Associated Press To The Rescue! Palin Was Thoroughly Vetted, After All!
Ron Fournier, send in the cavalry!
On a day when The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, and McClatchy all weighed in with tough pieces on the weak vetting of Sarah Palin, the Associated Press rides to the rescue with a piece reporting that Palin was in fact thoroughly vetted after all.
The AP's source for this revelation? Why, the guy who was in charge of the vetting for McCain, lawyer Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr. You'll be surprised to hear that he says he did a very thorough job.
The AP piece also has this curious passage, in which the lawyer says Palin had disclosed Bristol's pregnancy to him...
Culvahouse then conducted a nearly three-hour interview. He said the first thing Palin volunteered was that her daughter was pregnant, and she also quickly disclosed her husband's two-decade-old DUI arrest.
Of course, yesterday, McCain advisers refused to say whether McCain had known of the pregnancy before picking Palin as Veep. So, if it's true that Palin disclosed it to McCain's chief vetter, one of the following must also be true:
1) McCain did know about the pregnancy before he picked Palin, but McCain aides for some reason declined to disclose this yesterday.
2) McCain's chief vetter did learn of the pregnancy before McCain picked Palin, but no one told McCain about it.
3) McCain's chief vetter isn't telling the truth.
Take your pick.

The same AP that edited out McCain's infamous "excellent question" response to "How do we beat the bitch?"
Yep, Ron Fournier And Nedra Pickler and Co. stick up for their team.

What a shocker. The story was written by Liz Sidoti, the infamous AP reporter who has a history of negative Obama stories, who also presented McCain with a box of donuts (with sprinkles of course)and coffee at an event for newspapers editors, the same event in which the head of the AP reporter referred to Obama as 'Osama'.

The AP really has lost any sense of objectivity during this campaign. They're just complete shills for the McCain camp.

Not only that, but the AP is treating it as a corporate PR issue, circling the wagons around Ron Fournier and actively working to spin all of the legitimate issues raised about him, rather than actually dealing with any of the criticism.
If AP wants to be just another corporation, rather than a legitimate media outlet, that's its prerogative, but you would think someone there would realize that failing to answer legitimate questions about Fournier's impartiality will severely damage the value of the brand. It ignores its critics at its own peril. Is Fournier really worth it?

Oh, this is way tooooo funny. Palin is the gift that keeps on giving. Maybe TPM, should have continuous updates on the facts coming out and the meltdown. Her first official act as mayor of a town of 8500, she required the town staff, all 5 of them, to resign in a loyalty test. Unbelievable. This is just way, way too funny. Now apparently reporters will be combing all over the metropolis of alaska to get the latest scoop on the looney toon. I am totally laughing my a** off, this is too funny.

I think Laura McCann will run into big obstacles since McCain has sent up a team of lawyers to post-vet Palin. The lawyers are more likely to prevent information from coming out of Alaska than to seek and expose information. Palin's theme song is "Send me lawyers, guns and money" as someone else posted last night.
Palin is still governor of Alaska and therefore she is still in place to practice her abuse of power and vindictiveness.

Hmm . . . Rachel Paulose, Monica Goodling, and now Sarah Palin. Is anyone else detecting a theme here? Although I suppose it's understandable, what with the traditional role of women in the Republicans' view of the world.

I honestly cannot believe we're still flogging this non-issue issue.
The latest polls suggest what the strategy should be: McCain/Palin alienate independents and women because they are RIGHT-WING on the issues and not at all moderate.
That's the message, along with Clinton's "America in trouble on two fronts".
September 2, 2008 11:10 AM | Reply | Permalink
It really isn't a non-issue, concerning the vetting, because of all the garbage coming out. It reflects terribly on mcbush and it reveals that it was a shoot from the hip, erratic act. What better evidence to show mcbush should not be president, notwithstanding the other points that you raise?

You think that McCain selecting a person to become the President who A) he personally did not know and B) he did not bother to vet is a non-issue? Think about it for a moment.
Everything else stems from that. Even your contention that the problem really is her extremist policies stems from the issue that McCain was reckless and irresponsible in his choice (we can probably assume that he was not intentionally trying to drive his poll numbers down).

