Tomorrow's Swift-Boating Of Obama, Today!

Jerome Corsi, the writer of "Unfit for Command," which provided the basis for the Swift-Boat-Vets attack on John Kerry, is out with a new book that has the same lofty goals, but this time, the target is Barack Obama.

Today's New York Times has a run-down on the book, and the paper reports that Corsi is planning to work with some conservative groups to run Swift-Boat style ads against Obama, and the wingnut noise machine is already going full throttle, with talk-show hosts promoting the heck out of it. The chief editor of the publishing house behind the book is GOP operative Mary Matalin.

The Times piece offers a glimpse of several of the specific lies in the book that will no doubt be used on the Illinois Senator when the Swift-Boating gears up. Here's a quick rundown of the lowlights:

Corsi's book says that Mr. Obama had "yet to answer" whether he "stopped using marijuana and cocaine completely in college, or whether his drug usage extended to his law school days or beyond." Corsi even adds, "How about in the U.S. Senate?" But as the Times points out, Obama has written his memoir that he "stopped getting high" in the early 1980s. That's lie number one.

Corsi's book, amusingly, uses Newsmax.com as a source for the falsehood that Obama was present at a sermon in July of 2007 where Reverend Jeremiah Wright faulted "the 'white arrogance' of America's Caucasian majority for the world's suffering, especially the oppression of blacks." In fact, Obama wasn't at that sermon. Even conservative columnist Bill Kristol issued a correction after trafficking in the same falsehood. That's lie number two.

Corsi says that Obama failed to dedicate his book "Dreams From My Father" to his family, an apparent effort to suggest that Obama lacks family values. But The Times reports that Mr. Obama did dedicate the book to several family members in the introduction. That's lie number three.

At any rate, these are some of the lies we'll be hearing this fall. Oh, and not to hit you all with something so depressing first thing in the morning, but Corsi's book is set to hit the Times best-seller list this weekend. The non-fiction one.

Late Update: Media Matters did a nice job knocking down the book's multiple falsehoods.

Greg,

Depressing? Nah...We're use to this garbage by now. Republicans will stop at nothing to smear democrats, its just in their DNA to be nasty liars.

Greg,

Thank you for fact checking. I hope the media will do the same before election day.

user-pic

Greg, it's not just going to hit the NYT bestseller list, it's going to debut at Number 1! Unbelievable. They say a lot of it is due to bulk sales, presumably to conservative-BS-of-the-month club members.

Also, for all those reporters who keep saying that there are no GOP 527s in sight that are going to run negative ads during the fall campaign, can we now finally put to bed that incredibly dumb claim, often seen at Politico?

He said he was planning to aid several conservative groups that intend to run advertisements against Mr. Obama this fall, though he would not name them.

This is a well-worn right wing trick. Various advocacy groups, "think tanks", and even the publishers themselves place huge "bulk orders", and voila!, a "bestseller". It's a key to the careers of Coulter, Malkin, et al.

Eric Alterman has pretty well documented the conservative practice of having their 'book clubs', which are a front for the publisher, make bulk purchases to get the ranking up at #1 on the NYT Bestseller list. With a few bulk 'purchases' by a friendly/related patron or think-tank, the publishing house can have the free advertising associated with every Safeway and Walmart bookrack in the country saying they're "#1" on the list. The publishing house couldn't buy that kind of advertising for the gross on all legitimate sales.

I would appreciate if someone could run a book signing schedule for "Unfit for Command" so I could attend any local signing and scream out "liars" and "garbage"! Then again, the local police might arrest me for disturbing a conservative event.

Let me know when you find one, and I will plan to join you.

It is depressing, as a the first time I'll be voting for a president and this is what happens. Its very sad

What’s Wrong With Personal Responsibility

"The chief editor of the publishing house behind the book is GOP operative Mary Matalin."

Married, of course, to James Carville, which is all you need to know about that alleged "Democrat."

Yes, well, one must tell lies in order to fill an entire book with "dirt" on Obama. I mean, overall he's pretty clean for a politician. But more importantly, it doesn't sound like new dirt. Where's the bombshell that no one has heard before? It's pathetic to try and swift-boat a guy based on stuff he already owned up to in his own memoirs.

