Teddy Kennedy's Speech
No need to say more than this: Watching Teddy Kennedy's robust speech tonight, it's hard to imagine that there was ever any doubt that he'd appear at the convention this evening...

It's a really great speech. Until Michelle Obama, I thought his was the best speech of the night.

The expressions on Caroline's and Maria's faces during Teddy's speech spoke volumes. That family's been through so much - and has given so much to this country. I'm really happy that he was there.

He really highlighted well the higher ideals of the Democratic Party that we all aspire to, why we need to unite and get Obama into the White House.

James Carville: Dems wasting first night
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/08/25/carville-dems-wasting-first-night/
... Uhhh...What?
August 25, 2008 11:52 PM | Reply | Permalink
Whaddya expect after a bitter, highly contested election in which his network of influence was rebuked. Yawn.
August 25, 2008 11:59 PM | Reply | Permalink
Carville thinks politics is all about attacking. Apparently he fails to recognize the importance of inspiring the audience and lifting people up.
Going negative would have brought everyone down. That could explain why Carville was not more successful.
Obama's message is about hope and inspiration. There is plenty of time to attack McCain and Bush later on.

Why is there such a ridiculous worship of this guy? He's an old drunk, an unpunished killer and he would never have even become a senator if not for his two dead older brothers and rich, bootlegging daddy?
August 25, 2008 11:57 PM | Reply | Permalink
Well, Bush is an old drunk, an unpunished killer and he would never have been elected President if not for his Daddy. The difference is Kennedy has a 40 year record of legislative accomplishments and besides he's more fun. I mean would you rather be on that yacht on the Cape or chopping wood in Crawford?

clearing brush - he couldn't chop wood if the Secret Service chopped it all up for him first.

(reply to bluebell) WELL said! As Biden said the other day, quoting his father, "what matters is how fast you get back up" I think that Ted Kennedy and Al Gore are lessons to us all about "getting back up" -- Gore from an unfair and searing loss and Kennedy from his own failings. But, in the end, what is impressive and admirable in their lives is what they did *after* getting getting back up.

Aaron, you are really an ass saying what you just did. He has been an advocate for health insurance for all for years. He has done a lot of good deeds as a Senator, and to top it off, he lost three brothers who died in service to this country. That alone would be enough to drive me to drink. He is dying, yet he was there tonight to encourage all of us to get involved, and yes, once again, demanded health care for everyone.
I doubt you have done 1/1000th of what this man has done, when he could have sat back in life and just enjoyed his money. You are worse than an ass. Just shut up if you can't say anything decent.

Can the folks from ABC be any worse? Matthew Dowd and Halprin are on Charlie Rose. Dowd said Biden is bad pick because he's not boring enough. The others on the panel just laughed at him. He then said that the convention crowd was holding back because of the Hillary drama. Al Hunt just ridiculed him. Of course Halprin agrees with Dowd and said that the Obama family moment at the end was "too casual" and "too informal" which may be a problem in contrast with Cindy McCain who is very formal. Code?

Yep. I worked with children for a long, long time. Sasha's spontaneous - their interaction on the stage was certainly not coached. It was darling. I thought it was amazing that Michelle gave her the microphone - I would have been afraid of what she might say...but you can just see that these two are great parents.

During Uncle Teddy's speech, when he pointed out that Barack Obama would be a commander-in-chief who would never send our troops to fight in a mistake. C-Span cut to Biden's reaction, and I was pleased to note evidence of an uncomfortable conscience on Joe Biden's face; a personal recognition that, unlike Senator Kennedy, he had been a party to permitting that mistake. It looked like good, solid Catholic guilt; the kind that is followed in short order by a priest's admonition to "go and sin no more."
I foolishly recorded MSNBC's coverage, not C-Span's -- if they carried the same reaction shot, maybe I'll clip it and put it up on YouTube.
August 26, 2008 12:30 AM | Reply | Permalink
Ah, I see that this is the C-Span video above.
The reaction I'm talking about is at about 6:00 in.
It's long enough that you can get the internal dialogue, ending with his adjustment of his lapels as he resolves again to make right the wrong he has done.
Am I reading too much into it?

I'll be honest, until I saw that moment, I had some serious doubts about Obama chosing Biden.
My doubts have been considerably assuaged tonight.

