Founder Of Group Palin Courted Professed "Hatred For The American Government"; Cursed "Damn Flag"
The founder of the Alaska Independence Party -- a group that has been courted over the years by Sarah Palin, and one her husband was a member of for roughly seven years -- once professed his "hatred for the American government" and cursed the American flag as a "damn flag."
The AIP founder, Joe Vogler, made the comments in 1991, in an interview that's now housed at the Oral History Program in the Rasmuson Library at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
"The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government," Vogler said in the interview, in which he talked extensively about his desire for Alaskan secession, the key goal of the AIP.
"And I won't be buried under their damn flag," Vogler continued in the interview, which also touched on his disappointment with the American judicial system. "I'll be buried in Dawson. And when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home."
At another point, Volger advocated renouncing allegiance to the United States. In the course of denouncing Federal regulation over land, he said:
"And then you get mad. And you say, the hell with them. And you renounce allegiance, and you pledge your efforts, your effects, your honor, your life to Alaska."
You can listen to audio of the relevant section of the Volger interview here. Bill Schneider, curator of oral history at the library, verified the authenticity of the interview and the quote to me a few moments ago.
Palin has courted the group over the years.
Three years after the controversial interview, in 1994, Palin attended the group's annual convention, according to witnesses who spoke to ABC News' Jake Tapper. The McCain campaign is disputing her presence there, but Tapper found two people to attest to it.
The McCain campaign today produced Palin's voting registration records, and said they proved she was never a member of the party.
But she has repeatedly reached out to the group. The McCain campaign has confirmed she visited the group's 2000 convention, and she addressed its convention this year, as an incumbent governor whose oath of office includes upholding the Constitution of the United States.
Palin's husband, Todd Palin, was a member of the party from 1995-2002 with a brief exception in 2000.
It's worth noting that Vogler isn't just some figure from ancient history. He is still being hailed on AIP's site this year, the same year Palin addressed the group's convention.
It's worth pondering how big a deal it would be if Obama had ever courted the support of a group whose head had said this kind of thing about America and her flag. Oh, wait...

Buh-bye now, Governor Palin. BUH-BYE!

I'm honestly not seeing it that way, and I hope I'm wrong. Did anyone watch the trainwreck that was every GOP pundit and operative falling all over themselves to prop this woman's "qualifications" while dumbing down Obama? I thought Pat Buchanan was going to mess himself referring to Obama continually as a "lightweight liberal" all the while making Sarah Palin seem like the celebrity the McCain campaign has been calling Obama out as.
I'm literally afraid that if McCain gets by and does wind up in office this November, we're one hearteat away from this woman being the leader of the free world. Talk about hyperbole. It's real, my friends. This is the big FU to the Dem party and make no mistake, the party is rallying - for whatever reason - behind this woman.
It simply doesn't get any more bizarre than this.

The best evidence of her affinity and felicitation to the AIP movement is the way that she handled her recent pregnancy after her water broke. She flew over 8 hours back to Alaska to ensure that her child would be a native born Alaskan - as her husband said, paraphrasing "fish pickers don't come from Texas."
Consider the movement: they obviously would have more affinity towards native born Alaskans and vice-versa. Transplants would obviously tend to value their U.S. citizenship more than native borns. So being native born is a positive marker and indication of affinity for the movement - important enough for Palin to take unnecessary risk with her pregnancy.
Actions speak louder than words. There's no denying these actions. If she's "country first" then that country is Alaska.

David Brooks was on MSNBC and he's clearly not impressed with Sarah Palin. He doesn't see the votes. He only sees the media going after her day after day, and therefore McCain. He sees the judgement and temperment arument having swung to Obama/Biden.

This was posted earlier. The problem I have is that she should be waiving the flag and all that other patriotic bs that the republicans require. Instead, she is giving a welcome message to a party that wants Alaska to secede from the United States in March of 2008?????? How on earth can you spin that one? WTF. I'd rather have someone who didn't wear a flag pin, than someone who wants to break up our country as President. I really don't get this one. MSNBC was playing it with kid gloves. Yup. Years ago, the front bell rang. A person showed me a Defense Dept Badge. Scared me to death! Till he explained he was doing a background check on my neighbor, a really good family man who flew for the National Guard, when not flying for a commercial airline. The one thing this Defense Dept guy seemed most concerned about was this: When I reported my neighbor was very conservative, he asked: "Would he seek to overthrow the government?" He needed assurance that the person he was investigating was trustworthy in that particular way.
So, yes, this latest Sarah revelation is a huge huge problem. It cuts to the heart not only of a security clearance, but it cuts to the heart of the Constitution, to the oath of office - to "protect" and "defend" the Constitution.
This group is way out there! Not acceptable to your normal, average American. Not normal for your average conservative family person. It will not play in the suburbs for sure!

it cuts...to the oath of office - to "protect" and "defend" the Constitution.
With respect to the oath of office, I believe W has issued a "speaking statement," the analog of a signing statement for spoken promises, which provides that his duty "to protect and defend" may not conflict with or supercede his fiduciary duty to his contributors to destroy the Constitution.
So, no worries there.