Unsurprised
"No Surprises From Palin, McCain Team Says"-Washington Post
Senior McCain officials described themselves as "unsurprised" today as huge storms of locusts flew from Wasilla, Alaska and descended upon McCain campaign headquarters. "Locusts were vetted. Locusts were vetted in the vet" said one campaign official, who spoke without attribution out of concern that he would be devoured by a verminous flying cloud. The campaign also said that they were nonplussed by reports that the rivers were running black with ashes, that family pets were begin to speak in human voices, declaiming "Release Sarah!", and that a huge spreading stain was beginning to blot out the Northern sun. "Vetted" said the campaign.
"There are exciting new studies that show that locusts can be used as a source of biodegradable fuel" said Newt Gingrich, as he hunkered down to avoid the black marble obelisks falling from the sky around him. "Palin, if she can be said to have played a role in bringing about these new biofuel resources, should be praised for her innovative role in the solution to our future energy demands".
"These events firmly demonstrate Palin's deep connection to traditional modes of traditional expression, in traditional forms, traditionally." said William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard. "Experience, in the face of these more traditional events, is overrated..." continued Kristol, before ending the interview to wrap himself head-to-toe in mosquito netting and swallowing a bitter tasting anti-malarial drug, the taste of which, as his lips contorted, he noted to be "surprisingly refreshing."
Palin's schedule in the upcoming days of the Republican National Convention has been cut short due to, as one McCain communications aide reported, a desire not to "let the magic out of the bottle too quickly." "Sarah is a precious resource, who each moment brings a new vitality and energy to every worker on the campaign" said the aide, while fighting to remove the nest of serpents which had suddenly materialized on the floor beneath him, and were now slowly ascending his legs. "Do these bite, or just slink?" asked the aide, who spoke on conditions of anonymity so as not to provoke or otherwise alienate the reptiles.
Meanwhile, as the heavens darkened, the seas began to boil, and a voice tore through the clouds shouting, in deep, stentorian tones to one and all: "It was a Mistake!", campaign offices described themselves as "unperturbed". "Serpents materializing, house pets suddenly called to vocal advocacy, Celestial callings to revise and repent...Vetted" said the spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was turning into a pillar of salt. "Everything that was vetted was vetted in the vet."

Palin's career isn't about values and ethics. It's about power, ambition, drive, competitiveness. Everything she's achieved has been preceded by a positioning designed to divide and conquer. She became mayor by going highly partisan, with state GOP backing, in a town that had not been partisan. She got the governership by figuring out anti-corruption was the way to go. And yet she is as corrupt as they come. She lies about or covers up past activities (bridge to nowhere, earmarks, Ted Stevens 527, etc.) She made sure she gave that speech in TX at 7+ mos. pregnant, with amniotic fluid dripping, because she was not going to miss that. All about raising her profile. She apparently didn't tell her kids what was up with the VP slot until they flying out of state. Oh, Bristol, honey, we're going to have to go public with your pregnancy, but why don't we hide your bump with Trig in the meantime.
She's Machiavelli in lipgloss.

Palin is getting torn down, and McCain along with her in the eyes of the public. And with that, I think Obama needs to stay on the track he is on. The campaign need to really push the idea that these people are far right, more so than Bush at this point in 2000. Not more of the same: far, far worse. Stay away from Palin, she will drive herself down.
September 2, 2008 11:18 AM | Reply | Permalink
Talking about Bristol's pregnancy may now be one of the third rails of politics, but I do have some questions:
If the Palins were so proud of their daughter's decision, why did it take internet rumors to disclose Bristol's pregnancy? Furthermore, why did the proud parents take pains to hide their daughter's pregnancy during the family's initial appearances? (Look at how Bristol uses a white blanket to cover her front during her Mom's VP introduction.)
Doesn't the Palin's call for privacy implicitly acknowledge some embarrassment about Bristol's situation?
Anyway...
I do think that McCain's vetting of Palin was not thorough. According to the NYT and other sources, the pick was not made until last Thursday, after it became clear that a Lieberman selection would have caused friction within the Rep base.
Finally, McCain's selection calls McCain's decision making process into question. Do we want a President who makes decisions shooting from the hip, or someone who carefully considers options?

