A Night At The Congressional Races
Here's the rundown on today's Congressional races: The theme for today is ethics -- and how everyone is saying their opponents don't have any.
House Dems Demand DOJ Get Involved In Miss. Senate Race
A group of Congressional Dems led by House Judiciary chairman John Conyers (D-MI) are now demanding Justice Department intervention in the Mississippi Senate race, where GOP officials are tying to bury the race at the bottom of the ballot. "What we have here is a clear intent to confuse voters," said Mississippi Dem Congressman Bennie Thompson, in a press release from the group.
Dem Candidate Ties Himself To McCain In Deep-Red Kentucky
Bruce Lunsford, the Democratic businessman running against Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) has an interesting strategy in his new ad. Since he's running a state that is likely to go to John McCain by a very wide margin, he's tying himself to McCain's own condemnations of Republican corruption:
"John McCain singled out Mitch McConnell on corruption," the announcer says. In a way, this is essentially the mirror image of Republicans like Sen. Gordon Smith and Rep. Christopher Shays, who have tied themselves to Barack Obama in their much bluer states.
Dems Go Directly After Ted Stevens' Scandals In New Ad
The DSCC's new ad in Alaska goes right after Sen. Ted Stevens (R) for his indictment and other ethical scandals:
"Stevens once used his power for Alaska -- now he uses his power for himself," the announcer says.
Musgrave Alleges Opponent Used Government To Enrich Herself
The campaign of Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO), a Christian-Right champion who is in serious danger of defeat this year, is accusing her Dem opponent Betsy Markey of using her time as an aide to Sen. Salazar (D-CO) to secure contracts for her family's Internet-service business, which Markey has strongly denied. Musgrave's campaign has not offered any evidence, but said the onus is on Markey to prove she did not abuse the public trust. Here's her ad built around the accusation:
Smith And Merkley Schedule Debates
Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR) and Dem opponent Jeff Merkley, who are locked in a tight race, have finally agreed to two debates after much haggling on Smith's part. The first one is set for October 9, with the next one just four days later.
Arnold To Hold Fundraiser For Smith
Meanwhile, Gordon Smith will be holding a fundraiser this Friday with a very high-profile guest: California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Tickets start at $1,000.
Bachmann May End Up Skipping Debate
A group of citizens in the Minnesota town of Scandia, located in the district of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R), have scheduled a town-hall debate for September 23. One problem: Democratic challenger El Tinklenberg and independent candidate Bob Anderson have accepted the invitation, but Bachmann herself has not yet RSVP-ed.
Libertarian Candidate In Legal Trouble
Kevin Barrett, the Libertarian candidate for Wisconsin's Third District, is now facing a disorderly conduct charge after a domestic incident. Barrett is best known for expressing his skepticism over Osama bin Laden's role in the 9/11 attacks, which he expressed in a class he taught at the state university, and has been endorsed by Jesse Ventura.

Beau Biden, Senator Biden's son, will be on The Tonight show later today. Tune in.

Very unsurprising. Blue Dog Dems do that all the time. 'Bout the only way for a Dem to get elected in some states.

Markey should send out a press release accusing Musgrave of supporting terrorism. Markey doesn't need to offer evidence, Musgrave just has to prove she isn't aiding and abetting Osama.
And the Democratic opponent of Michelle (I never blink!) Bachmann is "El Tinklenberg"?
"Tinklenberg"?

Yeah, weird name, but a decent candidate. Bachmann suffers one of the same problems as Palin: she's good looking, but when she goes off script she sounds like the complete religious nutter that she is. Here's hoping that she'll accept and show-up for the debate.

Lunsford is doing something different than what Chris Shays and Gordon Smith have been trying to do
In this case, he is using the words of McCain to criticize the record of the McConnell -- attempting to drive a wedge between the positions of two. Lunsford doesn't say that he is aligned with McCain on anything other than opposing McConnell's behaviour and wanting "change"
In Oregon and Connecticut, the Republican incumbents are attempting to associate themselves positively with Obama, claiming they work with him, etc
Using McCain's words against a Republican seems more acceptable to me than a Republican trying to latch on to Obama's campaign. (Although I'd prefer that no Democratic candidates ran ads featuring McCain - except attack ads - but I'm willing to give a candidate in Kentucky a pass on this.)

McConnell's done such damage to the country with his backwater me-me-me-isms.
On the TrooperGate front, allies of Sarah Palin are asking a judge to halt the investigation:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/16/palin.trooper.probe/index.html
"are conducting a McCarthyistic investigation in an unlawful, biased, partial and partisan political manner in order to impact the upcoming Alaska general and national presidential elections."
Can a law guru among us shed any light on the threashold of evidence needed to qualify for the legal state of "McCarthyistic?"
good grief...

John McCain has posted a clarification on his aide's claim that John had help to create the Blackberry device. Now it makes sense.
Go to the link, and click on recommend so that more readers get to see Senator McCain's clarification.

Yes, this was more akin to McCain's ads around the DNC(onvention). But, actually, this is even better, because it lacks the taste of cynical disingenuous with which McCain was/is embracing Hillary.

Stop calling Bruce Lunsford a Democrat. Is not now, never has been, never will be.
Trust me, Lunsford would be WORSE than McConnell on progressive policies in the Senate.
Doesn't matter, anyway. Mitch is gonna bury him. Not because Democrats here will vote for McConnell, but because they won't vote for Lunsford. Watch - the vote count on that race will be less than half the count for the presidential race.
