A Day At The Congressional Races

With the economy continuing to dominate the political discourse, Republicans are taking two tacks: Proclaiming their heroism in killing the bailout, or just plain changing the subject.

Bachmann: Pelosi's Speech Did Not Make Us Vote No
Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) is directly contradicting the party leadership's notion that Nancy Pelosi's speech yesterday led to Republicans voting against the bailout. "I want to assure you that was not the case," Bachmann said at a Republican Study Committee press conference yesterday. "We are not babies who suck our thumbs. We have very principled reasons for voting no."

Davis Iglesias Bashes GOP House Nominee
Here's a video making the rounds, in which former U.S. Attorney goes after Darren White, the Republican nominee for the close open seat of Rep. Heather Wilson (R-NM), for overzealously wanting to prosecute accusations of voter fraud:

"So I've been very disappointed in Darren. He doesn't understand his duties as a sheriff," Iglesias says. "He put -- and this is why I'm very critical about people like Gonzales -- they put loyalty to the party at a higher plane than their loyalty to the Constitution. Darren did the same thing. So I hope the voters understand that come November."

Jean Schmidt: I'm Suspending My Campaign!
Campaign-suspension fever is spreading. Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) said she is leaving the campaign trail to deal with the Wall St. crisis. "While there is an election out there, the public sent me here to work," Schmidt said. Note: Schmidt voted against the bailout.

GOP Ad: Dem Wants Us To Use Dogsleds
The NRCC is going on the air in the GOP-leaning district of incumbent Rep. Phil English (R-PA), trying to seize the economic narrative against Democrat Kathy Dahlkemper:

The ad attacks Dahlkemper for saying people should conserve energy in the face of high gas prices: "Hmm, how about we use dog-sleds, too?"

Merkley Ad Hits Smith For Opposing Abortion
Senate candidate Jeff Merkley (D-OR) is playing to the Democratic base with this new ad against incumbent Sen. Gordon Smith (R), hammering him for his anti-abortion position:

Smith's campaign is objecting to the ad, calling it divisive: "Twelve years ago, Gordon said that while he is pro-life, he would not be [a] single issue senator, and on issues like medical research, international family planning and judges he's been proving that ever since."

Smith Ad: Merkley Will Fail Rural Voters
Sen. Gordon Smith (R-OR), who has fallen behind Democrat Jeff Merkley in recent polls, has this new ad playing to the state GOP's rural Oregon base:

"Too often it's Portland first, the rest of Oregon last," the announcer says. Take this as a sign that Smith is effectively writing off his past campaign strategies of performing relatively well for a Republican in the Portland metro area, and will be trying to ramp up turnout with the party's base.

Begich To Pay Ethics Fine
Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich (D), who is running narrowly ahead of scandal-plagued Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) in this deep-red state, has agreed to pay a $1,400 fine for failing to fully disclose his assets. While this is an exceptionally minor offense in comparison to Stevens' scandals, it does have the potential of undercutting his clean-government image on a political level.

"Wacky ideas" like walking places and riding bikes?!?! OMG! What will these crazy Democrats suggest next? That eating your vegetables and exercising might be good for you?

Seriously, that ad sounds like a parody.

That really is one of the funniest ads I've ever seen. "What's Kathy Dahlkemper's wacky solution? [Walking places.]" I typed out a bunch of different snarky comments here but none of them quite measured up to just how absurd that sentiment is.

What exactly does it mean to be a "conservative" any more? My grandmother (who is a rock-ribbed Republican) always grouses when she sees big SUVs on the highway with just one person in them; having grown up in the depression (and then in WWII, with rationing) she cannot abide the idea of waste. That is real conservatism in my book, and if the GOP were pushing that brand of conservatism even I might consider voting Republican. Of course, the GOP is running in exactly the opposite direction (which is, perhaps, why my traditionally solid grandmother is becoming progressively more and more disenchanted with her own party in recent years).

This is what kills me about all this nonsense about limited government. The very idea of "limited government" presupposes a virtuous citizenry. It is only when citizens police themselves and check their own excesses that we can get by without an external agency to offer such checks. To be philosophically consistent, the small-government types should be the very ones most concerned about personal virtues, like a conscientious aversion to wasteful consumption. Instead, however, the GOP is advocating the schizophrenic positions that one should both favor limited government and despise those who advocate personal virtues. This is not "conservatism," this is infantilism.

Meanwhile, on a personal note, I commute to work and do most of my shopping on a bike. My commute is one of the most pleasant parts of my day. I would advise these blowhards in the RNC to try biking before they knock it. They will be surprised at how enjoyable it is. Cars are coffins on wheels.

Bears repeating.

Now Mean Jean Schmidt is joining the whiny ass titty baby Repugs and suspending her campaign?

Goddamn I hope this means this bitch is finished but I think she's polling ahead and god knows why -

I can't help but wonder how (un)popular Rep. Bachmann is among Minnesotans these days.

Minnesotans, on the whole, think Michelle is a nut. And I'm being kind.

But Michelle represents a mostly exurban district. A lot of people who moved out of the Twin Cities because the climate was getting too dark(skinned), to buy their own little piece of the American Dream.

So the more narrow question is - what do these people think? I couldn't tell you. I do know she's got competent competition this election.

Wow ARG's polls are preety bad for Obama, losing NV,NC and VA. But the suprise is the the Georgia senate race. Martin within 2% of Chambliss Is it really a competitive race?

Well, it goes without saying that I would rather be ahead than behind in any polls. Still and all, ARG has a positively dismal track record, so if (as it seems) Rasmussen and CNN & al show Obama ahead in these places while ARG shows him behind, I am inclined to discount ARG. Besides, the NC and NV results are improvements over the last ARG polls in these states.

The thing about the ARG polls is if you look at the internals, they're all trending toward Obama. That's really the best way to read polls like these, as all polling organizations have their own set of assumptions, biases, and turnout models that they employ. So you tread new polls with some degree of scepticism, and you compare trend data with established polls.

Obama has made up ground in all the ARG polls released today since the last time they released polls from these states, so you take this data for what it's worth. We won't really know who's right until election day.

How stupid are the Republicans? They are attacking a candidate because she advocates energy conservation? Puhleeze!

They been running for decades on themes from "you have the right to drive as big a car as you can afford" to "global warming is a plot for libruls to take away your freedum." Their iconic image in this is Jimmy Carter asking people to turn down their thermostats to save fuel.

So yes, in many many places they will do exactly that. Conservatism is at its core very selfish, and if everyone doing what they damn well please adds up to suffering for all of us, then that must be what God intended.

You have to figure that the end times are nigh when Michele Bachmann starts sounding sensible.

David Iglesias, not Davis. Not a big deal, but still...

Thank you, Barney Frank! Way to divide and conquer!