Actually, his conservative views have nothing to do with the question about wanting to overthrow the US government. Both my friends and I have gone through this process several times (they even ask this question on the SF-86 form you need to fill out) and this question each and every time.
They take this question very, very seriously. They once grilled me because of a blog post where I said I'm reconsidering my opposition to the 2nd Amendment because I thought that one day we may need those guns to protect us from our own government. We spent nearly 30 minutes discussing this. I can hardly be labeled a conservative either.

I'll ask this again: which is worse, that McCain didn't know any of this beforehand, or that he did thoroughly vet Palin -- as his campaign keeps insisting -- and still thought she was a good choice for VP? Seems to me they're digging themselves a deeper hole by trying to suggest that none of these revelations were important issues during the vetting process. Obama's camp ought to run with that.

I'm rolling in the aisles on these AIP quotes.
It's *so* much like a bizarro-world reversal of Rev. Wright. Instead of black liberation theology, you've got bearded Ice People wearing plaid shirts and suspenders.
I don't think this is a game-ender for Sarah Palin, though. Her connection to the group is debatable enough that she's going to manage to skate, I think. But it's definitely going to be a talking point for a few days, especially if we can get some decent video of a guy who looks like Red Green ranting about "god damn America!"

How can this not be fatal? They want alaska to secede from the union. Wasn't that the first issue the original republican party went to war over? Obviously, the republican party of today is nothing like the party of Lincoln or Roosevelt for that matter, but still, give me a break. I think it is huge. By the way, I particularly find it offensive when the republicans of today invoke Lincoln or Roosevelt. They are not even close to those great americans.
September 2, 2008 8:54 PM | Reply | Permalink
It's not fatal as long as most of the attention it's getting is here in Left Blogostan. The cable and broadcast infotainment industry ran loops of Jeremiah Wright constantly. Also, white folks just don't tend to be as scary to Mainstreamers as Rev. Wright and his flock. Eccentric at worst. When was the last time Timothy McVeigh came up in discussions of terrorism?

I've seen the videos, and they're pretty colorful. But addressing the group isn't quite the same thing as endorsing it, and though AIP claims her as a member, it sounds like McCain is going to just deny, deny, deny that she *was* ever a member. Todd was a member, but Todd ≠ Sarah.
It's messy, for sure, and I think the stories about AIP will contribute to the impression that this whole ticket is not quite ready for prime time.
I'm just saying that I don't see them ditching Palin. But then, I don't want them to ditch Palin! She's fun. And they're losing.

But along comes the Republican Party of 2008, and they're hooting and hollering... not for someone of Lincoln's caliber or vision, but for an honest to God secessionist! Man, oh, man have they lost their way. I can't believe they can even mouth the word "Lincoln" without being struck by the shame of what they've become.

Tonight on MSNBCs coverage they reported that the chairman of the AIP is now saying that Palin was never a member. I don't buy it because there is that video of the vice chairman calling her a former member and also the member that is referenced in Jake Tapper's blog post on it who states Palin was a member. They're going to try and side step this one. They have an attorney now representing Palin in the abuse of power investigation trying to argue that it isn't the AK legislature's jurisdiction. You've got a special counsel up there and a legislature where she is very popular. Think of all the tremendous abuses of power and illegal activities of the current Republican administration. They have emerged from them all unscathed. They are doing their best to work their magic with Palin. This afternoon I was thinking she will probably be forced to resign from the ticket. Now I'm wondering if she will stay on. They are getting a lot of money for the campaign and also the deflated 527s will begin to inflate with her there pumped up by the anti-abortion fanatics.

