Powell Spokesperson: No, He's Not Going To Be Veep, Dammit!

There's yet another round of rumors today to the effect that Colin Powell is being seriously considered as McCain's Veep.

So we checked in with his spokesperson, Peggy Cifrino, who told us that the answer is definitely, positively, and unequivocally NO!

"There is absolutely no truth to this whatsoever," Cifrino emailed us.

When we asked if Powell had been vetted, she continued: "He is busy with his own life and has said repeatedly that he has no interest in being a vice presidential candidate. He has NOT filled out any vetting papers and there is just no truth to this."

Hmmm. That might mean that the answer is No. Unless...

Is he older than McOld?

Powell is 71 I believe. No one is older than McCain!

wow he looks younger then 71. Maybe Powell should give McCain his secret to looking so fabulous.

New McCain Fear Mongering Ad

He's 8 months younger actually! (It would only be the oldest ticket in American history...)

As Chris Rock said about Colin Powell back in the nineties...

"He can fucking beat Dole! Why would you ask someone to run on a Presidential ticket with someone he can beat!?"

Commentators on Kos correctly identified these faux VP "possibilities" as an effort to pretend McCain is open-minded and independent in "considering" various moderates.

This should soften the impact when he picks the rightwing GOP hack the GOP overlords order him to.

Good little sidekick McCain does what he's told.

That's what I always figured Jindal was.

It wouldn't really have gotten Jindal anything anyways. He'd have set himself up for a presidential run in 2016, but that'd probably happen anyways; and of course, if McCain loses, Jindal goes down with him.

It's rather blatant actually. Pro-choice, then a woman, and now Powell...

Sounds kinda like Biden ;) lol

Please be Mitt.

Word. Please give us the chance to laugh hysterically at that Dbag for the next seventy days...

It is Mittens. Or so says the oracle Intrade.com. He was at 70% last I checked.

Meanwhile, where is Eric with an analysis of the latest TIGHTENING CLOSE NECK AND NECK Gallup poll showing Obama with a 6 pt. national lead?

He probably passed out trying to figure out a way to spin it as a negative for Obama. When he comes to he'll post his thread.

1/3 of respondents were polled before Hillary's speech, I believe. And none of them were polled before Bill Clinton's or Joe Biden's speeches. And of course none of it was done before tonight. Hmm...

I did some analysis on this in another post, but long story short since the Gallup includes daily polls from Aug 25 - 27, and Aug 25 was a poor day for Obama polling, it is likely that the last 2 days he has averaged a 10-12 point lead over McCain.

No reason to think that won't continue a few days, perhaps even grow depending on what happens tonight.

Yes, indeed...okay, Quick, Chrono! Off the top of your head - don't think!

What's the spread going to be tomorrow? Talking about Gallup.

Remember, it's factoring in Michelle, Hillary, Bubba/Kerry/Biden.

Powell is not that stupid to be on the wrong side of history.

Gbenga,
Did I not hear supposed from Powells own mouth that he was considering voting for Obama? I agree with you - besides the Repubs screwed Powell big time.

Mark Halprin over at the page is reporting that the Mittens family has a gotten a Secret Service detail.

Any stories about flights headed to the airport in Akron (which also services Dayton) from places that normally don't service there? I dimly remember that it was one of the things that tipped us off to Biden this year and Edwards four years ago.

Akron doesn't serve Dayton. Dayton has its own airport. (former Buckeye here).

Good lord. Is McCain that stupid? I can't wait for the ads the DNC will release featuring Romney and McCain attacking each other.

Is McCain that stupid?

He didn't used to be.

I like how your avvie makes it look like Bush is the one asking the question, and the chimp gives him the answer.

Quite accidental, but thanks!

Yeah, it is awesome

McCain/Romney '08 the job killing machine of America...Democrats need to hammer this message home.

GOP knows that's how Biden was soiled, could be playing games with actors or something. However if it is legit that means McCain is going to make an announcement tonight to try and trump Obama's acceptance speech.

*spoiled

Let's hope both are true. He picks the trainwreck Romney and looks petty and desperate while doing so. It's win win, McDumbass.

He has NOT filled out any vetting papers...

Guess that means his vetting was done interview-style.

A black on both tickets?!

What will Geraldine Ferraro do?

Off Topic:

On CNN right now the story link says: "Praise for Biden; disgust over Clinton morals"

Then you click it and the headline goes to "iReporters applaud Bill Clinton, Biden speeches"

The iReport comments are 100% positive.

Oops. I somehow skipped over the one negative comment about Clinton. It's the usual GOP Anti-Bill talking points, hardly seems worthy of the headline.

There's one lunatic arguing the opposing position; therefore we have a debate.

I don't know if America is ready for a black vice president.

There've been many things in life I wasn't ready for that overtook me nevertheless.  I couldn't have stopped them had I wanted to.

Sometimes life's like a game of hide-and-seek:  Ready or not, here I come!

What is shady about this is that it makes one assume that Powell is supporting McCain, I mean McCain isn't going to "consider" someone who wasn't a supporter right?

Playing the "some of my best friends are black and are on my short list for veep" card.

Hey, any word on McCain's plan to try to step on Obama's speech with an ad with McCain addressing Barack directly?

Hope the Dems have plans for ads to stomp on the Republicans during their convention.

It's ridiculous to think that Powell would even consider boosting Repub chances after being set up as patsy by Bush and his minions.

This whole story is just one more instance of him getting used by Repubs.

Powell should go on pundit patrol at the GOP convention and express his views about which candidate would make the best president and why.

If Colin Powell tells you something, you can always believe him.

Shhh. Don't mention that little thing about how he told the world about Iraq's WMD, and Nuclear programs. You just had a dream that he said that those aluminum tubes were for to produce Nukes.

Why does the media keep asking him over and about the VP slot after he said that he was not interested. When has ever mislead us.

I don't think Powell is going to vote for McCain, much less share the ticket with him.

It would be beyond awesome if, after this speculation, Powell showed up in Denver.

To hell with him. Even after he found out that we were lied into the Iraq disaster, he still never took a stance.

He is just another ass kisser.

Remember Powell's Barbara Walters interview a while back one could understand why Powell will not throw his hat in the ring. McCain is a victim and uses his POW status as a crutch. When will he ever “get over it”?

In this case, Powell will have to be on constant defense in this case because he is black and being show would be an automatic crutch and the POW will give him a "pair". Jim Crow ended in the 70s and so did McCain's POW status, so both are old enough to be forgotten or subdued into normalcy.

Powell running on a Bob Barr ticket or McKinney would actually make more since because with Barr, he bring credibility to mild Paul-type candidate or he could use the double negative aspect with McKinney or would that be a triple.

All in all, it makes no sense for Powell to run when he knows what the country is capable of.

Powell knows that he has disgraced himself. I'll hand him that much. There are people like John McLame running around who have no clue how thoroughly they disgraced themselves; at least Powell knows it.

I really believe there is no way in hell that Colin Powell would consider being McLame's VEEP. No. Way. In. Hell.

Lots of people are saying that Sarah Palin is in hio, even as ABC believes she is not.

My money is on Lindsey (don't ask, don't tell) Graham!

That's O-hio.

In a surprise move, John MCCain announced his VP pick is Hillary Clinton.