It's because conservative organization buy the book in bulk sales, which places it on #1 on NYTimes list.

user-pic

can you elaborate on this and help us document?

It's right in the NYTimes article:

The book is being pushed along by a large volume of bulk sales, intense voter interest in Mr. Obama and a broad marketing campaign that has already included 100 author interviews with talk radio hosts across the country, like Sean Hannity and G. Gordon Liddy, Mr. Corsi said on Tuesday.

And the NYTimes bestseller list usually puts a "cross" symbol next to books that have risen due to bulk sales.

They need to add a little pile of dogshit icon for Best Selling books that are actually full of shit.

user-pic

How very appropriate that a book that is based on lies has a "bestseller" status that is itself a lie.

I don't know if this helps, but if you look at the best seller list, there's a dagger next to the title, and according to the key, "A dagger (†) indicates that some bookstores report receiving bulk orders."

The only other books flagged with a dagger are "Stori Telling" by Tori Spelling, and "Fleeced" by Dick Morris.

So Corsi is in good company.

Isn't it fairly common for the right-wing publishers to push books up the list by buying thousands of copies themselves?

If I recall correctly, the NYT used to asterisk them to indicate such.

Yes, exactly. That is why this is a non-starter.

Maybe. Let's see how Anderson Cooper et al. cover it.

My guess: "A bestselling book is raising new questions about Barack Obama's fitness to lead."

I'm thinking Something like that.

Honestly, if the mainstream press gives this book any more air than this cursory debunking, I'll be pissed. We saw what happened when they credulously gave a platform to people who lied about Kerry. These people -- these exact same people -- have shown that they'll sink to any depth for political gain. The press in general has quite a bit to atone for their treatment of the Swiftboaters. It's time for them to act responsibly again.

user-pic

A lot of us will be pissed, but so what? The people who own the MSM want McCain to win, and their employees will act accordingly.

You nailed it.

The right wing has been playing this kind of game for years and the MSM just eats these kinds of allegations up and presents them, as though they were true.

Lol...My sentiments. Conservatives lie about book sale like the RIAA lies about record sales. Its all bull!!!

...and just like Scientologists lie about books sales for Dianetics.

and Jerome Corsi needs to be dealt with a heavy dose of karma in his case. God, you listening?

How does a book get classified as "fiction" or "non-fiction"?

Haha, good point. It's usually what the author or book company calls it.

user-pic

The Times article also says that "the publisher is Threshold Editions, a division of Simon & Schuster whose chief editor is Mary Matalin"

Man, it really is a vast right-wing conspiracy.

Obama's surrogates need to go on every available news outlet and repeat over and over again that the McCain's entire campaign is built on lies - not "factual inaccuracies", not "mispeakes", not "misunderstandings" - just flat out lies.

and Obama's too...that's the problem.

I am not worried about that book at all. Only hard core Republican will read it in order to satisfy their anti-Obama appetite.

The question for journalist is simple; would they give the same amount of coverage to anti-McCain book that is out there right now?

user-pic

Yes but not in the way you would hope. If an anti-McCain book came out, the MSM would cover it by saying they were shocked, SHOCKED, that someone would dare question the service and patriotism of our most noble Senator and former POW. Then they would wonder why Obama hasn't been quick to go on the air and condemn this treasonous piece of obvious fiction.

user-pic

And the answer is no. On top of that, the Right would be screaming that the author -- whoever that might be -- is being unkind to a Certified War Hero, which is unpatriotic and...well, just shows you what kind of people liberals are.

McCain has his own problems.

1.Keating Five

2.Lobbying scandals i.e. Vicki Iesman,

3.Cindy McCain's troubling business deals

4.McCain's first wife.

5.Military record.

Wesley Clark went there, we can go there too.

user-pic

On that first wife, I'd like to see an ad:

"John McCain, putting family first!

"When John McCain returned from Viet Nam to find his wife suffering lingering injuries from an automobile accident, he immediately began having affairs. Finally he found a beautiful woman worth tens of millions of dollars, and deserted his first wife to marry her."

"John McCain, putting his family first! His second family, that is! It's never to late to betray your promises to get what you want."