Unsurprised
"No Surprises From Palin, McCain Team Says"-Washington Post
Senior McCain officials described themselves as "unsurprised" today as huge storms of locusts flew from Wasilla, Alaska and descended upon McCain campaign headquarters. "Locusts were vetted. Locusts were vetted in the vet" said one campaign official, who spoke without attribution out of concern that he would be devoured by a verminous flying cloud. The campaign also described as "expected" reports that the rivers were running black with ashes, that family pets were begin to speak in human voices, declaiming "Release Sarah!", and that a huge spreading stain was beginning to blot out the Northern sun. "Vetted" said the campaign.
"There are exciting new studies that show that locusts can be used as a source of biodegradable fuel" said Newt Gingrich, as he hunkered down to avoid the black marble obelisks falling from the sky around him. "Palin, if she can be said to have played a role in bringing about these new biofuel resources, should be praised for her innovative role in the solution to our future energy demands".
"These events firmly demonstrate Palin's deep connection to traditional modes of traditional expression, in traditional forms, traditionally." said William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard. "Experience, in the face of these more traditional events, is overrated..." continued Kristol, before ending the interview to wrap himself head-to-toe in mosquito netting and swallowing a bitter tasting anti-malarial drug, the taste of which, as his lips contorted, he noted to be "surprisingly refreshing."
Palin's schedule in the upcoming days of the Republican National Convention has been cut short due to, as one McCain communications aide reported, a desire not to "let the magic out of the bottle too quickly." "Sarah is a precious resource, who each moment brings a new vitality and energy to every worker on the campaign" said the aide, while fighting to remove the nest of serpents which had suddenly materialized on the floor beneath him, and were now slowly ascending his legs. "Do these bite, or just slink?" asked the aide, who spoke on conditions of anonymity so as not to provoke or otherwise alienate the reptiles.
Meanwhile, as the heavens darkened, the seas began to boil, and a voice tore through the clouds shouting, in deep, stentorian tones to one and all: "It was a Mistake!", campaign offices described themselves as "unperturbed". "Serpents materializing, house pets suddenly called to vocal advocacy, Celestial callings to revise and repent...Vetted" said the spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity as he was turning into a pillar of salt. "Everything that was vetted was vetted in the vet."

Why does Sarah Palin hate America?
Why does John McCain think American voters are stupid?
Just two of many questions the MSM has failed to ask.

Good questions, both.
For the first, I think it's because of, well, low-wattage -- plus what she thought at the time was political expediency. There are just a whole lot of folks in Alaska who like to think of themselves as rugged individualists worthy of having their own Republic etc., while... in reality, they live off of the tax dollars that the rest of us pay for their 'earmarks' -- out of our own salaries, just to prop-up these low-watt, welfare-based Paul Bunyans.
So when Palin thought it would help her personal career, she was all about secession from the United States of America.
Now Palin is saying: "Who? Me?"
Y'know, Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee never tried to hide the fact that they were in the Confederacy. Why is Palin hiding her own history?

I'll say one thing, she is really testing the Republicans ability to spin with a straight face.

Palin wants to be VP nominee for the Republicans, the Party of Lincoln, the party that spilled blood to keep the party together, and she is friendly, not simply in a "he's a buddy so I forgive his crazy talk" way but politically friendly, with people who want to tear the union apart.
And yet the Right keeps hammering Obama over a preacher he separated himself from?
The McCain camp needs to deal with this. I could think of a coupe answers that if they would give them, would leave me skeptical but would at least say they were smart enough to deal with it. But Dems need to bring this out, to see WHAT response Palin and the GOP give.

We all know Gov. Palin was the wrong choice for the right...It seems that Terry Trippany over at News Busters feels McCain's ill-advised decision is Barack Obama's fault.

Well I have to say that if this is true...Gov. Palin has affiliated to a group that is truly anti-American. Isn't that worse then anything Obama has ever done? No one can find anything wrong with Obama that they question his patriotism. But now with this revelation...who's the one that is really unpatriotic? Wonder if she became President would she help Alaska break away from the union on her 11th hour? ummm..something to ponder...

Vetted, are you kidding me? McCain didn't vet her one bit. He's hot for her, it's as simple as that He doesn't care what she stands for as long as she's makes him look like the stud he thinks he is. Have you noticed the way McCain checks out her ass? Almost every shot of him and Palin, he's getting in a glance. Have you noticed how Cindy glared at her husband when he announced his selection? This has nothing to do with Palin's qualifications. He thought he was being so smart to get a woman as a running mate. He thought he'd just pull in all the Hillary supporters, not even realizing Palin was the anti-Hillary. It's just for show....and to piss of his wife.