I re-read Palin's statement, and she said Bristol planned on marrying the father. I was always for Traitor Joe, but there's something else wrong here. It *can't* be that the whole list consisted of that filthy, boorish lout alone, eh? There must be a reason for this "rush." Somebody else backed out or became unavailable as well, maybe more than one person.

In my crazy argument world, I would also contend that Palin was not a pick that reflects McCain's supposed maverick streak.
If McCain were truly the maverick that he sees himself as, he would have stuck to his guns and picked Lieberman. Instead, McCain was forced by the Republican base to select someone of whom they would approve. In other words, he was forced into making an anti-maverick (and controversial) choice.

More possibilities:
4. McCain did know of a pregnancy, but not the one the reporters were asking about.
5. When McCain picked Sarah Palin, the pregnancy did not yet exist because Karl Rove hadn't come up with the idea.

The minor point is how well she was vetted---not very. The major point is that McCain made a conscious calculation to capitulate to the right wing of his party.
Obama negotiated a very spectacular role for the Clintons at his convention, but remained steadfast in choosing the vp he thought was best.
McCain, foolishly, caved in.

Is anybody aware of any anti-Palin ads run by the Dems, or anybody else for that matter, running in any state?
The image of Palin in the minds of many Americans is fluid at the moment. Plenty of information has come out that completely undercuts her glossy image as a "reformer" and enemy of earmarks (the WaPo has a good article on that today), and as Lalo notes, illustrates what a fringe loon she is. NOW is the time for the Obama campaign to aggressively attack Palin (and McCain) on all aspects of her record. NOW is the time to define her, not next week.
If the Obama campaign dithers, it will give the McCainiacs time to regroup and develop the new round of crazy attack ads that they'll be leveling at Biden and Obama, who will then have to spend days or weeks refuting and defending, instead of driving the narrative on Palin and McCain themselves.

And you live down there, so you must have your finger on the pulse.

Ms. Hussein, I think it's a bit beyond warts, though, don't you? There'll be Talibangenicals and airheads ("Actually I kind of like her!") who go with it, but I see them as outnumbered.

Oh, yeah, it's not just warts, it's abcesses, gangrene, all kinds of gross things.
And you and Tena are making me feel better about the whole thing. Nails chewed off last night though, damn it, I'd look like crap next to Snowmobile Barbie (another good one!)

Did he include the Eagle Forum questionnaire as part of this 'thorough vetting' process?

How's it looking at Intrade about how soon Palin will decide to drop out to "spend more time with her family"?

I suspect the Republicans are furiously "vetting" Joe Biden right now to find ANYTHING to make a scandal out of to take the heat off Palin. I see that as their only real alternative. I won't be surprised if, at any moment, we start hearing about Biden...and of course the Media will gobble it up.

Well d'uh - but you have to know they already have been doing that. However, since Joe has been in public life since forever and I've never heard one rumor about him- well, I wish GOP lots of luck.

Well, they've got The Great Plagiarism Scandal. But yeah, I think that rather supports your point than otherwise.

To guard against a coup de GOP, McCain can only dump her now after he's officially nominated. When is that supposed to take place again? Today or tomorrow? If it's before her speech, then I think she's replaced tomorrow morning.