I love it... "It's never to late to betray your promises to get what you want." That should be a tag line for Anti McCain ads listing all the things that demonstrate the real McCain Vs. the Maverick he likes to make people think he is... Bravo!!

Except the media isn't reporting and talking about these constantly.

McCain has his own problems. But the only difference between Obama and McCain: is McCain's problems are true.

1.Keating Five

2.Lobbying scandals i.e. Vicki Iesman,

3.Cindy McCain's troubling business deals

4.McCain's first wife.

5.Military record.

Wesley Clark went there, we can go there too.

Any one of these books would hit the NYT bestseller list. It was hyped before it came out, the conservatives buy it up to make sure it hits top sales, and finally, the only people to buy into this are the people NOT voting for Obama anyway.

This is not a surprise, nor I suspect is it to Obama's campaign. We could take John McCain's non-fiction (really) about his indiscretions and have a hay day with that also. And life goes on.

BTW, I would love to know how many books in non-fiction need to be sold to make best seller re: NYT. The real tale will be how long it stays there.

Really? That's it?

I was expecting some new bombshells.

This shit might be a cakewalk if that's all they have. I mean if it really gets ugly, David Axelrod can always go "Songbird McCain" on them. The Dem might have better dirt for once.

Between Edwards and his affair and God knows what was under the Clintons' fingernails waiting to be exposed, Obama might really be The One afterall.

My sentiments exactly. I can't see where any of these "bombshells" would make a snappy headline.

Ditto. Somehow I don't think many swing voters are going to tear themselves away from The Olympics and summer vacation over "PREFACEGATE," the harrowing true story of how Barack Obama mentioned his family NOT on the flyleaf, but on page ii instead, ooooh aahhhh....is he in the pocket of a special interest editor?? Film at 11.

user-pic

LOL, Hillary was right that Obama hasn't been vetted and we should vote for her -- he's so vulnerable on this utterly petty bullshit. At least the lies Corsi came up with about Kerry sounded bad and (mis)spoke to his character.

user-pic

I'm actually pleased to see that they called it "cocaine" and not "crack-cocaine". This is really a rhetorical step-up for them.

And some REAL news: Obama leads among Christians: first time for a Democrat candidate in two decades:

Link:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/13/poll-obama-leads-among-ch_n_118619.html

user-pic

I believe that's the "born again" vote in two decades, which would be different. Still, pretty great news!

Thanks Dan, you are correct.

My question remains. If these are outright lies being told about Obama why can't, or wont, or hasn't he filed a law suit for defamation???
The damage being done to his character is undeniable & these sleezeballs will keep doing it as long as they know they can get away with it.

Because it would be a huge distraction to the campaign.

Not to mention he'd just be attacked for hating the 1st Amendment (probably something along the lines of first he wanted to get rid of the 2nd Amendment, not he wants to get rid of the 1st).

user-pic

Do you have any real concept of what a lawsuit involves?

Where are his damages?

He's a public figure - different standards apply - did you know that?

Lawsuits are a very poor substitute for a winning campaign.

So far, Plouffe and Obama are running a winning campaign.

Lawsuits under the very very best of circumstances are always a 50-50 deal - you just don't know what a jury will do, or a judge.

And this is hilarious, talk about the coal calling the kettle black.

'In Ohio, Republicans are clearly not pleased with same-day registration and voting and have not ruled out a lawsuit against Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner's office.

"You have to wonder, when they look at what they consider a loophole with such excitement," said Jason Mauk, the Ohio Republican Party's executive director. "That would suggest manipulating the process, and I think opens the door to suspicion."

Which is basically their way of saying "We can't have unregistered, poor minorities just showing up on election day, able to vote. It's not fair!"

Also all of the donors who are maxed-put could buy hundreds of copies to help it up the best-seller list. It's all smoke and mirrors.

Like has been mentioned, I don't see any undecided voters reading this book.

Corsi says that Obama failed to dedicate his book "Dreams of My Father" to his family, an apparent effort to suggest that Obama lacks family values.
Even ignoring that this is a lie... what a bizarre charge.

Isn't the title of the book a dedication? It's an entire book ABOUT HIS FATHER!!!

