A Night At The Congressional Races
Here's tonight's run-down on the Congressional races: National Democrats are spending big, but a new round of polling could give the GOP some hope in key races.
Lieberman Defends GOPer Norm Coleman From Dem Attacks, Says Iraq War Had Proper Oversight
Joe Lieberman has put out a statement on behalf of Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN), disputing Al Franken's attack that Coleman didn't do enough to provide oversight over Iraq contracts while he chaired an important subcommittee. "It is simply untrue, and irresponsible, to suggest that while Norm Coleman was investigating corruption here at home, that investigations in Iraq were not going on," Lieberman wrote.
National Dems Shell Out Big Bucks For Attack Ads Today
The DCCC has spent over $1.5 million today for their new wave of attack ads, according to the FEC newest filings. Money is being spent in 14 races across ten states, most notably $310,000 for three seats in John McCain's home state of Arizona. Here's one of those ads, targeting the Republican challenger against freshman Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ):
Coleman: "We Have To Run The Play" On Paulson's Bailout
Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN), who has made the bizarre claim that that the federal government could make a 10x-20x profit on the proposed Wall St. bailout, introduced a new line of rhetoric in support of the plan. "We're all there, the folks in the huddle and we're working with them on the play," Coleman said, likening the proposal to a football game and casting Ben Bernanke and Henry Paulson as quarterbacks. "But we have to run the play."
Pressure Mounts On GOP Senator's Company Hiring Illegals
The Williamette Week, the local paper in Oregon that has been hammering Sen. Gordon Smith (R) with their reports that his frozen-food company has been hiring illegal immigrants, has yet another article out telling the story of an illegal alien who worked at the factory. "None of this would matter if Gordon Smith's public actions and pronouncements about illegal immigration had not been so at odds with his company's private business practices," the paper says sternly.
Poll: Sununu Ahead In New Hampshire Senate Race
A new Rasmussen poll of New Hampshire is giving Sen. John Sununu (R), one of the top targets for the national Democrats this cycle, a 52%-45% lead over Dem opponent Jeanne Shaheen. This is the first poll in a long time to give Sununu a lead, so it may just be an outlier -- or it could be a sign that his attacks on Shaheen as a tax-hiker are working.
Poll: Udall Only Narrowly Ahead In Colorado
The new Rasmussen poll of Colorado gives Democrat Mark Udall only a 46%-44% lead over Republican Bob Schaffer in the race for this open GOP-held Senate seat, down from a 50%-42% lead from last month. Most other polls give Udall a better lead than that, but this race is clearly going to be seriously-contested to the very end.

So let me get this straight. Lieberman, who totally failed at conducting oversight on his own committee, is now vouching for Coleman?
Plus, if you're a GOP Senator, can you now just call up Joe and get a favorable press release?
Does he have a hotline?

Let me get this straight:
Jeanne Shaheen's favorables/unfavorables stand at 52/46 and John Sununu registers at 49/47, but this same sample group is currently planning to vote for Sununu over Shaheen 52%-45%?!
Meanwhile Sen. Bob Schaffer (R) is gaining support during an epic financial crisis that American's blame Republicans for over Democrats 2:1 ???
I'd like to know how Rasmussen is weighting these polls. Can someone with a subscription please investigate this?

Agreed. These results look weird.

Lieberman, if you recall, is the man who approved Bush's appointment of Michael D. Brown to FEMA. He clearly has no credibility when it comes to oversight.
God should reach down and slap his face.
