terrorist proxy Hezbollah is ascendant in Lebanon; its ally, Hamas controls Gaza and launches rockets at Israel. Beyond bluster, what would John McCain actually do about these dangers? He doesn't say."

"The worst nightmare for a regime that thrives on isolation and tension is an America ready, willing and able to engage. Since when has talking removed the word "no" from our vocabulary? It's amazing how little faith John McCain has in himself and in America."

"So ask yourself: based on the judgments they have made and the policies they have proposed, which candidate is more likely as president to end the war in Iraq responsibly... to focus America's full might on Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan... to unite our allies in dealing effectively with Iran and Russia...to renew the promise of America in the world? The answer is clear."

"There's a short list of the forces shaping the 21st Century. No one country can control these forces, but more than any other country, we have an ability to affect them - if we use the totality of our strength. That means maintaining the finest fighting force in the world - not pushing it to the breaking point... rebuilding our alliances, partnerships and international institutions - not disparaging them... strengthening our diplomacy -- not disdaining it... and using our economic might, not putting it in jeopardy."

"Barack Obama understands that strength and wisdom go hand in hand... that the power of our example is as important and the example of our power... and that its only leadership when others join us in the struggle for freedom, security, prosperity, and progress. Barack Obama will keep our citizens safe. He will keep our country secure. And he will answer the yearning, at home and around the world, for an American foreign policy that is once again as good and strong as the American people."

Good, Joe! Tell them the truth and make them believe it's hell!

Ah, you beat me to it.

user-pic

Yes, I REALLY like this pro-active framing of the national security issue prior to the Fri debate. Excellent strategy.

user-pic

...it is notable and admirable that The Truth has become a campaign strategy for Obama/Biden.

The Lie strategy utilized by the McCainites needed some sort of offset...

Divorced From Reality = Nightly Ambien Cocktail

McCain has been wandering around the last couple weeks looking very much his age. I like hitting him on foreign policy before the big debate. That'll work.

Pufferfish

user-pic

Soften him up, Joe, before the debate!

user-pic

Especially since the debate is after his bedtime!

Most of us know it, but the bobblehead pundits and NewsModels won't say it - The Maverick is showing definite signs of dementia. I'll bet he'll be diagnosed with Alzheimers within the next 24 months. He looks and acts like St Ronnie Raygun in his second term.

Last Sunday morning, Sam Donaldson said "age is back on the table."

Divorced from reality, out of touch -- let's drive this home again and again! Everyone should check out these videos that popped up on HuffPo and forward them to anyone earning under 100k a year who thinks John McCain has any idea what their world is actually like.

Give 'em hell, Joe!

This is precisely why Biden is worth it, gaffes and all.

Hell, "...in spite of his gaffes"? Shit, he's perfect, BECAUSE of his gaffes. Anyone who listens to Joe Biden for 5 minutes knows that he's no bullshitter, and they love that. People HATE politicians who carefully meter and temper every goddamn word they utter. Prince George isn't despised for his gaffes, never has been.

I think he's despised for his gaffes in addition to everything else.

user-pic

I wouldn't go so far as to say he is despised. That's an extreme and arguably ridiculous position.

However, the gaffes certainly make him 'less perfect' in terms of creating unneccessary distraction and unpredictable, which makes those without true leadership, confidence and assurance unwilling to capitalize on Joe's indisputable strenghts when it comes to foreign affairs.

Go Joe! Go Obama for being a strong enough individual to know he can handle whatever gaffes may come based on Joe's overarching strengths.

Umm. I meant, Georgy-boy is despised. You knew that, right?

Well, have you ever noticed that when you decide you hate somebody, you begin to hate them for things that weren't even on your mind when you first realized you hated them? What I meant above was that George Bush, though he is most certainly despised by the majority of Americans at this time, I don't think it has anything to do with his gaffes as much as the mess his administration has created for our country in every area you can name. But, I will concede that his lying, gaffe-filled, mealy-mouthed, false-folksiness probably grates on just about everyone now.