How many books about his father did asswipe McCain write?

user-pic

yes, but the title of obama's book only has the word "father" while mcCain wrote a book with the word "fathers" in it, so mcCain is multiple times more family friendly. he's had twice as many wives, for that matter.

The entire book was about his family. Can't be more of a dedication than that.

I spoke with my daughter's employer yesterday, a self-made financial advice guy around 32 years old. He is stuck on McCain, and it all comes down to taxes. He, and most of the white male group in this county (97% white) cannot stand welfare and Medi-cal assistance. They are happy to take Social Security and Medicare, but hate helping the less fortunate. And no matter what stats you give them, or point out that they had the ability to do more with their careers due to educational avenues, upbringing, etc., doesn't matter. The Republicans have convinced this nation that Democrats give money to losers and Republicans don't. How they can look at our deficit and not see the handwriting is beyond comprehension for me, but there you have it.

That is why Republican always carry the men votes. I am not surprise, only, greedy men thinks like that.

As J.K. Galbraith said:

"The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness."

Wow, so well put.

user-pic

Ayn Rand in a nutshell...

Bam!

user-pic

It's really weird... They also seem to have this mistaken idea that the more you cut taxes, the more money the govt. takes in from economic growth. Historical data proving the opposite has no effect. By this reasoning, shouldn't we cut taxes to .001%? Man! Think of all the cash the government would haul in then. Maroons.

user-pic

Before he lost his mind, Lou Dobbs once asked one of the GOP talking heads the impossible to answer question, "And how much do you have to cut taxes to balance the budget?"

I've seen these deflections again and again lately: these ads won't appeal to undecideds, this book won't appeal to undecideds, etc, etc. Do you really think the McCain campaign is that stupid?

They are aiming for the base! Since the base is so meh on McCain, these wingnut ads and smears (ie Obama as the antichrist) are squarely aimed at GOTV efforts. Scare the base into being excited against Obama.

So yes, these smears can have a very negative effect despite being completely batshit insane to any independent or undecided voter.

user-pic

That's a good point. There is a huge enthusiasm gap between the candidates. Books like this serve to not only de-motivate marginal Obama supporters, but perhaps more importantly, motivate the GOP base; not out of love for McSame, but out of hatred for Obama.

user-pic
Do you really think the McCain campaign is that stupid?

Do you really think they're that smart?

How about a book about Songbird John McCain, and other of his greatest hits:

* Keating Five

* Vicki Iseman, his sex mistress / lobbyist (literally "in bed with lobbyists")

* How he betrayed and abandoned his first wife when she was hospitalized

* Talk of how he "hates gooks"

* Calling his current trophy wife a "c*nt" in public

* Flipflops on every major issue towards the Bush Right

Media won't do it's job. Will NOT get coverage. They want this to be a close, controversial race, and they are only going to get their rating by Obama bashing.

I still think it will not matter. As I have mentioned, I have yet to talk to one undecided voter.

user-pic

There is only ONE proper response to a message like this: kill the messenger.

Responding to the suggestion that Obama may still be using drugs, for instance, is a no-win for Obama. It's the classic "when did you stop beating your wife?" setup.

The ONLY way to put an end to this nonsense is to dig up dirt on the author and destroy his reputation. He needs to be taken out with ruthlessly extreme prejudice.

The primary job now must be to ruin Corsi--personally and professionally, and hang his demise on every other foul piece of shit that would attempt to attack in this way.

For the good of the entire Party and for the country, Corsi must be taken down.

Wow...that is one ruthless bunny-kitty.

As you can see under the bunny ears, that's one pissed off cat! LOL!

Of course, I agree. We need to character assassinate the character assassin.

I agree with you. Obama needs to hire PR guys that are ruthless. They need to go after the messenger just as Clinton did during the Primary. This is not the time to sit back.

I think it's about time for that time-tested gov discrediting tactic: some trumped up kiddie-porn charges!

Brilliant!

Leak a story that the FBI has confiscated Corsi's computer due to alleged child porn files.

Works every time.

user-pic

Trumped up charges are fine. Probably not necessary, though. I'm sure the guy has some dirt in his closet. The Democrats need to find it. This cockroach needs to be stomped on.

True enough.

