A Day At The Congressional Races

Here's today's rundown on the Congressional races: The money is flowing like water, as more and more candidates in close races are hitting the airwaves.

Senate GOP Candidates In Possible Financial Hot Water Over Ad Errors
The FEC and FCC are now examining complaints in four states -- Minnesota, Oregon, Colorado and Virginia -- involving the failure of Republican Senate candidates to have their approval disclaimers run for the appropriate length of time in their ads. If the complaints pan out, these candidates would have to pay a higher rate for their TV advertising for the rest of the campaign -- though it's unlikely that the agencies will actually take such a step over this error.

Millions of Dollars Being Pumped Into New Hampshire Senate Rae
The money is flowing heavily into the New Hampshire Senate race, where first-term GOP Sen. John Sununu has trailed former Dem Gov. Jeanne Shaheen in the polls. Between the candidates themselves, their party committees, and outside groups, over $5.4 million has been spent for TV ads on the state's biggest station, WMUR.

Louisiana TV Station Tells GOPer To Pull Ad Using Their Footage
New Orleans television station WVUE is asking Republican U.S. Senate candidate John Kennedy to pull a campaign ad that uses footage from its news reports on the grounds that the ad might give viewers the impression that the station endorses Kennedy. A Kennedy campaign spokesman said the campaign has no intention of pulling the ad and that the footage falls under fair use.

Polls: Franken Catching Up In Minnesota Senate Race
Al Franken is now trailing only narrowly in two polls of the Minnesota Senate race from this weekend, after previous polls from the Summer showed him significantly behind. The SurveyUSA poll: GOP Sen. Norm Coleman 41%, Franken 40%, and Independence Party nominee Dean Barkley 14%. And from the Star Tribune: Coleman 41%, Franken 37%, Barkley 13%.

Dem Rep. From Deep-Red District: Pull Out Of Iraq, Go To Afghanistan
Rep. Nancy Boyda (D-KS), who represents a deep-red district and is easily one of the most endangered Democrats this cycle, says her recent trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan has reinforced her belief that it is time to re-deploy troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. "It is still so hard to understand why we took our eye off the ball," Boyda told the local paper The Manhattan Mercury.

Goofy Ad From Dem House Candidate: America Being Held Back By Oil-Men
Here's a funny ad from Albuquerque Councillor Martin Heinrich, running for an open GOP-held seat in New Mexico that often sees close races. This one depicts American literally being held back in the race against other countries, thanks to George Bush's economic policies and a pesky, cartoonish oil-man:

News from NY-13: Vito Fossella, whose well-documented antics have turned the seat from a safe Republican seat into a Dem-leaning one, is apparently thinking of getting back into the race. The sad thing is, he's probably a stronger candidate than the guy the Republicans nominated. (Robert Straniere, the Republican candidate, apparently does not live on Staten Island, and doesn't have any money.)

Apparently I say "apparently" too much.

It's tempting to believe the polls when we like them and seek problems when we don't. The polls in Minnesota show Franken essentially tied with Coleman, and Obama tied with McCain. It might be counterintuitive that both Franken and McCain would gain, and it looks like younger voters are split about evenly or even favoring Republicans a bit. I have some trouble believing that part, but personally, I'm swallowing my dislike of the results and accepting them. Good news for Franken, bad for Obama. That's just how it is. I say forget rationalizing the polls and instead dig deeper into our pockets and go knock on some doors.

Looks like I'll be going to my first political fundraiser in a couple of weeks.

Al Gore and David Wellstone will be appearing at gig with Al Franken here in Northern California on September 28, Sunday.

It's happening in a small town called Nicasio, not far from Point Reyes Station in Marin county.  With general admission only $250 a pop, it's something that won't break my piggy bank.

Details are here:  http://www.actblue.com/page/swig

Although that web page doesn't give the guest list, here's an excerpt from Al's e-mail:

That's why Vice President Al Gore is joining me and my friends David Wellstone & Bob Weir on Sunday, September 28, for a backyard barbecue with friends and music! I hope you can join us, as well, at Mary & Steven Swig's gorgeous redwoods grove in Nicasio.

Sounds like fun!

Keep working and keep giving!

Obama underperforms his polls!

We saw this ibn the primaries!