You have to agree though that late night comedy has never been better than during the Bush administration.

roger that

Bingo.

And the more he frames the debate over foreign policy, the better.

Kick his ASS, Joe!!

No quarter given, no punches pulled!

user-pic

Dangerously mcWrong!

I second hyperRevue.

Meanwhile Palin is doing photo-ops at the UN and pissing off the press.

LOL, so true.

user-pic

Speed Dating Sarah!

user-pic

Priceless!
The only reason they met with her is because they know Bu$h still doles out their weekly allowance.

user-pic

I'd love to see the list of those who turned down a Speed Date!

user-pic

Spain's Prime Minister probably tops that list...

Spain - those dangerous Marxists from Latin America.

I can't wait for the VP debate. It's gonna be like the varsity football team playing scrimmage against kindergarten recess.

user-pic

See, here's where Biden will beat SP:

New word, SP: "interoperable communications." Biden knows it and you don't.

They must be drilling the Dame like crazy to try and get her to pronounce the words, let alone fling them around in some likely context.... In what context?

user-pic

To SP: Drill, baby, drill!

Well, she can throw out the translation of Karzai's son Mirwais as meaning 'The Light of the House.' I bet Biden didn't know that.

user-pic

That's too many words for her to remember!

Great. All Palin needs is more weird baby name ideas.

9 months from today: Light House Palin is born.

hahahaha..... laughed so hard the dogs started barking.

user-pic

There was a great post by WilliamOckham over at Firedoglake about how her recent babbling about energy (an area where McCain claims she's an "expert") was pretty clearly based on a beginner's briefing on the subject.

"She knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America." -- John McCain on Sarah Palin

I just wanted to bring in the actual quote because I believe it to be maybe the most ridiculous assertion of the campaign so far. And that's saying a lot.

Biden is gonna FEILD DRESS THAT MOOSE right before our eyes.

Are Marlon Perkins and his trusty abuse absorbing sidekick Jim still alive? If so, THEY should be the ones moderating the VP debate!!!!

If Joe has one gaffe during the debate, just one, that will be the focal point for the press to declare a Palin victory.

I think there is a difference between Biden gaffes and Palin gaffes.

Look at the Biden gaffes that Fux News keeps:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,426781,00.html
None seem to be that major to me.

Then think about Palins:
1) War with Russia
2) Not knowing what Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac do but still acting like you do know.
3) Not being able to talk to the media

And still, even on top of this, not sure if the republicans can really hit Biden on gaffes due to the current Republican president. He hasn't exactly been gaffe free...

Palin's biggest gaffe, that confirms she's a kool-aid drinking Zom-Bush was when she related 9/11 to the War in Iraq as her son shipped off with his military unit.

Can someone be called a good mother when she sends her son off to war and has no understanding as to why?

Love this particular paragraph.

Tough on terror vs. wrong on terror. This is killer.

user-pic

ooooooo.....now this is delicious!!

"tough on terror vs. wrong on terror'

I like that a lot. It is reminiscent of Obama's line in the primary:

It's not enough to be ready to lead on day one, you need to be right from day one!!

hahahaha...loved that line...like the terror one too!

This support for what is actually current policy is a very important point to make - because Bush is trying mightily to take out bin Laden, for the first time (why else all the incursions into Pakistan?). If he does, Obama gets to take some credit for what will, in every other respect, be likely to accrue to McCain's benefit should it happen before election day.

I wish I could express how strongly I agree with this comment. There is actually a window here to seriously minimize (though not eliminate) the political fallout of a bin Laden take-out prior to the election. And I think the Obama campaign is positioning itself just in case.

user-pic

Yet another Obama-Biden lie designed to puff up McInsane:

There is no, nada, none, zero, zip proof that McInsane has ever even met reality. How could the man with shark eyes be divorced from reality if he was never married to it?