Actually, this is something that needs to be done to many Republicans. May I suggest Slimy Norman Coleman as a good start? He's a known skirt-chaser to a degree that makes John Edwards look like an amateur by comparison, and I have heard rumors from more than one source that his "wife" Laurie has shown up at several Twin Cities ER's with unexplained facial bruises.

Someone out there must have corroboration. Or it might be just fun watching him have to deny it.

user-pic

someone fire up the Flyntsignal!

I agree. If you want to fight a fire you need to stamp out the source. Objectivity isn't the primary purpose so specifically the MSM should report on the author and his political position as well as Matlin. Carvel and Matlin are actually what is bad with America. They put profit before country.

These are the same kind of people who fire someone for finding a cure for cancer so they could continue to profit from treatments. Unfortunately their children could get cancer and all their money won't help then. Irony!

Carvel!? Are you kidding me?! Ice Cream is NOT what is wrong with America!!!! ;]

user-pic

Hah! I used to live in NYC, and I miss Dumpy the Pumpkin and Nutty the Squirrel. New York had some of the crappiest television commercials I've ever seen in my life. For as long as I live, I'll have that horrible Coco Goya Colada jingle stuck in my head ("Coco Goya Colada is a lotta colada, it's the cream of the cream of coconut!") and the voice of Ethel Merman singing about Friendship sour cream. Just awful...

Excellent point. I thought Corsi was supposed to be an "expert" on Kerry because of their shared experiences on swift boats in Nam, an "eyewitness" as it were. WTF is his credibility on Obama, seeing as how his reputation is as a right wing smear merchant?

According to Wikipedia:

"Corsi's book The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality was released on August 1, 2008, and is critical of Barack Obama and his candidacy for President. However, almost all of the accusations made in the book have been found to be unsubstantiated, misleading, or inaccurate.[10] Media Matters for America has also criticized the book as containing serious errors, omissions, and falsehoods.[11][12]"

Jerome Corsi (liar, liar, pants on fire) is a right wing hit man. Those who wish to believe him will. Because of his odious history, he can only preach to his choir, who will buy his book and give copies for Christmas.

The only thing to do is to keep debunking the lies and keep putting the facts out there as boldly as possible. We can't rely on the media to do it.

If thats all they have. BO see ya at the inaugaration baby!!

There is nothing to like about their candidate so they have to hate on Obama go motivate their base.

I mean why not write a pro-McCain book?

John McCain was a POW and loves his country, unlike other presidential candidates running this year.
The End

user-pic

Greg,

Just wanted to give a head's-up on the NY Times Bestseller list thing. (Full disclosure: I've had 11 books published; none on NYT Bestseller list), BUT, I'd like to explain how books like this wind up there. The same wealthy wingnuts who back the books in the first place, buy up literally thousands of copies of the book when it is first published--this is how Ann Coulter's first few books made the list. (Maybe more, for all I know.)

Publishers list books on the list strictly by numbers sold, and books just published make the list by pre-orders made three to six months before pub date. So the Wingnut Powers That Be pre-order enough thousands of the books to ensure that it will make the list.

Of course, being at the top of the list then garners you full-court press publicity. The curious, as well as fellow wingnuts looking for "facts" to back their paranoia, then see the book as a bestseller and assume that many thousands of people feel the same way they do, and rush to buy the book, which keeps it at the top of the list and buzz.

The MSM dropped the ball big-time with the Kerry attack books, by giving them serious credibility when, in truth, they had none, thus giving the attacks even more heft. My sincere hope is that, now that "swift-boating" has literally become a verb meaning, lying slanderous smears--then perhaps they'll pay a little closer attention when questioning the so-called "authors."

MediaMatters.com will be all over this, and that should also take some of the sting out of it.

But don't assume that because the book opens at the top of the List, it means that there are already that many people swallowing the Kool-Aid. They just want to make you think that.

Classic right-wing psych-out.

Deanie

I get really annoyed with all the "this is what they will unfold this Fall" and the 527s will attack "in the Fall" and the are preparing to attack "in the Fall".

As if "in the fall" is some far-off time from now, a seemingly endless stretch in which nefariousness and general election fuckery can be plotted and hatched and rolled out.

The election is November 4. That's only two and a half months from now. Am I the only one who thinks that's not that long?