Glad you're on board!
Biden was not my first choice, and I had real doubts about him, too. Then I saw his introductory speech on Saturday, saw the way he was staying true to himself and actually holding McCain accountable. That's when I was won over.

I applaud Kennedy for showing up. It failed to fire me up. He just runs out of steam after long sentences. What does he say (trying to) at 3:27-3:30????
We all know that Biden doesn't have the best judgment on Iraq. He voted for the "war" resolution. This was an "experienced" senator unable to see through the BS, and unwilling to investigate the BS. Especially unable to identify the lies that Colin Powell manufactured at UN. And now he wants to split Iraq in 3 regions. Is this Obama's position as well?

After what Kennedy has been through the past few months he was on top of his game tonight. Having had a brain tumour and chemo he did remarkably well. Although his voice may have been a little-bit shaky, he is to be commended for doing what he did IMHO.
Originally he was supposed to give a 4 minute speech. He doubled that. So it is encouraging to see his strength returning.
Kennedy is the Father of the Democratic Party and tonight he handed the torch over to Obama.
Michelle's speech couldn't have been better. She hit it out of the ballpark. Most women in the audience had tears in their eyes -- so did I. I think that may have been the catharsis needed for most of Hillary's voters, if not all?
As a side note:
I sent Senator Kennedy a "get well" email when he was diagnosed with the brain tumour. I never in a million years expected a reply, but he wrote back thanking me. That says a lot about who he is as a person. He is decent and kind. Yes he is a politician, but he has worked endlessly to make the world a better place. We need more like him in government.

I'm in the perhaps unusual position of agreeing with much of the criticism of Sen. Kennedy above and even more agreeing with you and others who have said similar things in his favor.
In a former professional capacity I came across Sen. Kennedy in some situations where the utmost discretion, kindness, good judgment, and strength were called for. He never failed. I'm not trying to make him into a Francis of Assisi or Ignatius Loyola -- someone who rose above a reckless youth to achieve heroic sanctity. But I do think there is such a thing as being purified by trial, *even when much of it is self-inflicted*. This is one reason why I'm so reluctant to accuse people of hypocrisy who cling (if you'll pardon the much-pilloried word) to a demanding religion (or other high principles) that they seem conspicuously to violate. There are worse things than hypocrisy if those principles thereby remain available to be grasped and -- however haltingly -- lived up to.

Carville is probably unhappy that he is not being consulted and involved. A disgruntled Hillary supporter. He needs a job... someone give that man something to do.

Oops didn't check that replay box.
I loved Teddy's presence and the fact that he was honored tonight. That he wants to be there in January is obvious. I loved his wrap up about hope arising and the dream lives on... sort of felt a flash of historical moments being brought together right then.
I so admired Jim Leach for his leadership and willingness to address the democratic convention. Generally liked him in the senate.
Michelle did a great job. I loved the moment with the family and I would like to spit on the people who criticized it as too informal, pish posh.
August 26, 2008 6:17 AM | Reply | Permalink
The people who saw it as "too informal," I'd venture to say, are uncomfortable with how genuine the Obamas' love and closeness are. They should get use to that. THAT is what real, loving families look like. It's not that manufactured stuff that is typically trotted out on stages for viewing.
I thought it was a great way to end the presentation and Americans will relate to it in a big way.

MSM is lying about the convntion that Dems were not critical enough of John McCain and did not define him! I don't know what Convention they saw, but I watched C-Span starting at about 4:00 p.m., and speaker after speaker was very critical of John McCain and took every opportunity to compare McCain to Bush. Nancy Pelosi, Rep., Jessie Jackson, Jr., and a host of others. There was even a mini town hall meeting where those who answered the questions were very critical of John McCain! They were great.
I guess this gives them something to falsely complain about so they won't have to say how really Great Michelle did and how she did the party good.
However, what I want to know is can these people GOP/Corporate - controlled media — ever tell the truth? Or are they all a bunch of liars. This is unreal that our media has decayed this much.
And Joe Scarborough is Imploding with Rage and Jealousy!

I was stunned. I have a friend who had a brain tumor and I've seen what it can do to someone. I was amazed that Kennedy was feeling well enough to deliver that speech and to do it so well. That was a real profile in courage.