It's amazing how little faith John McCain has in himself and in America

Ow! That's got to sting. I'm sure Johnny Mac's temperature will rise a few degrees after hearing that.

But if he pivots to address this then he takes his eye of the economy. At this time he can't afford voters perceiving him focused on foreign policy when they want him to be focused on the economy. He'll have to wait til the debate, and then let it spew. Should make for some entertaining tv.

This is what happens when you have a VP that can hit like hell and a VP that is an Achilles Heel.

John McCain is having to do the work of 3. Himself, a VP and covering for a bad VP pick.

Hitting the VP back would typically be the VP's role, but the pitbull is still on a leash in the kennel.

Palin's running for herself, Biden's running to support Obama. When McCain loses, she inserts herself into the national eye for the next four years and she will run for President without Grandpa holding her back.

Palin 2012.

*shudders*

user-pic

I'm pleased to see this happening, right before the debates.

I found this:

McCain's advantages on national security issues have also been blunted. Two weeks ago, when those surveyed were asked who they trusted to deal with a major unexpected crisis, McCain led 54 percent to 37 percent. That lead is gone.

Similarly, McCain's once-sizable advantage in dealing with the battle against terrorism has all but disappeared. There were also big shifts toward Obama on handling Iraq and international affairs more broadly.

in the Washington Post/ABC Poll to be deeply interesting. Biden's speech is well-timed in light of this, and Palin looks like a lightweight piece of eye candy with her speed-dating of foreign leaders.

I agree (surprisingly) with Campbell Brown on this. The McCain's campaign treatment of Sarah Palin is deeply sexist and disrespectful. Free Sarah Palin!

user-pic

I completely disagree with Campbell Brown. There is nothing sexist about keeping Palin underwraps, and anyone who has heard her speak knows that.
She is being protected from herself. She knows nothing about a vast array of national issues.

I frankly beleive it is devious of Campbell to suggest that it is sexist as a way to force the issue which we all know is the mcCain's unwillingness to display Palin's gross incompetence for the nation to see!!

Sexism my ass.

That women is a blizzard of incomprehensible words also known as baffling 'em with bullshyt when you can't dazzle 'em with brillance.

You say devious, I say a brilliant bit of ju-jitsu on the part of Campbell Brown to put the McCain campaign on the defense, when they've attempted to paint the media as the bad guys.

Hey Hacktacular, is that Les Nessman?

I agree with Hacktacular, and I think you miss the whole point of what Campbell did. I'd say what she did is artful; it doesn't matter if it's sexism or not. The point is Campbell's comment effectively help deprive the McCain camp of the sexism card by calling on them for their treatment of Palin.

user-pic

Agree with all points; great comment.

user-pic

Finally Biden is doing what he SHOULD be doing, attacking McCain on foreign policy.

Paulson in a nut shell:

"Give me 700 Billion now, and I will then hire no bid consultants to tell me how I should spend it"

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/09/no-one-has-said-that-the-pauls.php

Don't forget.....Paulson is going to be one of the consultants!

user-pic

One of the consultants?

Unless they change section 8 he will be the sole consultant!

I am shocked that there is not more talk about making Paulson a financial czar.

Which in turn means the next President will become a financial and war czar without the need of congress for either of those extremely powerful factions of our government.

This is nothing but more consolidation of power in the executive branch.

user-pic

Biden says "ladies and gentlemen" more than Daniel Plainview.

It ought to be renamed the "Paulson Guaranteed Employment Act of 2008".

user-pic

I saw Biden in Woodbridge, Virginia yesterday.

One comment he made, paraphrasing here, "At 9 a.m. last Monday, John McCain said the fundamentals of our economy are strong. At 11 a.m., he said it was an economy in crisis."

And then Biden said, "That's what we Catholics call an ephinany."

user-pic

I meant,

"That's what we Catholics call an epiphany."