I agree. I don't think they vetted her at all since they never thought for even a second that McCain would pick her. August surprise!!! Now it's turning out to be a big embarrassment. Most Republicans are truly disappointed in his choice. The Christian right are happy but that's a minority. Did you see the latest polls? The idea of having a person with even less experience be next in line to be President if McCain dies in office is scary. McCain has a history of health problems and we don't even know how bad his health really is...do you think the Republicans would disclose the truth? Yeah, right!

It's only the radical left that is so afraid that Ms. Palin will electrify not only Republicans, but women and other interests, that they feel they must find 'anything' to discredit her. I hear the Republicans have 3, not 2, eyewitnesses who will swear Obama shot Martin Luther King...but what does it prove. Obama is all mouth and no substance...nevr made a decision in the IL Senate and in his only year actually sitting in the US Senate before going fulltime on his Presidential bid, not once did he author, co-author or even vehemently support any significant piece of legislation. The dems missed the boat in not electing Hillary to the top post. Her campaign underestimated his organizing campaign's organizing and fundraising skills, esp utilizing the internet. But he has never had to make an executive decision in gov't, let alone running one. I hope she kicks his ass!

Joe Vogler looks positivley sane when compared to Daniel DeNardo, one of the two Alaska Independence Pary candidates for Governor who ran against Palin in 2006
Questions were posed by the Alaska Family Council (a right wing group)
-----------
Question #1 - Would you support legislation and/or a Constitutional amendment to clarify that the state constitution does not contain a right to abortion?
Daniel DeNardo (AIP) - Yes. The Alaska Supreme Soviet (Court) has no common law jurisdiction to overthrow the Law of Nature and Nature’s Trinity.
Question #2 - Would you support a Constitutional amendment to limit state funding for abortions to only situations in which a woman’s life or major bodily functions are threatened?
Daniel DeNardo (AIP) - Yes. The Alaska Supreme Soviet (Court) has no common law jurisdiction to overthrow the Law of Nature and Nature’s Trinity.
Question #3 - Would you support a Constitutional amendment to change the judicial selection process?
Daniel DeNardo (AIP) - Yes. The Zionists who reject Christ Jesus dominate the judicial process, including the Judicial Conduct Commission.
Question #4 - If the Alaska Supreme Court declares the parental consent law unconstitutional, would you support a Constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court and allow the parental consent law to be enforced?
Daniel DeNardo (AIP) - Yes. The Supreme Soviet is manipulating its authority outside its constitutional jurisdiction. It has no lawmaking authority, and its actions are constitutionally void.
Question #5 - Would you support a Constitutional amendment to overturn Alaska Supreme Court decision mandating public employers to provide benefits equivalent to marriage to same-sex couples?

"Jonestown," AK. All this phoney small town mystique is fairly creepy and somewhat suggestive of the fanatical separatism found in Jonestown, Brook Farm, and all those scary gun farms--spawning bombers, skinheads and neo-nazi terrorists. Is Sarah the "Jonestown Candidate"?

Hey, give her a break. Sarah Palin's support of the AIP is a mark of her "foreign policy experience". However, you have two choices about her decision about breaking off Alaska. The first is it's a pretty silly idea and an example poor judgment. The state doesn't have the economy of CA, the military assets of GA, or the broad-based, popular support of NY. They're still depending on earmarks. The second, more generous choice, is she would look to a neighboring country protect Alaska: either Canada of Russia. I doubt Canada would even talk about it. It would stir things up with Quebec too much. That leaves Russia. Hmmm... A break away state? A buffer state? Oil and pipeline control? Breaking the DEW Line and examining the technology? Gaining a continental foothold so they aren't limited to cross-polar attacks? Have I missed any of the Russian national interests that she would be handing them on a platter? I'm sure Russia would even be willing to compensate the US by giving our $7.2M back. These aren't even GOP party values!

By the time I arrived in Fairbanks, Vogler was dead but the signs seeking help into his sudden and mysterious disappearance were still plastered-up through-out the Tanana Valley. While I knew what had happened to him (shot dead by a delusional “artist” looking to purchase explosives from Vogler) there was so much still to learn about who he was and why a Kansas farmboy turned attorney fled to the Territory of Alaska in 1943, ultimately becoming a gold mining and resource/land development legend through-out Alaska. I set out to answer the why but with any “larger-than-life” figure (even in a small state) my answer never came. I discovered a racist with delusions of grandeur, prone to paranoia, but uncommonly well-read and highly self-reliant. He was (and remains today) an enigma.