The "Fall" as they say, starts in two weeks. After that, McCain will not have some boundless, endless time to reverse the lackluster and generally head-scratching course he and his campaign have been on.

He has two months.

Not that long. Not this year.

Thanks for reminding me we'll have snow in 2 1/2 months. Thanks a lot.

user-pic

Looks very much here in northern New Mexico like a VERY early fall.

The chamisa is already blooming in Abiquiu and the monarch butterflies are already migrating through here - they usually don't hit here until mid-September and the chamisa is 3 weeks ahead of schedule at least.

I must say, ma'am, you look like northern New Mexico. Nice country.

If they put Mary Matlin's picture on that book, they'll have to sell it at Petco!

user-pic

In the picture, is James Carville holding her leash?

Ha, if this is the worst they've got (and you KNOW they've done their best to dig up dirt)....

I seem to recall there are several books out about McCain. Why doesn't Move On or some rich Dem do a similar bulk buy move and get one of those books up on the list?

user-pic

BUSH still hasn't answered questions about his drug and alcohol use!

Isn't this the a-hole who's suing Regnery Publications for royalties on his work that Regnery practically GAVE away to wingnut book clubs? Dogs have more brains than this doofus! When a dog gets burned, he stays the hell away from the fireplace!

user-pic

Hey, isn't there someone out there with some dirt on Corsi? I want to see a book about the Swift Boat Liars and all their supporters. This makes me sick. He'll get more airplay than Obama's ads do.

Here is an interesting blog about the number of books it takes to make a best seller. It seems it can be as little as 5000, and we know it is no problem for right-wing corporate looters to fund bulk orders of a book like this.

http://www.tessgerritsen.com/blog/?p=277

user-pic

Mary Matalin and James Carville are the two most cynical people on earth I think.

How can they be married and Carville is working for the Democrats and she's working against them unless neither one of them believes one little bit in what they're doing? Two bigger wastes of oxygen don't exist.

Amen. I wish that the Dems who get all tingly over Carville would get a clue.

Seen him in person a few times and he's amongst the creepiest dudes you'll ever see. I mean you THINK he looks funny on tv but when you're standing next to him you just think "DAMN! he's funny looking!"

user-pic

Carville is a Manimal.

Jeez, I've been saying that for years and nobody listens. ;)

user-pic

A book being a bestseller means that it sold only perhaps a few hundred thousands.

Obama will be reaching millions upon millions of people with his ads.

user-pic

As has been noted already - a bestseller doesn't mean a bunch of readers bought the book - it just means someone bought a bunch.

How many people does anyone here think will actually read this? I'm not discounting it's impact, but I have to wonder who the hell reads this shit unless it'a people already convinced there is something wrong with Obama.

It's not hard to deduct that the idea is not to have a lot of people actually read the book.

The idea simply is to put it out there, do the bulk sales thing, and thus cop yourself a ubiquitous, one-day headline like: "New Book Exposing Obama's Left-Wing Agenda Number One On Times Best-Seller List".

THAT is the payoff, right there. No one has to read it, except maybe the Times book reviewers.

At which time, various smear quotes from the review pop up in GOP TV spots, attributed to "New York Times, 8.13.2008".

(Y'know... I could understand if these pricks had never actually , before. But geez man, every time they do, everyone acts as if it's this brand new, puzzling, devastating concept which sprang anew from beneath a cabbage patch..????)

user-pic

Serious question, why is a book like this allowed on the non-fiction list at the NY Times. It is basically the Times saying it is true.

can you elaborate on this and help us document?

Greg, obviously your initial question was well answered above, but as a PS I recall reading in the past that other books that have been fluffed up the bestseller's list with bulk sales then show up as free give aways if you sign up for/buy/participate in some kind of conservative activity/other book, etc. Someone should keep an eye out to see where those books turn up.

Greg, just so we're clear, you guys at TPM do understand how the bulk sales scam works, don't you?

I'm looking at the front page of the site, and I'm not sure.

Maybe instead of TPM joining the other rats at the Decon box, you guys should step back for a moment and examine whether this book is selling to actual readers or whether there are boxes piled up on Mary Matlin's back porch.

Just a thought.

