Report: Three Suspects Arrested In Connection With Possible Assassination Plot May Have Been White Supremacists
Newsweek digs into yesterday's news about a possible plot to assassinate Barack Obama and confirms the arrests:
A law-enforcement official familiar with the investigation has told NEWSWEEK that three men are now under arrest in connection with an inquiry into a possible plot to kill Barack Obama. The official, who asked for anonymity when discussing sensitive information, said the three men presently face firearms and drug charges filed by police and prosecutors in Arapahoe County, in the Denver suburbs. The FBI and the Secret Service are deeply involved in the investigation, although no federal charges have been filed to date. The official added that it was unclear at present how real the plot was; further investigation could prove that it was an empty threat, or that the suspects were flakes or loudmouths.
The piece has another key nugget of news at the end:
Wednesday evening, the FBI confirmed the identity of one of the suspects: Tharin Robert Gartrell. A source familiar with the investigation said that Gartrell and the other two suspects were believed to be white supremacists. The real question now is whether the men were in position to carry out any kind of threats against the candidate -- or whether they were trying to impress girlfriends, the source said.
It's unclear exactly how well nailed-down this is -- the mag writes that the three were "believed" to be white supremacists -- but it's unlikely the mag would have run with this if there weren't some basis for doing so.
Late Update: The Los Angeles Times adds still more, reporting that "in the rented vehicle of Tharin Gartrell, a 28-year-old convicted felon, they found two high-powered scoped rifles, ammunition, sighting scopes, radios, a cellphone, a bulletproof vest, wigs, drugs and fake IDs."
And another of the men wore a Nazi swastika ring and is named "Adolph."
The U.S. Attorney's office says there was no credible threat to Obama, but that of course doesn't necessarily mean that this wasn't a real plot.

This isn't surprising.
People who want to assassinate people usually are about half hate-filled and half is just pure nutjobbery.
I think these guys are in abundance of both..

Earlier it was said that they did not constitute a credible threat. One has to ask whether this is true, or whether this was just said to calm people down.

That may mean now that they have foiled this plot. It could also mean that they don't think they actually could have carried it out.
Regardless, it's still scary.

Definitely. The thought of it makes me nauseous.

Between the redneck racists cranked on speed and the psycho Hill-raisers tripping on ego it's no wonder Barack isn't in any hurry to get to Denver.

Whoknows, maybe that is why we saw him 'say' he was in Kansas, MO?
To trip up the terrorist plot?
It was very clear that was an unscripted moment. I do not even think Michelle was expecting Obama to pop up on the screen like that.
This is getting frightening.
We need to all say a prayer that everything goes well Thurs.

I don't think we've seen last of such plots. To a white supremacist, Barack Obama, being in an eexcellent position to become the next president, represents their worst nightmare come true.

Jumping out of the window of a sixth floor hotel room seems a little extreme to avoid being caught with possession of meth.

From what I've heard it doesn't sound like these guys were smart enough to kill a stop sign, much less someone protected by the Secret Service.

Now that I look back, it actually doesn't say that Adolph, the guy who jumped out the 6th floor window had meth, only that there was meth in Gartrell's rental truck.

If one was on meth, they all were. Meth fiends flock together. Between fiending and committing criminal acts for $$ for more meth..that is all their lives consist of.

I don't see much value in discussing this. Barack is facing threats, not surprisingly from inbred racist shitheels. He is better protected than any candidate in history and he's in my prayers. What else is there to say?

The Secret Service and local law enforcment are actually willing to protect Obama where years ago they were tacitly if not explicitly complicit in the assassination of MLK and Malcom X (and if you are partial to conspiracies you can throw in RFK).

But there was "no credible threat". Why, because they didn't get him?
August 26, 2008 10:06 AM | Reply | Permalink
My thoughts are that they are going to say that there wasn't a "credible threat" because they doubt that they would have been able to pull it off or that they claimed that they would try during the speech and there wasn't a logistical possibility of doing it.
I also think however that the FBI should not be down playing this threat nor over hyping it either. Just call it for what it is and provide the public with information.

No cause for alarm - four assassins, so a lone nut is impossible. We do not have actual conspiracies in this country, only "possible" conspiracies. Therefore, do not be concerned So long as it isn't a lone nut, Barack Obama is absolutely safe.

hehehehehe..so true NCSteve..only muslims and blacks represent credible terrorist threats.
Now, whitesupremacists are nothing serious...only part of American legacy...these are legacy patriots upholding the true and right principles of this country founded by and for the (white) people.
Go back to work people, nothing credible here, just a bunch of white supremacists, we all know those types..we grew up with them...they do not mean any harm..they are just being American patriots upholding the real and true American traditions.
riiight...

If these same nuts were planning to blow up a federal building, on the other hand, the feds would have thwarted a very real terrorist threat.

I'm not sure what they mean by "credible," but renting a truck and staying in a hotel along with all of their weapons, sounds pretty serious to me.
August 26, 2008 10:42 AM | Reply | Permalink
It's not 'credible' means they are white. You know they look like your neighbors..so don't get alarmed.
If they were black or muslim..THEN you need to take it seriously...cause blacks and muslims are the real credible terrorists and threat to our homeland.
got it?

By way of comparison, consider this kid Eric McDavid. His plot was far less "credible" --- they didn't have guns, a specific target, a desire to injure anyone, etc. --- and the government put him away for 19+ years. He, too, may have just been trying to impress a girl.
If they'll press federal felony conspiracy charges against him, why not these racists?

