A Night At The Congressional Races
Here's tonight's run-down of the Congressional races: The political attacks today have been particularly rough, with candidates being charged with exporting jobs, crafting legislation to benefit themselves financially -- and writing pornography.
NRSC Ad: Al Franken Jokes About Rape, Physically Assaults People
Wow. The NRSC's new ad against Al Franken doesn't pull any punches, calling him "unfit for office" due in part to the many sick jokes he's told over the years as a comedian:
"Franken writes about committing rape," the announcer says. "Franken writes pornography so vile, Democrats denounced it."
Poll: Minnesota Senate Race A Dead Heat
A new Rasmussen poll confirms just how close the Minnesota Senate race is -- and explains why both sides are busy running the nastiest attack ads they can think of. The numbers: Sen. Norm Coleman (R) 48%, Al Franken (D) 47%, within the ±4% margin of error. Last month, the two of them were tied 45%-45%.
Disputed Mississippi Ballot Released, With Changes
The official Mississippi sample ballot was released today, after a legal battle over the placement of the special U.S. Senate election. Following an effort by Gov. Haley Barbour (R) to bury the race at the bottom of the ballot, the state Supreme Court ruled that it had to be near the top with other federal races.
Poll: Dem On Track For Easy Win In New Mexico Senate Race
The new survey from Public Policy Polling (D) has Democrat Tom Udall easily defeating Republican Steve Pearce in the race for the open GOP-held SEnate seat in New Mexico. The numbers: Udall 57%, Pearce 37%.
GOP's Mike Erickson To Face Debate Tonight
The candidates running for the open seat in Oregon's Dem-held Fifth Congressional district will have a debate tonight. Mike Erickson (R) has been apprehensive to debate following allegations that include using loopholes to take an exotic vacation to Cuba and, as a family values conservative, paying for his younger girlfriend's abortion about eight years ago.
Rep. Musgrave (R) Proposing Peculiar Tax Cut
Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO) is backing legislation to lower taxes on precious metal and coin investments, which her Dem opponent Betsy Markey says would benefit a small group of taxpayers -- including Rep. Musgrave and her husband, who have extensive investments in rare gold coins. This comes after an ad from the Musgrave campaign questioning if Markey used her position as a Senate staffer to gain government contracts.
Dems Hit GOP Candidate For Hiring Labor In China
The DCCC is on the air with this ad in New York's open GOP-held 26th Congressional District, attacking GOP nominee Chris Lee for employing cheap labor in China when he could have had factories over here:
"Lee tried to hide the facts, removing all mention of his company employing workers in China from his campaign Web site," the announcer says. This begs an important question: Why in the world would he have put that on his campaign site in the first place???

Wow, that's some low stuff.
God it would be good to defeat "Subnorm" Coleman, that lowlife Bush enabler and disgrace to the University of Iowa College of Law. And having a Senator with a major league wit would be a nice change, particularly since two of the cleverer ones will be ascending to the Executive Branch.
Come on Minnesotans, step up!

The Udall/Pearce numbers look good.
What I think is funny is, that if tv spots are all you had to go on, Udall comes off as slightly buffoonish and Pearce like a snide ogre. Maybe New Mexicans are actually checking what they stand for instead of believing these ads (ok, probably dreaming)

Wow. The NRSC's new ad against Al Franken doesn't pull any punches, calling him "unfit for office" due in part to the many sick jokes he's told over the years as a comedian:
Well, these are the people who thought Reagan was really a cowboy, and Ahnuld was really a futuristic, unstoppable killing machine.

If Franken was a Republican, you'd be all over this same stuff like white on rice. Franken's not unfit for office, but he's a terrible candidate and it's no wonder he is polling so far behind his expected numbers.

Good point. I'm not a big fan of Franken as a politician, he should stick to comedy (I guess I never found him that funny either, but oh well). That being said, he's still a thousand times better than Coleman.

I completely disagree. First off, I wouldn't use that kind of thing against a Republican (I wouldnt say that the fact that Arnold has killed tons of people in his movies makes him unfit...)
Also, Franken isnt really polling to badly. He's bwwn inching up for a while (down 1 in todays Ras poll) and going up against an incumbent is never an easy task.

Al Franken made fun of a gorilla in 'Trading Places" as Drunken Baggage Handler #2. Maybe Coleman should get MADD or PETA to go after hin.

I always worry a little before seeing these Coleman ads that maybe they got Franken nailed this time, but when I actually see them with my own eyes I laugh at how pathetic they are - everyone in MN knows that Franken was a comedian for 20 years who wrote 5 or 6 scathing books about republicans and who talked for several hours a day on the radio railing against Bush and the Iraq war. This stuff is the best they can do? I get the feeling that these "negative ads" against Franken are actually doing Coleman far more harm.

Listen, I love Al Franken, I think he's got a lot of good ideas and the kind of personality and skill set to implement them. Unlike some of the commenters above, I can't think of a lot of people I'd rather have in the Senate. But that's a great commercial. In particular, the image of him ranting at the microphone thrusting his finger in the air with his hair flying all over the place is poignant. I wish Dems made commercials half as well as Republicans.
For instance, McCain has an ad out that starts with him addressing the camera and talking up how great the American worker is. If we had any balls at all we'd run that in grainy footage, then contrast it with the bit of him telling a room full of booing workers that Americans are too lazy and fragile to pick lettuce. That would be an ad!

Off Topic...Rachel Maddow is the Bomb. Watching her now. Borrowing cable.

That is off topic. But I'm watching her too and agree with you completely.

Indeed, she is awesome.

I'm sorry, but it really bothers me when people are so dismissive of Al Franken.
For many of us, he was a shining beacon of hope in the days when it seemed as if Conservative and Neo-Con ideologies had completely taken over both the media and the world of political discourse. He was, and still is, a smart and thoughtful man, who happens to be blessed with the ability to express his thoughts with humor.
He can also frame complex issues in a way that ordinary people can understand them. Without him, few, if any of us would have ever heard of Rachel Maddow. (I LOVE Rachel too, but I'll save that gush for another post.)
Personally, I think Americans have often done a LOT worse in choosing their Senators. If I lived in MN, Al Franken would most certainly have my vote.
I know it's popular to hold Al Franken as 'just a buffoon' because he makes people laugh. But the man also saved many of us from despair after our hearts were devastated by the Far Right's successes. He gave us hope and assured us that we were not alone, and that the Democratic Party ideals that we believed in our hearts were the truth and we did not have to be ashamed of being Democrats.
I will always be grateful to him for that.

I could not agree more. Those were indeed dark days when Al Franken started on AirAmerica. There was nothing else. Al Franken was serious then and is serious now. He will be a great senator! Everyone send money!

First, we all saw the movie "Trading Places" where the Corrupt PI got it in the end . . . BFD.
Secondly, Franken is a real DEM. He has publically supporting DEMs for over two years through his PAC. His poisitions are more progessive than Obama's. He is smart, edducated and literate.
Norm Coleman is a festering . . . Well . . . Let's just say he is a blight on politics.
Boys and Girls, Franken is a Whelstone Democrat. We need 60 of him in the Senate. Plus he did the right thing and is actually RUNNING for office.
The thing Fraken needs to do is own his funny . . .

Um - my comment on 'Trading Places' was sarcastic. I think Franken is great.

"As the character of Stuart Smalley, Al Franken RIDICULED people who were involved in 12-step programs!"
"Against Self-Help."