Aye, it's a wonder.

if not dedicating a book to your family, would mean you don't have good family values then what would cheating on your disabled wife say about your family values? it's hard to imagine that anyone who is educated enough to read a book, would believe the kind of nonsense contained in this one.

You can smear anyone with innuendo. Even issue mentioned has been proven wrong. The ones that can't be proven right are just hear say and meant to create rumors. So by the time Obama is elected these guys will undermine the administration. Who is hurting America?

Isn't it silly for the con man to come back to town, after he's split with the loot from the first time he was there?

Does the GOP (oh, right, these guys are all UNAFFILIATED with the McCain campaign! Where was my head??) really believe that the MSM is going to look at this book, and start belching-out headlines like "New Questions Raise Doubt About Obama's Left-Wing Agenda"???

More like "Swift Boat Author Is Back".

Man, they've got nothing. And they'd really better start worrying about the time... coming up soon... when "liberal" and "left-wing" won't be automatic smears anymore, but will sound to a new generation of totally screwed Americans like "a good idea".

You know, I hear about this book being a best-seller, and it isn't passing the smell test. In fact, it's burying the needle on the Stink-O-Meter.

You mean to tell me that families in Nebraska who can't afford gas or a visit to the doctor are jamming the aisles at Barnes & Noble to buy a hardcover book?

About Obama?

Featuring smears they can get for free every day on Limbaugh's show?

Call me skeptical. Hopefully there are a few others.

Excellent, excellent point.

See my comment above; nobody has to read it. Except for ONE book reviewer, who will dutifully repring ONE smear in the book.

After that, everyone can quote the smear in papers, on TV, in political attack ads... and the book doesn't need to sell so much as one copy.

And again... why is this still not apparent, to the media who ENABLE this scam?

(Personally, I think it is. And that the MSM is more than willing to "do its job", so to speak.)

...and although it's too loathesome even to include in the list, we should not forget the Chelsea Clinton/Janet Reno joke, lest we forget what a contemptible adolescent jackass he is.

But I would be willing to throw in "bomb, bomb, bomb...bomb, bomb Iran."

What an asshole.

user-pic

Off topic, but has anyone else noticed that James Carville and Mary Matalin look exactly alike? I saw them together on a talk show and honestly, James Carville could put on a wig and some reasonably flattering makeup and look just like his wife. (Which is a terrible thing to say about poor Mary but there you have it.)

They say married couples grow to look alike over time, but I was left wondering if they had plastic surgery to help them along.

We can now return to regularly scheduled commentary.

It's good that Corsi is writing this, because that basically establishes its political roots, and its factual unreliability. The Swift Boat brand might not sell so well this time, given how the last time it gave us President Chimp for another 4 years.

I've been away and have not commented since Hillary bowed out. It looks like the Spring farce is repeating itself. McCain is doing a Hillary by going negative and making it a nothing campaign. Desperation as usual.

But the cold poll numbers show an Obama win in November as the economy contiues to tank. McCain is not on the side of history.

It's also a generation thing. McCain does not resonate with most boomers, many Xers and most Yers. Even many senior citizens reject him. As do most women and minorities. He can have most of the white male vote, but past Democrats won without it.

Obama is hanging onto the Gore/Kerry states plus Ohio. That gives him more then he needs to win. If he captures any other states it's a bonus.

So yes, anything could happen. But if I was in the stock market. I would be going long Obama and shorting McCain and ignoring the financial pundit noise.

Have a swell summer.

This may seem petty, but it sure made me feel better: while at Wal-mart the other day, I turned the face of the book so that it was facing in.

Obama should learn from Kerry, don't try to answer every smear but when you do, smash it back in their faces.

Did Corsi dedicate his book to his family? If not, he doesn't have family values.

If he did, the fact that he did not dedicate it to his country indicates he is unpatriotic.

Remember when Obama opted out of public financing, reversing his pledge in large part to combat the inevitable right-wing smear machine? Remember a lot of people commenting at the time (not necessarily here) that it looked like the swift-boating isn't going to occur this year, so why did he *really* opt out?

Well, this certainly looks like the opening salvo of the Republican Smear-O-Matic. Gee, it looks like Obama was right about that, too. Time to write another check to the campaign, which I encourage everyone here to do!