If something happens to Obama Fox News and the Republican hit men will be blamed for inciting violence against Obama. I think their would be plenty of proof to show that these people hate Obama with every fiber in their body and seek to influence others to hate and distroy him by any means. I have said over and over that the right-wing has crossed the line and that the FBI and the CIA need to pay attention to what they are saying and who and why are they saying it. However we are now at a place where it is hard to know who to trust to enforcement the rule of law and who is on whose side of the violation of the law--if you know what I mean.

Obama was criticized for playing the race card when saying that there were those who would oppose him because he looked different from the presidents on our currency. Every Obama surrogate should be out there putting the question to the press - Did not Obama have a real concern on this issue?

I really don't think we want to play this up. I agree that I don't quite understand the rhetoric coming out of the FBI; I await an explanation of why it's not a credible threat when white supremacists with rifles say they want to shoot you. The whole thing makes me sick, and really makes me feel for the Obama family.
But as someone else said -- I don't want the threats publicized, I just want them *caught*. DKos diary from the Springfield event reported that the Secret Service was *thick* on every rooftop anywhere nearby. As long as they keep doing that, they can play down the threats in the media for all I care. Maybe they're trying not to give other nutcases a model.

Alex 39, here's why it's worth talking about: because the FBI says that people who AREN'T credible threats are (when they're Muslims, when they're anarchists, whatever), while they seem to go to pains to portray these people as less important. That, in and of itself, is the problem worth discussing.
August 26, 2008 11:22 AM | Reply | Permalink
Honestly, I don't know how this should be handled. I'm not in the Secret Service.
But here's my feeling: We don't want these people to feel important. We don't want them to look important. We want them to look pathetic, and unserious -- like guys who would not be worth imitating, even if you were a self-destructive right-wing nutcase.
The sympathy we would get by proving that the threat is real . . . isn't worth . . . proving that the threat is real.

Not a credible threat. Gee, thanks for the reassurance Mr. Bush Appointed U.S. Attorney.
So tell me, how credible a threat would Lee Harvey Oswald have been deemed if he'd been arrested in Dallas with a cheap-ass mail-order Italian bolt action that couldn't be properly scoped on November 19, 1963? How credible a threat would Mark Hinckley's .22 caliber toy revolvers and Jody Foster obsession have been considered to Ronnie four days before he took his shot? How credible a threat would Squeaky Fromme and Sara Jane Moore have seemed to be before the fact?
For Christ's sake. Put any of those people behind the wheel of car with their guns in the back and pull them over on a routine traffic bust, do you think anyone would have thought they added up to a ?credible threat"? Hell, even Sirhan Sirhan wouldn't have seemed like a credible threat if you'd only pulled him over and found a gun. The threat wouldn't have been apparent until you searched his room and found the clippings and the notebooks, and its questionable whether a judge would have found sufficient probable cause to even issue a warrant.
Just goes to show. In Bushworld, there are no right wing terrorists, only Islamofascist t'r'sts.
Oh, and way to prejudice your jury pool, there, dumbass.

It is worse when you realize that a former President of the United States was allowed to engage in racemongering for his wife's campaign. He was never called out on it by the media, nor the talking heads. No one has to call WJC a racist to highlight that what he did was worse. He used the racial divisions in this country to polarize the electorate along racial lines for personal political ambitions.
No ONE not even WJC should be allowed or ignored when they do such a thing. WJC has created an atmosphere that makes whitefolks feel justified in doing whatever they choose to Obama. He called his whole campaign a 'fairytale' that is nothing but Southern lingo for 'who does this uppity negro think he is'. It is a 'fairytale' for a black man to even THINK he can be President is what Bill Clinton meant and all those racially biased folks in small towns and across American heard his call for racial solidarity. When Bill went on the Limbaugh show that is what he was doing. He sanctioned the rightwingnuts...to do whatever they need to stop this 'dangerous' negro who is a threat to 'our way of life'
WJC did this deliberately.
I do not think it was just my imagination that noted we did not see Obama in the picture with the Giordano family. They showed separate shots of both.
They had Obama in some bunker setting!!
Not serious, not credible my ass..it was real and and it was highly credible.

That is not what Bill Clinton meant, and you know it. Your post is as bad as the stuff the American Spectator was spewing in the 90's.
I want very much to feel positive about Obama's candidacy, but the hatred that people like you keep spitting out here is making it very hard, even while I tell myself that Obama should not be held responsible for the vile opinions of some of the people who support him.
If you want Obama to lose this race, then keep it up.

Keep trying. I certainly don't hold Hillary responsible for the opinions expressed about Obama by her supporters.

Who will protect Obama from the Secret Service?
http://www.star-telegram.com/667/story/486413.html
Here's a few reasons to be concerned for Senator Obama, folks: the frequent acts of campaign office vandalism, the earliest request EVER for Secret Service protection, the failure to screen participants at the Dallas rally, the fact that the DNC convention is meeting in Denver, the increased chatter on hate group sites referring to Rahowa, the Clinton's race-baiting appeals...there's an ominous pattern here. Publishing what Obama wrote in his prayer inserted into the Wailing Wall was intentional and more than an invasion of privacy if you remember what was stated in the first sentence of the prayer.