This was a very good speech. I'm sure the Palin people were watching and getting sinking feelings in the pit of their collective stomachs. FoxNews carried it from start to finish with no interruption or even any crawls..shocking! It was the only time I stayed on Fox for more than a few seconds.

I expect some serious swiftboating to begin on Biden.

Good job, Biden. Keep making those points to set the stage for Obama this Friday.

We Americans need a strong and proactive congress in both houses in order to survive the finacial meltdown that is occurring. Unfortunately, we have Harry already-lost-war-Reid, Sandra I-got-my-millions Pelosi, and Charles tax-you-not-me Rangel at the helm of congress. Fortunately, we can change that this November.
To avoid a complete collapse of the US economy, Americans need to throw this congress out this election cycle. Look what has happened on their watch! Bush-haters can be sure he will be gone ASAP. It is truly frightening to imagine the most socialist big-spending congress of modern times trying to revive a capitalist economy while led by a radical left-wing civil rights activist named Barack Hussein Obama....
http://www.examiner.com/x-852-Atlanta-Civics-Examiner

You're right! It's gonna be GREAT!!!

Biden of course sounds tough and his statements are accurate but the speech was the same old stuff that's come from the campaign for months. And of course the war against terror is crucial. But the Bush administration has neglected our own hemisphere its entire time in office.

China and Russia are not neglecting Latin/South American countries. Putin has specifically expressed a desire to renew relations with Cuba. And then this little news from yesterday.

"Russia is sending a squadron of Navy vessels to Venezuela, including a nuclear powered guided missile cruiser ... Stung by the West’s strong condemnation of Russia’s actions in last month’s war with Georgia, Moscow appears to have redoubled its efforts to strengthen ties with Venezuela, Cuba and other Latin American countries, in moves reminiscent of the Soviet Union’s proxy battles with the United States in the region during the Cold War." It's probably just gamesmenship but the possibility of mcsenile reacting to this if he was actually elected is really quite frightening.

I would think Biden could have put in just one little paragraph about improving communications with Cuba, 90 miles from our shore - and focusing more diplomatic efforts on the rest of Latin/South America. This doesn't have to scare people.

Biden did also not speak about how this economic crisis is so related to our national security as foreign governments such as China ($519 billion at the end of July per US Treasury), the mideast oil emirates (such as Abu Dhabi), hold so much US debt.

I just think the speech was "old news". Couldn't they show a little more strategic thinking or does that just shake things up too much for the typical narrow minded voter. I don't know.

It has to come in pieces. Until the dems take back foreign policy from the GOP in an honest election, the country isn't ready for it.

Think of how entrenched Peter Pace-type crusaders now infect the armed services...think of the time they have had in 8 years to practice military leadership of the military, instead of civilian leadership of the military...and think about how none of those people will be leaving if Obama becomes president.

Lisast:
I thought the speech was great. When many voters can barely comprehend what's going on now in Iraq and Afghanistan and Iraq, why confuse them by bringing up South America and Cuba? The goal is to win the election, not a graduate-level debate at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

Interestingly in his bloviated diatribe, Biden doesn't say what he would do.
"It's amazing how little faith John McCain has in himself and in America."
And that there is the statement that reveals Biden's as bogus.

Bearing incisors and spitting syllables does not make a leader. it just shows aggressive defensiveness.

user-pic
Bearing incisors and spitting syllables does not make a leader. it just shows aggressive defensiveness.

Tell that to your buddy McCain.

(Hell, to Bush too, while you're at it.)

user-pic

I am still looking for the source of McCain's foreign policy and national security experience and have not found one committee he's sat on or chaired in his entire congressional career thst has anything to do with either.

So far the only source of McCain's experience seems to be McCain's mouth.

So, realistically, Obama has been on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for four years. That gives him four years more real life foreign policy experience than McCain.

My conclusion is that McCain has FP/NS experience only because he says so. At least that's what a lot of people believe.

I guess in your mind being co-chair of the Armed Services Committee doesn't count. Nor does actually serving abroad in the military.