People are not attacking Palin's daughter, they are rightly pointing out the hypocrisy of a Republican establishment that has advanced the politics of character assassination and undermined the Freedom of Religion in pursuit of power. The internet should be replete with apologies from Republicans for supporting right-wing media and party wackos who bludgeon and litmus test fellow Americans with some Biblical passages when politically expedient, while not doing so with other passages like those on fidelity, fornication, shell fish, swine, and indentured servitude. Christian Fundamentalists in the Republican Party and Media that want to impose their particular religious interpretations on others can't have it both ways:
Either, a pregnancy is a personal matter SEPARATE from government (as most open minded freedom loving Americans argue), or it isn't.
Christian Fundamentalists want to impose non-medical/religious-only beliefs on people outside of their church in a nation where your pledge of allegiance means you swear not to do that. By advocating the enforcement of her spirituality into law, Palin invited us to do something we shouldn't have to: to examine the consequences of the imposition of Palin's religious beliefs on those of us who don't share them. Hypocrites deserve worse than being put in front of a mirror that reflects the "family values"/"I'm more Christian than you" that were used to distract the nation from a rational and substantiated discussion on issues that are most deserving of our attention.
Christ was the first to advocate a separation of church and state when he declared "Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's" (Matthew 22:21, see also John 18:36). Don't you dare use him to hide your lack of integrity, self-reflection, and moral courage. Not even someone who Christian Fundamentalists believe is fit to run the country and pick Supreme Court justices; who embodies their "Christian Values"; is able to keep her adolescent daughter abstinent. If you don't want people to look at how well the politics that puts "abstinence-only education" ahead of adolescent welfare worked out for your daughter, do us all a favor, mind your own business and remember your oath to uphold the Constitution means real American patriots would sooner die than allow their or anyone else's religious-only beliefs to be forced onto others.

The AP deserves to be dismantled brick by brick, it is no longer a news organization but a hotbed of partisan hackery. Did I hear that Rupert Murdoch is now on the AP board?

Regarding vetting, has there been any info regarding the fact that Palin did not win Miss Congeniality at the Miss Wasilla 1984 beauty pageant? Here is the site which reported it:
http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/columnists.nsf/debpeterson/story/23D7A0CF8A2E3A61862574B50011DB30?OpenDocument
The article quotes the woman who cdlaims that she, and not Palin was Miss Congeniality.
This could easily be settled by looking at the official pageant results, but I cannot find them online.
Blatant resume padding is unacceptable under any circumstances.

A. B. Culvahouse, chair of McCain's VP search committee, is the managing partner at O'Melveny and Myers. O'Melveny's largest client is Exxon, and is currently engaged in a number of lawsuits against the state of Alaska involving north slope drilling and building a natural gas pipeline. Palin implemented regulations seeking to push Exxon to drill and build the pipeline, Exxon has been fighting her tooth and nail. Not sure if this connection means anything, but it sure is interesting.

Ha ha - I wonder if the "vetting" was a big FU to Palin over the lawsuit?
And why didn't anyone at the McCain campaign this this was a conflict of interest?
September 2, 2008 2:04 PM | Reply | Permalink
In short, McCain delegated his vetting of Palin to Exxon.
Figures.
I imagine most of the questions involved energy policy.
No time in three hours to get into abuse of power or Alaska secession.

Although I suppose it is understandable, given their traditional status in their male counterparts' world.

There is an interesting tidbit about Culvahouse on his wikipedia page. But it remains tantalyzing because the link to an old AP story is dead:

Fournier, as Washington bureau chief, is just the tip of the iceberg.
Just below the water line are Liz Sidoti (who wrote this puff piece), Nedra Pickler and Charles Babbington.
As a journalist, I used to have enormous respect for AP. Meat-and-potatoes, just-the-facts-mam reporting.
Now clearly something has gone wrong at the very highest levels of the organization, and the rot has spread.
Sidoti, for example, doesn't ask Culvahouse the obvious question: "That Alaska independence thing -- that didn't raise any red flags with you?"
Pathetic.

The question not asked:
When did Gov Palin learn of her daughter's pregnancy?
I'm speculating that Gov. Palin fully disclosed everything she knew at the time she was offered VP. She just didn't know, Bristol fessed up after the announcement. Remember, Bristol and the rest of the kids didnt' know why they were in Ohio; they thought it was a family celebration. She told her mom when she could and when it was too late.
Bristol is one of five kids of busy parents and if I'm not mistaken she lives and goes to school in Anchorage, and not in Wasilla with her folks.
Did anyone think she was pregnant when she stood on the dais with her family? She shielded her herself by holding Trig, but really how many people were watching and didn't notice.
This explains why this wasn't disclosed and
