A Night At The Congressional Races

Here's tonight's rundown on the Congressional races: It wasn't a good day for the GOP, with a mixture of legal defeat, the wrong candidate winning the nomination for a key seat, and tough counter-attacks from the Dems.

Democrats Win Court Battle In Mississippi Senate Race
In a surprise victory for the Dems, the Mississippi Supreme Court has ruled against the efforts by GOP Gov. Haley Barbour to bury the hotly-contested special election for Senate at the bottom of the physical ballot used on Election Day, where lower-information voters might have overlooked it. Oddly enough, though, the court declined to issue a formal order that Barbour must change the ballot, but only threatened to issue one if he did not comply from here on out.

Late Update: Barbour's office says he will comply with the ruling.

NY Conservatives: No, We're Not Nominating Fossella
A leader of the New York Conservative Party is ruling out the possibility of subbing in scandal-plagued retiring Rep. Vito Fossella (R) as their new nominee for Congress. "No, absolutely not," said Brooklyn party chairman Jerry Kassar, in an interview with Election Central. "He is not under consideration, nor has he requested consideration."

Don Young's Primary Challenger Concedes Defeat
Alaska Lt. Gov Sean Parnell (R) has conceded defeat in his primary challenge to Rep. Don Young, which he lost by only about 300 votes. The primary was over three weeks ago, but it took this long to count all the ballots. National Republicans wanted Parnell as the nominee, and now expect the scandal-plagued Young to lose this November against Dem nominee Ethan Berkowitz, a major pick-up in a deep-red state.

Dem Candidate's Ad Spotlights Son's Service In Iraq, His Own In Vietnam
Air Force veteran Charlie Brown, the Dem nominee for the open seat of Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA), has this ad up starring his wife discussing her son's military service in Iraq and Charlie's past service in Vietnam:

The ad is clearly a rebuttal to a new spot from Republican nominee Tom McClintock, which attacked Brown for attending an anti-Iraq War rally and went so far as to accuse him of supporting the hanging in effigy of American troops.

Liberal Dem Congressman Accepts Surprise GOP Nomination
Rep. Peter Welch (D-VT) could also be known as "(R-VT)" -- at least, he will be this election, after he received enough write-in votes to win the Republican primary when the GOP itself didn't field anybody. He has accepted the nomination, and is now running for re-election on both the Democratic and Republican ballot lines.

Coleman Ad Keeps Up Attacks On Franken's Potty-Mouth
Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN) has this new ad up, continuing his use of old footage of Al Franken cursing at public appearances:

"And his experience is--," the announcer says, followed by footage of Franken yelling "so f______ shameless!"

Re: Welch-Thats what I call bi-partisanship!

yeah, it's freakin' hilarious.

So will he be able to caucus with both the D's and R's in the House? Get both majority and minority committee assignments?

I shudder to think about the attack adds he can run against his opponent.

He knows about all of the skeletons in his opponent's closet!

NEWS FLASH: Al Franken has a potty mouth!

Much less egregious than having a black heart with little concern for people who are so in need of help. Give me a "librul" every time when it comes to taking care of people who need help. And I am an old fashioned caring Republican who now votes totally with Democrats. The Republican Party has lost its soul. But I am not leaving the party. I got to precinct meetings just to hassle every one.

And Dick Cheney tells all potty-mouths to go fuck themselves. So there.

Michael Smirconish (conservative talk radio in Philly) wonders out loud on MSNBC, why is there no great hue anc cry that now two weeks later, Sarahcuda has yet to sit down and answer REAL questions?

Damn straight. But he's not showing enough *deference*...

Barbour stated that he would comply on Demcember 31, 2008. Until then we are all S.O.L.

Everytime anyone says Norm Coleman's name, they speak profanity.

"...where lower-information voters might have overlooked it."