Back into your hole.

user-pic

@fogu2

I guess in your mind being co-chair of the Armed Services Committee doesn't count. Nor does actually serving abroad in the military.

No it doesn't. The Armed Services Committee is responsible for making certain that men and women of the military have everything they need to do their jobs (which they are outstanding at). And no, serving abroad in the military doesn't cut it. The US Constitution places the military under civiliian control for a reason (to prevent a military takeover and dictatorship, in case you were puzzled). It also does not require that a president has to have any military experience whatsoever.

And where was the reverence for service abroad in 2004?

So go crawl back up your troll master's ass.

If McCain's so smart how come he still calls the Czech Republic Czechloslovakia? Why does he believe Iraq and Pakistan share a border? Why does he want to stay in Iraq 100 years? Why is he the lone voice (along with maybe Paul Wolfowitz) who doesn't subscribe to an exit strategy in Iraq? You cannot substitute anger and criticism for judgment either for yourself or McCain.

Biden who? He doesn't get press unless he's making another embarrassing gaffe.

user-pic

Huh?

This will get less media play than when he makes a gaffe (like the McCain ad thing or clean coal etc). They are not paying much attention to Biden unless he makes a mistake, and then they are all over it.

And I'd rather Biden gave this speech after the foreign policy debate (to show Obama's leading the policy from the top of the ticket). Plus right now it's all about the economy. This is going to be a side mention at most on the news broadcasts for the undecided voters who get most of their news there.

In my opinion, an excellent speech as far as it goes, both on the substantive content and the appropriately strong criticisms of McCain.

Unfortunately, however, Biden did not even mention the single most important threat to national security, namely anthropogenic global warming and consequent climate change. Global warming is an existential threat, not only to the USA, but to human civilization. Terrorism is trivial in comparison.

The fact is that our most crucial and urgent national security imperative must be a rapid phaseout of ALL fossil fuel use, and an equally rapid transition to an energy economy based on harvesting clean, abundant, endless, FREE solar and wind energy.

That would not only enable us to eliminate the CO2 emissions that are heating up the planet and acidifying the oceans, but would eliminate the "need" to seek military domination of the world's dwindling supplies of fossil fuels.

Imagine a world in which the USA, instead of spending over half a trillion dollars every year on the military, spent an equal amount disseminating wind and solar energy technologies and sustainable organic agriculture techniques to the world. A world where most everyone has lots of good wholesome food to eat and plenty of low-cost or no-cost electricity would be a more peaceful and secure world.

did any of you see the ridiculous piece CNN did on Biden? Basically, "how could Biden criticize Palin on the bridge to nowhere! He too has gotten an earmark for a bridge!"

NVM that every state in the country got money for their infrastructure, most people around the country agree bridges need to be taken care of (btw, the bridge in question was just going to be repaired, not built to a community of 700 people).

It was the epitomy of how bad TV reporting is. All they care about is balance, not accuracy.

Just read it. Shallow and shameful. "Quick! Get something negative on Obama and Biden! Don't let the McCain folks call us out again!"

Funny how the Hillary dead-enders are still at it.

Still at what?

Joe Biden said John McCain is divorced from reality. Not yet. He's just dating a new unreality and leaving the old reality to take care of the kids.

That's Just What I Said

user-pic

Good to see.
Needs to be said.

McCain-Palin fans will be upset at the failure of Joe Biden to mention 'lipstick', so I expect a kerfuffle over some triviality to distract from Biden's cogent, much-needed points.

You forgot the Bush Doctrine, sold the plane on E-Bay for a profit and Thanks but No Thanks for the Bridge to Nowhere.

WOW - this rant from the guy who said after his presidential campaign crumbled, he would be honored to run with John McCain.
Imagine Biden's speech against Obama had he been on the McCain team. What a political HACK.
ONE SIDED reconstructionist history.

Just finished his autobiography this morning: Promises to Keep. Joe Biden is the foreign relations dream VP. What a guy!!
